Julie,

I have been to that cemetery but don't recall Albert G. and Julianna being buried there. I might be wrong. Albert G and Julianna were my great great great grandparents. My grandmother was Sarah Melissa, daughter of Adeline Bacon. I know Adeline is buried there (Mrs. S. A. Hughes). If you have any more information on this family please E-mail me directly at greekbee96@aol.com

Thank you,
Melissa

Bacons of Goathurst, Somerset

Between 1579 and 1800, Goathurst has a significant population of Bacons. There are others showing up on occassion into the 1900's. Some of you have to descend from this population as I do. They appear to all be interelated in the early days. If you have traced your Bacon line back to Goathurst I'd like to trade information with you. willbacon@charter.net

Re: Nathanial Bacon Barnstable

Just a little more possibly related data:

George Bacon, Esq., son of Ebenezer, of Barnstable, and
nephew of Captain Daniel Carpenter Bacon, was of the firm of
Pierce & Bacon, 16 Custom House Street, Boston. The follow-
ing is from the Boston Advertiser, September 5, 1856:
" For Galveston, Texas.

" Pierce & Bacon's Regular Line. From Gray's Wharf, Bos-
ton. Brig Vesta, H. L. Sheffield, Master. For freight or pas-
sage apply to Pierce & Bacon."

Other vessels of this line were barques Trinity, Brayos,
Island City, San Jacinto and Miss Mag (the latter named for
Mrs. General Nichols, of Galveston), brig Empire and ship
Samuel C. Grant, named for Mr. Bacon's father-in-law, a ship-
builder of Hallowell, Me. Captains John Turner Hall and Ben-
jamin Hinckley, of Barnstable, commanded some of these vessels.
One or two of the barques were in Galveston, loading cotton,
when the war broke out, and were burned and scuttled by the
confederates, and one vessel was taken by the Alabama. The
ship Samuel C. Grant was lost about 1866.

After 1866, Mr. George Bacon* removed his business to New
York. He lived in Brookline, Mass., as early as 1852, and for
some years afterward.

Captain Edward Bacon, of Barnstable, was Master of the first
ship Hoogly, owned by his brother, Captain Daniel Carpenter
Bacon, and made voyages in her to Calcutta and Bombay.

The second ship Hoogly owned by Daniel Gorham Bacon, was
at one time commanded by William Wallace Frost, of Hyannis.
He also commanded the ship St. David.

Captains Crocker Nye, James Baxter, Joshua Chamberlain,
Job Handy, and Myron R. Peak, were Barnstable men. The lat-
ter commanded the brig Aristos.

* I am indebted to his sons, Horace Bacon, of New York, and Vaughan D.
Bacon, of Barnstable, for some of these notes.

This from book---BARNSTABLE AND YARMOUTH ---SEA CAPTAINS AND SHIP OWNERS byFRANCIS WILLIAM SPRAGUE

at

http://www.archive.org/stream/barnstableyarmou00spra/barnsta...
CATHERINE BACON (C. 1780-1866)

My ancestor was CATHERINE BACON LAMBERT (C. 1780-1866) who was born in Ireland, c. 1780. She married Joseph Lambert
(c.1760-1851) from the old Galloway region of SW Scotland; Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire comprise Galloway.
Because those two counties are just a short distance across the channel from Ireland, I feel that Ulster is the most likely place for Catherine's birth.

Catherine and Joseph were married c. 1804, possibly in Ireland as that is where she was from; but could have been Scotland.

If of any clues to the Bacon side, I will list their children's names, all surnamed LAMBERT:
(1) Michael, BORN C. 1805, possibly in Ireland.
(2) Andrew born 1807 in Edinburgh----as were all of the rest of the children.
(3) John, born c. 1811
(4) Margaret , born c. 1814
(5) Mary, born c. 1822
(6) Catherine, born c. 1825
(7) Edward, born c. 1828

There is an adamant claim in the family that our Bacon line is related to Sir Francis Bacon. We know that neither Francis nor brother Anthony had any children. They were from the 2nd marriage of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, essentially Attorney General in the reign of Elizabeth I. Sir Nicholas's first marriage to Jane Fernley produced a number of children, and among sons' names there was an Edward and an Edmund. Catherine had a son Edward and a grandson Edmund.

Catherine Bacon Lambert and husband Joseph Lambert emigrated from Edinburgh to the hamlet of Mooers Forks, Clinton County, NY in 1832.

Any information will be greatly appreciated: information, conjectures/surmises, suggestions, referrals, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance.

Jerry Brosious
Minneapolis, Minnesota
USA

May not be the same Bacons. My ggfather was one Cyrus Bacon and one son, my gfather Bert or Wert? did in fact put some of his children into the Corvalis, OR State Childrens Home around 1933 or so, one being my mother Collen. I will call him Cyrus, was the postmaster on "Bacona", now it no longer exists except for one house about 8 miles north of Buxton, OR in the mountains. There is a road (logging) named NW Bacona Ridge RD, I have been there after a Bacon Family gathering about 5-6 years ago. Many Bacons however are buried in Cornlius, OR where it seems many families members gather after Bacona declined.

