Barnett Relatives in Jamaica

Looking for Relatives of my father Thomas Alexander Barnett d.o.b 5.4.1923 (now deceased) who was born in Browns Mountain, Waldensia District in Trelawny Jamaica. His father's name was William Alexander Barnett and he was a police officer who I believe was based at Barnett Street Police station in Montegobay Jamaica, and his mother's name was Mary Smart.

Thomas had a daughter in Jamaica called Paulette Angela d.o.b 15.4.1955 Barnett born at Kingston Public Hospital. She lived at Unity Lane, Whitfield Town Kingston Jamaica with her mother Beatrice Powell and another sibling who is not related to me. The family eventually returned to St Elizabeth in Jamaica where her mother was originally from however, there are no further details of their whereabouts.

My father had 2 other paternal siblings. A brother called Ralston Barnett and a sister called I believe Joyce Barnett.

If you have any information about any of these relatives or their family members, please do not hesitate to make contact with me.

Re: barnett, Samuel and Mary Patterson Barnett

Hello,

It sounds as though we share Thomas Barnett (c1779-1852) as an ancestor. Tennessee marriage records show that Thomas and Penelope Ogilvie were married in Williamson, TN, on 14 Jun 1815 and their oldest child Juliett Barnett (1816-1896) was born the next year in Tennessee. Thomas Barnett made a purchase of public land near Hamel, Madison County, IL, in 1817. Thomas and Penelope had 8 additional children, including Alfred Patterson Barnett and Thomas Jefferson Barnett, all born in Madison County, IL.

Thomas, Penelope, and many of their children lived their lives in Madison County, IL, either in Hamel or nearby Edwardsville. Thomas may be buried in Quercus Grove Cemetery near Hamel (http://goo.gl/ggivB). There is a grave for a Thomas Burnett with DOD 11 Apr 1857. A transcription of information from the gravesite says, "Sons of F and Sarah Barnett."

His daughters Nancy and Sarah and sons Kimbrough Tinsley and Thomas Jefferson are buried there also, along with some grandchildren.

Thomas's daughter Juliett (1816-1896) married William Hamilton High (1815-1870) of Montgomery County, IL. The two of them moved to Elwood, Doniphan County, KS, around 1857, not far from St. Joseph's, MO. Among their children was my great-grandmother Julia High (1853-1937) who married James F. Vigus (1841-1927). One of their daughters was Loto Vigus (1885-1966), my grandmother, who grew up in Elwood, KS, and moved to Chicago after marrying F. Lee Farmer.

I've found nothing but rumor regarding Thomas Barnett's parentage. There are unsubstantiated suggestions of "Samuel Barnett" and "Mary Patterson." Gibson, TN, pops up as a possible birthplace in some accounts, but with no documentation. Other accounts point to Caswell County, NC.

"Patterson" seems a reasonable guess for his wife's maiden name, since it is used as Alfred's middle name, but nothing has come up when using this as a lead.

The most reasonable places to look for Thomas's origins is to follow the Ogilvies, which brings us to central Tennessee (Williamson County/College Grove and adjacent Bedford County, TN) and to Granville County, NC, where Penelope and her father Kimbrough Tinsley Ogilvie were born. The Ogilvies moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. This was probably in 1796, since Penelope's sister Nancy is recorded as born in 1796 in Granville County, NC, but her brother Lemuel Harris was born in Williamson County, TN, in 1797.

(Penelope's father Kimsbrough Tinsley Ogilvie appears to have lived in Bedford County, TN, as of 1830 and then moved to Calloway County, KY, where he died in 1842. There's more on K.T. Ogilvie at http://goo.gl/bRfEL.)

US Census data from 1850 says Thomas Ogilvie was born around 1779 in North Carolina. This means he would have been in his late 30s when he married Penelope. Possibly he knew the Ogilvies when they were in Granville County, NC, and met up with them in Tennessee some years later?

I've found nothing but dead ends looking for Thomas Barnett in North Carolina or Virginia. There are some Thomas Barnetts in North Carolina and Virginia, but none that headed to Tennessee and Illinois.

I'll let you know if I come up with anything in Tennessee.

