Bannen/Bannon/Banning in Polk and Scott Counties, Iowa; PA; Eire

In our family Banning has been used for the past 100+ years. Before 1890 the name was Bannon, Bannen, Banen or Banan. When James, born Ireland abt 1820, died in Aug 1887, the Des Moines Register printed two obituary submissions, one as James Bannon and the other as James Banning. The Saint Ambrose Burial Register lists him as James Bannen, but the family stone in the Catholic section of Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines is Banning. In 1860 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa James (1820-1887) and wife Maria (1834-1908) are born Ireland. They and their first child John are listed as Banen. On the next page, their boys Laurence and James appear to be Banan. The three boys are "born PA" between 1851 and 1855. In 1870 Polk County, Iowa they have two more children, Benjamin (1860-1926) and Mary Alice (1863-1939). A photocopy from a bible page also lists two boys who died as infants, Joseph (1858-1859) and Richard (1865-1867).

Sally is my father's cousin and that is where I have gotten most of my info from John Bannon 2 and further back. I have done a lot of my own research from his children through myself. When I saw your post I was hoping there was someone out there also looking at the same lineage, who might compliment the bits that I have. I did not know they were from Tempo. Are you personally connected to these Bannons? Thank you for responding so quickly and if I can be of any assistance to you researching Bannons in Bridgeport CT, let me know.

Hello Leah,
My Thomas Bannon is a mystery. He appeared in the Goulburn area to marry gg grandmother Sarah World (her second marriage, nee Tucker). They had four children: William, Elizabeth, James and Thomas between 1843 and 1850, but didn't bother getting married till 1849.

I have had no luck tracing Thomas but suspect he may have been a convict. I assume he came from Ireland, where he was born around 1806. I think this may make my Thomas a little old to be yours. What do you think?

He was a shepherd who died before civil registrations started, making it difficult to get any information on him.

Can you tell me the year the Devon arrived in Australia? It might help.

Thank you for the reply
Mal

William Bannon is also my gg grandfather. Before he lived in Tasmania, Australia, he was a soldier in New Zealand from 1846 to 1849. The records I have show he came from Ballymahon in Co Longford But Im not sure if this is the town or the parish. Can anyone please confirm that William Bannon's brothers - Thomas and John Bannon - were at any time in the military.

G'day, I have a Thomas Bannon in my family, he and his brothers William (my gg grandfather)and John immigrated to Australia fleeing the Irish famine aboard a ship named the Devon. Mother named Margaret (unknown surname) father unknown (possibly Patrick Bannon but not sure).
William was born in 1826 settled in Tasmania, Thomas born about 1830 setled in NSW it think, and John Born in 1849 knocked up his girlfriend was given money to give her to make her go away, but he took the money and split to America. Does this fit your family? as i don't have any information about Thomas or John and would like to find out more.
if this is part of your family I'll ask my father as to where they came from as he visited Ireland and saw the ruins of the family home ( he hasn't told me the town yet an oversight on his part).
Leah.*

I don't think this was true, considering it was in pencil, but he was her brother, he ought to know these things about his sister. I would think. I am lousy at investigate at these matters. and if you could see about this matter, I wouldn't have to look into my family anymore, because it been pretty much all solved. thanks to you. I only need a copy or like the paper
I found that you did. I don't know when you did this last project, but I just found it. I would really like to know this.Considering she out out of high school in 1943, and she married dad in 1947, I have 4 yrs to play. It just bugs me that the annulment was in pencil, what was the reason for. was it a actual fact?

I am searching for any and all descendants of Jeremiah Bannon, husband of Agnes Dawson and his brother, Michael Bannon. I can trace my Bannon's back to Ohio and Indiana in 1825 but cannot find the parentage. One of the children was born in 1831 in Adams Co., PA, a civil war vet, and I have his pension info. other children were born near Piqua, OH but I don't find anything before 1850 census to prove parentage.

Ida Mae was divorced, actually. Her first husband was Joseph Gunnell; sometime between 1900 and 1910, she married James E Primmer, from whom she apparently was divorced (1910 census record, Dalles, Oregon), and between 1920 and 1930 she married Thomas Mansfield (1930 census, Yakima, Washington).

I heard that Isabella Bannon's mother was Calystia, but can't prove it.

Death of Patricio Bannon - May 27, 1898

Article appears in The Weekly Examiner, Thursday, 7 June 1900

FOR MURDERING A BOY

Jose Ruiz Expiates His Crime on the Scaffold at Albuquerque

Albuquerque (New Mexico) June 1 - This morning Jose P. Ruiz, twenty-three years of age, was hanged for the murder of Patricio Bannon, a five year old boy, in this city, on May 27, 1898.

Ruiz showed signs of weakening several weeks ago and fears were entertained that he would collapse at the time of the execution, but this was not the case. He appeared the least affected of any person in the crowed of 100 spectators and walked calmly to his doom. No man ever faced death more stoicly than did Ruiz. When he mounted the gallows he was given the privilege of addressing the crowd. He spoke briefly in Spanish, which was interpreted by Nestor Montoya, as follows:

Gentlemen: Beware of drink. It has brought me to this scaffold. Father of families, train your children properly and teach them to respect every one and for the love of God keep them away from liquor for this is the cause of ruin. Now, friends, in these, my last moments, I ask you for the love of God to pray for my soul.

After the black cap was adjusted he was heard to say in a low tone"Adios," and the trap was sprung.

Matt and Ida Bannan

These people were my father's grandparents who lived and are buried in Alabaster - Alabaster Cemetery. Their daughter, Ida Bannan Wellna, is his mother. According to Matt's death certificate, he was born in Finland on 2/28/1865. He died 3/4/1948 in Alabaster. His wife, Ida Bannon, was also born in Finland...as were their parents. They are listed in the 1910, 1920 & 1930 Census records living in Alabaster. They only had daughters - Ida, Selma, Hilma and I believe one other but I'm afraid I can't remember her name right now. Their last name is written as Banian on the 1910 census and yet another way in another document I've seen. This happened quite a lot back then. From the 1920 Census, it states that he immigrated in 1890 and she in 1893. That census also states they were both naturalized citizens in 1904. I've been trying to find their immigration records and/or naturalization records - but no luck so far. I'm also not sure where they were married. Still more to investigate. I hope this has helped you. How are you related?
