I know this was posted 9 years ago, but here goes anyway. I am the grandson of Jack Bancroft. I have done some very rudimentary research about my family tree. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help wherever possible!

Hello,

Just saw my posting from a few years ago and noticed a mistake. I found out after that that it was a daughter of Robert BANCROFT who married Asa MOOHOO. His wife in Middleton, MA, did not remarry after his passing - that I know of. (From memory, his wife was Elizabeth PICKETT, and she can be traced to the "Mayflower" days.)

I still don't know the origin of Robert BANCROFT. Contrary to mentions in books, he was "English" and not a "Native" as some had thought. But, no one knows where he was born ~1720 and who his parents were.

Robert's daughter, Sarah, married William WILKINS in Middleton, MA. They are another of my mystery couples. They moved to "Maine" during the 1770's, and I have no way of proving that they had a 6th child after they moved to the area around the Kennebec River. So, I cannot connect Samuel WILKINS, born "Maine" in 1770's to them.

My "suspicion" is that Sarah might have died as a result of childbirth in 1770's. And, William might have asked another couple to raise his 7 yr-old daughter and newborn son. (They had lost 4 children.)

Samuel grew up to marry Electra 'Leeta' (unknown) between 1790-1800 - somewhere. Another suspicion is that she might have been a Native American lady. I am descended from 2 of their children - through their grandchildren.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Robert BANCROFT in Middleton, MA, 1740's to 1790's ??

Hello,

I was just browsing my old postings on this Board, and was reminded of some of the information I know. What I was reminded of a few minutes ago was that the Robert I'm interested in was probably in his late 50's during the American Revolution. I believe the couple and the many children were living in Middleton, MA, during the 1770's. And, I was wondering if there is a way to find out if Robert participated in the Rev. War in some way. Perhaps "light service?"

And, some of his sons might have been old enough to fight in the War. The list of his children with Elizabeth (PICKETT) BANCROFT is in one of my old postings.

As per my old postings, Robert lived with the Ponkapoag Tribe in Canton, MA, from about 1730 to 1740. He was reportedly "a white man." When he married, the couple moved to Middleton, MA, where their 10 children were raised.

No one can place Robert, b~1720, with any BANCROFT or BANCRAFT family in MA. So, we don't know whether he was from a New England family, or arrived in the MA Bay Colony as an adult.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards, including a new Board for New-England-Research, and an older Board for CAN-USA-Migration)

Hello,

I'd like to mention that I'm still interested in finding out more about Robert BANCROFT. I had to be away from genealogy for a year, so I'm getting back to some of my "brick walls."

One question this morning is that I found a web page mentioning the BANCROFT and BANCRAFT men who fought in the Revolutionary War from what was then Stoughton, MA. There were 6 of them. If Robert was born around 1720, he would have been in his 50's during the War. Oh, just remembered he would have been living in Middleton, MA, in the 1770's - where his children were raised.

http://www.canton.org/native/1860.htm

http://www.stoughtonhistory.com/

After 2008 I found better information on the family, so my old postings might not have the best information.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards, including List and Board for CAN-USA-Migration and new Board for New-England-Research) (already a List for New-Eng-Gen)

I think this is the 20's or 30's as my dad was a Charter boat mate and then Capt. This picture has Capt. Tom Gifford as guide. "Uncle" Tommy was a good friend of my dad's.
does anyone have any pictures of their Steven Bancroft? This gentleman is wearing glasses.

Hello,

Have you searched all the new information at www.familysearch.org ? I see a possible family in the England 1881 census:

Name: Jabez Bancroft
Age: 47
Gender: Male
Birth Year: 1834
Birthplace: Bingley, Yorkshire, England
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Marital Condition: Married
Profession/Occupation: Timekeeper (Chemical) (Manufct)
Address: West Street
Census Place: Huddersfield, Yorkshire (West Riding), England
Disability:
Record Type: Household
Family History Library Film: 1342046
The National Archives Reference: RG11
Piece/Folio: 4383 / 10
Page Number: 14
Household Gender Age
Jabez Bancroft M 47
Spouse Deborah Bancroft F 49
Child Percy Bancroft M 21
Child Hannah Maria Bancroft F 19
Child Arthur James Bancroft M 16
Child Herbert Edwin Bancroft M 13
Child Oscar Bancroft M 11

...
I notice this family doesn't mention a son, Jabez; was he an older son who had already moved out?

