I found in the Chet Kennedy Book pg 202 tht Dan Baldridge jr enumerated above , the only Baldridge in Orange Co Tn in 1800 or 1810 was James ,son of Malcomb Baldridge and nephew of Dan Sr in 1800 census.,All others had "gone west". Previous to 1796 when Tn became a state, North Carolina cnty of Davidson,Summer, and Tn constitued the so "Mero" (now Middle) District. Dan,s sons William, Andrew W., Robert, Francis had likely movedinto this district prior to 1810. Daniel and 2 of his sons- Andrew and Francis appear on the tax list for 1811. In 1822 Dan Baldridge Sr received another land warrant from the No Carolina ST Secretarys Office #5071 dtd 1822 for preference of location and drew "#873" in Western dist in DB "D" pg 429 of Davidson Co, by deed of gift he deeded 640 acres to sons to Andrew W and William for the love and affection of sons., snd add and I will mail you copies, Billie Baldridge price pbillie37@yahoo.com

I have Chet's books and we talked on a couple of occassions. The Small Twig from Baldridge Tree is the one written by Clarence Shepherd. I also am a descendent of William And Janette Holmes Baldridge as well as John and Rebecca Clark Baldridge. I have managed to trace Janette's family back further than most. She was the daughter of Sir James Holmes and Lady Margaret Jane Jennings. Margaret Was the Daughter of Francis Jennings, who was the brother to *Richard and the son of Sir John Jennings and Lady Margaret Spencer... the line goes back further. *Richard was the father of Sarah Jennings Churchill (Duchess of Marlborough)...

Hello! I was just sitting here looking at my email when notice of your reply came through. Thanks for answering!

To be honest, I can't remember what my thoughts were when I posted that inquiry in 2006, but I am still very interested in the Baldridges. I am doing a lot of research in the St Charles Mo area, where my ancestors were from. My ancestors were there in the very early 1800's.
The McMillins- my GG Grandfather named the town of Weldon Spring and laid the plats for the town. Also he donated land where the town built the first church and first scoolhouse.
The Howells - Of Howells Prairie. Francis Howell was my 5th great grandfather. Thomas Howell was my 4th.
And the Boones - Daniel was my 6th great grandfather.

So as I have done quite a bit of research on these families, I do see the Baldridges were a huge family that was also around St Charles in the early 1800's.

What can you tell me about the earliest St Charles Baldridges?

I haven't yet found any Baldridges that married any of my McMillin's, but I suspect the Baldridges did marry into the Howell's and/or Boones.

Also, do you have any Baldridges that were in the company of Missouri Mounted Rangers under the command of Captain James Callaway? (He was my 4th G Uncle) Captain Callaway died at Loutre Creek in 1815 with my 4th G grandfather James A McMillin. I don't have my notes in front of me but I seem to recall there were a few Baldridges named on the muster rolls.

And one more thing, I am looking to find where the above James A McMillin came from before he showed up in St Charles in very early 1800's. It's a big mystery to me, and I'm always looking to find where the other families of early St Charles came from, and possibly find that James migrated with another family. As she became more homebound, she worked away many hours of her days hand-stitching 17 quilts this past year alone. She enjoyed a few beach vacations at Emerald Isle with her sons and a very memorable trip to Atlantic City and many all night Scrabble games with her sisters.

Her family was her life. Ruby was a woman blessed with many loving children.
John, Wm., & Alexander Baldridge
Since I last wrote the above info in the indenture lease of John Baldridge, I have visited Ireland and the PRONI Library and retained a copy of the lease mentioned above. My copy is very clear and easy to read. The PRONI #is D/2977/3a/3/2/8/1. I believe that the lease is my John Baldridge. His leased lands, from Alexander, Earl of Antrim, states that it is located in Ballymullrea (today it is called Ballymacree), situated in the Barony of Dunluce, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This lease is considered a 3 lives lease, since it mentions, for the life of John Baldridge, his eldest son, William, who is 7 years old, and John's 3rd oldest son, Alexander, who is 3 years old. The lease is signed by John Baldridge, Alexander, Earl of Antrim (along with his seal), and witnessed by Will Harrison and James Ferguson. Dated November 8, 1742.

While at PRONI(Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, located in Belfast, Northern Ireland) I secured copies of the Earl of Antrim Estate Books of 1734, Pages 20, 21 PRONI # T/904/1 as follows:

Parish of Dunluce in the Barony of Dunluce in Lower Ballymulrea, John Baldridge, this books lists the tenant's names, number of acres in each denomination, and the real value for acre of each denominations, so John's quality of acres is arable on Sandy hill, _____ (could not read, but believe it says red bog), so on this lease he has 57 good acres that is leased and paid on.

