I would just add that there is no such thing as "the German Jacob Bare"! trust me, as someone who has more than a few Jacob Bare's in their tree, there are literally thousands of "Jacob Bares" of German, Swiss, Scottish and many other nationalities that settled in the US over the last few hundred years. and with the custom of naming every brother and son by a relatives name, there are multiple Jacob Bare's in every generation. So don't assume when you see the name that its yours, as that likelyhood is very small that's the case. Like anything else in genealogy, research and verify and confirm... and don't ever assume! Marge Bare, Portland, OR

I spend more time in Nevada because the weather is much more agreeable. My phone # is 425-238-4429 and my e-mail is marieallison@msn.com. Where do you live? I haven't been able to work on my family for some time. I have a photo taken about 1924 with my Grandmother and I think three others. We were told at least one of the ladies was her cousin. I think her name started with an O.
Thanks For getting back to me.
Thanks
Marie

I have just become acquainted with this board (thru my son) and I am
the great granddaughter of Hill Conwa Bare (note there is no Y on the
end as my father was named after him). My grandfather was Hill's oldest
son by his first wife and his sister was Sally (Sarah) Bare who had 13 kids
and I am sure that is who you are descended from. Hugh Bare died in
Wyoming. I have an original letter from his son there with whom he was
living stating that his father died from a "paralytic stroke" and they
buried him there. This letter was written to my grandfather, Charley
Randolph Bare. Their mother died when my grandfather was 12 years old
and Hill (Conwa) married the housekeeper who had been taking care of
their mother and the 4 children. My grandfather hated her so he left home
within a year after his mother died and didn't see any of them for years
after that. Hill went by the name Conwa (pronounced KON WAH not KONWAY)
This is a Cherokee Indian name that means Hill and Conwa was translated
and written down by the census takers by the English meaning, hill. That's
where the Hill comes from. It was not his name originally. Hugh Bare went
to court and changed the spelling of the name from Bear to Bare...not
knowing his ancestors would mix up a German family of Jacob Bare when
they were trying years later to trace their geneology! I have the family bible of
Charley Randolph Bare in which the children from the first and second marriage are listed.

This is my second attempt to reply to you. The HILL CONWA BARE that
is my great grandfather iwas a full-blood Cherokee Indian and no part of
the JACOB BARE family which is of German descent. My father was named
after his grandfather, CONWA BARE (note there is no Y on the end - and
is pronounced as if it were spelled KON WAH not KON WAY). My grandfather
was Charley Randolph Bare, brother of Sally (Sarah) Bare. They were
from the first marriage of Conwa - there were 4 children from this marriage
and 3 or 4 from the second one. I personally knew 2 from the second one
and 1 from the first one (besides my grandfather). Conwa Bare's father was
Hugh Bare and he had other families besides the one that Conwa came from -
that lived in northern California, Washingrton and Wyoming. Hugh lived with
a son in Wyoming when he died. I have an original letter from that son
stating, his father, Hugh Bare, died from a "paralytic stroke". I also have
the family bible of Charley Randolph Bare (Conwa Bare's oldest son).

So many people keep getting the German Jacob Bare family mixed up
with the Cherokee Indian Hill Conwa Bare family, who was the son of
Hugh Bare. Cherokee Indian Hill Conwa Bare had no twin sons by his
first or second wife. My father was the grandson of Conwa Bare and
great grandson of Hugh Bare (originally Bear) when he lived in North
Carolina before they were moved by the Union soldiers to Indian Territory.

I have a marriage record of an Ann Bear who married a John Huff in 1810 in Augusta, VA. The record says that she is given away by Jacob Bear, is of age (i.e. over 21), and is co-signed by Christian Bear. The marriage was ministered by William King of Trinity in Staunton, VA.

The Jacob Bear is NOT the Jacob Bear of Lithia Springs and would substantiate that there was another Jacob living in the County in 1810. There is a conjecture that this Jacob is Andrew Bear's brother. But Andrew descends from Jagely Bar. I suspect a cousin of Andrew and Ann is his niece.