And the 1891 census for England has a Jabez in Co. Yorkshire. And the 1901 census has a Jabez of about the same age:

Name: Jabz Bancroft
Event: Census
Event Date: 31 Mar 1901
Gender:
Age: 45
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Birthplace: Keighley, Yorkshire
Record Type: Household
Registration District: Keighley
Sub-district: Keighley
Ecclesiastical Parish: St Peters
Civil Parish: Keighley
County: Yorkshire (West Riding)
..

But you said the Jabez you are looking for was killed in 1885. Have you found any wife or children?

In the US those 1885 to 1895 years are hard to research as the 1890 census is not available to us.

If you go to the old version of the above site (Go to Previous Site), you find your family in the IGI but having a death in 1881.

Jabez BANCROFT Pedigree
Male

Event(s):
Birth: 25 NOV 1854 Bingley, Yorkshire, England

Christening:
Death: 1880

Parents:
Father: Jabez BANCROFT Family
Mother: Deborah Waddington

The IGI also has those parents dying in 1880's.

Just did a search on-line for the name, and found what might be your Blog with an interesting story about Jabez, the father, but it has a different date of death.

http://bancroftsfromyorkshire.blogspot.com/2009/08/jabez-ban...

Also mentioned here:

http://www.pickfamily.com/69.htm

http://www.pickfamily.com/72.htm

Have you found any information on which state in the US Jabez was killed in in ~1885?

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(Researching a Robert BANCROFT in Massachusetts who spent many years living with a Native American Tribe in Stoughton, MA, and remaining close to the Tribe for probably the rest of his life. I don't remember the years at 5 am (US), but I've posted about him many times. He married Elizabeth PICKETT and had ~10 children. But no one knows where he came from.)

There are many errors in the Bancroft Trees (and in Trees general) I hope people pay attention to your correction. Your Anna Ramsey Bancroft is the daughter of George, granddaughter of Charles, right? I descend from Charles' brother William. I took a picture of the grave of Sallie Bancroft Poole this summer (actually stumbled apon it while looking for another branch of my family) and am going to put it on Find-a-grave. Sallie was also a daughter of George.

I'm replying to my own post here, as I feel I've misled Bancroft family researchers!

Since joining NEHGS, I've found records indicating a Thomas Bancroft did marry both an Alice Bacon and Elizabeth Metcalf.

The will of this Tho. Bancroft names his surviving wife as Elizabeth.

However, there are also records of a Tho. Bancroft in CT who married first a Margaret Wright, and secondly a Gardner, probably Hannah Gardner dau of ??

I haven't sorted through all of the records, dates & places - but my post stating he did *not* marry Wright or Gardner is misleading as possibly there are two Thomas Bancrofts. I'm in the process now of sorting through hundreds of records of Bancrofts on NEHGS and just wanted to state my post stating Thomas didn't marry Wright or Gardner was based solely on the fact I could only find the records of a Tho Bancroft marrying Alice Bacon & Elizabeth Metcalf. Apparently there was more to the mystery of Tho Bancroft than I realized & I apologize for throwing anyone off the track here!

Whether there was more than one Thomas I haven't been able to sort out as it appeared Tho of Lynn, MA did buy land in CT. So, at this point my question regarding the possibility of more than one Thomas Bancroft in the same era/locale remains unanswered - will post more if I can get the records sorted out.

Anyone else researching Bancrofts at NEHGS or through other genealogical sources, if you can shed light on this mystery, please do!

The article does have many descendants after 1700, but there is no Robert Bancroft mentioned.
Thomas Bancroft (1622-1691) was born in London and was one of the early settlers of Dedham, Mass. He married Alice Bacon, who died about a year later, and married, second, Elizabeth Metcalf, with whom he had many children. About 1652 he joined the settlement at Reading, Mass and died in Lynn, Mass. in 1691.
Each of his children lived in the same towns: Dedham, Reading and Lynn.

