I am from the North of England. My mothers maiden name was Barras from my great grand fathers side. I understand there is a small hamlet called Barras in the North England, the name may have Saxon origins, there is a family story that we were related to the Barras family that had a bottle factory in Newcastle upon Tyne in North England at a place now called Barras Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne

Did you ever find out more about your Robert Barrass? My husband's family has a Robert Barrass, born in Newcastle on Tyne 1811, parents William and Elizabeth Noble. He married a Mary Jane Wade also! Mary Jane died in 1868 in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. I have 3 children: Margaret (1837), Mary Jane (1841) and Joseph (1844). Margaret married Moses Ferris and Mary Jane married Moses' brother Thomas. They all went to Scotland and emigrated to Lowell, MA in about 1879. Robert Barris is living with Margaret and Moses Ferris in the 1880 Lowell, MA census. He married a third time in Scotland and that document gives the names of his parents. Just this week I received a copy of an old photo labeled Alden & Nellie Barris. Any connection to your family?

Hi Sharon

I am F-in-L to Aileen Allen (Mahan) who I believe you've emailed a while ago regarding the Barras line. Found this post "(My grandmother's name was Theresa Barras and she was from Pennsylvania. She died in the Philadelphia area. . Her father's name was Abram and my father's cousins have tons of information on the family. I just haven't gotten it yet. If anything sounds familiar, please let me know!)"

Was wondering if you ever got that 'tons of information'from any of your fathers' cousins? and would be wiling to share so that we could update our Barras tree?

Thanks
Harvey Allen

Will share what I've found that you may need as well...

I don't know if the dates match up, but if it is him, it shows that he was NOT born overseas, and maybe the T. Barras could have been who your grandmother was named after? Not sure if it's them, but I thought I'd pass it on.

That's so great! My mother remembers hearing about your mom, they called her "Aunt Tessie" (spelling?), and apparently my Aunt Joan had gotten together with one of Aunt Tessie's grandchildren recently to talk about family information, but my mother can't remember who it was. Do you know if any of your immediate cousins met with her and another cousin, Eleanor, in the last couple years (Donna, maybe)? My mom, Kathleen said she thought Aunt Tessie had 3 sons, but that they lost touch with them when my grandmother died back in the early '80s. My mother was SO excited about the possibility of seeing pictures of Margaret Frahan in particular, because my mother was born so much later than the other kids, she never really knew her grandparents. She only has a handful of family photos, mostly of her mother and father when they were older (they were in their 40s when she was born). If you happen to have any pictures on your computer of them, I would greatly appreciate if you could e-mail me some. Let me know, and I can private message you my e-mail address!
I would love to hear any other information, if you have any. I've heard that Margaret Frahan was Irish, but I don't know if she was born here or there, and from what area. And, if Abram was fully French, or half something else (on his mother's side?).... I'm pretty sure ALL of my relatives on my mother's side are very recent immigrants, but I don't know for sure what generations, and from where. Any info would be great! Thanks!

As an aside, information that I received as a child growing up was that we were descendants of Paul Francois Jean Nicolas vicomte de Barras, a lover once of Josephine de Beauharnais and responsible for Josephine's introduction to Napoleon. In fact, Paul served as their best man at their wedding.

Lucy, I suppose this makes us "related" - I actually knew some of the children you've listed. I met Henry (Harry) when I was very young. Margaret (we called her Aunt Marge) lived on Fifth Street in Philadelphia. Theresa was my grandmother and the sister of your Anna - she married Charles Farrell, my grandfather. I have pictures of a few of them, including Margaret Frahan, I believe.

I'll look up whatever other information I might have and pass it on to you. I think I may have birth/death certificates available.

Anna Mary Barras Golden was my grandmother's name, she was born in 1907 as one of the youngest of 8 living children, and her mother's name was Margaret Frahan. Some of the eight children's names were Margaret, Frances, and Henry (Harry), I believe. I do not know much more than that, except that their last name, Barras, was supposedly DeBarras before immigrating into the US, and they are supposedly from Alces-Lorraine, the French side.

