I am just beginning work on the family of John Alwyn Barr, who was born in Sidcup (London), England - in January 1900. He immigrated to Detroit where he worked as a automotive engineer. He married a woman, Phyllis Prince from Toronto, Ontario so wonder if he may be related to this Barr family? My e-mail is janetmarrs@hotmail.com

I have lots of information on James Barr married to Rachel Barr. I just went looking for the grave site in Back Creek and went to the library in the county. Never found the grave, but the library has a ton of information. I also have a copy of the letter James wrote to the army asking for his 1000 acres of land for serving in the Revolutionary War. Peters wife is Elizabeth and she remarried after Peter died to a Henry Printz on March 22 1815. The county court house the bricks were made and still used by Hugh Barr his brother. I think I have also found Peters Dad, but not sure of it yet.

I have some of this and a bit more. I know that Bob was a bit of a scoundral. He was in debtor's prison for a bit. He shot himself in the foot to avoid the Civil War. I am guessing that he was considered rather low bred from the prespective of the Barr's. They were on the higher end of the socioeconomic rail. In my photo he has a long beard. I will gather my info in a more formal format and get it to you. Is there an e-mail I can contact you at mine is melis@arn.net. Mel.

My greatgrandmother was Emma Lavinia Owens Griswold. She was the daughter of Robert Eugene or R.(middle name in question) Owens and Anne Barr. I have no further information on Robert and believe Anne to be Mary Barr, daughter of Issac and Elizabeth Barr. Walter Owens was to my knowledge Emmas brother while the other siblings were half brothers. I was told that the unmarked grave lying near Walters Owens at Richland was of Robert Owens' grave. Walter used to paint the name on it. When I was there two or three years ago the name was no longer on it. I remember as a child going to meet Molly Dansby, his daughter. She had an old wooden flour dish that had belonged to her grandmother or greatgrandmother. I have court records giving guardingship of Emma, Walter, Ida A, and Mary E. Eddy to RR Owens which has caused me some confusion. I also have a will connecting RR Owens & wife Mary T Owens to Isaac & Elizabeth Barr in 1887. I have pics of Walter, Robert, and possibly George the half brother. I would love some help on this. Let me know if we are talking about the same people.
I am doing genealogy on this family for the young 16 year old lady next door who is a descendant of Philip Barr. Her last name is Funk and Philip Barr's grandaughter, Elizabeth Barr, married Joseph Funk. The young lady has a paper to write for her advanced history class and she has chosen to write about some of her relatives. I am pleased that she is so excited about her family's history. So many young people now are not.

I am researching Philip Barr and I would be interested in having his obituary and estate sale information. I have his revolutionary war info. I would also be interested in anything you might have on his wife, Mary Bond, and his parents. Thank you so much.

John Guy Barr, b. 1825 VA, Barbour Co., Pike Co., AL

Hi Barr Cousins,

It's been a long time since I posted so I thought I would renew my search for this branch of my family.

I'm looking for John Guy Barr b. probably in VA in 1825. He may have gone by the name Guy Barr.

He married Ellender Francina Silas on Dec. 12, 1857. She was found on the census in the family of George W. Hollingsworth. Her possibly adoptive or step brother James Hollis Hollingsworth, Sr. was born in NC but died in Mt. Andrew, Barbour Co., Sep 18, 1900 indicating that her family at least lived there for a time. Francina Silas was b. Feb. 3, 1838 in Barbour County. On the 1900 Census her DOB is Nov. 1837. I would love to unravel that mystery as well!

John was 5'5", dark complected with auburn hair and grey eyes (per Civil War documents). In 1850 and 1860 he was listed on the census in Barbour, Co.

The Children of John Guy and Ellen Francina Barr were (as far as we know, w/some census mistakes):

James F. Barr b. ~1854 in Mt. Andrew, Barbour Co., AL

Georgia A.B. Barr M b. ~1859 " " " " " (One of these 2 is a transcription error)

Georgia A. D. Barr F b. ~1859 " " " " "

Alonzo (Trans. error: Alonza) B. Barr M. b. 1861 " " " " " d. Apr 14, 1943 Barbour, AL

Edward D. Barr b. 1863 " " " " "

Luther O. Barr b. Oct. 1864 " " " " " d. 1929 Barbour, AL

Lula Jane Barr b. 1867 " " " " " d. Jan 1958 Jacksonville, Duval, FL

Anna Josephine Barr b. 1869 " " " " "

Notes: Civil War records state that he was enlisted as John G. Barr, Pvt. Co. H 61st Reg't, AL. He enlisted July 25th 1863 in Tuskeegee and was last paid from that Reg't on Oct. 31, 1863.

He was admitted to General Hospital # 9 in Richmond, VA on Apr 16 1864 then Chimborazo Hospital #2 Richmond, VA On Apr. 17, 1864, transferred to Farmville, VA. Disease listed was dyspepsia.

He apparently stayed on at the hospital as he was listed afterward on "list of white attendants on duty in second division." His name also appears on a receipt roll for "clothing" on May 10, 1864 He must have returned from Farmville at some point.

On Apr. 3, 1865 Richmond fell and he was captured, again a patient in the hospital and still suffering from "dyspepsia," probably ulcers due to the chronic nature of the illness. He was turned over to the Provost Marshall Apr. 19, 1865 at Libby Prison in Richmond then transferred on Apr. 23 to Newport News, VA. He was released at Newport News on June 14, 1865 and made his way home.

