I have just stumbled on your post and am relatively new to Ancestry. I am a direct descendent of Aaron Backhouse, born around 1814, died 1885 in Smethwick. Our family are Tipton / Dudley / Staffs based. I would love to find out more if you would like to get in touch. Kate

I have one possible theory left. You say JHB was a civilian and not in the military, despite conscription ensuring that virtually all men his age were military men. You also have JHB mysteriously appearing around the same time that William E Eva is equally mysteriously dissappearing (no army or death records). What I'm think is that JHB could have been an on the run consciencious objector or early deserter who changed his name from William Eva. Hence both mysteries above and the moves gradually south. I know it seems unlikely but many consciencious objector's and deserters kept up the charade for a long while after the war as they were still likely to recieve severe punishment years later.
Virtually the above scenario is covered in an episode of 'Who Do You Think You Are' with Alan Carr, so it has been known to be the solution to family mysteries before now.
But maybe I'm clutching at straws, and how to prove it even it were true. You'd really need secret family letters or something I suspect.
And it's my pleasure, just wish I'd found something more helpful.

The Eva child is Gwendoline Margaret Eva who married Tenwick. The South Normanton (Mansfield) one is my nana. I am led to believe that they were travelling down to London and she was born midway. The other two are Doreen and Michael.

As to why they were in London I have not got the foggiest, but they returned back to Darlington by 1839 --- I understand from JHB's death certificate he work at the Supply Depot in Co. Durham somewhere. I think I will have to see if the records are still evident. He was a civilian so it might not be in military records. I have even gone back to trace where Gwendoline Atkinson could have met, following her through --- she is in two places on the 1901, one with her parents in Darlington and second with her aunt and uncle in Hull. Had me worried for a sec as both Lily and husband both had the surnames as Atkinson....I am relieved to find out they were not intermarried! I think next step will be to go for the birth certificates of Doreen and Michael and see if it lists address details. Thank you so much for helping -- this has been the one pain in the neck that has gone nigh for 3 decades!

I know this moving a bit sideways from your original question, but I notice you mention that all three of Gwendoline's children were recorded as Backhouse. A little research has revealed, as well as three backhouse's (one in Mansfield and two in Staines), one slightly older child recorded as an Eva in 1917 in Darlington, perhaps you aren't aware of her? If not then maybe it's worth tracking her line down (I already have a likely marriage identified for her) and seeing what they know.

Hi thank you for responding --- I have been down the Leicester route and it is def. not him. I am certain that they never married, Gwendoline nee Atkinson married William E Eva, ten years later she does not seem to be with William (I am thinking he died) gives birth to a daughter (my nana) and rather than being in Darlington she is now moved south. Each of the three children are recorded as Backhouse and the last two are born in Staines, however, on her death certificate she remains Gwendoline Eva. John Harold died in Darlington as did Gwendoline and so on. I am told that he used to work on the 'fairs' in the summer but not more than that. I have even tried checking the new voters register for London in the 1930s in a hope they moved just into the boundaries but no. How can one man be so illusive????!!!!!

Just to add, are you certain that John and Gwendoline were only ever common law spouses and didn't at some point make it official in retrospect or on one or the other's deathbed's maybe? It's just a marriage certificate of the couple would've come in handy at this stage as details of Gwendoline (presumably already known to you) would confirm you had the right couple and then details about John would confirm whether the one I mentioned was the lead to follow or not.
If India proves correct after all then I don't really know how to search this. Maybe someone else can advise?

There's a 16 year old John Harold Backhouse on the 1911 census living (and born) in Leicester. He's in a boys' home and working as a News Porter (presumably a paper boy?). Could this be your boy? Admittedly I can't see a birth certificate for him yet.
However in the 1901 census he is with his older sister Bertha and parent's John and Annie in Leicester but is said to have been born in Pendleton, Lancs.
Without having any real knowledge of your ancestor it's hard to say whether this is your 'John Harold' or not.

