Norm, I hope you're still around here and looking for an answer. There is a Stoney Creek Cemetery about 4 miles away near Barb Run. You can find it on Google maps by getting directions from Orkney Springs to Barb Run.

If that's not what your looking for perhaps you're thinking of the Solomon Lutheran Cemetery, about 11 miles from Orkney Springs at 521 Solomons Church road in Forestville. Also easy to find on Google maps.

Hope this helps. I intend to visit both cemeteries myself this summer.
Paul

Hello to all my cousins. I hope someone is still following this thread.
I am Paul Barb, Jr. Descended from Johann Jacob through his youngest son Peter, and down through Moses, Peter Bethuel, William M., Bernard, and Paul Sr. Now that I am retired I have the time to research the Barb roots, separate the fact from fiction, and verify some of the things I've heard verbally over the years.

I have a copy of a copy of the 1932 Dr. Kirk Barb manuscript. It has been a tremendous help to me in tracking down my own lineage, but it contains some errors that have thrown me off track for a bit. I think I have the correct family size, composition, and actual Philadelphia arrival date sorted out and would be happy to share with anyone else who might have questions on these points.

Moreover, for any descendants of Jacob's son Abraham and the line, Joshua and Daniel who moved the family to Alton, Kansas, I have a supplement to the Kirk Barb manuscript authored in 1948 by Clark F. Barb, late of Golden, Colorado. It has a considerable amount of information concerning the Kansas Barbs and I would be happy to share it with anyone interested.
Cheers, Paul

Since my first post in 2000, another Barbe researcher gave me information that Louisa died March 19, 1885 and that Elijah was born Sept 30, 1882. Another son was born March 16, 1885, however, I have no proof for that information. Were you able to find documentation for children of Eugenius and Pheobe? Thanks for responding.

Thomas Davis and Polly Mitchell who were married 13 MAY 1811 in Greenbrier VA.

RECEIVED THIS NOTE

I am working on my Mitchells of Goochland County, VA.

I have an outline history from an aunt who was born about 1844.

She starts with David Mitchell of Goochland Co, VA. He had 3 daughters, and two sons.

She has down" Sarah Mitchell m....Da vis. Only offspring listed is Ceasar Davis. Brilliant lawyer of St. Louis, Missouri"

David Mitchell's will lists "my daughter Polley Davis", in 1816.

Marriage records show Polly married Thomas Davis on 13, May, 1811.

The 1810 ten Goochland census shows a single male Tho.s J. Davis, age 26-44, living alone. Thomas is not present in 1820 Census. The estate divided the property into 1/4's. I don't know what happened to the Davises.

SOME NOTES HOPE THEY ARE USEFUL
OBITUARY
Denton, Texas- Jan 10.--Col. T.G.C. Davis died at the residence of his niece, Mrs. J.L. Ruddel in this city today in the 77th year of his age.
Col. Davis was a second cousin to the late Jefferson Davis. He was born near Richmond, Va. in the year 1814 and was married there to Miss. Sarah A. Thornborough, who survives him. He moved from Richmond to Paducah, Ky. where he practiced law for several years. From thence he migrated to Illinois in the year 1845 and was elected from taht state as a member of the state senate. He was also chosen as a delegate to the constitutional convention of that state a few years afterward.
He was a friend of Abraham Lincolin, with whom he practicedlaw through many of the cities of Illinois. John A. Logan and John M. Palmer were also associates of his in the practice of law. He was one of the attorneys who argued the famouse disbarment cases before Justice Field and gained constitutional point for which he fought. At that time he was a resident of St. Louis, Mo.
He was a life long democrat and took an active part in politics, but his main work was that of his chosen profession-the law. He came from Missouri in his old age and reclining years to this city, where he resided until his death. The immediate cause of his death was pnuemonia.

TGC DAVIS TO JEFFERSON DAVIS (LETTERS IN THE JEFFERSON DAVIS PAPERS) 19 AUG 1880 BOX 8,15 JUL 1889 BOX8,30 OCT 1878 BOX8,30 OCT 1878BOX 34

Name: T G C Davis Age in 1860: 46 Birth Year: abt 1814 BirthPlace: Virginia Home in 1860: St Louis Ward 5, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri Gender: Male Post Office: St LouisName: Sarah A Davis Age in 1860: 42 Birth Year: abt 1818 BirthPlace: Virginia Home in 1860: St Louis Ward 5, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri Gender: Female Post Office: St Louis
brother and sisterin law

Name: F L G Col Davis Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 Age in 1870: 56 BirthPlace: Virginia Home in 1870: St Louis Ward 4, St Louis (Independent City), MissouriName: Thomas G. C. - of Massac County

