Not sure if you are still interested but my mother was an agnew and told me when i was younger that years earlier our family had been Barrington-Agnew but had dropped the Barrington as it was the norm back then because the names had been to long for signatures. They are mostly from the west coast of the south island.

Have got the Barringtons back to 1811 but only got Rena's father so far on the Needham side as I've not done much on that part of the family. Joan does/did have a sister Celia but I don't know if she's still alive. Will have to contact David or Gill to find out. You can email me on setaylor@blueyonder.co.uk.

Sue

Does Joan have sister Ceilia and her husband is Jeff Brown and son Christopher?

The following children of Arthur and Rena Barrington moved to Canada (Edith May, Marjorie, Beatrice, Mary, Minnie and Dorothy).

Have you been able to research the Barrington or Needham family any further?

My father recently passed away and it has been comforting for my mom and myself trying to research the family but I am finding it difficult. Any information you could share would be so appreciated.

My Uncle Jim Harrison was a musician (trumpet mainly) though I'm sure he probably played the piano as well, and played in all the big bands. As far as I know they never owned or ran a hotel. They retired to Jersey and Joan lived there till late last year. David lives in the USA, his sister Gillian lives in Australia and his other sister, Janet lives in the Isle of Wight where Joan now lives.

I just spoke to my mom and she mentioned that once when she and my grandmother were on their way to Southampton they were met by Joan's son David at the train station then he took them to see Joan - this was around 1951.

My mom also mentioned that my grandmother used to write to Barbara in Australia (Rene's younger sister Marjorie's daughter).

Was Joan's husband named Jim Harrison?

My mom has a vague memory of my grandmother mentioning Jim could really play the piano and Rene was a great ballroom dancer (foxtrot). Also did Joan and Jim used to own or run a hotel?

By the way my mom is the youngest grandchild of Arthur and Rena Barrington.

Nice talking with you.

My grandmother Minnie was Arthur and Rena's 2nd youngest child.

Rene and George lived in Australia - didn't they? My grandmother used to write to their family and send photos. I remember my grandmother talking about Joan. Joan will be my mom's first cousin, I wonder if she remembers my grandmother Minnie and my mom (Carol)!

I grew up knowing Arthur and Rena's other children Dorothy (youngest) and Beatrice.

All the best - please keep in touch.
My aunt by marriage is the granddaughter of Arthur and Rene. Her mother was Rene Barrington and she married George Washington Butler. Auntie Joan is now 91. If your grandmother was Arthur and Rene's daughter then your mother or father would be her cousin, I think.

I reviewed the book based on my reading of it at Belfast City Library (N.Ireland) - I don't actually have a copy of it. There are copies in Trinity College (Dublin) Library, The British Library (London) and probably other large libraries. I tried looking for it in the Internet Archive library of ebooks, Google Books, etc. but couldn't find it.

My eldely friend who died recently had asked me to investigate her father, Cecil Barrington-Clark, who on his first mage cert said he was the son of Sir Andrew Clark. MD Clark was physician to Mr Gladstone who later ennobled him. I think that Cecil had a chip on his shoulder all his life about his parentage.

From notes left by my friend's mother Cecil was born c. 1876 either in Ireland or Montreal and I have worked on the basis that his mother was a Miss or Mrs Barrington who had an illegitimate child by Sir Andrew, maybe being sent away to Canada for a spell.

I suspect that the couple covered their tracks very well but I do wonder if there might be any clues in the book you have. Anything will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

LOUISA & mother HANNAH BAR or BERRINGTON?-Scotland 1871??

Does anyone have any info on a Miss Louisa Berrington (or later spelled BARrington)who married a Mr.John Wesley KING in SCOTLAND---and in 1871 SCOTTISH CENSUS shows as their
household....

Household
Name Relation Gender Age Birth Place

John Wesley King Head M 28 Lancashire
Louisa King Wife F 27 Shropshire ....nee Ber/Barrington
Annie Ethell King Daughter F 1 Lancashire
Lizzie King Daughter F 0 Lancashire
Hannah Berrington Mother-In-Law F 48 Shropshire
(Hannah, Louisa's mother may ALSO have spelled her surname
in later or earlier times as BARRINGTON--as spelling was NOT FIXED until early 1900s w/structured schooling for everyone!!)

MY QUESTION IS......Does anyone know iF Louisa DIED after this census? (either of say, childbirth or of a disease), because i am TRYING to establish

IF her husband---Mr.John Wesley KING later re-married to a wife named
CAROLINE ....and had then a son named EDWIN HENRY KING born circa
1878.....or if THIS LOUISA IS REALLY a CAROLINE LOUISA KING....OR LOUISA
CAROLINE KING.....and IS actually the mother of Edwin Henry KIng.

Reason for this is......that this is the ONLY .....John WESLEY King i have EVER
found IN SCOTLAND. The other 3 john WESLEY King's all come up in England
and have been PROVEN Not to be the PERSON I SEEK---ie- the FATHER of
my EDWIN HENRY KING---who's MOTHER i KNOW to be a CAROLINE nee
MCKAY King.

