I have always heard that I was some how related to Sam Bass. My grandfather was Fred Bass of Wickliffe Ky. He was married to Myrtle M. Stallions of Missouri. They had 9 children one of which was my mother Mattie Jane Bass. I noticed that one of the relatives was "Mattie W. Bass". I remember my grand mother telling me she named my mother after my grandpa's relative. You think there maybe a connection there.???
Looking for info on a Fredrick(or Frederick) H Bass Sr. Born abt 1782.

He had a son named Fredrick Bass Jr... and then HE had a son named Fredrick Boss Bass. So you can guess it is hard to find info on the Sr without crossing wires with the others.

Sr moved back and forth between Southeastern NC and Lake View SC area, the best I can figure.

Any bones (no pun intended) you can throw me to help me out would be appreciated.

I am looking for parents/family for Nancy Ann Bass.
I believe both Nancy and John were born in Darlington, South Carolina, and married there around 1820. By 1850 they moved to Barbour County, in south Alabama. They are there in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. They both died about 1870.
I would be grateful for any information on Nancy Ann's family.
Thanks so much.
Genie

Traveling to Virginia would be great but it doesn't fit into my schedule either. My research has been limited to internet searches. I love all the information you can get from the internet, at the same time, it can be frustrating to not have access to physical information.

I was not very close with my Dad's family and am surprised to hear that I have relatives in Lancaster. My Grannie Bass (Nellie Cooley) lived in Lancaster.

Sorry I didn't see your fb message. I think fb messaging is a more suitable place to share my ideas on John's parents. I have a few and this way if I find out, someday, that I am wrong it won't be forever archived on this board.
To the descendants of John Bass of Virginia via his son Henry,

In the search for the parents of John Bass has anyone tried looking in Halifax County shortly before and/or shortly after the war?

The father-in-law of John was Matthew Farmer. Matthew's father Frederick moved the family from Chesterfield Co. to Halifax Co. when Matthew was about 12 yrs old in some time before the Rev. War around the yrs 1771 or 72. After the war Matthew married Molly Glass of that same county. From what I understand, John Bass married Matthew and Mary (Molly) Glass Farmer's eldest child Frances in Halifax County. The Farmer, Glass, and Bass families would have all known each other. The parents of John would have been residents of that same county.

I have noticed that the descendants of the English living in Virginia in the 16, 17, and 1800s all recycled the givens names in their families. Therefore it is possible that John had a brother named Henry and one named Joseph.

Here is a forum where they are discussing the fate and where-abouts of Joseph Bass and of Henry Bass and a John Bass and they say that Henry died in Halifax county in 1818. He might have been the brother of our John Bass who married Frances Farmer.

http://genforum.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?halifax::bass::5874...

Jim Farmer,
Florissant, Mo

Joseph was born about 17 years after Thomas. Big family and a lot of years between siblings. My grandfather was named Marshall Bass, from Lancaster, WI. I'm trying to set up a meeting with my uncle who lives in the area. He took my grandfather for one last stroll around the family farm in 1990 and wants to show me around the area.

I am indeed on Facebook. I sent a request to join the group last week and sent you an email (via FB) as well. I'd like to hear your theories on John's parents at some point. I too have hit a wall at that point and I don't want to travel to Virginia to finish the project.

Hi AJ, Joseph was one of the younger children, right? Benaga and Addie had quite a big family and most records don't have spouses or children listed. Do you know about the Bass surname DNA project? They have a facebook page that you may want to join, if you do facebook, that is. The page has a lot of good information. However, no one has yet to find out who John Bass's parents are. I have a few theories but no proof. If there is ever a Bass reunion let me know. My mom lives in Platteville and I visit her quite often.

Next time i am over in that area, I will take a picture of his headstone and post it on my family tree. Since I have some information on my tree about his family, would you like to be invited to look at his information? I could send you an invite.

Date of death is Jan 28, 2000 he was 77 years old. He is listed in the 1930 census record as Edward Bass, age 18, living with his mother and father. Yes we are kin, since he married my Aunt Jewel Dean Peden (madien name) we would be cousins by marriage. YOu are also kin to my 1/2 brothers and a 1/2 sister, Charles Bass, Donna Bass, and Sammy Gargis. Charlie and Donna are children of my Mom and Marcos Bass, and Sammy is the child of my Mom and Lon D Gargis. Charlie and Donna live local to me, and Sammy lives in Vermont. Sammy probably would have no blood kin to you, but I thought you might be interested since we was around Ed when he was young. I will ask my brother, Charlie and my sister, Donna some questions about him... What would you like me to ask them?

AJ,
Thanks for writing. My name is Jim Farmer and I live in Florissant in north St. Louis County in Missouri. I was the one that started this line. I have a lot of info on the ancestors of Benaja and wanted to make sure it did not go to waste.

It looks like you and I are cousins through Benaja's great grand father Matthew Farmer. (Matthew would be your 5th great grandfather). Matthew was a Rev. War veteran and was at the battle of York town when George Washington won the war. He married Mary (Molly) Glass in Halifax County, Va after the war. They had 6 kids. Frances was their first and she married John Bass and had a few kids before Frances died in about 1820. That is the line that you are descended from. I am descended from the little brother of France, Samuel B. Farmer. If my math is correct we would be 5th cousins once removed.

In my next post I will explain how your line got from Virginia to Wisconsin via St. Charles County, Missouri and how the Farmer line got to Jamestown in Virginia from England.
farmerfamilytree1yahoo.com

My Mom remembers Ed saying he had lived in IL during his first marriage. She said she remembers his son, from his first marriage, writting him a letter asking for Ed to help him buy a car. She said that Ed wrote him back and told him that he could move to Cherokee, AL and live with him and Jewel Dean. Ed wrote that he could find a job and pay for his own car and that his son did not move to AL. Mom thought he had two boys though. She remembers Ed being very good looking too.
That is all she remembers right now.....
When Mom thinks about it for a while, she might remember something else and she will let me know.
I hope this helps

Oakdale community and also "Black Ankle" also have Bass cemeteries as well as many descendants. I am related to Elijah Bass, born 1775 in Anson County NC. His son was John Elijah Bass, 1796; his son was John Ance Bass, 1838 in Marion County SC; his son John Gordon Bass (my grandfather)1896; and my father James Howard Bass, 1922. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of times the people were called by their middle names, i.e. my dad was Howard, granddad was Gordon, and so on. I have seen docs that show Elijah Bass's father was Frederick Bass, born 1756 in Granville, NC, died 1802.