You have traced up to Jacob Bare B 1755 at Augusta Va, D 1826/1831 in Clark IN. Wife Barbara (no surname) B 1759 at Augusta VA.
If the research I've found, mostly Jane Evans Best, is accurate, then your Jacob Bare born 1755 is the son of Jacob Jagely Bar, who had 5 sons. two of his sons (one your Jacob b, 1755) moved to Virginia with their father Jacob Jagely. One of his other sons, Abraham, is my direct ancestor. He stayed in PA, then Maryland, and then his grandson Jacob Bare 1778-1859) moved to found Baresville, now Hannibal, along the Ohio River in SE Ohio where they lived til the early 20th century.
I have lots of research and my Bar/Bear/Bare tree is constantly growing. I found your family on there and some of my information was different so I updated it from yours. I can give you access so you can see my tree. contact me at margepdx@gmail.com

**CORRECTION** since i posted this i've found that the above information I listed is NOT correct. Jacob Bare born 1755 is NOT one of Jacob Jagely Bare's sons. Jacob Jagely's sond died single, and is buried in Bear Lithia Springs so is NOT the same Jacob Bare from VA that moved to Clark, Indiana with wife and children. Jacob Bare is a VERY common name and I believe there must be another Jacob Bare born 1755 in VA that moved to Clark, Indiana.

Since I wrote this comment last year, I've found several sources that say that Jacob Bare, born in VA in 1755, died single. Therefore it appears he could not have been the person that married and lived in Preble Co, Indiana. Also, Jacob Bare is buried where he died, in Bear Lithia Springs near Elkton, VA.
I wanted to correct the misinformation that Jacob Bare, VA and Jacob Bare, Preble Co, Indiana are the same. The evidence does not support that.
I haven't found out where Jacob Bare, Preble County, came from, or his parentage, but some family trees claim Pennsylvania.

I had not followed this line but I do have info on ancestors. As I mentioned SH Bares parents were Jasper Newton Bare and Mary Atchley. Parents of JN Bare were Henry Bare II (buried in Birchwood in a field where he had wanted to start a church) and Melinda Frie (Melinda is buried in the Birchwood Baptist Church cemetery because, " I don't want to be buried in that field". She was orphaned in Alabama and her uncle rode her on horseback to Tennessee when she was nine. Melinda lived with her uncle Sam Frie and aunt Nancy Blythe (at least part Cherokee) until she married Henry II and they built a house in Birchwood on a large tract of Bare property. A house near the site has a chimney built on the second house chimney base. I have a picture of the second house as well as a picture of Melinda. Melinda died in 1903 about 50 years after Henry.
email me at: randolphjcr@gmail.com for more info and the picts.

I show a Seth Henry Bare as son of Jasper Newton Bare and Mary Atchley. Jasper was killed in the Civil war at Resaca,Ga (1864) and buried in Chattanooga. Jasper was the son of Henry Bare II, (buried at Birchwood,TN) son of Henry Bare I of Jefferson County Tennessee. This Seth was married to Ruthie Williams according to my records, I do not have names of children. If this is the Seth Henry Bare you are searching for I have more Bare/Birchwood,Tennessee info. My ggrandfather was Aurelius Marion Bare, born 1849.

Hi, I am trying t trace the Bare tree. My fathers name was Marion Bare born in 1929, his father was John Walter Bare born Nov. 1882, his father was Seth Henry Bare born in 1861 in Tennesee. In 1885 the family was in Montgomery county Kansas and they were in Texas by 1900. My problem is I cannot find S.H. on any census before 1880,there are 2 stories, one that his fathers name was David and the other that his father's name was Henry Seth and that he died about the time that Seth Henry was born(supposedly in the war) Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is a book titled: The History of the New California and it's People. In this book is a few pages on Thomas Bair. According to this book, Thomas was the son of Hugh Bair and Margaret McChristian Bair. Thomas was born in Madison County Arkansas in 1844. Hugh was born in Ohio, and Margaret in Tennessee. I noticed on the census for Hugh and Margaret that there is no Thomas listed. Possibly Thomas is a middle name. This book states that both Hugh and Margaret died in Thomas's boyhood and that Thomas went to California with his Uncle, Hill Carter Doherty (Daugherty) around 1855, which would explain why Hugh and Margaret cannot be found in any census record after the Madison County census. Hughs wife Margaret is the sister of my 4th Great Grandfather Robert Monroe McChristian. Since this book states that Hill Carter was an uncle to Thomas, that means that Margaret and Hill's wife, Catherine Tennant McCuistion were sisters. In California, there is information of dealings with the Indians, but they were not Cherokee, they were Wiyot Indians. I would like to correspond with anyone who might have more information on Hughs wife.

There is also information that Thomas Bair. son of Hugh, owned land in Humboldt County, California. The Wiyot Indians lived on this land. On February 27, 1952, Thomas Bair the third, granted to the County of Humboldt, the land known as Mad River County Park. The Bair family asked that the name be changed to Bair Beach. The Wiyot Indians did not want that name changed because they felt it would be insensitive to the Wiyot tribe.
