I saw your message that Hoke Barbary and Fannie Hipp may
be your grandfather's grandparents and I am interested because Fannie's brother W. C. Hipp is an ancestor of my grandchildren. I have been working on their ancestry for
several years but William (or Wilburn) Curtis Hipp (Fannie's brother) still needs proof of parents.
So -- are you working on the Hipp line? Do you have any record of Fannie's ancestry?
I think I might be able to get copies of the obits of this couple if you are interested. As I say, I just found the connection today.

---Dan W. Olds

James Henry Barbery

Im looking for the forebears of my great grandfather, James Henry Barbery 1861-1935. I believe him to be a grandson of Washington Barbary, son of Benjamin and Sally Barbare of Greenville, SC. Washington had a son named James that died in Jan. of 1862. He and his wife Sarah (last name unknown)are listed in the 1860, Greenville County, SC census, along with their children Hiram and Mary. I find Hiram in later census records, but nowhere can I find Sarah or Mary. In 1870 I find a James Barbary living with Tyre Roberts, Washington Barbary's brother-in-law, and later in 1880 living with a widow Emily Barbary. I think my James Henry may have been an orphaned child of James and Sarah Barbary. Does anyone have any information that will help me prove or disprove my theory? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jerry Gault
jfg3387@aol.com

I don't think I can do anything but muddy the water but here goes. My ggg grandfather David E. Robinson married Temperance Barbary. I have her birthday as Jan. 24, 1829. There marriage date is Dec. 10, 1846. In the Washington Co. VA 1860 census they are next door neighbors with Smittick Barbary. David E. Robinson has an Aunt called Sarah or Sally Robinson. Her Father would be John Robinson Jr. John Robinson Jr. died July 8, 1817. I have no other dates for either of them. I am sure that Smittick and Tempenace must be related but can not figure out how. If my Sarah was your Sarah I only go back one more generation to John Sr. I have no dates for him. Thanks for any help you may have. Jerri Inman

Lucretia Thomas, children: Allen (1814), Smittick (1817), Quincy (1819), Margaret (1803). John B's second marriage to Mary Pope produced Redman (1819), Serena, Caltha, Alpha, Absobeth and Thomas (1829). His third wife was Grace Hanna Thomas, their children Willie, Peter J. and Mary Ann. Thomas was my ggrandfather and from there I have some information. Anyone who recognizes these names please contact me.

(?) Barbary m. William Fulbright, NC

I have very little to go on here, but I am looking for a woman with last name BARBARY who married William FULBRIGHT. She was probably born about 1765-1770, possibly in PA or NC. Her son Jacob FULBRIGHT was born abt 1786 in NC. Her husband was born abt 1764 in PA and died abt 1810 in NC. I know this is a long shot, but I thought it was worth a try. This seems to be an uncommon surname.
Thanks, Vickie

Re: Quinby Barbary m. Sarah Robinson, NC

You are right, the waters are muddy. Smittick is brother to Quinby. Smittick married Rebecca Robinson and Quinby married Sarah Robinson. I have not been able to fit Temperance into any of their father's (John Barbary) marriages. Quinby and Smittick have the same mother, whose name I do not have. John was married a second time, to Mary Pope by about 1816, and she died in about 1830. They were parents to my ggrandfather, Thomas, whose date of birth is 1 APRIL 1829 so if she is his twin, they would be separated by 2 months which I somehow doubt. Temperance is too old to be the child of John's other children, except possibly Quinby, who had two wives and did not start producing children until until about 1838 after being married to Hannah since 1834. His other wife, Sarah, he married in 1846.

This is a real puzzle, and hope you and I can figure it out.
