From the Mobile. Alabama Newspaper:

Sunday, May 16, 1937:

• "W.F. Barton of 208 South Joachim Street was seriously ill three years ago. He has been convalescent ever since.

"During the long months he has been developing his talent as a metal worker until now he is a specialist in his field and the work he does is in demand.

"Barton makes model trains. Not toys, but miniatures of the new streamlined greyhounds of the railroads. He has been working on one of them -- fussing with the details and making minor changes in the lines for a long time."

Not my line, just sharing.

Re: Who Is Edmund West, collector of data on Roger Barton family? TWO

Mary. It takes just minutes to track down companies, etc. All of the Roger Barton data is stuff I've had for years.

Because the thread included the Roger Barton family in the title, and because it was on a Barton forum, I assumed you were a descendant of Roger Barton. I had never heard of the Edmund West data base: I don't use ancestry.com. So when Ed Neu provided the URL, it was quick (five minutes away) and easy to stop at the public library and look it up.

I'm always interested in sites that provide Roger Barton data. Then when I saw the Edmund West data for Roger Barton was absurd nonsense, I had to find the source. That wasn't hard to do, only one other place has such a concentration of Roger Barton nonsense. The LDS Ancestral File. So I gathered more of the Edmund West Barton data at the public library, and compared it to the old stuff on the now frozen LDS Ancestral File, and there it was.

You provided the opportunity and excuse for me to again put some of the Roger Barton nonsense online along with an explanation of what junk it is. So I thank you. At one time several years ago, I had the objective of cleaning up all the Roger Barton nonsense. Then new web sites began appearning that repeated the junk genealogy faster than I could clean up the earlier ones. The Barton Historical Society and its satellite; WikiTrees; findagrave, and a few forgetable sites. So I moved on to other things.

I did state where and how you could find the source of the Edmund West data, and what you could do about correcting it. I started a new thread so it would stand out for anyone who is just scanning titles of threads. It is at the thread titled "The source of the "Edmund West" data is the LDS Ancestral File." It is at:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.barton/2928/mb.ashx

No matter who your grandfather is, whatever his name, if he is in the Edmund West data base, he is almost certainly in the LDS Ancestral File the same way, so just follow the instructions in the new thread I identified above.

The source of the "Edmund West" data is the LDS Ancestral File

My messsage of April 23 under the thread titled "Who is Edmund West, collector of data on Roger Barton family?" ties Edmund West to the company that owns ancestry.com; rootsweb.com; Family Tree Maker, etc..

My message of April 25 under the same thread shows that at least some of the "Edmund West" data regarding Roger Barton is absurd on its face and certainly not based on birth records, marriage records, family Bibles, etc.. The message points out that ancestry.com itself states that if one finds one's ancestor in that data base, that one should confirm the data through original source records, meaning, but not saying, that the "Edmund West" data is not based on original source records. Thus we suspected the data was compiled from people entering data in the LDS Ancestral Files or the ancestry.com data bases.

Now, go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Click on Ancestral File in the menu on the left side of the screen.
Enter, for example, Joseph Barton, Event: Birth/Christening
Year: 1608. This is one of the absurd data points from the "Edmund West" data base as shown in my April 25 message on the thread mentioned above. Then click on Search.

Aha! This is our man, Westchester, Westchester, NY, just as in the "Edmund West" data base.

Click on Joseph Barton, and we find that his father is the fictious Edward Barton as shown in the "Edmund West" data base.

Now while we are on that screen, note at the top of the screen that it is titled, "Individual Record." Note on the right side the choices of Pedigree and Family. These correspond to the choices on the ancestry.com screen for their "Family Data Collection," i.e, "Family Trees" (Pedigree), "Family Data" (Family), and "Individual Records" (Individual Record).

Note also on the same screen, the line that reads "Submitter(s)" at the left and "Details" at the right. Click on "Details."

Now you have the names and addresses of those who submitted the data. I think the AF89, AF91, AF96, and AF95 are the years when the data was submitted.

Now go Back to the previous screen, the Individual Record for Joseph Barton, born 1608. Click on Joseph Barton's supposed father, Edward Barton. While you are on this page, note that Edward Barton supposedly was born in 1585 and died in 1688 at the age of 103 years in Westchester, NY, the same year and place at which his son Roger died. Wow. What a coincidence.

Also, still on the same page, note the quadruplets, Enoch, Joseph, Elisha, and Noah, all born in 1608, but the first of them was born in England. Then we have the twins, Thomas and Marmaduke, born in 1610. All of this is the absurd data found in the "Edmund West" data base.