I have managed to do reasonably well researching my Barrass roots. I have also been looking at my Holdcroft side. Barrass was often listed and the census as Barras. Holdcroft was a challenge as it’s listed as Houldcroft, Holcroft and even Oldcroft.

My guess is these mining families of mine didn’t know how to spell their names.

I couldn't find your family at the online LDS site, but if you haven't visited it, it's a good place to see how variably BARRAS can be spelled, plus you can get a feel for where people with that surname were born and married. Go to http://familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=... and search on BARRAS in the United Kingdom. (You'll have to search on England and Scotland separately.)

I also found a BARRAS forum at http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/barras . Message 34 may be particularly helpful: http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/barras/messages/34.html . I went ahead and posted my interests at this site.

Civil registration began in England & Wales in 1837 and in Scotland in 1855. You might get lucky and find John's birth certificate, which could give you some more info.
I, as well, have a hard time locating that Barras name. We aren't REALLY sure where she's from. The elder family members always said we were of Scotch descent. But the immigration papers of the son of Elizabeth Barras & George McLean, John, said he sailed from England. It doesn't say he LIVED there...just that England is where he sailed from. We are at a loss really. We aren't even sure how her last name is correctly spelled since we only have one reference to it, from John's Death certificate. (His step-daughter is the one who gave the info for the certificate). I do not think that My Barras ever immigrated to the US but I cannot be sure. That's aboutall I know. I ahve plenty of info on the other supposed son Adam (it's almost definitely a son of the same couple)...but his papers also say he sailed from England...not that he lived there. It's confusing. Sorry I cannot be more help. Julie

In the years that I've been looking, you're my first connection to BARRAS, etc. Where did your Elizabeth come from? She would have been born about the time that my Eleanor BARRAS/BOROWS McCULLOCH's husband and children left Scotland for Michigan, USA, in 1834. (Eleanor died in 1828.) Eleanor was born in Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland, in the 1770s. Maybe too many years apart from your Elizabeth to make a connection?
I found a 1871 English census record that seems to indicate the person who would be my great-great-great grandfather, John Barras, was a sheet glass maker (from the occupation listed) in Old Swinford District 21 in 1871.

John Barras was the father of James Barras who had a son he named Oliver Robert Barris (James changed the name sometime around the time he came to the US--as I understand it). James had 12 kids: six born in England, six born on US soil (in Pennsylvania).

The location I have for James and his family of origin puts them in Sunderland, Durham, Tyne and Wear, England.

I'm new here, so I'm not sure if any of that helps at all.

I think my gr grandfather came over to Mass. in 1870 or so. I know there were/are Barrises in PA, my Dad ran into another Barris when he was in the Navy in WWII who was from PA and I ran into a David Barris from Philly in college back in '72. It seems that they clumped so to speak here in the US.

According to my husband (a Brit) it is most certainly a North Country name in England- so from Yorkshire on up to Northumberland and Cumbria.

No idea if this makes any sense, but we have a similar family legend stating that some great-great dropped the -as and changed to -is, but my group was in Pennsylvania. Half of the kids were born (as I'm told) in England and the other half where born American.

My great-grandfather was Oliver Barris, with 11 siblings.

If you have any information, let me know, maybe we could help each other out :)

Good luck!

Charlene

Barras Glassblowers

am researching a Barras family on Tyneside. I am not able to progress back beyond 1800 as I cannot find any records. Family Myths and Legends say that they are Huguenot Glassblowers. I suspect that this may be true as in the 19th century all the family are Glassblowers in Newcastle and Gateshead. Prior to 1837 it is only possible to find marriages and not births which leads me to think that they were Huguenots and that they kept their own records and only appear when they marry outside of their church.

Does anybody have any knowledge of this family or of the Huguenots on Tyneside?

My ancestor, Joseph Bowden, b. 1796, Sunderland, Durham married Jane Barras(s) in 1822 in Houghton Le Spring, Durham. Jane's parents were probably Ralph Barras(s) and Mary Whit(e)field from Northumberland (m. 1798). Jane's grandparents were probably Ralph Barras(s) and Alice Milburn from Tynemouth, Northumberland. There are many people named Barras(s) in this vicinity at this time. I will appreciate any information that anyone has. Thanks.