Pete Farmer
My tree: Farmer/Blanke/Van Meurs/Hulme
Sir, My Barnett family (Ihave been told) were in the Carolina's. We found our gg grandfather in Louisiana but nothing before and not much after. The census shows him and wife with three children in 1850. The census showed him from Tennessee. We went to Louisiana and found a bit more about them, but as luck would have it he just wasn't there after about 1852. His wife remarried in 1856 and moved to Texas with their children that was now 4 children. His name was William C Barnet/Barnett and that brick wall just will not come down for me to find him and his parents or what happned to him. There is a second William C Barnett in Louisiana that got killed working on a farm but not the correct age or correct wife. I would very much like to see your tree. I no longer have ancestry/ Thanks for sharing. Vera Barnett Weston ladyvw@sbcglobal.net

How awesome is this. We have tried to locate where some of t Meredeth's & Susan's children went. We kne John and Hattie had a sone- Wade Hampton Barnett- died very young and is buried in Springwood Cemetery- Downtown Greenville. Now- you have to have $$$$$ and position to be buried there. His tombstone shows up on the search under Springwood Ceetery search It was broken at one time but has been repaired. Where are John and Hattie buried.
We do not know how Merideth died - that is was has drove us crazy. We just found out last Saturday the area where they were in 1870. I spent most of the afternoon yesterday in Conestee looking for info. The old cemetery tere is grown up- not taken care of and so many of the graves just have a rock. It was started in 1822. I am trying to find out who owns the property. I will try to go to the court house in Greenville this week and get them to search the deeds for me.
Have you been o Ancestry and looked up the Family Tree for Benjamin Franklin Barnett. It has pictures on family and graves we have found. Look under my tree. Nancy Barnett.
my direct email is barniephs65@charter.net or call me at 864-855-2506. I am thrilled. Maybe someone above is guiding us all in the direction of finding the family.

Oh! Thank you so much! I live in Chapel Hill, NC but my father, James Thomas Barnett, was born and grew up in the country near Lyman and Greer, S.C. His father (my grandfather, was John H. Barnett(picture taken in 1944 attached) who married Cora Clement. My grandfather's father, ie. my great grandfather was John J. Barnett who Married Harriet ("Hattie") McMakin, and his father, my great great grandfather apparently is also YOUR great great grandfather, Merida/Marideth Barnett who married Susan. Do you know how M. Barnett died? I am thrilled to find this connection and will be happy to share pictures, information, etc. as I proceed to search this line of the family. My email address is: roglesbe@med.unc.edu if you would like to email me directly. Thank you again!
James Barnett's father is Merida ? Merideth Barnett.
He was my GRGRGRandfather andwe just found out last week- we think he is buried in Conestee, SC. look at the 1870 Census of Greenville- Gantt Township. We found out from he library that part of Gantt was in Conestee, SC. He was working in the Reedy River Factory as a shoemaker. Susan was at home and some of their children also worked in the mill there. When my GreatGrandfather- Benjamin was 4 and at home. Susan is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont and one daughter- Nancy is buried right behind her. When they are lsited on the 1880 census in Greenville. Merida was already dead. Smeone has posted on the Ancestry he died about 1873. We foundan old Conestee Community Cemetery in Conestee. Old, old graves there. Only rocks as markers. We are going to the library tomorrow to see if we can find any records on it and also who owns the property.
In case you do not know. James is buried in Pelzer.
We also have alot of info on Susan Godfrey Barnett-
Look at Benjamin Franklin Barnett -Born 1867 and look at all family. We have several pictures of all the graves posted. I live in Easley, SC-

I have a record copy of a record of a family Bible that show a Nary Barnett born to David and Judith Barnett June 17 1788. She was born near the North Fork of the Saline River, where her father had worked at the salt lick nine. This is from the Local Book of Gallatin county cemetaries. This lines up with the dates for Judidth and child Mary who is the sister of Zadock. I have an old letter from a relative 35 years ago that says the family was in Summer co. but moved back and forth between Ill and Tenn. Hence Mary being born in Ill. and Zadock in Tenn.

Hello. I am related to Zadock Barnett born 1809 Summer Co. Tenn. He married Melinda Choate and lived in Gallatin Co. Ill. My great grandfather John C. Barnett is from that line. Zadock was married to Malinda Choate 29 April 1827 amd Agnes Reynolds Dec 23,852. I know that David Barnett was the father of Zadok. David was married to Judith Woodson. I have had trouble finding the parents of David until I came across James Barnett 1735 and Anne Rachel Clements 1745 in Virginia. Now looking at that line. I think we are working on the same line.