Now click on the first child, Roger Barton, born 1628.

Note that Roger Barton's mother was "Mrs. Mary BARTON (AFN: 93ZF-TL)," and that Roger Barton's wife was "Mrs. Mary BARTON (AFN: 93ZF-TL)" Every person in the LDS Ancestral File has their own unique number. Therefore, we learn here that Roger Barton married his mother. The "Edmund West" data base does not include AFN numbers, hence it is not evident in the "Edmund West" data base that Roger married his mother.

Note also the following on this, and every other "Individual Record":

"About Ancestral File
"Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978. The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy."

No one should repeat this data in their own files and put it online without verifying its accuracy. Those who put unverified data online are practicing junk genealogy.

Now we are down to Mary's grandfather whose date of death is wrong in "Edmund West's" data base. Mary, go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Click on Ancestral File in the menu on the left side of the screen.

Enter your grandfather's name and see what come's up. Go to the Individual File and click on Submitter(s) Details. There you have the names and addresses to contact to correct the data. But they CANNOT correct the LDS Ancestral Files. They were frozen in 2001 or 2002 as I recall, and no changes, deletions, or additions, can be made. In turn, no changes can be made to the "Edmund West" data base because it is just a compilation of the LDS Ancestral Files.

The LDS Ancestral File, as it stood in about 2000, apparently was modfied slightly (remove the AFN numbers for example) and became the "Edmund West" data base.

I can't believe that you spent all this time and collected all this information. I hope it wasn't just to answer my post and I hope that Roger Barton is an ancestor of yours.

Unfortunately, he is not an ancestor of mine. I saw original post "Who is Edmund West..." and answered it because I, too, have had so many problems in finding data on my descendants that I know to be inaccurate or downright untrue.

What I find most frustrating is trying to correct errors on Ancestry.com. Even when provided with proof of an error, they will not correct it. One would think Ancectry.com would want their information to be correct, but that does not seem to be the case. At any rate, I keep paying my annual membership fee, even though I sometimes wonder if it is worth it.

However, thank you so much for taking the time to provide such a thorough and informative answer. I truly do hope ancestors of Roger Barton see it.

Mary

Hi Glenn, Glad you contacted me, I think there is a relationship connection here, my info is not confirmed but handed down from relatives mostly. I have some information on the Barton tree going back to 1725 with the more recent William Barton married to Martha living 1862 daughter Mary Anne Humphreys married 1847 to Edward Bailey father Joseph Bailey, no earlier info held about the Baileys. My connection is via Edward Bailey and Mary Anne Humphreys son Wiliam Bailey who married Selina Lewis and one of their children Bessie Bailey my great grandmother who married Walter Fowles and had eight children, one of them my mother Betty Selina Fowles (dec) married Henry Miller my father, so that is roughly how I have been told it all happened, some of my close relatives have more detail having visited the churches & grave both in the UK & Victoria to confirm the info.
I would be very interested if you have any info on the Baileys say relating to Edward Baileys children as I only have William relating to out direct line also any info relating to the Baileys prior to Edward.

I can send more info via email, scanned attachments etc. if you wish.

Hope to hear from you again, thank you for contacting me.

Rod Miller.
Correcting incorrect data.

In the case of interest, the person says the data base is incorrect. Just because one's own original source data differs from someone else's data does not necessarily mean the other person's data is incorrect.

In a sweep through a county in western Minnesota, I found an individual gravestone showing the deceased's date of death as Oct 16, 1893. The Register of Deaths in the County Court House showed that person's date of death as Oct 18, 1894. The county historical society had the old obituaries. The person's obituary showed his date of death as Oct 18, 1894, which matched the county record. The city was in charge of the cemetery. The city record showed the name of the person, but no dates.

By gathering four records we could conclude the following:
The actual date of death was Oct 18, 1894, in accordance with the county Register of Deaths and the obituary. The grave did not originally have a gravestone. The records in city hall were based on an inscription list made at some unknown time after the death and burial. Some time later, the family could afford a grave stone and had one made, but the date was based on someone's memory.

The moral of this story is to get ALL the possible records, not just one or two.

One cannot correct data in the LDS Ancestral Files nor in the "Edmund West" data base. However, one can go to "RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project Global Search" at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
and if one finds data bases with errors, one can Add Post-em
Mary: In this message, I will prove that the Edmund West data is not necessarily from sources that are authoritative.

Log in to ancestry.com
Go to "Family Data Collection - Individual Records"
Because you are a descendant of Roger Barton, enter Roger Barton, born 1628 and Search

You get THREE Roger Bartons. Click for a view of each, and it is clear that they are all the same person. All three are Roger Barton born in 1628 in Westchester, Westchester, NY, son of Edward Barton.