SKETCH OF THOMAS G.C. DAVIS
The most distinguished looking man who has ever resided in Metropolis was Thomas G.C. Davis. He was about 5 feet 10 inches in height, with a long body and finely developed neck and chest. He had a head and face like some of the handsomest of the Roman coins representing a Roman senator. He carried with him a dignity well adapted to his personal appearance.
His name was Thomas Gustavus Caesar, but he had none of the vanity that sometimes attaches to the name, and never wrote his name in full. He emigrated in the year 1844, when he was about 30 years of age, from Mississippi to Illinois. He came into the state with his wife and a small amount of baggage in a buggy without a top. He crossed the river and settled in Golconda. He was a man of remarkable powers of oratory. Only a few men in Illinois have been as highly endowed in that respect as he was. He was a lawyer of ability and also a man of large literary attainments. His talents were soon appreciated. In 1846 he was elected to the state senate, defeating Andrew J. Kuykendall of Vienna. In March, 1847, he was elected a member of the constitutional convention, which met in Springfield on the first Monday, in June 1847, and framed the constitution which was long known as the constitution of 1848 and which remained the constitution of Illinois for twenty-three years. In the meantime he had moved from Golconda to Metropolis and came to be known as the most distinguished advocate in Southern Illinois. In 1850 he became a candidate for Congress. He was a Democrat and claimed that the political management of the district had drifted into the influence of a clique and he refused to submit his claims to a convention. The Congressional district then extended from the mouth of Cache river on the Ohio to and including Marion county on the north. He made a complete canvas of all the district. Great crowds went to hear him and followed him around. The writer heard one man say in speaking to Davis: "No man can speak like he does without being endowed from on high." But he found the party machinery too strong for him and the regular nominee of the party was elected. Being a bolter from the regularly organized Democratic party he expected to received the votes of all disaffected Democrats, and of all persons who could be lured or enticed by his oratory and by the entire vote of the Whig party, which was only a small party in Southern Illinois. But some of the Whigs refused to vote for him because he was an expansionist. The question of the propriety of our acquisition of territory from Mexico was discussed in all political meetings in those days. The Democrats were then all for expansion-both the members of the regularly organized Democratic party and also the bolters from that party. Davis was defeated for Congress and then removed to Paducah. He afterwards removed to St. Louis and practiced law and died a few years ago in Texas.--Hon. W.H. Green
44. 89-85945: Davis, David Ragland, 1935- Davis families of American descent, 300 years in America : especially showing the interrelations of the Davis-Bowe-Ragland families and emphasizing the families that settled in Limestone County, Alabama, and DeSoto County, Mississippi / Memphis, Tenn. It is true through my research of Thomas that he was born VA. 1814 as stated in his obit, His obit says near Richmond? Thomas was a lawyer and a senator from Massac county Illinois. He was a prominent person in and of himself and I wonder why he would propigate a falsity? Also a fact of TGC Davis is he had a sister Louisa and a sister Marietta Davis WHOM wed Jeremiah French in Limestone AL. Louisa wed an Elkanah Barb and also lived in Limestone AL. TGC WED Sarah Thornborough per his obit in Richmond however record is found of a union of Thomas to Sarah Thornbourogh in Hawkins COUNTY TN. I am curious as to who this man is if not a second cousin to Jefferson Davis..

I have the 1932 "The Ancestors & Decscendants of Joseph Mason & Debby Ann Palmer" in .pdf format. The Barb information is limited but includes the author. The better book for you is the "Barb-Barbe Genealogy," Co-compilers Waverly Wilson Barbe and Alan Lee Williams, Honesdale, PA: Barbe & Associates, 1993, which is out of print but is in the Library of Congree and other libraries. If you'll send me a mailing address to kaon3346@comcast.net, I will gladly send you a disk. Art

I am particularly interested in locating additional information about Anna Marie Barb, daughter of Johannes Jacob Barb and Maria Catherina Richter. The dates that I have for Jacob - 1718-1819, so he is probably the same jacob that begins your line of descent.

His daughter Anna Marie was born in 1755 in Loudon Co, VA. Abt 1773, she married Peter Drumm (possibly spelled Tromm). Peter's family also originated in Germany. He was born in 1752. I am not sure of his birthplace which is variously listed as Germany or Loudon Co, VA. I am wondering if you information includes any material about Peter. He and Anna Marie are my 5th grandparents. Abt 1805, a group of Barbs, Winegardners and Drumms moved from VA to Richland Twp, Fairfield County, OH. They were among the earliest settlers in the area.

If you could provide additional information about Peter and Anna, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Ruth Hastie

I realize this info is many years old...but I am also descendant from the Barb family. I have lost track of my "cousin" Alan Williams who also wrote a book. If we can connect someway thru email, I'd appreciate it. Please email me at bobgoodiel@yahoo.com if you are available.

Thanks,
Bob Goodiel

Louisa Davis Barb sister of senator TGC Davis cousins of Jefferson Davis or not?

Thomas Gustavus Caesar Davis died 10 jan 1891 Denton Denton county Texas proclaimed in his obituary to be the second cousin of former CSA president Jefferson Davis and a personal friend of Honest Abe Lincoln.Being a senator and a lawyer one could imagine him as being a friend of Pres. Lincoln. It is true through my research of Thomas that he was born VA. 1814 as stated in his obit, His obit says near Richmond? Thomas was a lawyer and a senator from Massac county Illinois. He was a prominent person in and of himself and I wonder why he would propigate a falsity if indeed it is false as stated by several researchers? Also a fact of TGC Davis is he had a sister Louisa and a sister Marietta Davis WHOM wed Jeremiah French in Limestone AL. Louisa wed a Ekanah Barb and also lived in Limestone AL. TGC WED Sarah Thornborough per his obit in Richmond however record is found of a union of Thomas to Sarah Thornbourogh in Hawkins COUNTY TN. I am curious as to who this man is if not a second cousin to Jefferson Davis. Below is the info I have on Thomas. Perhaps some descendants of Louisa Davis Barb ffrequent this board and may have some idea of the ancestry of these Davises.

Name: T G C Davis Age in 1860: 46 Birth Year: abt 1814 BirthPlace: Virginia Home in 1860: St Louis Ward 5, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri Gender: Male Post Office: St

name: F L G Col Davis Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 Age in 1870: 56 BirthPlace: Virginia Home in 1870: St Louis Ward 4, St Louis (Independent City), MissouriName:

Thomas G. Davis Home in 1880: Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri Age: 66 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 BirthPlace: Virginia Relation to head-of-household: Self Spouses's Name: Sarah M. Father's birthplace: VA Mother's birthplace: VA

Name: Thos G C Davis Age: 36 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 Birth place: Virginia Gender: Male Home in 1850
(City,County,State): Metropolis, Massac, Illinois

W.H. Green