So ONLY way LOUISA might be Edwin's mom--is if say she was married b4
and was a MCKAY when she married THIS John Wesley King---NOT LIKELY--as her maiden name was BERRINGTON and Edwin himself listed on his marriage license that his mom's maiden name was MCKAY. So OTHER option is IF THIS LOUISA passed-away sometime AFTER THIS CENSUS? -and Mr. KING re-Married to a Miss Caroline McKAY??? DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS???

thanks so much!
George Arthur Furne Barrington

My Great Grandfather is known as: George ARthur Furne of Arion, Iowa, it has been written by his daughter and verbally told to his sons that HE is not really a Furne after all and that (as the story goes he thought he was going to die) and he advised his family of 13 children that he really was a Barrington born in Augusta, Maine but living in Nova Scotia Canada. Any one that is a descendant of this family line (in the Furnes) that is a male descendant (meaning your father was a Furne and your grandfather or Great Grandfather was George A Furne ) is in a unique position to help the Furne family truly discover their roots with a DNA test which will prove our genetic line through George Arthur. Please contact me through Ancestry or email: Family Tree: Blood Brothers or emmysoo03@yahoo.com

Amy Moore (my Momma is a Furne)

I have nothing else to go on at this time. Born in 1745 and was in the city of Albany, Albany County, New York at the time of the Revolutionary War in 1776, etc. I suspect his family came to New York in the late 1600s. Just a hunch.

Hello, again Debra -

Your message prompted me to update my Elizabeth Barrington Dillon and family information on my Ancestry.com Public Member Tree. So, when you look at it, you will find more info than I said I did in my earlier message today.

Hello, Debra -

It's always nice to connect with another Barrington cousin. To see the Ancestry.com Public Member family tree I created for my Barrington Family kin, once you are logged into Ancestry.com, do a search just on Public Member Trees for Emma Maud Dillon, born in Wisconsin. I have an 1856 birth year for her.

Anyway, you will see some family trees with Emma Dillons. Mine is in the family tree: Samuel Albert Barrington Family Waupaca WI. Click on that family tree link and you can see all the info I've found so far. For Emma, I only have her name, the 1856 birth year in Wis. (which I got from another's family tree) and some info on her parents. Plus, of course the info I have on the Barrington line goes back to William and Loveda Alcock Barrington, the parents of Emma's mother, Elizabeth Barrington + a whole heap of other Barrington kin.

Elizabeth, her husband and family + her father William, were the last of the family to come from Ireland. Elizabeth's brothers/sisters were sent over in small groups earlier, to earn money and send it back for the rest to come over. A few died at sea. Her mother Loveda died in the 1840s in Ireland, probably in County Kildare.

You will see other Public Member family trees with the same Barrington kin there, too.

If you think my Emma Dillon + parents and your Emma Dillon + parents are the same, let me know. I'd love to add more info on her and correct the birth year I have.

I'm descended through one of Elizabeth Barrington Dillon's brothers, Alexander Barrington.

Also, there is a Barrington Family organization (descendants of William and Loveda Alcock Barrington from Ireland) that gathers annually in August in Waupaca, Wisconsin for a pot luck picnic. One of the kinfolk keeps up the family genealogical records. Also, there is a Yahoo Group for the clan info.

Once you let me know if you think your Emma is the same as my Emma, I'll send you a private message through Ancestry.com with the info on the family organization, our family record keeper, and the Yahoo Group.

Here's hoping we are cousins.

Relatively yours -
Jean

Hello,
WOW! This might be my relative, my ggg-gma!
According to my family records, my Emma Dillon was born in 1861 in Ireland and married Bramen Henry Wooledge (1848-1887) in Neenah, Wisconsin, in 1876 (? she would have been young). She later died in Fargo, North Dakota (1937).

How do I get to your other pages?

And thank you so much for getting back with me! :)

Regards,
Debra

Seems my Barringtons orginated in England. They may have been in Ireland at sometime before coming to this country but I am more inclined to believe they came directly from England during that era of history. They were in Albany County, New York by 1745 and a later generation eventually settled in Lafayette County, Wisconsin between 1847-1850. I don't have a connection with your Elizabeth Barrington.
Rita Kleindl

Hello -

I see that your posting is from Dec 2006.

Have you found the info you are seeking regarding Elizabeth Barrington? If not, I have an Elizabeth Barrington, b. 1826, County Kildare. She married a John Dillon (b. 17 May 1792, possibly in Athlone) 22 Jan 1850 in Ireland. They immigrated from Ireland to Wisconsin, with her widowed father, William Barrington, settling in Appleton, Outagamie County, Wis.

Let me know if you think she is the Elizabeth Barrington you are seeking. I have more family info in a public Ancestry.com family tree.

Jean D., Missouri

Barringtons - A Family History by Amy Barrington

Published Dublin (1917)
This book is what genealogists would nowadays call a "one name study" i.e. a collection of families, connected or unconnected, mainly English, with the surname Barrington. However, it also contains a valuable chapter on Irish Barringtons including a section on "The Raheenlusk Barringtons and the Ballyhegue Barringtons" both of County Wexford, the former being ancestors of this reviewer. This section has been invaluable to me as a starting point in my family history research with much data unavailable elsewhere and with many hints and clues to follow up. Wills, deeds, marriage licence bonds, correspondence and oral evidence are all used effectively to flesh out the narrative and produce pedigrees of each of the families. Giving an interest in eugenics as her motivation for writing the book my seem anachronistic to a modern reader but anyone with a Barrington from England or Ireland in their family tree who lived prior to its publication date of 1917 would do well to start with this easy to read book.