Your Rebecca's parents were actually Thomas Bancroft (d. 1684) and Hannah (supposed Gardner). The New England Genealogical Society records show clearly that the Thomas Bancroft of Connecticut, died in Enfield on 14 Dec 1684 and married (1) 8 Dec 1653 in Springfield (CT not MA) a Margaret Wright who was the mother of a Lydia, Margaret, Anna, Thomas, Anna & Samuel. Then in 1668 he married (2) Hannah, said to have been a Gardner, mother of Samuel, Ruth, Rebecca, and Nathaniel. From "The Bancrofts in the Connecticut Valley" by George E. McCracken, PhD, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME THOMAS BANCROFT of Lynn, Massachusetts who was married to Elizabeth Metcalf and Alice Bacon and who died in 1691 in Massachusetts.

Just did a search in the indexes and he's not there - but that doesn't mean he's not in the books because I found people who were but not in the index. You can do a search for Bancroft and it will bring up every page that has a Bancroft on it (unless it's at the end of a sentence and hyphenated Ban-croft!!)

Might be worth a try if he was from MA - if you know his parents try looking for them too maybe??

Good luck!

It might - there are 4 volumes - over 400 pages each, however there's an index. Try Google books or Online library (google search brings them up easily).

If he lived with the Indians though, I wonder if he'd be mentioned? But you'd think at least his birth was or if he returned back to MA.

Interesting question!

Hi Paul,

I'm curious if the book you mention has descendants after 1700. I continue to look for the origin of Robert BANCROFT, b~1720 in MA (?). You can see some details in my several postings on this Board. I really have no idea where he was born; we only know that he lived with the Native Americans in Canton, MA, a great many years.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

According to the multiple volumes of "Historic Homes and Institutions and genealogical and personal memoirs of Worcester county Massachusetts, with a history of Worcestor society of Antiquity" prepared under the Editorial Supervision of Ellery Crane Librarian of the Worcester Soc of Antiquity and Editor of its proceedings; New York; Chicago; The Lewis Publishing Co., 1907

(btw these books are online at google books and Online Library - you can search for Bancroft and get multiple entries)

Rebecca Bancroft (and Nathaniel Bancroft) both born in CT were NOT the children of Thomas Bancroft. For one thing, the multiple marriages listed here and at other sites conflict. The volumes Historic Homes... lists only two marriages for Thomas Bancroft who was born ca 1622 in England, son of John & Jane Bancroft of England (original immigrants) 1) Alice Bacon who died in childbirth or soon thereafter in 1648 and his second marriage in 1648 to 2) Elizabeth Metcalf. Elizabeth is listed as Thomas' widow.

No doubt another Tho Bancroft existed in CT where Rebecca (and Nathaniel) Bancroft were born. There is much confusion about this, and the only reason imo that everyone ascribes Bancroft children to Tho Bancroft of MA who died in Lynn and was buried in Wakefield, MA is that he was a prominent citizen & landowner and many records of him exist.

If Rebecca's father was not so prominent or wealthy, chances are not many if any records of him exist.

My family tree has a story that contains excerpts from the volumes of historic families of Worcester, MA including Thomas and his wives and children. I recommend reading it if this is important to you. Rebecca and Nathaniel are not among Tho Bancroft's of MA children. Since he lived and died in MA, and since the marriages with Margaret Wright and Hannah Gardner would conflict with his real marriage to Elizabeth Metcalf, one must assume claims that he was Rebecca's father are incorrect.

The priority for me (since both Rebecca and Nathaniel, possibly siblings, are direct ancestors of mine) is to find county records in CT that accurately record their births and who their real parents are. Since this is the 1600s we're talking about, that's a difficult task.

Wow! I'm really looking forward to that PDF, though from the dates and the historical volumes of Worchestor, MA, Alice Bacon was the first marriage; Elizabeth Metcalf the second.