While at PRONI(Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, located in Belfast, Northern Ireland) I secured copies of the Earl of Antrim Estate Books of 1734, Pages 20, 21 PRONI # T/904/1 as follows:

Also, in the same year estate Book on pages 23 and 24, John Baldridge, is listed as having 41 acres, of which six acres is bog, 35 acres to be paid on. This land lease is located in Denominations of Mullaghacall, Parish of Ballyagheran, Barony of Dunluce, again this is from the year 1734. ( Note: that Mullaghacall is a place name and is in the Poor Union Law (PLU) of Coleraine in County Derry (or is AKA County Londonderry) in Northern Ireland.

John Baldridge is listed in the 1740 Protestant Householders Returns for North Antrim, Ireland Only the head of household is listed and has to be over the age of 21. Protestant in 1740, was any religion, EXCEPT Roman Catholics and sometimes the Church of Ireland. John Baldridge was living in the Barony of Lower Dunluce and in the Parish of Dunluce, when this census was taken. And note that this place and date very much coordinates with the lease John Baldridge had with Alexander, Earl of Antrim, that was signed and dated 8 November 1742, where John Baldridge, Parish Dunluce, County Antrim, of half the quarterlands of Ballymulrea (AKA Ballymacrea) for 21 years, and 21 years for each of his sons William and Alexander. (this was AKA as a 3 lives lease) Lease # at PRONI is d/2977/3A/2/8/1

It is important to know that there is another John Baldridge that has a lease with Randall, the Earl of Antrim, for John Baldridge, husbandman, of Ballymacree, County Antrim, of the quarterland of Carnanreagh in the Barony of Dunluce and quarter of Madebaney (Maddybenny), one quarter of Craigtown, half a quarter of Island Flackey, all Barony of N.E. Liberties, for 41 years consideration 100 Lbs. Rent 30 Lbs. And on 28 February 1729, this mortgage (lease) was inherited by OUR John Baldridge from his uncle, John Baldridge.
The lease states "28 February 1729 mortgage/lease, John Baldridge, nephew and heir of the above John Baldridge (above meaning the June 20, 1703 lease of John Baldridge and Randall), late of Ballymacree, County Antrim and the Honourable John Skeffington, Antrim, County of Antrim, of the above townlands. Consideration 550 Lbs. Endorsed: assignment of John Baldridge's mortgage John Skeffington Esq., in trust for Lord Antrim, when he becomes of age." So, from this information, we know that OUR John Baldridge has an uncle, by the name of John. The Uncle John Baldridge's lease is in PRONI # d/2977/3A/1/4/3/1 dated 20 June 1703 and the lease in which our John Baldridge inherits his Uncle John's Lease/mortgage on 28 February 1729 PRONI # d/2977/3A/1/4/3/2

In an article by Ian Montgomery, "Tenants on the Estates of the Earls Of Antrim in the Seventeenth Century" the uncle of our John Baldridge, also named John Baldridge is listed as a tenant, February 2, 1699.

I, also found at PRONI in the 1669 Hearth Money Rolls for North Antrim, Northern Ireland John Baldridge is listed as living in the Barony of Lower Dunluce in the Parish of Dunluce, Ballycreighy 2 Qrs (Ballycraig, Lower & Upper) I am certain than this John Baldridge is the Uncle to our John Baldridge. Obtained from the Presbyterian Historical Society - Church House - Fisherwicke Place, Belfast, Ireland. But, it is the professional opinion of Dr. Brian Trainor that Thomas Baldridge could be an ancestor, as there are so few Baldridge's in Northern Ireland and it is a very high probability that they would all be related, because of the closeness of the dates and places.

In the Parish Register Society of Dublin, The Register of Derry Cathedral (AKA as St. Columb's), Parish of Templemore, Londonderry 1642-1703 by William Pollard & Company, London, 1910. In this book, located at PRONI under the "Register of Derry Cathedral 1642-1703" I found the following Baldridge's or Baldricke's listed:

Parish of Templemore on Page 361, Burials in October 1701, Brigtt, the wife of William Baldridge, buried the 19th

Marriages in October 1702 on page 365, Marriages in October 1702 Elloner Brown and William Baldridge, married by licence by Mr. Edward Motly, the 23rd

Protestant Householders in 1740 Glendermott Parish, County Londonderry on Page 1, Altnagelvin: Cloud McDonnall, John Kelly, Thos Baldrige

Derry Cathedral on page 145, Baptisms of December 1661, Andrew the son of John Baldericke, bap. the 20th, John Newton, Andrew Miller, Isabell Douglas, gossips.

Derry Cathedral on page 94 and page 50, more births and Baptisms in June 1658, Francis the daughter of John Baldericke, Bap, the 29th.

Page 86, births and baptisms of March 1656, Thomas the son of James Baldericke of Andloe Parish, born February 1st and baptized March 13th.

Page 99 in July 1659, Margarett, the daughter of James Baldrich of New Towne, Limavaddy, born June 4th, baptized the 20th.

Page 104 in July 1660, James the son of John Baldericke, Baptized 26th.

Page 80 January 1655, William the son of John Baldericke of Glendermott Parish, Baptized the 10th.

Page 155 Katherine, the daughter of Neale McNicholl, bapt 13th, Knogher, McKilner, Wenifred Baldericke and Margaret ______, gossips. Sept 1663.