1. 1628 is eight years after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth in November, 1620. There were very few ships to Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay until the Winthrop Fleet landed in 1630. In 1628, there were no English anywhere near what became Westchester County, NY. The area that became Westchester County was part of a Dutch colony, New Netherland, until 1664. A handful of English people from what became Rhode Island fled in 1642 to the area just south of what became Westchester County, but returned to Rhode Island within a year or two. They were the followers of Anne Hutchinson. For a simplified chronology of early New York, see "The Register of New Netherland; 1626 to 1674," by E.B. O'Callaghan, originally published in 1865 and printed by Genealogical Publishing Co., 1995. In short, Edmund West’s “Family Data Collection” is not correct. There is no way Roger Barton was born in what became Westchester, Westchester, NY.

2. Please continue with the “Family Data Collection – Individual Records.” It claims that Elisha Barton, Joseph Barton, and Noah Barton, were all sons of Edward Barton, all born in Westchester, Westchester, NY, in 1608. That’s 12 years before the Mayflower landed in America. And triplets. Wow. Then it also claims that Marmaduke Barton and Thomas Barton were sons of Edward Barton, both born in Westchester, Westchester, NY, in 1610. Even more Wow. Triplets out in Indian country in 1608, followed by twins two years later, still out in Indian country. Does one need any more proof that the “Family Data Collection – Individual Records” is not a reliable data base?

3. There is no known record of Roger Barton being born in 1628. All that exists is a court record in 1688. Roger Barton was one of several witnesses in a hearing. The record begins with a listing of the witnesses, each name followed by an age of thus and so "or thereabouts." Roger Barton was recorded as age 60 years or thereabouts. The record did not show that he said that or testified to that. The way the court record reads gives the impression that the witnesses' ages were estimated by the recorder to distinguish between fathers and sons of the same names. For example, there were two Roger Bartons at that time and place, Roger and one of his sons. So the court recorder made it clear that it was the father that was a witness by estimating him to be 60 years old or thereabouts. The same for each of the other witnesses. Roger Barton's oldest son was born about 1662. So Roger Barton could have been born anytime before, say, 1642. To state that Roger Barton was 60 years old in 1688, and thus was born about 1628 is based on the assumption that the court recorder was good at guessing ages.

4. Roger Barton’s father is unknown. The name Edward Barton is from a July 1928 article in “The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (NYGBR),” page 239, which reads as follows:

“It has been stated that the original ancestor in America of Solomon Barton [a descendant of Roger Barton] was Edward Barton, a sea-captain, who brought his family from England and settled in the Barbadoes (sic) Islands. No printed record of this has been located, although it is said to exist in the Barbadoes. The same uncertain source is responsible for the statement that two sons of Edward, namely Roger and Rufus came to the Island of Manhattan about 1641 from Barbadoes. Rufus, very shortly afterwards went into the English colony at Providence, R.I., and was the founder of the Barton family of that section. Roger settled amongst the Dutch and in August, 1642, leased land of the Reverend Everardus Bogardus, second husband of Anneke Jans, on Manhattan Island . . .”

4.1 It was Rufus, not Roger who leased the land from Reverend Bogardus in 1642. That is proved by the original Dutch manuscript of the lease. See http://www.rogerbarton.com/rufus
See Chapter 1. See August 14, 1642. Therefore, the source was wrong. As stated above, this is the “same uncertain source” who stated that Roger Barton’s father was Edward Barton.

While on the subject of Rufus Barton, note that Rufus went to the area near Manhattan from Portsmouth, RI, not from Barbados as stated in the NYGBR article which was the basis for Edmund West's compilation regarding Roger Barton's father.

4.2 Note at the head of the NYGBR article that it was “Compiled by the Late Dr. Joshua Lindley Barton.” If Dr. Barton had passed away, who saw to the publication of the article? The answer is that Adolph Law Voge had it published. I have the originals of two letters signed by Voge in which he said he handled the publication. At the end of Dr. Barton’s article in the NYGBR , there are “Notes on English Barton Families,” written by Adolph Law Voge (signed Law Voge). The “notes” are looking for the father of Roger Barton, and they don’t even mention an Edward Barton. It seems from this that Voge did not believe the “uncertain source” who claimed that Roger Barton’s father was Edward Barton. In Voge’s 1937 address to the organization meeting of his “Roger Barton’s Kinsmen,” Voge wrote, “One young Barton genealogist, a decade ago, asserted that he had found a tradition that Roger had come via Barbadoes to Manhattan and that he had proven him to be son of a ship captain, Edward, plying between England and Barbadoes. He refused to cite his authorities and I think that they were imaginary.” That made it absolutely clear. Voge had talked to the “uncertain source” that Roger Barton was the son of Edward Barton and didn’t believe him.