I am looking for more information specifically on JOHN HAROLD BACKHOUSE died 1941 believed to have been born circa 1894 (+/- 2). I have not found any birth certificate for him, family lore says he was born in India, possibly civilian family. He was beleive to have gone down to Staines, Bucks around 1930-1939 or so. Ended back up in Darlington. His common law wife was Gwendoline Atkinson (previously married to William E Eva) and during this period had 3 children, my nana and siblings.

Any ideas??? Please...it has been nearly 30 years of looking and still pull up a blanl. Thanks.

I am one of the descendants, also, and have been in touch with the Port Rowan, Ontario Backus group. George informed me of the same information about Sir Roger and corresponded with the wife, not Sir Roger, when the distant connection was made years after Sir Roger died. George Backus is deceased now and his wife Ethyl is in a nursing home. His daughter Wanda Backus Kelly is the inheritor of his family files, etc. Contact her at PO Box 24, Port Rowan in Ontario, NOE 1M0 instead of George. She is busy working and rearing her family, but should get back to you when she has a chance.

How interesting, I had read or heard there were twin sons however did not have any information on them. Do you know the (b) dates and/or the (d) dates of them, or approx?
I believe it was Sarah that my Grandmother Shearer used to take me to visit when I was a child.

Then again perhaps it was a daughter of one of the sons of George W & Martha A, Shearer, but I don't find another Sarah in my record. I recall her being called Saramart, perhaps a different person altogether!

I would supose you have read the papers that were written by Laura May Shearer? (Child # 5 of George W Shearer and Martha A Crawford) she has a lot of information and stories in it, however some things I don't believe were factual, or I should say not authenticated or documented.

George Wallace Shearer (b. 1842) WAS born in Pennsylvania. It is his grandfather, the immigrant George Shearer (b. 1772), that their has been so much discussion about. John Shearer from Texas (also on conversing on this thread) done a lot of excellent work on this. He even has paid for several DNA tests of others to help solve the mystery. According to him, the latest thinking is Ulster, Ireland, but SW Scotland is still a possibility.

Sarah Jeanetta Shearer (b. 1880)was my Great grandmother (7th child) who was an older sister to your grandfather, Thomas Ralston Shearer (b. 1886)(9th child). There were 10 surviving children in this family, but there were twin sons who died in infancy, so I have them listed in my records.

So you are a second cousin to my mother and a second cousin once removed (since I am a generation down) for me! Second cousins share a common set of great grandparents. George Wallace Shearer (b. 1842)and Martha Amanda Crawford (b. 1846) are the great grandparents in common.

I would love to share information an photos if you are interested. I was at one time in touch online with some cousins who were all descended from the eldest child in this family, William Crawford Shearer (b.1866).

He's a mystery man alright (including, as I'm sure you are aware) the fact that he told so many that he was the illegitimate son of of King George III! This line is frustrating. I am confidently way back in time on so many other lines. I greatly admire the lengths to which you have gone, paying for several others' DNA studies to try to crack this mystery. All of my family records have always stated that he was born in Ireland. The Shearers and the Crawfords have a tight relationship and marry each other quite a bit. I'm descended from both. The Crawfords were Ulster Scots too. If you will e-mail me, I have some things to say about photos.

You have probably resolved this long ago since your original post is from 2004 (!), but I have 3 March 1797 for your George Shearer's birth. I am descended from your George's younger brother, Daniel F. Shearer (b. 1801). George Shearer (b. 1772)and Sarah (Sallie) Backhouse (b. 1769) are my 4th Greatgrandfather and Grandmother.

Have you made any headway on George Shearer (b. 1772) senior? He's quite the mystery man. I've seen his country of birth as Ireland, SW Scotland and England.

I have Sarah/Sallie's parentage, but that's all.

