Bartel, Adam Henry -b. 1850 Germany –m. 1875 Matilda E. Knollenberg

from a book on found on HeritageQuestOnline.com – not in my line as far as I know

Title: Indiana and Indianans: a history of aboriginal and territorial Indiana and the century of statehood
Authors: Dunn, Jacob Piatt
City of Publication: Chicago
Publisher: American Historical Society
Date: 1919
Page Count: 2610
Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index
ill., facsims., maps, ports.
Reel/Fiche Number: Genealogy and local history; LH12054)
Subject Headings: Indiana -- History
Indiana -- Biography.
Indiana

Adam Henry Bartel
One of the largest and oldest firms in the wholesale district of Eastern Indiana is the Adam H. Bartel Company, jobbers of dry goods and notions and manufacturers of workmen’s clothing. The president of this company is a veteran merchant and business man, and has been steadily associated with commercial affairs in Richmond since as a boy of fifteen he was in the employ of a local wholesale house of fifty-five years ago.

Adam H. Bartel was born near Osnabruch, Hanover, Germany, in 1850. When he was four hears old his parents came to America, settling in Richmond, where his father for a time was an employee of Gaar Scott & Company, but later bought a farm north of Richmond and for a number of years steadily pursued his interests as an agriculturist. He died in Richmond at the advanced age of almost ninety years. Mr. Bartel’s mother died in 1891, at the age of sixty-seven years.

He had to be content with a common school education and at the age of fifteen was employed as an errand boy and stock boy with the wholesale and retail notions and fancy goods firm of Emsweiler & Crocker. He was with that firm seven year, three years of the time as traveling salesman. He next accepted a position with George H. Knollenberg, retail dry goods dealer, and served there as a salesman four years.

In 1877 he associated himself with Christopher F. Schaefer to buy out the interests of his old employer, Mr. Crocker, who had succeeded to the firm of Emsweiler & Crocker, and established the firm of Bartel & Schaefer. For three years they conducted the business at old 49 Main Street, and when the partnership was dissolved Mr. Bartel moved to 210 Fort Wayne Avenue and for five years the business was conducted under his individual name at this location. He then took in John M. Coate as partner, using the firm name of Adam H. Bartel & Company, and in 1885, to accommodate the growing business the firm put u a three-story brick building at the corner of Washington and Fort Wayne avenues.

In 1892 the firm of Adam H. Bartel & Company was incorporated, and at that time the business was removed to 911-921 North E Street, where it is established today in a building 118 by 115 feet, four floors and basement. Adam H. Bartel is president, John M. Coate, vice president, Fred J. Bartel, treasurer, Ida E. Bartel, secretary and Ben C. Bartel, assistant secretary. One hundred and seventy-five people are employed in the office, warehouse and factory, and they do a jobbing business in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. While the jobbing business has always been the chief feature of the company, they have also made overalls, shirts and other workmen’s clothing since 1885.

Mr. Bartel is a director and stockholder in the Dickinson Trust Company and has other local interests, including some real estate. He is president of the board of trustees of the YMCA, a member of the First English Lutheran Church, the Commercial Club, Country Club and in politics is a republican. While a busy man, he has neglected no legitimate claim upon his time and energies in behalf of local affairs. His company is a member of the National Association of Garment Manufacturers and the National Wholesale Dry Goods Association.

In 1875, Mr. Bartel married Miss Matilda E. Knollenberg, dau. of Bernhard Knollenberg. They had seven children, four of whom are living. Bernhard C. and Frederick H. are both married; Gertrude is a graduate of Earlham College and Florence is now finishing her education at Ward-Belmont School for Girls at Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Bartel has two grandchildren.
I went to the US Copyright website and it looks like I am OK. I posted this query here hoping that if someone does still possess the copyright they will contact me. So far that hasn't happened. The original copyright expired in 1978. It could have been renewed by someone before the end of that year but I have no indication that it was.
I have no record of a BARDEL spelling in my data nor any record of the BARTEL's being in France during that time frame.

Hi there - Have you found out who has the copyright and are you able to distribute this as an electronic file? My husband is a direct descendent of them and we would certainly appreciate seeing this file. Their daughter Anna was my father-in-law's grandmother and he remembers staying at their house as a little kid.