Well, Cyrus Bacon is my ggfather, Bert (Wert?) Bacon my gfather, Collen Bacon my mother.

I hear from the Bacons I know, that he was a logger and postmaster in the mountains of Northwest Oregon, in a town named after his namesake "Bacona". I have found an OLD map showing such a town. This is located 20-30 miles north of Forest Grove on State Hwy 8. Ther are several (6-10) graves in Cornlius, Or, our family plot. The last of my mother's generations passed a few years ago and the many children of that generation have scattered.

Let me know if this is on the mark and I can dig up more info. email me at alliedvan@aol.com

Re: Charles Bacon/Elizabeth Hamel

I did a search of the Canadian Census data for Quebec, Quebec, Canada from 1861 to 1901 and found the following information:

Charles Bacon was born 8 Nov 1824 in Bas Canada (Quebec), he and his family lived for most of his life in St. Roch South, Quebec East, in the Ward of St. Sauveur. He was a journalier for most of his life, however, in 1901 he is listed as a chef.

The website: www.familysearch.org lists the date of marriage for Charles Bacon and Elizabeth Hamel as 6 Nov 1849 in Quebec, Quebec, Quebec.

Elizabeth Bacon (her surname was listed as Hamel in the 1861 Census for Canada) was born 2 Jan 1828 in Bas Canada (Quebec).

Charles Bacon and Elizabeth Hamel Bacon had the following children who were listed in various census data:

Philibert, male, born in 1855 Bas Canada (Quebec)
Delvina, female, (listed as Malvina in 1861) was born in 1857 Bas Canada
Aubeline, female, (listed as Adeline in 1861) was born in 1858 Bas Canada
Delphis, male, born about 1865
Leda, female, born about 1868
Elmire, female, born about 1857

A Leda Mailhote, age 11, was listed as a "lodger" in the 1891 Census for Canada.

In the 1901 Census for Canada for Quebec East, District 183, Quebec City East, Saint Sauver (Ward/Quartier), you find:

Charles Bacon, 76, birthdate: 3 Nov 1824, Occ: chef, racial origin: french, nationality: Canadian, Religion: Roman Catholic, born in Quebec

Elizabeth Bacon, 73, wife, birthdate: 2 Jan 1828, born in Quebec

In all of the census records the family members are listed as Roman Catholic, of French Origins, but born in Quebec.

If you want to find additional information, I would suggest visiting your local family history center and ordering the following microfilm to view which has the church records (baptisms, marriages, and burials) listed for the St. Sauveur:

Title Registres paroissiaux, 1867-1876
Authors Eglise catholique. Check out the links below:

http://www.canadianbirthcertificate.com/quebec.html

http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/death.html

http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazfd/gazfd71k.htm

http://www.genealogylinks.net/canada/quebec/

Once you find the date of death for Charles, you may be able to obtain a will or probate papers, which might shed some additional info about this family.

Re: Ebenezer Bacon b 1752, of Charlton, New Salem, and Petersham, Massachusetts

I have just received the will of Ebenezer BACON of Petersham, MA, written in 1821. He died in Petersham on 25 Apr 1827. His will leaves nearly everything to his wife, Anna. Next, he mentions only two children: Elizabeth KING, wife of Amos King and Jonathan BACON, deceased. Children of Jonathan Bacon (Sr.) inherit their deceased father's portion. Their names were Maria Anna and Jonathan Bacon (Jr.), but no mention of their ages, or residence.

Jonathan Bacon Sr. is believed to have married Nabby Smith in 1812, New Salem, MA. Charlton, Worcester, MA Vital Records lists Jonathan Bacon, husband of Abigail died 17 Nov 1818, so the children would have been born between 1813-1819, approximately.

Ebenezer's wife, Anna is believed to be Anna LONG (probably the daughter of James Long and Elizabeth Cooke, of Douglas, Worcester, MA). Ebenezer and Anna married in 1788 Charlton, Worcester, MA, where Ebenezer had been living with his older brother, Daniel BACON.
Anyone connected to these lines is welcome to share information!

Martha Bacon Who Married Anthony Smith - CORRECT Parentage?

I'm seeking the correct parentage of Martha Bacon who married Anthony Smith & who's daughter Abigail married Lewis Burwell.

I'm trying to establish as best I can & far as I can my direct Mitochondrial DNA line. What I have as thus:

William Henry "Hank" Rogers, son of
Edward Henry Rogers & Joyce Elaine Sharp, daughter of
Harvey McJunkin Sharp & Emma Louise Hedrick, daughter of
John Richard "Dick" Hedrick & Callie Frances Smith, daughter of
John Christopher Smith & Louisa Craft Wood, daughter of
Thomas David Wood & Frances Thacker Harvey, daughter of
Col. Lewis S. Harvey & Frances Thacker Burwell, daughter of
Nathaniel Burwell & Martha Armistead Digges, daughter of
Hon. Dudley Digges & Martha Burwell Armistead, daughter of
Henry Armistead & Martha Smith Burwell, daughter of
Lewis Burwell & Abigail Bacon Smith, daughter of
Anthony Smith & Martha Bacon, daughter of
(here it gets sketchy, there are several genealogies with varying reports of parentage.)

