Hi,

Sorry it's taken a while to see this and sorry I'm replying with my husband's ID...

The Mary Elizabeth Bassel I have was the daughter of David Bassel & Margaret Summerville Burnside. I don't have a Gordon or female Young in my tree (yet?) but that doesn't mean they aren't related somehow. I'd love to compare lines anyway!

Thanks,
Carolyn

Re: BASSEL OR BASSELL?

My grandfather was Sigmund Max Bassell born to Rosa & Aron BASSEL. On the 1910 cewnsus it shows, only 1 L. But, my grandfather must've changed it to 2 L's. In fact, My g.f shows up on the WWI draft lists(altho in the wrong place) as BASSELL. My father was Walter E. Bassell & his older sister was Gladys Bassell Schneiderman(later shorteded to Snyder)He was born in 1917 & my aunt born in 1912. My father,Walter married Belle Ruth Feldheim in 1939. I am the older of 2 daughters born to them. My aunt Gladys married Henry Snyder & they had 2 children,Judith & Allen. We are all Jewish. Strangely, my g.f. older brother is not mentioned in the 1910 census, only his sister,Lena.Where was he ? Was he a figment of someone's imagination? In the draft registration there is mention of 2 Max Bassells. My g.f was commonly called "Max". One of the 2 was living in the Bronx,NY & my g.f. was living in Kings County,Brooklyn, NY. This puzzles me to find 2 different Max Bassells. OR, were there TWO? I've told you all I know;I hope this helps you. If you know more, please send the info at kjoephyllis@msn.com. Thank you.

I've been researching my husband's family and they have merged with the Bassel's living near Parkersburg, WV & Harrison Co. in the 18-1900's. Some of the Bassel names I have are:

David, Margaret, Ida, Mary Elizabeth, Lucinda Bird, & William M.; Ida married Walter Eggleston Fleming and their sons were Walter Bassel Fleming & Richard Lacy Fleming.

Does anyone recognize any of these names?

Thanks!

One of the most common variants in the UK seems to be Bassill (and several variations such as Bassil and Basill). Around Hatfield in Hertfordshire there are published family trees for Bassill back to early 1600s, and before that in the same area, the Bassilly family is known back to mid 1200s.

If you get stuck I would try that route.

Regards

I am Carol Suzanne Quine, the great grand daughter of Robert Quine and Susannah Bassel who moved from Harrison County Virginia to Bell County Texas.

I have looked at the derivation of the name Bassel. I think it is a Jewish/ middle Eastern name. I have found it on lists of Jewish names from Galicia. Galicia could be in Austria, Spain or Poland.

I speculate that Benjamin Bassel's father may have been a Jewish convert to Christianity.

I just posted an announcement of a new Jackson web site. On it is a transcription of a Jackson Ledger (1887) that contains info on a Henry Bassel 1828-1887. The Bassel info starts at the bottom of pg 29 and goes through pg 38. Hope this will make some connection for you.
http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com

Just want to announce that a new Jackson web site is available. The purpose of the web site is to find and record as many branches of descendants of Robert Jackson (1620-1685) as possible and make a connection place for many Jacksons. In addition to the family tree data, the site has many other pages to browse; a major one being the transcription of a Jackson Ledger found at Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants Library. It was written in 1887 and connects many other related families including Bailey, Arnold, Atkins, Bassel and others. This Ledger has helped many to break down their brick walls. So come and explore this site: http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com.

I'm David Basell of Western Australia.

From my searching of the net, and life experience of others mispelling my surname, Basell, that throughout history there has been many mispellings of Basell, or Basel or Bassel or Bassell or even Basil.

My great grandfather was Arthur Charles BASELL Birth: ABT. 1892 in Pomerania. His brother came to Australia as well, but I haven't been able to find anyone before them. Can anyone help?

I read that you have researched the Bassel(l) family. Well I have a question for you. My great great grandfather is supposedly Jahan Bassil (as it is listed in a census) however, the problem is that he apparently changed his name to John H. Spinks after showing up on a 1850 Georgia census shown as living with Cash and John T. M. Spinks.
To: c.collins
I don't have any further info on the Bassel(l) name; however, if you List Messages in the Bassel Message Board, you'll find a series of exchanges between Kathy Wolnik, John B. Bassel Jr., and shirley gordon kohlhof that look pretty lucrative. I plan to write a query to John B. Bassel Jr., myself.

I know more about my Roberts surname. Robert Roberts and his family came over from Wales in 1850, and settled in Irondale, Jefferson Co., OH. They spread in many directions from there, including New Kensington, PA, and Chicago. Let me know if you think we connect. John Roberts

Bassel or Bassell

I have traced the Bassel family back to Benjamin Bassel, born 1785, Litchfield, CT, died 1856, VA (now West Virginia). Benjamin Bassel's son was Daniel Bassel, whose son was Guy Bassel, whose son was John Burr Bassel Sr., who was my father. My grandfather, Guy Bassel, sometimes signed his name "Bassell." His brother signed his name Burr Bassell. He was the author of a book on construction of earthen dams.
I believe the name has been spelled both ways throughout the family in Connecticut, West Virginia, and Tennessee. There is another branch of the family in Texas, which all spell the name with one "l".
I have fairly extensive information on both these branches of the family and would be glad to share this with you.
John B. Bassel Jr.
402 5th Ave. West
Springfield, TN 37172