Came across your messages to Sarah on Ancestry in 2004 just the other day. Now I'm wondering if there's any chance of me somehow getting a copy of your handwritten pedigree showing the descent of the Backhouses from Leofric Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva.
As an update to my previous message, I've just worked out that as the 1841 census rounded ages DOWN to the nearest five (I'd assumed it was up for some reason) my Ann(e) Backhouse was actually born between 1815 and 1820 somewhere in Suffolk. Checking on here and the IGI for original christening records has given three potential options. Two daughters called Ann of Thomas and Ann, in 1815 and 1817 in Orford. And Mary Ann a daughter of Philemon and Ann in 1816 in Sternfield. Does anyone have any information about either of these families and/or about the Anns thst I could use to eliminate an option. Or does anyone have any info about Ann in the Hoxne Union Workhouse in Stradbroke, mother of James b 8/1/1840, who I believe died in 1841?
Any help, info or ideas at all will be greatfully recieved even if you're not sure if what you've got is relevant.
Thanks in advance

My 2xGreat Grandfather is James Backhouse b8/1/1840 in the Hoxne Union Workhouse, Stradbroke, Suffolk to Anne Backhouse b abt 1820 and believe to have died bf 1851, as James is the only Backhouse in the workhouse by then.
By 1881 James is a well respected Police Constable married to his second wife Sarah Wythe. He had 3 daughters by his first wife Ellen Eliza Durrant and 4 children by Sarah, including my great grandmother Ada Jane Backhouse. James is said to have worked on the infamous ripper case of 1888.

Does anyone know how I could trace Anne further or any other info or help/advice?
Many Thanks
Dan Webb

A family called Backhouse lodged with Sam and Elizabeth Benten (my grandparents) in Sydney St Cleethorpes around 1920. I have several photos of family members taken by photographers in the Rochdale area. My mother thought they were cousins of my grandfather, but an aunt thought they were simply lodgers. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Mike Benten

I have 10 pages of genealogical material starting with a James Backhouse and covering from the 1600s until the 1800s when the book was published. It starts in Lancaster and then later the Backhouses in Darlington and their banking business. If you would send me your email address, I'd be happy to scan the pages for you and send them to you.
It is a very interesting family with their becoming Quakers, "Friends", in the 1600s. In 1824, a James Backhouse was recorded a Minister.
Anyone interested, send me your email address and I'd be happy to share the material.
Sarah McCray
saramac@windstream.net

Backhouse, Hawkins, Carter families

I have taken this excerpt from the post on an Australian general board and posted it here.

Searching descendants Backhouse/Hawkins/Carter families. From 1909 onwards in Australia. Or any information about any of the persons listed here.

This is the completion of the research undertaken on this family.

Mabel Grace Carter born 19 Oct 1915, Newtown, NSW. Birth registered as Mabel Grace Kimberley. Mother - Mariann Ivy Elizabeth Kimberley. Father- Charles Edward Carter. Lived in Tahmoor/Picton area NSW.

Mabel married (1) Jacob Backhouse 8 Dec 1934 Newcastle NSW. (Married as Mabel Carter)

Jacob was born 1905 Cardiff New South Wales Australia. He died in June 1941 in Tobruk Egypt.

Children of Mabel and Jacob Backhouse:

John J. Backhouse. Born c1937. (The J. is probably “Jacob”)
Dawn E Backhouse. Born c.1938.
Robert Charles Backhouse. Born 1939 – Died April 1941.
Jacob George Backhouse. Born 1941.

No information about John J. Backhouse. There is a strong possibility he may have been adopted and his name changed.

Have possible marriage for Dawn Elizabeth Frances Backhouse to Albert Arthur Hawkins in 1955. Parents of Albert A. Hawkins were William Henry Garnet Hawkins and Constance Mountford Russell.

Usual residence of Dawn Elizabeth Frances Backhouse was given as Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards, (on the marriage certificate).

Jacob George Backhouse was adopted and his name changed. I have sufficient information about him.

Mabel died 1972 Guildford NSW.

The only question attached to this thread is. Where are all the relatives of these people??

It was lovely to actually hear from a descendant of one of William Charles' siblings. Most of my Backhouse's that I find now are descended through his father William's brothers and sisters.

Have you had any luck with the Colston side of the family. I have had no luck trying to find the marriage for William and Hester.

I would love to share information with you and see if we can make any more progress.
Hi Nikki,

I am related to a sister of William Charles Backhouse (Annie Maria Backhouse b. 1852 Bath, Somerset).