William Baldridge Lease dated 20 July 1637, Lease from the Right Honorable Randall, Earl of Antrim & Alexander MacDonnell, his brother, to William Baldridge, yeoman, of Crossreagh, County Antrim, of land in Crossreagh for 41 years. Rent 3 Lbs.10s.Od PRONI # d/2977/3A/3/2/56/2 (Note that Crossreagh is a townland in County Londonderry in the Civil Parish of Ballywillin (was also known as Milltown).

From the Connor Wills: John Baldridge, Ballymacrea (Dunluce, Date of Probate: 1713

Alexander Baldridge voted in the 1790 Election of Sheriff's Court, lived in Ballymacrea, Voted for LM

William Baldridge (From Connor Wills) Parish of Dunluce, date of Probate: 1707

Dunluce Parish is in the Barony of Lower Dunluce, County Antrim, a province of Ulster, 6 miles NNE from Coleraine (County Derry) on the road to the Giant's Causeway

Just a thought to ponder, in all the time at PRONI, that I researched for any Baldridge, Baldericke, Balrich, etc., I never came across the name of a Richard Baldridge, but there were some James', John's, and William's.
And we know that our John Baldridge had an uncle John Baldridge, that it would not be too unlikely, that perhaps our John's grandfather's name could've been something other than Richard. I, too am not convinced that my Baldridge ancestors came from Wales to Northern Ireland. Because of the early date of the William Baldridge lease, many of the "Ulster Plantation" folks were lowland Scots from Ayr and Dunfermline, etc. (there is a location there called "Baldridge", which is also listed in the Domesday Book). It is well known that in the British Isle's, that surnames were often derived from a person's livelihood or area of where they resided. This of course, is pure speculation on my part and would need to be researched. Any of the English, during the early Plantation, were given important posts and were made heads of the estates, they were not tenant farmers.

There are two wills for James Holme's in PRONI and I received a copy of each, just for the fun of it, both are listed as being probable forgeries. The amounts of the supposed inheritance is absurd, even by today's standards. But it is a part of our folk lore. So, it is still an interesting addition to our Baldridge genealogy story.

October of 2009, after several years of research, I finally found Alexander Baldridge's burial site located in Ballywillan Cemertery, just outside of Portrush in Northern Ireland. His father is John Baldridge and he also has an Uncle John Baldridge. I located the "old Baldridge family" homestead in Ballymacrea. The old stone house is almost in ruins, but is distinguishable as a former abode. The current owners were kind enough to let me enter the "old homestead" and take photos. They also gave me a brief history of the last 100 years of the current estate and the surrounding acres.

The old tombstone of Alexander is just barely readable; so I had another smaller stone made and repeated the information, so that it would not be lost to other "Baldridge" family members/researchers. Also, it is to be noted that the two d's in Baldridge, do appear on the gravestone.

If there are any questions or comments, please address them to my e-mail: candicem2810@sbcglobal.net

John Baldridge or Baldrige from Ireland

I am a descendent of John Baldrige from Ireland born Abt 1742. Please note our family spelled the name Baldrige with one "d". My Father always said he thought those with 2 "d's" were related but did not have any documentation.
John Baldrige was married to Mary McIntyre, born in Scotland Abt. 1746. I would like to find out more about the family and try to trace the family prior to John. I also know that they first settled in Pawlet, VT. If anyone has any information on the family I would enjoy communicating with you.
Susanne

Hello,
I do have a Lovica Baldrige in our family tree born 1810 in
Clinton, NY, out on ancestry.com but I do not know if it is the same. I have exchanged messages with another gentleman on Ancestry. He indicated that he is descended from Lovica Baldrige Greeno.

Helpful hint. When searching try Baldridge with one "d". That is how our family spelled the name, however, my Father always said he thought the two were related but he did not have any documentation on it.
Susanne

Please see my response to Kim's original query sent today. I believe I have been at the cemetery. Is it near Pawlet? We spend a week each Fall in Stowe and have journeyed to Pawlet for information. I know that we did visit a cemetery in the area. Is there more than one?

Do you have any further information on the Baldrige family? Would you mind if we visited the area during our annual Vermont trip this year?

My Father's maternal family name was Smith. Supposedly Hiram Smith was from Poultney, VT. I would like to do some reserch in Poultney this year also.

If you would like to see the family tree it is out on Ancestry entitled Burgess R and S Updated 05312010.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Susanne

Kim,
John Baldrige of Ireland was my ancestor. Our family has always spelled Baldrige with one "d". However, my Father always felt that those with two d's were related but he did not have any documentation.
My great, great, great grandfather was Edward. We have been to Pawlet, VT. to see the cemetary and to view the Pawlet town documents which included the division of the land to his son's on Edward's death.
Do you have any information on John Baldrige from Ireland or his ancestors. Currently that is where I am stuck.
I would love to communicate with you about the family. The family tree I have been working on was recently put out on Ancestry and is entitled Burgess R and S Updated 05312010.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Susanne