However, reading a historical volume of Windsor, CT gives completely conflicting information citing Tho. Bancroft as settling there instead of MA and cites the marriage with Margaret Wright which would have happened while he was still married to Elizabeth Metcalf!

Also, the Windsor, CT volume lists different children (including my Nathaniel and Rebecca who I strongly feel were the children of a different Tho Bancroft).

In anycase, the Worcestor MA historical volumes clearly state that Thomas Bancroft born ca 1622 in Eng son of John & Jane Bancroft, died leaving widow Elizabeth (Metcalf) Bancroft.

I have found evidence of Bancrofts in Vermont about this same time period and I can't help but feel that related (perhaps) but different lines are getting mixed up.

I do feel fairly certain that the Historical Memoirs of Worcestor Co., MA are accurate as Thomas' land holdings and residence was there, he died in Lynn, MA, buried in Wakefield, MA, so he could not have moved and died in Windsor, CT as that historical volume claims. They must be confusing him with a different Thomas as the research takes place many years after the era being discussed.

I am looking for information on the above Joseph and his sisters, Lucinda m unknown Oaks and had Lyman Oaks b 1807 Worcester County, MA and Abigail who m unknown Felton. All three moved on to Erie County, New York where, I believe, Joseph m Abigail Warner who died in 1843 and 2nd )Polly Dalrymple and then had 10 children in Oakland County, Michigan. Abigail disappeared from notice and Lucinda moved to Genessee County, Michigan where she died after a 2nd m to Colonel William Ross(where did they marry?). Lucinda and William Ross along with Lyman and others are buried in Avondale Cemetery, Flint, MI. Most of this info came from a biography/history written about a son of Joseph's in Oakland County. No mention of the parents of Joseph, Lucinda and Abigail so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, I'll check it out. I also found a wealth of info in online books at Google & Online Library. See my story on Thomas Bancroft as I just wrote it up this morning.

Yes I'd love the PDF - my email is dreamlode@yahoo.com

His only wives according to historical archives of Worcester County, MA were Alice Bacon and Elizabeth Metcalf. He did NOT marry Hannah Gardner or Margaret Wright. And the two direct ancestors I'd attributed as his children (as supporting documents said they were), Nathaniel and Rebecca Bancroft are NOT his children and may not even be siblings. I'd doubted it as Nathaniel was born in CT. Rebecca was born in MA, but may be descended from a different Tho or different parent altogether! Yikes!

I'm trying to figure out how to disconnect Nathaniel and Rebecca as Thomas' children without deleting either Thomas (as he may turn out to be related later on) or Nathaniel and Rebecca? Right now they're still on my tree as his children until I figure out how to do that, but they are NOT his children!

Anyway I've posted quite a long excerpt from the Worcester County historical books (no copyright according to Google) - and I'm anxious to learn more, esp. to find out who the real parents of both Nathaniel and Rebecca are as both married into my maternal line.

Thank you for your help!
A good starting point is the serialized NEHGS article, "Thomas Bancroft of Dedham and Reading, Mass., and Some of his Descendants" by John Kermott Allen, which starts on page 215 of volume 94 [July 1940] of the New England Historic and Genealogical Register. I can send you and anyone who asks a .pdf copy of the first five pages.

In 2001 I did extensive research on the Bancroft family and posted the results on WorldConnect. The entry for Thomas is at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
You will see that each fact is supported by source references.

Paul Bancroft Huntress

Multiple Wives Thomas Bancroft ca 1622 Eng - Masschusetts

Thomas Bancroft is a direct ancestor - but research is causing me to suspect there may be more than one Thomas Bancroft who left England and came to Massachusetts.

I'd greatly appreciate help as I'm finding this so hard to sort through.

According to sources Thomas Bancroft may have been born in Derbyshire or London England (I've found records citing both). Some believe he arrived with his father John Bancroft and mother Jane (NLN, though some claim Bonython this seems highly unlikely).

In any case there is record of Thomas Bancroft in Massachusetts about the time period John Bancroft would have come over.

