Re: Banning/Bannon in Polk, Warren, Scott in Iowa; PA; Ireland

Our Banning name went through changes over 100 years ago. Maybe it was anglicised in an attempt to avoid discrimination often shown against Irish-Americans. Federal and State Census records and obituaries indicate that James (c1820-1887) and Maria (c1834-1908) Banning/Bannen were born in Ireland. Sons John, Lawrence, and James were born in Pennsylvania 1851-1856. Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA is where James Sr (1820-1887) and Maria Grace (1834-1908) are supposed to have married in 1850. In 1860 Davenport, Scott County, Iowa is home to the family of five Banen/Banan (James, Maria, James, Lawrence, and John). In 1870, the family are Bannon, seven now with son Benjamin and dau Mary Alice. The exception is Lawrence, who is listed as Banning and is a laborer with a neighboring family. Variations occur over the next thirty years (one year "Bannon, James O." for the patriarch). When the senior James died in August of 1887 in Polk County, the Des Moines paper printed two obituary submissions, one as Banning and the other Bannon. The Saint Ambrose Catholic Cemetery Burial Register notes him as Bannen. His gravestone reads "Father James 1820-1887". The large family stone is BANNING. By 1900 all references are Banning. It seems that James and Maria's seven grandchildren by Lawrence never knew that their name was anything but Banning, or that one set of their grandparents were Irish. Or they had forgotten. Census Records or references for specific locations in Pennsylvania and Ireland have not been found.

Re: Banen/Bannon/Banning in Scott Co. and Polk Co., Iowa

according to a copy of a family bible entry, your John Banning was John Bannon born 12 Oct 1851 to James(1815-1887) and Marie (Grace)(1834-1908)Bannon. Lawrence, my g.grandfather was born 11 Sep 1853. You will find the family listed in the 1860 US Census for Davenport Township, `Scott County, Iowa as Banen (or Banan). In census records, the first instance I've found of the ing change is in 1870, when Lawrence is in Walnut township, Polk county, Iowa as a farmhand with the Warren Sovereyan family, and James, Maria, John, James, Ben and Mary are still listed as Bannon in the 1870 census records but in 1880 all have adopted Banning as their surname, although in the 1885 state census the elder James (1815-1887), Maria (1834-1908) and Mary A (1863- ) are listed as Bannons in "Walnut and Commerce, locality", Polk County, Iowa. I have piles of info (tho not as well sorted and organized as I would like), but do not have records prior to the federal census of 1860 for Scott County, Iowa citing John (1851- ), Laurence (1853- ) and James (1855- ) as born Pennsylvania, and the parents James (1815- ) and Maria (1834- ) as born Ireland.

I have always been told by my dad that there had been some bad investments and the money that the Banning family had was lost but nobody could ever give any more details which has made reading these posts very interesting, thank you!

The only other information that I have been told is that Fredrick had a hand in constructing Upper and Lower Slaughter near Bourton-on-the-Water, which is somewhere we always visited when I was a child.

Sheila married Percy Hardiman. They had two girls (Yvonne and Julie) and four boys (John, Ian, Kevin and Neil). They lived in Brockworth, Gloucester. My grandad Percy still resides in their family home while my Nana Sheila sadly passed away some years ago.

Kirsty

I'm sorry for the late reply, but I'm sure there's a connection. My original ancestors are from Stow on the Wold, my recently connected Aunt could give me more information I'm sure. I have the 'Banning nose', as the more famous portrait, and my Mother originated from Hertfordshire and Yorkshire, but I'm in the London suburbs. I'm interested in any Banning history, I have a photo now of my much loved Grandma, who I never got to know. I found her house in Hertfordshire, Hitchin. I would love to find a connection, I know the family line held a pub or hotel licence, and my predecessors travelled, but I'd like to know more. I've visited a Banning grave in Herts, think it was my great granny. Wait to hear. Sally.

I know from my mother that there was a great deal of land and housing owned by the Banning family in and around Stow, so Bannings Alley is likely to be named after the family. My mother told me that when my great-grandfather died, he left 3-4 houses and money to my grandfather Frederick and a couple of farms to Sid Banning, my grandfather's younger brother. As my mother told it, Sid was a bit of a wideboy and my grandfather was a man who couldn't hold his drink and one day Sid and he made some kind of bet at the horsfair - my grandfather lost all the houses. My mother told me that Sid systematically swindled my grandfather's share away from him and ended up wealthy whilst my grandfather became very poor and had to return to farm labouring. Then Sid evicted him from the house and my mother and siblings grew up in extreme poverty, which made my grandmother very bitter against my grandfather and his side of the family. My mothere was fostered out when small because she was diagnosed with malnutrition and the family wished to adopt her but my gradnmother said no to that.

