I am not related in anyway to this family. I have come across an old abstract of title that lists this family in the 1890s. It lists family history information that may be of interest to descendants of this family. Husband's name is Otto Bartels, wife is Anna and their son's name is Ray Herman Bartels. He was born about 1890. If you are interested in the information in this document, please e-mail me.

Johann or Jean Bartels b. 1874

Does anyone have any information about a family of BARTELS ?

Johann BARTELLS b.1849 was born in Burg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, (Neider-Sachsen) Germany. He was a sailor on the german merchant ships. The family are believed to have moved to Belgium. He had a son believed to be called Jean BARTELS b.1874 in Charleroi, Belgium. Around 1878 the family moved to Wales and the family changed name. Both father and son became John BARTLEY. It is believed the family lived in Holywell, Flintshire, Wales where the father died in 1888. The son moved to Northumberland where he married.

It is desired to piece together where they lived in Germany.
When and where they lived in Belgium and Wales.

Why the name change and details of any family, that would be resident with them or elsewhere.

I can converse in german for the benefit of german members, offering information.

For belgian members, I also speak french.

Many thanks.
Hello, Hans was my Great Grand Uncle. His brother Christian Henry was my Grandpa's dad. I have a 4 page family tree attempt by one of Grandpa's cousins. It seems that most info is good and I have also included a few examples of Hans' Paintings. Hans was considered and "important" artist during the impressionist era. ( I think its impressionist.. its been years since I read the Oxford Professor's Paper about why his paintings are of importance. There were not many, but the seacapes and the "day in the life of" examples showing normal people doing their normal activities is a like a snapshot into that era. I wish I could afford one, there are a few galleries today actually with auctions online with a couple of his paintings.
By the way.. Hans used the name Hans Von Bartels. I do not know the ins and outs of the "von" part, but its a common addition. If you have any trouble viewing my photos in my tree pages let me know I can post here

I came across these a while back if you havent already found any Crest of the Bartels. I do not own these photo's and looked for any messages or claims to them and couldnt find anything, so I think they are good to go. There are a few variations of these out there. As I recall it wasn't as easy as searching and google images pops up a few of them, I scrolled long returns from my search query. I found the first one off of a webpage link somewhere months ago.

and thanks for the reply about my cousins. I have searched, and its like they fell off the face of the earth. My uncle who served over 30 years with USAF I cannot even find a grave for him, albeit he did top secret stuff, but after retirement the leads seem to go nowhere.

I made a bunch of mistakes when I first started dealing with hints etc, and I have a bunch of double entry names, I also learned if I delete it takes the ones i want to keep too. Do you know of a tool that is available that would sort of fix my tree. I am learning and have now connected to several trees but I am a little gunshy to try to fix my tree, the last time undid a ton of stuff! Oh and one more thing, is there a way to change my tree to public from a private one, or is it just a setting? I want my neices and nephews to be able to update or change anything they find wrong or want to add. I WELCOME ANY HINTS.

Loray

My cousins are your cousins as well. I am Ann Loray Bartels. The father of Janine and Desiree and Chris was Henry George Bartels. B 1918 -D 1982, My Uncle. My father John Edward "Jack" Bartels was his younger brother. Henry was known as Bartie in the family and possibly Harry. He spent over 30 years in the USAF retired as a Lt. Colonel.

I too am looking for my cousins. I also noticed that Henry Bartels retired from the USAF in 1973 and listed his home address in Washinton State, yet the Social Security death records show Wisconsin as having issued his death certificate . However, Henry was born in Sam Diego and the SSN doesnt notate this fact. Uncle Bartie's work involved Top Secret Projects and that may be why its is so difficult to find any of the family. There were 2 sisters of Henry as well Geil (Bartels) Braun and Jean Georgina "Georgie" Bartels Hodel. I have more info if you would like it. I also have a 5 page Family Tree that was done by my grandfather'z cousin. There are name errors but it has the Germany info and it also details the Gr Grand Father of Henry and his brothers, one of which is a very well known Artist, Hans Von Bartels. His paintings are considered "important" During the impressionist era.

Bartels and Snyder

My great great aunt Carrie Snyder married Herman B Bartels whom I think was born around 1870. Their son was Henry H Bartels, born around 1894 and also a son, George, born around 1900. Henry H's children were Marjorie Bartels, b. 1925; Henry B.; b. 1926 or 1927 and Ruth E Bartels, born around 1919. They lived in Queens, NY. Does anybody have any information on this family? I would love to find any living members since my family was close to the Bartels at one point, yet I don't know any of them. It would also help fill in the gap in my records. Thanks!

Hi there
I also saw your note on the next thread asking about ship records. I think I see a match for your family on the following ship:
Ship name Fides
Arrived in New Orleans Nov 20, 1854
Father Claus age (35)
Mother Margaretha age (35)
Children, Peter (11), Henry and Margaretha (twins age 7) and Claus Jr (4)
Says they were heading to Missouri so I imagine they started there before moving to Illinois.

My husbands family is also from Hannover and I found some Christening records online at Family Search.

Good luck
Lindy Bartels

I have a Veneranda Bartels b. 1838 in my tree. She was born in Malta, although, I suspect that her family wasn't from there. She met my 3rd great grandfather, Alfred Every b. 1834 in Brighton, England, while he was stationed with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean about 1855. I can't find any record of their marriage, but they had two children while they were in Malta, Anthony and Alfred Every.

After the war, Alfred brought Veneranda and the children back to England with him and had five more children (Mary Ann, John, Henry, Rosina, and one child that was stillborn, during which, Veneranda died). The first record I have seen of them in England was the 1871 census where she still lists her name as Bartels. However in 1881, she now lists her name as Every.

Re: Edward Bartels, Sweet Grass Montana married to Agnes Flynn of Adair Missouri

Dear Sean-

Although this is a year later maybe you still need an answer. I do not believe Edward and Agnes are Children of Frederick. Frederick Bartels was according to family written history a lifelong bachelor. (We are related to Frederick through his sister Johanna Bartels.) The story that was passed to me was that Frederick left Germany at 17 to go to California to look for gold but never made it that far. He wrote to his sister Johanna who was married living in Williamstown, MO and asked her to send a daughter to keep his house. She did not want to send a girl into the lonely wilderness so she sent not only her daughter Emma but her son Henry who you find on the 1920 census as well. (They also never married.) James Schrader was yet another child of his sister who it appears had just come to visit. Both he and his wife die in Missouri.
If you know anything further about the Bartels in Montana I would like to know , I have been convinced for some time there were more than just Johanna and Frederick. Coincidentally I believe that their father's name was Christian. The story goes that Johanna and Frederick's father escorted Johanna to the Missouri through New Orleans when she came from Germany. The record I have found that matches the names and dates is Christian.

Anne
