I have some clues on this Jefferson BARTLETT, and would like to learn more of him.

Old Fairfiled City Cemetery, Jefferson Co, IA grave #170 is James W BARTLETT b 9 Aug 1827; d 28 Feb 1906; Sarah J BARTLETT b 3 Feb 1848; and Hannah BARTLETT b 14 Sep 1809; d 9 Dec 1876 - I think Sarah J was 2nd wife of James; and that Hannah 1809-1876 was his mother.

1870 Warren Co, IN (Steuben Twp); Census: Jefferson BARTLETT 67 b VA; Hannah P 64 Keeping House b VA - I don't believe Hannah was the wife of Jefferson; she may have been his sister-in-law.

1850 Roanoke Co, VA Census: Hannah BARTLETT 44 b VA; James 23 b VA - this also indicates James was son of Hannah; and her husband was not with her.

Hannah BARTLETT is in 1843-1846 Floyd Co, VA Pers Prop Tax Lists; and then 1840-1850 in Roanoke Co, VA PPTL - which agrees with the 1850 census record above.

In the 1842 Floyd Co, VA PPTL there are Leroy Garner BARTLETT and Reuben BARTLETT. The BARTLETT family in Floyd Co, VA at that time descended from Garner BARTLETT b c1750 VA; Will d 1811 Montgomery Co, VA. (I believe they lived in the part of Montgomery Co, VA that became Floyd Co in 1831.) Garner BARTLETT moved from Loudoun Co, VA to Berkeley Co, VA (1786-95 PPTL) to Botetourt/Montgomery Co, VA (1798-1811 PPTL; and 1810 census).

Garner BARTLETT's eldest son was William BARTLETT b c1775-80 VA; m 27 Jan 1800 Frederick Co, VA Lydia POWELL b c1778 Berkeley Co, VA. He stayed in the Berkeley/Frederick Co, VA area after his father had moved south (Wm was in 1800-1829 PPTLs); but William & Lydia moved to Montgomery Co, VA in time to be in the 1830 census; and then in the 1831-1836 Floyd Co, VA PPTL. Lydia is in the 1837-38 Floyd Co, VA PPTL, indicating William died in 1836-37 time frame. William & Lydia were in the following census records:

1810 Berkeley Co, VA: William BARKLEY 30010-20100
1820 Frederick Co, VA: William BARLETT 211210-12010
1830 Montgomery Co, VA: William BARTLETT 1110 0001-0001 1001

Per the census records they had the following children [the ones in brackets are not "proven", but appear to be the only way to fit all the records]

1. male b 1800-04 [Reuben b c1800]
2. male b 1802-04 [Jefferson b c1803]
3. female b 1804-10 [possibly Nancy m 1825 Frederick Co, VA]
4. John William b 1807 Frederick Co, VA m 1830 Rush Co, IN Catherine "Kate" CARMICHAEL b c1808 PA
5. female b 1804-10 [in 1810,20,30 census]
6. female b 1810-15 [in 1820,30 census]
7. Leroy Garner D b 1815 Frederick Co, VA 1m 1840 Montgomery Co, VA Olive KING b 1819 VA [perhaps a full blood Chippewa]; Leroy 2m 1870s Angeline BURR; Leroy d aft 1870 in Bessler, KS
8. male b 1810-20 [in 1820 census, maybe died young]
9. Daniel Peter b 27 Jan 1822; d 27 Jul 1889 Leroy, Coffey Co, KY; m 1841 Rusha Co, IN Mahala OSBORN
10. male b 1825-20 [in 1830, 40 census]

It appears to me that some of the children of William and Lydia stayed in Frederick Co, VA in 1829, when William & Lydia moved to Montgomery Co, VA - if so, they quickly moved west, perhaps with neighbors and/or inlaws, because I can't find records of them in Frederick Co, VA. Perhaps they started moving west before 1829.

Jefferson BARTLETT b Apr 1803 VA; d 27 Dec 1873 Warren Co, IN is in the following census records:

1830 Hamilton Co, OH: Jefferson BARTLETT 10001-00002
1840 [I can't find him]
1850 Fountain Co, IN: Jefferson BARTLETT 47; etc.
1860 Warren Co, IN: Jef BARTLET 57; etc.
1870 Warren Co, IN: Jefferson BARTLETT 67; etc.

Reuben is hard to track, but I think:
1841 Union co, IN Reuben BARTLETT m 4 Dec 1841 Katherine KINGERY - if Reuben had been married to Hannah ____ and divorced her that would partly explain the Floyd Co, VA PPTL records listed above.
1850 Montgomery Co, VA census: Reuben BARTLETT 50 b VA - why would Reuben be back in VA? settle divorce?
1860 Warren Co, IN census: Reuben BARTLETT 59 b VA, Catherine 44 b OH
1870 Story Co, IA census: Reuben BARTLETT 69 b VA

From all of this circumstantial evidence, I think Reuben and Jefferson are the eldest sons of William BARTLETT.

I would love to see any additional records that could help "fill in" this puzzle - I have scoured the VA records, but haven't gotten too deep into OH, IN and IA yet - I could use some help there.

Also we have 2 matching DNA results from descendants of the ancestors of Garner BARTLETT. I would REALLY like to find a living male BARTLETT descendant from this line to participate in our DNA Project, and prove (or disprove) that this line really comes out of Loudoun Co, VA, in the early 1700s.

I hope you have some additional records to share; I would be glad to email you my Word document on this whole family line.

Jim BARTLETT jim4bartletts@verizon.net.

PS: Roanoke Co, VA was formed 1838 from Botetourt; so Jefferson could not have been born there - I think he was born in Berkeley Co, VA - but he may not ever have known that.