It appears that Sir Nicholas Bacon, Keeper of the Great Seal under Queen Elizabeth I, had a sister named Thomasine who married (as his 2nd wife) Sir Valentine Browne, Knt., of Crofts, in Lincoln County, England. Her son, Sir Thomas Browne, lived in Hospital, County Limerick, Ireland. He died in 1640 and was apparently buried there.

The following excerpt is contained on page 133 of The general armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales : comprising a registry of armorial bearings from the earliest to ...

"Browne (Hospital co.
BACON, likely from IRELAND, ULSTER

My ancestor is CATHERINE BACON who was born c. 1780 in Ireland, almost certainly from Ulster. She married Joseph Lambert, place unknown. He was from the old Galloway region of Scotland, which comprises Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire in extreme SW Scotland, a very short distance from Ulster.

I am seeking the origins of Catherine: birthplace, parents, ancestry, etc. There is an adamant claim in the family that she was related to Sir Francis Bacon who had no children, but his father Sir Nicholas Bacon had other sons with descent.

Catherine Bacon and Joseph Lambert were married c. 1804; not known if in Ireland or Scotland; I would guess most likely in Ireland. By 1807 they were living in Edinburgh, Scotland.

If of any clues to Catherine's origins, her chidlren's names were : Michael, Andrew, John, Margaret, Mary, Katherine, and Edward. This family immigrated to Mooers Forks, Clinton County, NY in 1832.

Any information, surmises, referrals, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance.
Jerry Brosious
Minneapolis, Minnesota
USA

Nathanial, and a daughter. Christopher and Joan become Quakers. I suspect the Edington Bacons descend from a brother of Christopher.

Sorry Barb:

Posted this message to get a general connection to the Bacon family. This is kind of an off shoot of my maternal grandmothers line. I have Ernest Edward Bacon b. 9May 1904 and Frank D. W. Bacon b. 20 Mar. 1910. These two brothers married two of my grandmothers sisters. Their father was Wellington Arnold Bacon and his father was Nelson Arnold Bacon.

Do these names connect with you.

Regards
Deb

Hi Stewart,

Its nice to hear from you. I do have a book, probably the same one you have, written by Vance Wampler. I have heard many stories from my Grandmother, Georgia Ann (Kirkland) Smith. She has also told me there are many truths to the stories in the book. I would also love to visit Kirkland Valley and will make it there someday. I wish there was a reunion of William H. and Missouri Ann Kirkland decendants, I would enjoy attending it. Maybe one should be arranged and all of us distant relatives could finally meet.
I would also like to see the original Kirkland homestead, however much is left of it. I have very little info about Hugh Allen but I can gather what I have and send you some info. We'll have to keep in contact with each other. Thanks for contacting me.

Kevin Leab

I live in Tempe, AZ. I'm a descendant of Elizabeth Kirkland, William's Daughter. I can point you to info on Kikland Valley, and a book our family had written on W.H.K. It's written by a cowboy, but I've managed to confirm most of the stories in other published texts. Also, I can point you to several Arizona Text Books that breifly mention his noteable accomplishments.

The place I would like to visit is Canoa Ranch, south of Tucson, where W.H.K ranched the first cattle by an Anglo in the Arizona Territory.

The town of Kirkland recently had a town hall meeting dedicated to W.H.K and his family. Each of the familial lines had a chance to share stories. I will ask about the house in Kirkland. As far as I know there are remnants of it still there.

If you have recently found info on Hugh Allen I am interested. Can you please send me info? Also, if you have books you've read, please send names, etc.

Stewart

This is crazy - I am pretty sure that we are related here. This will depend if we are talking about the same Eugene Lamb Richards (or family of them) - how many are there?! In fact, scrap that - I've just googled it and we ARE talking about the same one! This is so strange. I live in England, where are you living? Anthony Lamb Richards (my father) moved over here some time in the 70s or 80s I think, although sadly he died of cancer a few years ago. Would love to hear what you know about our family so please do email me! hannahkrichards@hotmail.co.uk

Re: Bacons of Rossie and Lowville

You do not mention when your Bacons were in Lowville, New York. A possible family connection may be to the family of Timothy Bacon and Sybil Parker, both of whom died in Lowville. Here is the family information on have on Timothy and Sybil with the sources below. Note: I believe source Thomas W. Baldwin in his "Michael Bacon of Dedham" (1915) to be incorrect about Timothy's birth and parents, and address that issue in a separate post on May 24, 2009.

1. TIMOTHY17 BACON (JOHN16, STEPHEN15, JOHN14, MICHAEL13, MICHAEL12, JOHN11, THOMAS10, JOHN9, EDMUND8, JOHN7, JOHN6, JOHN5, JOHN4, JOHN3, ROBERT2, ROBERT KIMBER1)1 was born 29 March 1751 in Needham (later Natick), Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and died 4 May 1823 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York.
