My Dad was Luther Marion Bassett. His Brother and Wife Dewey and Gassie recorded for RCA Bluebird Records in the 40's. His Sister Adelle and her husband Rupert owned Trepur Records in Lagrange Georgia and they were members of the McClendon Brothers Group. My Dads siblings that I can remember were Dewey,Jesse,Jay,Carlas,Anne,Adelle,Charlie, and Rose. Anne married a Gonzalez and Adelle a McClendon.I often wondered if my family was related to the Bassett Furniture Industry. I think my Dad's Mom was a Brown before she married my Grand Father.

Devoe Bassett is My grandmother's uncle. My Grandmother was Julia Rita Dalton, maiden name Turner, her mother was Ada, who was Devoe's sister.I have news paper clippings of his accomplishments as the "only colored" letter carrier, who was a carrier for 32 years entering into service in 1906. He was also some what of an athelete playing both football and baseball. and played with the local professional football squad for two years during the rival between Oil City and Franklin. I also have great photos of him he was a handsome man. His sister Ada Turner was married to Alfred Anderson Turner.

Hi, Diane! Thanks for responding to my inquiry! I had given up looking for a reply to my "shot in the dark" question. I'm slowly but surely locating info on this family. When I started, I only had Henriette Marcille's name on the back of a picture to go on. She was my great-grandmother. Her daughter (Esther) was my grandmother who died when I was 8. I've attached a pedigree chart of what I assume to be her ancestral line. Please let me know if there is a connection. I have pictures of Henriette, her sister Louise & husband(?) Abe Akay, and the Thomas Bassett family. You said that Harriet Bassett died before 1915. That explains why she just seemed to "drop out of sight". Do you have any information about that...did she marry...what caused her death, etc.?
Thank you, again, for posting a reply.
irigwald@frontiernet.net (if this is easier to contact me)

Hi Megan,

No you are not going down the wrong path. These were all the children of Joseph and Jane (Gibson) Bassett. I'm not sure about the last 3 but they are mentioned in Minnie's obit. I am doing some research for a descendant of Elizabeth. Elizabeth did marry William E.Fraser but he died in 1928, she married 3 more times! I too have not found any registered births for these children and outside of Martha I think every one of them was sent to Canada via Barnardo. I'm sure the family was poor but I can't for the life of me understand why they let so many go.

Sandra

Is your friend related to that Bassett family? Those Bassetts are from East Malling, Kent and settled in Canada. I only have two of the children traced, William Ward and Emily Elizabeth. Emily stayed in Canada. William Ward moved to Massachusetts.

I would very much like a copy of the family bible.
I am looking for any descendants of Henry Bassett and Violet Muriel (Dolly)Fleming of Omagh. They had 4 children: Terrence, Brian, Tony and Patsy. Tony was killed on D-Day flying a Hurricane over France. Patsy married John, I am told, and they had a pig-farm in England. A cousin David Kelly met them some years ago but lost contact with them. I have much information that I would like to share if you are interested. My grandfather was James Greer Fleming, Violet's brother.
Tony Fleming
New Zealand

Gertrude was living with husband Devoe for the 1920 and 1930 census. It appears they had no children. I have a copy of Devoe's obituary from the Oil City newspaper from December 1, 1943.
GOINS-BASSETT

Hello list,

I just found a Social News announcement in the Canton (OH) Repository about the nuptials of Gertrude Goins b. 1881 and DeVoe or De Voe Bassett b.1879. I believe they were both native Pennsylvanians. They married 3 December, 1916 at St. Timothy's Church of said city.

While Devoe may have remained in the Keystone State, Gertrude moved to Canton with her parents Roswell James Goins and Elizabeth Murrerlls-Goins. They are in the Pennsylvania Censuses 1880 and Ohio Censuses for 1900 and 1910. Her father passed away 1912 and her mother I am not sure.

I have tried Ancestry.com city directories but they seem to be in beta at the moment.

If you have anyone information about either one of these individuals I would kindly appreciate it if you would let me know.

Thanks in advance!

You may want to join FIND-A-GRAVE at www.findagrave.com and post a memorial to your brother at Camellia Memorial. I've checked the web site and there are already over 1,000 memorials at that cemetery. After you've got the memorial up, you can place a "REQUEST" for a Find-A-Grave photo volunteer to take the picture. In looking there tonight, there is 1 request which has been "claimed". That means that there is definitely someone out there who is willing to help! If you have any trouble, I can post the memorial for you with the info you've provided, request the photo and then, after you've signed up, transfer it to you. Let me know!

Here's the link to Camellia Memorial Lawn Cemetery: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=78...;

Good luck!
Dave Robison

Hi Ken

I am Charles' Great Great Grandaughter. I too am trying to piece together what happened to Charles after he arrived in Canada.

I would dearly love the photo as the boy is my Grandad Tom.

Isabella told people Charles had died and that is why she returned to the UK.

I know we have a lot more to discuss. I hope we can get in touch.

Regards

Dawn

I have a little info on him and Isabella...like Tom is my Grandfather.

I'm still trying to find out what happened to Charles after Isabella's returned to England (she reported he died).

If you are still researching, perhaps we can compare notes.

Regards

Dawn

Found entry in Chris Giffing receipt book regarding work done on Feb 27, 1815 by Ebenezer Bassett. Giffing was a silversmith born in New York city on December 28, 1789. Ebenezer was paid $15 for "work done". Do not know if this is your GGG grandfather, but coincidence is too great.
