Was your William F. Bain (born 1893 and died 1914) murdered in Aubrey, Denton County, Texas? I just came across a disturbing news article that would indicate one of our ancestors murdered him. My husband's gg-aunt Taudia Mae Curbow married Houston Headrick. Any details you could share about the circumstances would be appreciated. Here is the article:
The Dallas Morning News, April 6, 1915
Houston Headrick Given Five Years
Denton, Texas, April 7 - A verdict of five years in the penitentiary was returned today by a jury before which Houston Headrick entered a plea of guilty to murder. Headrick, with his father, J.R. Headrick, was indicted at the August term of the grand jury on a charge of killing Bill Bain on July 4 of last year at the latter's home near Aubrey. The elder Headrick was convicted at the August term of District Court and received a sentence of five years.

Re: Looking for ancestors (Bain's from Scotland)

Hi,

I am a Bain descendent of Hugh Bain (born 1764 in Scotland and died in 1810 in Robeson North Carolina). He was married to Nancy McRae (she died in 1823 in Robeson North Carolina). Hugh was the first Bain in my line to come to America from Scotland and they settled in Robeson North Carolina.

Hugh & Nancy's children are listed as Alexander, James (1787-1846), Margaret, William C. (1789-1846), Murdock (1795-1879), John (1797-1860), Jeanette (1798-1846) and Isabella (b.1827).

I am trying to get solid confirmation as to who Hugh Bain's parents are. I have read conflicting stories that their names were William Bain and Isabella McKenzie BUT I also have a Bain family history book that lists Hugh's mother's name as Elizabeth (no father's name listed in the book), who was a wealthy woman that lived in Scotland and England.

Elizabeth also had other children listed, including a son named Alexander who was a sea merchant and lived in the Bahamas for a while.

My line migrated to Attala County, Mississippi and is as follows: Hugh Bain (1764-1810), Murdock Bain (1795-1879), Hugh Bain (1840-1933), Daniel Lafayette Bain (1878-1954) and Quitman Lafayette Bain (1917-1996).

If anyone has information regarding this family, please contact me. I would love to get to the bottom of this mystery and be able to trace my family even further back in Scotland history.

Thank you!

I have access to some research that my mother did. How has your research progressed over the past 9 years? Also, which part of the family do you decend from. What started my search was trying to determine what happened to a cousin, Richard, grandson of Iola Walter.

My ggrandmother is Maria Graham Bain (by blood) or OHara (by adoption) or Drew (by marriage). She was born, baptized, and adopted on the 8th of June 1900. I have her adoption certificate that states that George Bain and Mary Smith are her parents by blood, and that John OHara and Maria Newton adopted her. I also know that George Bain is from Ontario, while John OHara is from Quebec.

William Bain and Janet Turnbull had twelve children and your Alexander was number seven. Their parents were George Bone/Bain abt 1738 and Jean/Jane Jaffrey abt 1742. Her parents were William Turnbull and Katherine Houliston. Janet was the oldest of seven children. My Renton ancestry has over 10800 names and I need to know what you have so that I can give to you. Do you need information on Alexander's siblings or just from him through his parents.
Curious about this Bain line. I think a nephew raised by the Allans, was from the line. He was born James Gibson Bain, 17 Apr 1904 in Canada. His mother was Mary Ramsay of Caledonia, Haldimand County, Ontario, and father, also James Gibson Bain, b. 21 Feb 1899 in Caledonia. When his mother passed soon after his birth, he was taken to his aunt Esther Ramsay to live with her and her family, husband was Daniel Allan. He then seems to have used the first name of Allan.

Sure seems like he would be of this Bain line. Would like to learn more. Also what was the rebellion of 1837 to which you refer?

