William Baber kills, wife Edna, daughter and self, Mobile AL 1961

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Thursday, Sept. 14, 1961

• “A coroner’s report released Wednesday named George William Baber as the person who fired the shots that killed himself, his estranged wife and her 6-year-old daughter last month. Concluding that the case was double murder-suicide, Assistant Coroner Dr. E.L. Brown said a long and intense study indicated Mrs. Edna Baber apparently was asleep when she was shot through the head. He said evidence indicated the child was then shot twice through the head by Baber, a 37-year-old salesman. ...”

Not my line, just sharing.

I've not heard of George, but I know that Powhatan died as a young man leaving 5 small kids. I will ask my aunt Jean.

I am looking for the burial location and, specifically, a tombstone photo or transcription for Costello Hill Baber, born March 15, 1804 in Buckingham County, Va to Isaac and Sally Tapscott Baber. He died March 22, 1894 in Kanawha, Putnam County, West Virginia. There are several known children that also raised families in the area.

I am also looking for any specific source that PROVES his middle name to be "Hill". Bible record, death certificate, burial record, anything...

Thanks for any help

Jeremy Winfrey

I have a great deal of information about Minnie Emma Baber and her nine siblings including Button and Bessie. Her father was William Silas Baber and Minnie and her siblings were children of William and his second wife Annie E. Butler. I have all of their Dates of birth, dates of deaths and locations of most births and deaths. Minnie married John S. Hall and they had six children, four boys and two girls. One of the girls married a "Cole" and one of them married Wilbert Walker. So your grandparents must be a Cole, a Walker or a Hall. I have much additional information. My email address is virginiarebel2007@gmail.com I think I can take your Baber line back to at least 1775.

I have lost contact with an old uncle: Harold Baber born August 12, 1912 at Willesden, London, England.
He has been a widower for many years. I can't find any information if he is still alive or has deceased. I would be interested if you have heard of this relative and have any information about him.
Thanks;
Jim LaBossiere

Hi Andy,

I've just seen the message you posted in 2000 re Percy Baber. They don't call me lightning for nothing!!

I have a matching Percy Robert Baber b1901 in Lambeth in my tree. To my knowledge he was a police inspector (maybe transport police) and had four children Michael, Sidney, Lilian and Cyril. He was also married to Lilian ([perhaps Lily). If we have the same one I can give you more Babers than you could shake a stick at!

If you haven't found all this out yourself in the years since you message, let me know and I'll pass it on to you.

Regards,

Sue Sullivan

I am looking for the Baber family in Nicholas County, WV who raised my great-grandfather, George E. Cutlip. I don't know what the circumstances were that he was orphaned and apparently neither does anyone in my family. It apparently was not talked about to any of the older generation of my family that is still living. George Cutlip was born about 1863 and I would like to find out who his parents were or st least his mother. Any help would be appreciated.

I went to Edwardsville recently and found a grave marker which was a typical Veteran's Affairs marker. It is in a beautiful cemetery and it is very near many graves of Baber's.
Now, it raises the question whether he is really buried there as it was set aside from the other graves.
His wife and other family members are buried in City Cemetery in Marietta, GA.
I cannot look for tax records, etc. as the Gwinnett County Courthouse burned.
My new e-mail is now: @windstream.net

I want to order a copy of the marriage and in my notes I do not have the state where they married.
Susan may have been married before to a Humphry/Humphrey but I have not located that either--she and Richard had a child- Alice Humphrey- age 1 living with them in the 1860 Census in Greene County, Indiana. She was not with them in the 1870 Census in Sullivan County, Indiana so she probably married before then or died.
If I had a print out of your information reference Baber-Butler I could just check it and add the recent information for you and mail it back to you.
I have not been on your site for a long time---tell me step by step how to get on, please!
Marie Edgar----edmonde@centurytel.net

I have a picture of Bessie's brother in uniform and noted on the back is "Button" Baber. Everybody had a nick-name, hard to keep track of people that way. I would love to get any info. you might have on that line of family. I have a few pictures of my Great Grandma Bessie, some in the mid 50's and some in the early 60's before she died. She is standing with my grandfather Elwood and my dad Emmett Hyden. Here is my email 71dart@comcast.net
Thanks for the reply.