4.3 The Barbados records were compiled by Joanne McRee Sanders and published by the Genealogical Publishing Company. They record about 200,000 individuals between the years 1637 to 1800. There is only one Edward Barton, and from the records, one can conclude that he was too young to have been the father of Roger Barton. The records are on Family Tree Maker’s CD#22,” International Records: English Settlers in Barbados.”

The bottom line is that the material about Roger Barton in Edmund West’s “Family Data Collection – Individual Records” is not correct and does not have any authoritative sources. The very incorrect Roger Barton data in West’s “collection” can be found in the LDS Ancestral Files and in RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project. The sources for both are simply whatever anyone entered. No legitimate sources are required. Anyone can enter anything. Neither the LDS nor RootsWeb do anything to verify the data.

Finally, we look again at ancestry.com’s description of the “Family Data Collection – Individual Records.” It states, “Millions of individual records were created from birth, marriage and death records; obituaries; probate records; books of remembrance; family histories; genealogies; family group sheets; pedigree charts; and other sources.” That is true, but it doesn’t say they gathered all those records. Those are the kinds of records used by those tens of thousands of individuals who entered data into the LDS Ancestral Files or the ancestry.com data bases from whatever sources, no matter how dubious. The last two sentences in the ancestry.com description are as follows:

“Use this database as a finding tool, just as you would any other SECONDARY source. When you find the name of an ancestor listed, confirm the facts in ORIGINAL sources, such as birth, marriage, and death records, church records, census enumerations, and probate records for the place where the event took place.” [Emphasis added by me]

So ancestry.com disclaims that any authoritative sources (original sources) were used by them in their compilation.

Mary, in my next message, with all this background behind us, we will get to your original question about the source of the error in your grandfather’s date of death, and how to correct it.

Mary: Sorry I was so abrupt in my answer to you. The subject of errors in genealogy is a real sore spot with me. You could not find anyone in the world more interested in correcting errors than I am.

In any event, let me cover this with about three messages.

First. Who is Edmund West? etc. Thanks to Ed Neu who provided a great starting point for chasing this down.

The source information at
http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=4725
states that Edmund West was the compiler for "The Generations Network, Inc." Who is "The Generations Network, Inc." of Provo, UT?

A bing.com search gets us to:
http://provoutah.us/pg.html?pg=538
Where we learn that The Generations Network, Inc. is a company that includes MyFamily.com, Ancestry.Com, DNA Ancestry, and RootsWeb. Click on the link TGN in the last paragraph and you end up at the corporate home page of ancestry.com

Here we find that the company consists of ancestry.com, family tree maker, RootsWeb, etc. There are links to their "about" page, to investor relations, etc. So the whole shebang is just one business.

Now we know that all this stuff is from the ancestry/rootsweb complex, and we can suspect that the source of the Edmund West "compilation" is simply a compilation of whatever people have entered in WorldConnect, etc, at some point in history.

My next message will prove the suspicion that the Edmund West compilation is simply data that everyone has entered in the ancestry/rootsweb web sites, and that it is not particularly authoritative.

While I know it's not uncommon, it's made it difficult by times to trace my paternal ancestry. My paternal Great Grandmother was born in New Brunswick, Canada to French parents. Her birth name was Clementine Bertin, but upon moving to the U.S., she made subtle changes to her name and it became Clementina Barton. I'm not sure when she moved to the U.S. from Canada and I don't know who the biological father to my Grandfather was, even though he took his step-father's surname, Brown. Clementina's second husband's surname was Douglass. Grampy Brown's birth record shows no father, just Clementina as his mother.

Re: Roger>Joseph>Caleb>Caleb>Caleb>Thompson>Sherman

I found the Keese Bible record. It adds only the date of death of Caleb D. Barton who was born Dec 22, 1807. He died January 3, 1856. There is nothing about his children.

You should be able to find more about Thompson and Sherman and their wives and families by looking for death records and obits of any of the children.

My first message did not include the original source records. The data for Caleb Barton and Damaris Hull, their marriage and their children, came from Adolph Law Voge's records. Voge copied the records in the 1920's from a Bible dated 1831 which was owned by Mrs. F. E. Spaulding of Washington, DC. Voge sent a copy to the Genealogical Secretary of the Boston Transcript for their records. In the early 1950's, George E. McCracken copied Voge's earlier records.