From memory, the houses were in a terrace in King George's fields and had adjacent stabling. I saw a photo many years ago but I have no photos, they were taken by my aunts and one of my brothers. You could try contacting my mother's aunt, Mrs Agnes Leddy of 44 Leyfields Crescent Warwick, she must have a lot of family memorabilia. She was Lady Mayor of Warwick for many years. http://www.warwickcourier.co.uk/news/local/make_agnes_a_free....
Francis Banning of Ohio, died 1870

I am currently trying to find more information about my ancestor, Francis Banning. I have found him in the 1860 census, living in Shelby Co, OH with his wife Mary (Day) Banning, their oldest son Harrison, and a Martin Banning that may be Francis' father. However, in this census their last name is listed as "Bannon." I've found Francis' gravestone in Shelby Co, OH, which says "Francis Banning, died 1870, aged 28." I don't know if the name might have actually changed from Bannon to Banning, or if this is just a mistake on the part of the census worker.

I know from my great aunt that Francis and his wife Mary died around the same time, probably of the same disease. Some of their children (Harrison, John, Elizabeth, Ruben, Taylor, and Orla) lived with their maternal grandparents (Jonathan and Matilda Day) afterwards, and others were "farmed out" to neighbors.

Now I'm trying to find Francis' parents. I've not had a lot of luck trying to trace the Martin Bannon or Banning who lived with Francis and his wife in the 1860 census. Does anyone have any information about Bannings in Shelby Co, Ohio? Or any information that may be relevant?

Thanks so much!

Jen B

Hi George, it's been along time since your last message. My mother is your fathers sister, their father was Walter Banning. Your father Ernest was born in Liscard, Wallasey Cheshire in 1905, he went to America in 1923 sailing on the SS Carmania from Liverpool, to join his father, Walter, our grandfather, who had gone to America in 1922 to join his brother Charles who was living in 448 Mott Av. Bronx, New York. What information do you have regarding the rest of the family, Walter Bannings brothers, Frederick and Charles, and their sister Florence, who all emigrated to America. hope this is of interest, the family in Britain goes back to the mid 1760's. I have also sent you an E-Mail. I hope you get either this message or the E-mail this time. Regards, Neil.

Joseph Banning was the son of John H. Banning and Sarah A. Woodcock. I think John was born in Mar 1852 in Allegany, PA. I don't know his parents. I believe Sarah Woodcock was born in England, the daughter of William Woodcock and Sarah J. Roeder. I find John H. Banning in the 1880 and 1900 federal and 1905 state census in Webster, Polk, IA. In 1910, Sarah A. Banning is a widow in Des Moines with her children Clarence, Laura, Joseph, and Stella. I believe the first two children were by her first husband, surnamed North, and adopted by John Banning. I can't find them in 1920. In 1925, Sarah is living in Bloomfield, Polk, IA, as is Joseph S. Banning with his wife Pauline Doyle. It is this family I'm interested in tracing. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I'm looking for descendants of Joseph S. Banning and Pauline Evangeline Doyle. Joseph was born about 1905 in Iowa, the son of John H. Banning and Sarah A. Woodcock. He married Pauline Doyle about 1923. They had the following children: Betty J. Banning, Fay G. Banning, Patricia A. Banning, Joseph Banning Jr. (19 Feb 1928 - 12 Nov 1998), Helen C. Banning, and Fred Banning. Joseph Banning Jr. remained in the Des Moines area. I don't know what became of the other children. Pauline (Doyle) Banning may have died in Austin, Texas. If so, perhaps she was living with one of her children. I would appreciate any leads.

Census records disagree where he was born but I am satisfied with Kentucky.
John's wives and children only knew of him being mostly in Illinois. Their mother was Eleanor Pruts(z)man--b Indiana, I think. I don't have my records out right now.
thanks for any information/guidance anyone might share about this family.
Pat
in Oklahoma

James Herman Banning was the youngest son of Riley and Cora Banning who lived in Canton, Oklahoma. Banning's sister Virginia is my mother's mother. Banning did not fly across the Atlantic, but was the first black pilot licensed in the United States in 1926 and the first to fly from Los Angeles to New York in 1932 with his mechanic Thomas C. Allen. I am Banning's great nephew and have produced films and books about him and his peers. My younger brother Chris Hart was just sworn in a a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Banning Branches

Hi all,

Does anybody have a copy of 'Banning Branches' by Leroy Banning at all? I only need the L section in it, and I'd hate to shell out about £40-60 for a copy only to use about twenty pages. If anybody does, is there the possibility of scanning or copying it for me. I'll cover any costs.

Cheers