Daniel Bean/Bain's ancestors

I think I have found our Bain family beginnings. James Bayne a descendant and Bain researcher had told
me that the story that was passed down through his
family was that our Bain/Bane/Bean had came to America
in the late 1600s and I don't remember but I think he might have said it was around 1690. There was supposed
to have been 5 brothers that came to America. I think that this family of Banes would be a good place to look for a connection to our line. Some of this family had changed the spelling of their name to Bean about 1730-1740 and move to
Augusta County Virginia in the 1740s. Marty Restivo

# Birth: 1650 in Scotland
# Death: 1747 in Goshen, PA, Chester Co.
# Sex: M
# Name: James BANE
# Note: Immigration: 1688 to America

Father: James BANE b: in Scotland
Mother: Elizabeth CLARK

Marriage 1 Helen THOMPSON b: bef 1662 in East Lothian, Scotland

* Married: 3 Apr 1677

Children

1. Mordecai BANE b: 1683 in Scotland, Inverness-shire Co.
2. Alexander BANE b: 1688 in Inverness-shire, Scotland
3. William BANE
4. Nathan BANE

Look at the Ancestor's of Destany Barker below. This is the same Bane family as above. Bane family changed their
name from Bane to Bean then to Bain by the late 1700s. I think this family is promising place to look for our Bain line.

Ancestor's of Destiny Barker

Ahnentafel, Generation No. 1

1.
Hi Nancy....good to hear from you...my correct address is the yahoo one. I have been doing lots of searching and yes Virginia is a possibility but so are a lot of other places...North or South Carolina,New Hampshire,Penn,Maryland,Ny,NJ....all places that the first Scots landed. I'm not sure if we'll ever find our family. The more I look the more I'm not even convinced the ship wreck story is correct. What I find is a bit weird too is that the John MacKinnon who raised Alexander came to Yarmouth the same year from the Isle of Skye. I wonder if there is cany chance he could have actually been on the same ship...all speculation!. Anyway I'm glad to see you on here. Look forward to hearing from you again.
Anita

Hi Anita,

I finall was able to get on line. I have been having trouble with my computer. I have two e-mail addresses for your. anitachristian@eastlink.com and christian_@yahoo.com
Are either correct? Do you suppose that Alexander might have from Virginia and vicinity and headed for NS? Just a thought. Good to hear from you.
Nancy (nhunt2@myfairpoint.net)

Hi Nancy,
Good to hear from you. Did you get my email at your fairpoint address? I just wanted to make sure it was the correct address before I blabbered on about Alexander. I'm not sure what steered me in the William direction. I started looking again about a month ago and when I went to the Archives and looked at the 1773 Yarmouth census Alexander was there...lived alone and the funny thing was he stated his country of origin as America. I ask the archivest if that was correct since Scotland was a choice and he said he must have told them that. That got me looking at info in the New England States but I could find NO record anywhere of him or really any Bain family during those years. Then I started looking back to Scotland and I went on to Scotland's People. You do have to pay about $11 for info...you pay the money and you get so many credits to use for records. A friend of my sister (Loraine) does lots of Scottish research and he told her a long time ago that he thought his parents were William and Hannah from the searches he had done but I never thought anymore about it. Ityped in Alexander Bain and the years 1772-'75 and up popped this one and more too of course but then I tried to find a younger sister and then up came Sophia to William and Ann Solesbay instead of Soulsby. The birth was in the same place. I could find no further births to this couple. My sister's friend told me that there was no standardized spelling back then so he was 99% sure Hannah Soulsby and Ann Solesby were the same person. He said they just spelled names the way they heard them at the time. I was talking to Valerie McKenna about it and she told me she had William and Hannah on her short list of his probable parents. But it is really still only possible. I have searched for ships that may have left Scotland Edinburgh area but they kept very few records. I've been looking at the shipwrecks again along the NS coast and looked at ships that may have come earlier to the States thinking they may have goen there fist some years earlier and then were shipwrecked from New England to NS but no luck. I did find in 2 records that his parents were Alexander and Beulah Ann Schoville but I could find no record of those names anywhere here or Scotland and I have no idea where anyone got those names. I asked the person whp put that info on ancestry.ca (Kate from Cape Cod) and she told me she had no idea where that came from but she did some looking around and could find no record of Alexander or Beulah in what she had.
So as you can see the mystery goes on. We take our turns at having a look for our great great great and in my case another great grandfather. Hope to hear from you soon. I didn't get an email from you.
Anita

Anita; I had e-mailed you. Where did you get the information on William? I would like to request the same info. At least the information on Alexander sounds plausible. I have been busy quilting that I have not done any research.

Nancy