McCracken's version (NEHGR, July 1953, pages 208/9) has an obvious error. It shows the youngest child, Sarah, as born in 1781. Since her mother, Damaris, was born in 1769, Damaris would have been 12 years old when her daughter Sarah was born. The original data shows Sarah was born in 1811, not 1781.

Going back a generation, Caleb Barton, born about 1725. His children are named in his will, Poughkeepsie Wills, File Box 933. The material is probably on microfilm at the LDS.

Going back another generation, Joseph Barton named his chidren in his will. That will is in Albany, but is also on LDS microfilm.

Going back to the immigrant, Roger Barton named his children in his will of July 1688. Adolph Law Voge estimated their birth years and provided them in his 1937 address to his Roger Barton's Kinsmen organization.

Mary Lounsberry was not the wife of Roger Barton. See "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register," Vol. CVI, July, 1952, page 171. Roger Barton's wife is unknown, and their date of marriage is unknown.

Joseph2 Barton was married three times. The mother of Caleb3 was Abigail Lewis. Joseph2 and Abigail Lewis were married 5 May 1717 at Grace Church, Jamaica, Long Island. See NEHGR Vol. CVI, October, 1952, page 303.

Caleb3 Barton's wife is known only as Rose, maiden name unknown. Marriage date unknown.

Caleb4 Barton's wife was Damaris Hull, born 22 Oct 1769. Date of marriage unknown, but probably about 1790, based on the date of birth of their first child, born 1 June 1791. See NEHGR, Vol CVII, July 1953, pages 208/9.

Caleb5 Barton's wife was Caroline White, born 29 December 1807, widow of Lewis Nathaniel Palmer. See NEHGR, Vol CVII, July 1953, page 209.

Sarah5 Barton, younger sister of Caleb5 Barton, married Robert E. Keese. The Keese Family Bible might have more to say about the family of Caleb5, but it will take me a bit to find it, so I will call this quits for tonight.
Hello,
I hope you are still getting messages from this post. Charley Monroe Barton and Vena Delphia Crabtree were my great grandparents. My brother and I have recently started searching family history and the Barton side has proven to be the most challenging. I have contacted the Barton Historical Society and they say that there is a lot of incorrect data once you get back a few generations past Charley Monroe. They do have him, and his father, Peter Monroe Barton listed on their index. Any information you have would be appreciated. Charley and Vena's daughter Thelma is my grandmother; she is 91 and still living in Summersville, MO near Hartshorn and the Antioch Cemetery where so many Barton's are buried.
Did you ever get to meet Charley and Vena 'Dell'? They were wonderful people.
Edith McKee

Who were Robinson W. and Daniel W. Barton; served in Civil War

I'm trying to see if there is any relation between these two men and my ancestor Silas P. Barton. All 3 served in the Civil War in the 109th Infantry, from New York.

Robinson is listed as being 18 at the time and Daniel was 21.

If these two belong in anyone's family tree, then we may be able to figure out if there's a relation.

http://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/civil/rosters/Infantry/1...

Hi Vernon. Based on your email to me stating that George Washington Barton (1834-1919) is your direct ancestor: your paper trail should continue back to James Barton, b c1746 (probably in) Prince William Co VA. The yDNA for multiple men we have tested in this family are Lineage I and the details indicate that this family is a part of the Stafford County VA branch of Lineage I. (which could be descended from Thomas Barton (1,2,3) or one of the other Barton men found on either side of the Potomac in the area now occupied by Quantico Marine Base

We’ll be happy to help you with yDNA testing, but can’t provide a sponsored test since your family is adequately tested for our purposes. That said, we are always happy to gain additional info and will be happy to support you as you do a yDNA test. You would want to do the yDNA 37 ($149 + $4) or 67 marker ($228 + $4 if my memory is correct)

Here is some info I put online: www.thomasbarton.org I realize as I look at it that I need to mention the other Barton men living nearby in the late 1600s and early 1700s as they could also be your ancestor - instead of Thomas (1,2,3)

Terry
12 years later, but I was just browsing and noticed you surname, Voss. I wonder if you have any family connection to any of these surnames:ODonnell, Nelson, Anglehofer, Wiltfang, Zerr, Voss, and I think I am missing a few.
They were all over the country, but SD, Wash State, California, Idaho, primarily I think.
My connection starts with the O'Donnells, (Patrick) who was born in Co Cork Ireland in about 1844, to James O'Donnell and Elizabeth Carney(I think).
The Nelson's immigrated from Norway.

Barbara