Please let me know if you are able to distribute this file. thank you. By the way, I have appreciated the help you have given me as I've been doing this research and have come across your entries.

Helen, this is probably just a shot in the dark, but the names and dates that you listed in your BARTEL family from KS are similar to mine, so I decided to answer your query and hope.

My Adam BARTEL was b cir 1820, in either Prussia or Germany. It could have been any place as the census records state different countries of birth for Adam.

Adam and wife, Catherine LNU, had a son named Henry, b cir 1859, in Meigs co, OH. Catherine lived until 1903. She was listed in census as having arrived in the U. S. A. in 1846.

Son Henry's wife was possibly an Emma.

I lose track of all of the BARTEL children except my direct line: Catherine BARTEL, b May 1849, Meigs co, OH, who mar Peter REINHART.

My family line remained in OH. However, what happened to the other siblings, I have not been able to find out. They were: Adam, Jr., b abt 1853, OH, mar Magdalina BIDECHERE; Mary, b abt 1856, OH; Henry; Edward Andrew, b abt 1862; and, Elizabeth, who was 8 yrs in 1850C OH, but does not appear in the 1860C. There had been 9 children born to this couple, but only 5 survived.

I have not had any luck with this line. But, the names Adam and son Henry caught my attention. Sadly, they were not in KS.

Supposedly, one BARTEL child did leave the area, but I don't know which child it was. I do not know where Adam, b abt 1820, died, but it was believed that he died before 1903.

Good luck with your Adam and Henry. lnsfmly

Interesting to see someone else out there with my name! Although I doubt we are related I did find it interesting that your ancestors came from Germany as well as mine did. My Great Grandfather was named Phillip John Barthel, my father and I were also named after him. My Grandfather was named Maxamillion Barthel. I know the name Barthel was actually French and that our ancestors came from Deuseldorf Germany. My great grandfather came here and actually returned to Germany as a young man, he left his wife and two children (my grandfather) and her parents here where they settled in the city of Syracuse, New York. I have no idea of what happened to him once he returned to Germany as a young man if he survived the war of course he probably started another family there.

If you find any information where your relatives came from in Germany keep me posted.

Phillip Barthel

Barthel or Bartel Family Family History

My birth name is Barthel. I grew up hearing that my birth name was probably misspelled by immigration officials and that the correct spelling was probably Bartel or some other variant. Even knowing that information, I haven't found any new information about my family history.
Maybe someone here can help me further my research.
My father, Richard Phillip Barthel, was born in California in 1950.
My grandfather, August Phillip Barthel, was born 1922 in Los Angeles and died in 1982 in Los Angeles. He was married to Mary Melsheimer.
My great grandfather, August John Barthel, was born 1891 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin and died in 1979 here in Los Angeles. He was married to Helen Berg.
According to his death certificate, his father was Julius Barthel and his mother was Louise Harneck. Both are listed as being from Germany.
Does any of this ring a bell?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Peter,

Thanks for your response. Since posting my query in 2004, I have found out more info.

Johann (Gottlieb) KUCHEL (b. 1821, d. 1902)
m. 1848 Maria Elizabeth BARTEL (b. 1826, d. 1884)

They had ten children:
1. Wilhelm Friedrich KUCHEL (b. 1850)
2. Johanna (Louisa) KUCHEL (b. 1851)
3. Johann (August) KUCHEL (b. 1853)
4. Anna Elizabeth KUCHEL (b. 1854)
5. Anna (Maria) KUCHEL (b. 1855)
6. Mathilda (Emma) KUCHEL (b. 1857)
7. Gottlieb (Heinrich) KUCHEL (b. 1859)
8. Johann (Hermann) KUCHEL (b. 1861)
9. Bethal Amelia KUCHEL (b. 1863)
10. Maria (Elizabeth) KUCHEL (b. 1865)

I do have Maria Elizabeth Bartel as being the third child of Johann Gottlob Bartel and Maria Elizabeth Binder - but I only have a total of six children listed. I'd be interested to compare notes further, if you're interested.