John Guy Barr died in 1868, after Anna was conceived. The only J.G. Barr I could find is buried in Pike Co., in the Richland Baptist Church Cemetery. The dates partially match, DOB on the gravestone is May 12, 1813, but the death date is right on (Oct. 16, 1868). A relative by marriage, Nancy (an aunt?) lived in Pike, so there's a firm connection with that area.

Ellender (Ellen) is found next 0n the 1870 census living in Monticello, Pike, AL with Nancy Barr (unk relative by marriage I think) b. in VA. making the VA to AL connection, Alonzo, Eddie, Luther, Lula, and (Anna) Josephine (age 2), as well as another boy, Thomas Barr (age 16), perhaps Nancy's son.

She is next found in 1880 living as a widow, her name on the census F. Ellender Barr, in Barbour Co., AL. with Alonzo, Edward, Luther, Lula, and Anna (Josephine).

In 1900 she is listed as Ellendor, head of household, in Barbour, Co living with 35 yr old son Luther. The census states that she had 7 children, 5 living. Luther is listed as a "merchant." She owns the home, a farm and Luther rents from her.

As I write, I'm discovering even more . . . In 1910 she is called Ellenda Barr on the census, visiting the J.H. Hollingworth family in Mt. Andrew. At 72 perhaps she was in ill health. J. H. Hollingworth's mother Amanda, age 69 is also there. George W. Hollingsworth (sic) had a daughter named Abbie! (Remembering that she was raised by a Holling(s)worth family.

So, does anyone recognize this fellow and his family? Do we know of any Silas families in Barbour Co.? I'm as interested in her as I am him! It would be great to trace both families!

Thanks!!
Tracey Miller Edwards

Maurice, My GGGrandfather was Umphry Griffin Barr. I have a little information of Mary Ellen and Francis Isabella:

Mary Ellen: b 1855, Choctaw, AL
m William B Cleveland on 6/1/1874
d 1930, Choctaw, AL

Francis Isabel: b 1857, Chactaw, AL
m John A Alderman on 1/6/1879 in Leake, MS
d 1932

Hope this is useful.

I have traced lineage back through Issac Barr 1802 to William Barr 1754. At this point things get a little confusing, some list William's father as John Barr born 1730 in Nansemond, VA while others list William's father as William Barr born 1700 in Ireland. Haven't been able to verify either. Do you have any insight?

Regards,
Tom

I have seen the few pictures posted with the original request and know that some of those pictures are of my family -- probably from the "other" side of the Barr family. Clarissa Ethel Barr (know to me as Aunt Toot) married her cousin, Fredrick Barr. She had one son, Dale Mervin Barr who died in Los Angeles in 1972.

There are pictures with photographer in Kewanee, Illinois.
This is my third post regarding the pictures:
I indicated that i did not know the identity of the three people to the left of the tall man in the back row in the family photo. As i look at the picture again, i believe that the young woman standing to Lester "Pat" Barr is his daughter-in-law, Ruth Thatcher Barr, maried to Harry Gardner Barr.
I am convinced that all of these photos belonged to Aunt Ethel. And, i would appreciate getting "the box" or copies of its content.
Louise Calaway

He had no children.
The Kewanee connection was through Ethel's mother, Sarah Amelia Whiffen Barr. Sarah was born in Kewanee.
Ethel lived in South Dakota with her husband John Fredrick Barr.
Again -- these pictures probably all belonged to my Aunt Ethel who lived in a nursing home in Downers Grove before she died.
Louise Calaway

The pictures are of my family, most of them being the children and grandchildren of James Moses and Amelia Whiffen Barr -- at least the large family photo. I recognize most of the people in the picture.

Starting at the bottom row left:
small child is Jack Moore -- he is sitting on his mother's lap. Her name is Edith Harris Moore.
Then, continuing on in that row:
Roy Moore (son of Charles Warren Moore & Elizabeth "Nell" Barr Moore, Edith Geraldine Young (daughter of Emma Edna Barr & Jerry W Young), Harry Gardner Barr (son of Bertha & Lester Barr), Jerry W Young.
In the back row from left to right:
I do not recognize the three people left of the tall man.
The tall man is Lester "Pat" Barr who is standing next to his wife Bertha White Barr.
To Bertha's right is Elizabeth "Nell" Barr Moore, Emma Edna Barr Young, Ethel "Toot" Barr. Ethel Barr, maiden name Barr, was married to a Barr.
This family lived at 76 Grove St, Downers Grove, Illinois. I visited that home many many times and understand it has been torn down. Edith Geraldine Young is my mother.
I live in California now and would appreciate the pictures. To my knowledge, none of the Barr family lives in Downers Grove presently. The only possibility would be Jack Moore and his descendants.

My mother looks to be about 4 years of age, so that puts the photo at around 1923.

Louise Calaway

Abbe. While I don't think the pictures are my family but two of the people look so much like my grandfather and an aunt. Are you still in the Donners Grove area? If so would it be possible for me to bring my camera and copy the photos? The names listed in one of the posts sounds like a Barr family in my area. I have not yet tied theirs and mine togeather but may be of some help. Also a lot of the names are in my family. I live in Odin, Il.

Sorry it has been several years since I last contacted you. I don't know if you may still be in possession of the old Barr photos. My Aunt Francis Opal said that they had an Aunt by the name of Ethel. If you still have these photos, please contact me! She said she would be able to reunite them with the proper families. I appreciate your post and may you sprout leaves in abundance on all of the branches of your tree!