Thomas is said to have married:

Alice Bacon in 1647 who died in 1648

Yet he's also said to have married Hannah Gardner in 1647. Since one of Hannah Gardner's children was born in CT, this seems to provide more evidence for the existence of more than one Thomas Bancroft.

He's said to have married Elizbeth Metcalfe in 1648, some records say Reading others Dedham, MA.

He's then said to have married Margaret Wright in 1653 in Springfield, MA.

All of these marriages can match to some citation either from Family Data Collections, US & International Marriage Records or American Marriages Before 1699.

There is record of one Thomas Bancroft born in Massachusetts in Lynn "Before 1637" according to MA vital records for Lynn, Essex, MA, listed as son of "John". This is also confusing as the Bancroft who immigrated from England was also John with a son named Thomas.

The dates to these marriages conflict, yet all have some kind of back up citation from the sources listed above; and there are many children attributed to the various wives.

Can anyone clear this mystery up? Were there two Thomas Bancrofts in Massachusetts, and if so which married which wives? Were both from England, or was one born in MA or elsewhere in the colonies?

There are at least 1800 family trees that claim Thomas Bancroft b. ca 1622-1625 of England who came to MA and some place him with some of these wives and not the others. I'm wondering how to find the truth in all the confusion.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

(I also believe I saw one spouse listed with the surname of Coggins, but couldn't find any citation used to verify her so am discounting her for the moment without something to back up that claim).

Rebecca/Nathaniel/Thomas Bancroft

I've read questions about Rebecca in an older thread, but wanted to bring her up again as she's an extreme dilemma in my family research.

My questions are, is Hannah Gardner or Margaret Wright the mother of Rebecca?

Did Rebecca have a brother or half-brother named Nathaniel (some sources show Nathaniel as being the husband of Hannah Gardner), fathered by Thomas Bancroft.

Who were Thomas Bancroft's parents? Sources I've read claim to disprove the theory that Thomas was the son of John Bancroft of Derbyshire England as he died before he could leave for the U.S. There is no proof (that I've found) that Jane Bonython is his mother - her dates of birth vary wildly, one places her in Cornwall Eng. which would make her about 69 at the time of Thomas' birth.

Other sources claim a different John Bancroft and Jane ? came from England who gave birth to Thomas.

Still another claims that the deceased John Bancroft's widow Jane, came to the U.S. with her children and the excecutor of John's will. Whether she was Bonython, I don't know as some sources place Jane Bonython's birth circa 1601 in Derbyshire rather than Cornwall, but still list John Bonython & Eleanor Myllayton of Cornwall as her parents!

I also have another confusing issue, as if Rebecca Bancroft and Nathaniel Bancroft are brother & sister, or half-brother & sister, Rebecca's line can be traced to my great-great grandmother Hannah Holcomb.

And Nathaniel Bancroft (Rebecca's brother)'s line can be traced to Hannah Holcomb's husband, my great-great grandfather, Milo Claude Rose!!!

That is too much of a coincidence and I feel I must have gotten off on my research. Any help would be greatly appreciated as to the lineage (ancestors & descendants) of Thomas, Rebecca & Nathaniel Bancroft.

Thank you. Linda

I just started the Bancroft line, although I am not related, but I have an abstract for our property that mentions Zelotes Bancroft and wife Alma H. in 1839, St. Joseph Co IN. After reading up on the county history Zelotes brother was William born in 1804, father Isaac who was a farmer in Granville MA. It goes on to say that Isaac was a direct descendant of the pilgrams that settled Plymouth Colony that there were 3 Bancroft brothers that came from England. In 1840 in St. Joseph Co, IN we have William and "A.H" Bancroft. A H is Alma the widow of Zelotes, later marrying Justus Hollister. I don't think there were any children born to Alma by either marriage but am curious what her maiden name was and also to know if you know anything about Isaac? I can see there is quite a bit written on Azuriah and am sure the Bancrofts from Granville are related, just hoping someone can shed some light on the Indiana clan.

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=19908&a...

Teresa Moran
Indiana
