Re: Finding relatives, my maiden name is Barrier

No relation. I'm transcribing a journal that a G.G. Grandfather (John Howard Redfield) took with Asa Gray in 1879 in search of Shortia (plant.) They passed through that area and had a wheel break and were looking for a black smith for repair. They found his home and shop and stumbled on a still. They passed through a farm with no buildings on it, owned by a Mr. Barrier a relative and namesake of the black smith and distiller. They did finally get the wheel fixed. This was in the Jonas' Ridge area.

I saw your query and looked through my files (my mother's family are Barrier's and have fairly complete family records going back about 10 generations..after that they need more substantiation). There are two Ernest Barriers: Ernest Finley Barrier b. Mar. 28, 1908, d. 1989 buried in old Jonas Ridge Cemetary (located in Gingercake Acres on Jonas Ridge, NC - I have a photo of this gravestone - it has a masonic symbol on it as well). Ernest married Tessie Zula Grindstaff b. 1905 in Mitchell, NC. His children were Ernest Edward, Belvis Christine, Avery Finley, Douglas, and Phyllis Jean. His parents were Eddie Barrier 1870-1937 and Millie Matilda Buchanan, parents are also buried at Gingercake, and I have a photo of the gravestone.

The other Ernest I have listed as Ernest Tilman Barrier b. approx. 1903 m. to Estalena Greybeal (b. 1909, d. May 30, 2001Carson City, NV). Their children were Phillis C. Barrier b. Mar. 2, 1942 and Glenda Loretta Barrier b.. June 24, 1944. Ernest's parents are Louis George Barrier b. July 24, 1875, d. August 27. 1950 in Jonas Ridge married Jan 6, 1897 to Mary Reid b. abt. 1879, d. Dec. 29, 1945. Ernest's siblings are: Adam Commodore b. 1900, Junie B. 1905, Elmore Columbus b. Dec. 25, 1908, Louisa Matilda b. April 12, 1910, Forrest Lee b. Jan. 14. 1913, Mary Ellen b. Mar. 30, 1915, and Edwin Milo b. Jun. 25, 1918.

Hi Audrey,
I will give you what info is in the book concerning Clarks, However I first want to tell you what info from leg work I have on the George Barrier. He was a brother to my gg grandmother Susan Adaline Barrier. If its the same one, He was born Jan 29, 1852 and died Mar 30, 1934. He married (1), Blanche Florence Carpenter Mar 31, 1878and (2) Violet Wise Oct 18, 1908. This book was written in 1974.These are different papragraghs: On the outskirts of Jonas Ridge township, some English settlers took up land in the section now called Long Ridge. Around 1860 Harvey Clark entered a tract of land there. He married a Martha Coffey and had 10 children. Dovey,Martha Ann, Douth and Enoc and others.
Next Para. Jackson Barrier had a child named Arkie who married Hickey Clark and they reared 7 children. Mammie,Homer, Ellen,Grover, nad Rosa Lee, Reubin, and Ralph. Jacksons sister Hattie Reid married Tom Clark and they had 10 children. The oldest died at birth. Willie,Newton, Fenzo, Mackie, Millie, Junie,Stevie, Mary, and Earl.
Next para. on Nov. 21, 1880 Emanual Rose married Buney Johnson, they had 9 children, Lida married Winfield Clark, Fannie married Wesley Clark and George married Oler Clark.
I am not sure if these names ring any bells but I do have the name of one of my cousins who if I am not mistaken has researched the Clarks because his grandmother was a Clark from Jonas Ridge. I will send that to you in a personal note at your e-mail address.

I have 4 George Henry Barriers, first on born 1/30/1733, the second was born in1826, the third was born on 1/29/1852,and the fourth 'cripple George' was born 3/4/1865.

This is what I know about Cripple George:
Cripple George was crippled when he was around ten years old; he walked on the side of his foot. Steers (oxen) pulled a log and jerked his foot against a tree leaving him crippled for life. He lived with his mother at what is called "Bettie's Gap." The names came about by an incident which happened while they were living there. Three men went to their home one Saturday night and threw their things out of the house; therefore, Bettie and George stayed in the barn until Monday when the law came, and put their belongings back in the house. Bettie only lived a short while after this incident. After his mother's death (Bettie Barrier), George married Bett Carpenter, They had one son, Bill. George was found dead beside the Ginger Cake Road. He had started after some wood, and got under the fence and never got up.

I have a book that is entitled The Barriers of Jonas Ridge.

Does the book you have on Jonas' Ridge mention Dolphus Clark married to Sarah Elmira Braswell? They had a daughter, Ruth Emeline in 1848 who I believe is my husband's GGgrandmother. She supposedly married Ervin Carpenter and had Betta in 1865 and Todd in 1874. Then I find Ervin alone but status says married, living with deThaddeus (know as Doctor Clark) in 1880. I have been told she married William Pritchard followed by a Rob Pritchard but I have no idea who she really married for real. Betty Jane Carpenter is my husband's great grandmother. I would really appreciate any information on that particular Clark Family. Betty Jane (Betta) married a Barrier - George Henry - in about 1900.

Caroll,
Nice to hear from you again also. The Sarah Barrier I have is the same one as mentioned in the "Jonas Ridge History Book" as living in the mud house and her son died while unattended. The only way I can confirm that info is because it mentioned her other children; the same siblings as I know belong to my great-grandmother, Cozy.
As far as I know Cozy always went by Clark and not Barrier; although Sarah Barrier & John Clark were never formally married. I honestly don't know if your mentioned Sarah is the same or not because I have no info. to connect Sarah's children to her except for the article in that history book.
In the book it mentioned the article being written by Mamie Clark Weatherman (s/o Joe); this "Joe" , I think, is the same as the brother to my Cozy.
Any way you could help would be greatly appreciated. I am ordering the history book next week. I live several states away and am unable to do any "hands-on" research myself.
Thanks again,
Carla

I show no children born of this union. His dates were June 31, 1899/ Dec 10,1975. Let me know if any of this info is correct for you. Caroll

Carla, It was good to hear from you. The Sarah I have is a complicated story according to the Burke County, NC records. Sarah Adelina Barrier Born 1849, Died Feb 10, 1914. Her mothers name was Nancy Born 1822 in Jonas Ridge to Henry Jackson Barrier and Mary Ann Keller. However, Nancy never married but I am showing Sarah's fathers name was Jack --------.In the 1900 Census of Burke County, it shows a Sarah as a palper in the county home. In my research, I find nothing where Sarah ever married. Was unable to get a birth cert on either one of these. I hope this helps. Not even sure if it is the right one. Thanks Caroll

Dee -
I am so excited! I met Aunt Zona probably when I was about 7 when we moved across country from California to Virginia. My email address is: targetmarket@erols.com and I will check in with it all weekend so we can exchange information.

My fathers( Luther Barrier) sister was named Carrie Barrier. I know she died young.

Her mother was named Canzada Vaughn Barrier. This is awful, but I can't remember her father's name. Her parents were old when I was born.

hufferkt@bellsouth.net