I hope this post still finds you. I don't know of a book that John J. Barnett published, if there is one I'd love to buy it too.

However : ) I do have three booklets written by John J. Barnett that were given to my grandmother (whose mother-in-law was a Barnett) and she in turn gave them to me.

I have scanned them and converted them to pdf and you can download them from my website at this page:
http://katscelticroots.com/records.htm

Hi Nadya!

I JUST found this post.....very interesting!! I have always thought that all three men (Nathan, Nathaniel, and William) were related. In the 1850 US Census for District 62, Morgan, GA, it has my relatives Jesse and Harriett Paulett and family listed as well as Griffin and Brawner names listed as well.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

I have a cousin, A Barnett descendant, who found a very reliable match to the Nathaniel Barnett/Susannah Crawford line. (17 markers, if I am not mistaken), so I think it bears investigation!

Thanks for writing and my deepest apologies for taking so long to read this!

Cheers,

Kim Stephens

I'm trying to find the parents of Juliet/Julia Barnett, who Illinois records show as having married William Hamilton High in Madison County, IL, on 12 Apr 1838. Census and marriage records list her as being born in Tennessee. William Hamilton High lived in Montgomery County, IL, at the time of their marriage in 1838. From at least 1860 until her death she and her husband lived in Ellwood, Doniphan County, Kansas.

They were the parents of Emily, William, Charles, and Julia High.

Christian Long Barnett married my great-great grandfather, John Drum, of Punxsutawney, after David Barnett died. Oddly, we can find no information about when John Drum died and where he was buried. Christian Barnett's death in 1895 is well noted. The Drum family was fairly large and well-established, so the demise of Mrs. Barnett-Drum's second husband is puzzling.

Another strange element turning up in my research of the Drum-Evans families is that Martha Evans, John Drum's granddaughter, married Reuben C. Winslow, whose mother was named Christiana Long Winslow. I found this an odd co-incidence. The women's names are uncannily similar. I'm not sure this reply helps you, but rest assured another person is working on this family mystery.

Thomas Robinson Barnett: Virginia>SC>GA>FLA

The earliest Barnett I have connected to is Thomas Robinson Barnett. From census data, I know he was born around 1795 in Virginia. He had at least one brother and sister. I know from census data and her obit sisters name was Mary and she was significantly older than him. His son Robert Howren Barnett published an article that said the older brother brought him, as an orphan, to Marlboro SC and bound him to a Taylor for apprenticeship. He married Clarissa Townsend there and had children. He moved further south and became a Methodist circuit minister in the Florida Conference, stationed in GA and FLA. The family story is the Barnetts were French Huguenots. I am exploring if he could descend from John Barnet in Maniken Huguenot settlement near Richmond Virginia.

Thanks, I have since connected Vedeau/Videau with John and Ann Bochet Barnett. Still haven't been able to fill a lot of the family out yet. Just a couple of teasing clues that some of them may have moved into the upper part of SC, but nothing concrete. One theory is that the group I am looking at descends from a John and Ann Barnett, unfortunatly I have about 10 couples by that name in the same time period in about the same region. If you run up on anything else please let me know. Thanks.
I believe Vedeau Barnett and brother Francis Marion are the sons of John Barnett and Ann Bochet of Charleston, not sure if they are the same ones you are researching. Marion is a common name in South Carolina because of the famous Revolutionary war hero Marion. My ancestor Thomas Robinson Barnett has been said to be descended from this family, although I have yet to prove or disprove it.

I am looking for information on Vedeau Barnett who died in SC about 1815. The only reference I can find to him is what is apparently a lawsuit over his will. The executors of the will are Marion Barnett and William Cleiland who are probably his son and son-in-law. I found one family tree with William married to an Ann Barnett and a reference to a Ann Catherine Cleiland as the executor of Willliam Cleiland's will. Robert A. Darby is apparently contesting the will. I assume him to be another son-in-law. I would like to know if this group is associated with the Barnett's of Union County, SC as Marion is a name found often in that group.
