I know that Bast is German for craftsman. In the 15-18 centuries people's last names were frequently related to their occupations, so this seems most likely to me.

Looking for any photos or information on Engelbert Bast 1834-1913 and his wife Gerturde Appell Bast 1836-1917. Englebert and his sons worked as masons in Illinois and San Francisco before coming north to Tacoma Washington and finally homesteading near what is currently Everett Washington. Englebert and Gerturde ran a large farm on their homestead and their son John Bast later ran the family brick yard in the city of Everett Washington. There are photos of John Bast and his family and of the brickyard. My great grandmother (Mary Elizabeth Bast McDougall) did not leave much information about her parents. Any information about this side of my family and photos would be greatly appreicated!

Albert Bast is my gg father as well. I have also traced him as far back as you have, but do not know his parent's names. His wife was Catherine Bickert born May 1850 in Pa. They had children-Leonard-March 1878, Fred-July 1880, Dora-July 1884, William-Feb 1887, Jacob-May 1889.
Their son William Paul Bast was my Mom's(Alberta Catherine Bast Kennedy)dad. She was named after her grandpa Albert.
William Bast married Carrie Maude Shaak in Allentown, Pa. in Dec.1920. They had 3 kids-Alberta (Bast-Kennedy), William Jr., and Pearl(Bast-Gualtiere). Alberta and Pearl are still living. My Mom was born in 1923 and she thinks both Albert and Catherine died before 1930 as she has little memory of them. They lived in West Hazleton. My Mom lived in Hazleton until 1954 and my granny Carrie Bast until her death in 1992. I suppose we are related. Happy for any new info you find and I will gladly share any I find.I am new to this. I do have pictures of William Bast I hope to post soon, but none of Albert.
Lori Kennedy Peelman

Hi,
Thanks for posting. My Basts probably came over before 1750 and could, indeed, be considered Pennsylvania Dutch. There are at least six Basts or Bast families documented as arriving between 1710 and 1752 on ships list included in the "Palentine Project". I've documented my family to a man who was born in Pennsylvania in 1799; He may be part of a family that is documented back a couple more generations in this country. One history indicates an early Bast family in the area might be of Jewish extraction, and I would be interested in pursuing that.

In any event, it sounds like our families don't overlap, at least this side of the pond, which is good because it was going to be tough going translating the German!

Best wishes,
Ellen

Hi,
the book "The Bast Genealogy and related Families" by Sila L. Bast shows her Bast ancestors/relatives from the Hunsrück area (State Rheinland-Pfalz; Germany)who emigrated to the US in the 19th century.
My Bast ancestors are from the Eifel area (Rheinland-Pfalz) and I am not related to Sila L. Bast. Some of my Bast-relatives also emigrated to the US also in the 19th century.

I assume the Bast in Pennsylvania belong to the Pennsylvanian Dutch. The Pennsylvania Dutch are the descendants of Germanic peoples who emigrated to the U.S. (primarily to Pennsylvania), from Southwestern Germany, Palatinate and Switzerland.
Here you will find some information about my "Bast Genealogy"; page 1 and 2.

http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/wgff/koblenz/rb21.pdf

As the family name Bast is the short form of Sebastian one can imagine that there are many, many Basts who are not related. Sometimes the name ist also written Bost, Best.

Even this only general Bast information I hope it will be of some help to you.

Erwin Matthias Bast

Hi,
I didn't know there was a Bast Genealogy published. Can either of you shed any light on the first immigrant from this family or whether it covers the Basts of Berks County, Pennsylvania or early to mid NJ?
Thank you, thank you. That was the best help!! I also found the book by Sila Lydia Bast called "The Bast Genealogy and Related Families" which takes this part of the family back to Johann Georg Bast, born 1673. It was privately published in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, March 1971. I found a copy in the Library of Congress. I was not quite sure this was my Paul Bast but now I know, YES it is.

I cannot thank you enough. I have been stuck on this part of the family for a long time and now...WOW is all I can say. You even helped me with Minnie Moldenhauer. Her death certificate said her father's name was Jacob so I had a difficult time finding her. I am so excited! Thank you so much.
Bonnie Beal

I am looking to see what happened to Peter Paul Bast in Mosel, WI. I think this may be my GG Grandfather. We do not know his first or could be middle name. I unfortunately do not have the entire "The Bast Genealogy" by Sila Lydia Bast. On page 69, she talks about (Peter) Paul Bast and the land he owned with Ferdinand Petermann. At my GG Grandfather's marriage to Wilhelmina Moldenhauer (Jan 1, 1867) is a witness named Ferdinand Petermann. I think this (Peter) Paul may be my GG Grandfather. Can anyone help?
Thank you all so much.

I found a 1860 US Census that has a Bast family in Mosel, Sheboygan, WI as follows: Paul Bast 46; Mary E Bast 32; Peter Bast 21; Paul Bast 17; Paulina Bast 14; Jacob Bast 12; George Bast 9; Catherine Bast 5; Michael Bast 3; Mary Bast 2; Charles Bast 6/12.
This is what I can find that fits the closest to when Paul was born. Looking through his daughter's autograph book, I found an entry from someone in Sheboygan, WI but I believe that is the city not the county. I do not know WI. It looks like we may be from different Bast families. Thanks for responding.

My relative is Johann August Bast (1939-1918), father is Johann Bast and mother is Frederike Aeufse. J.A. Bast was married to Anna Engelbert, and lived primarily in Bloomfield, WI. Other Bast relatives lived in Milwaukee, Fon Du Lac, and Marshfield. The tree doesn't go any further back right now, but I'm wondering if there may be a WI connection...

This questions is not easy to answer. Sometimes Bast and Bost are the same but not always !!! It depends on the date/year, area/county/state and some other facts one should take in mind. In all my searches I have decided when I do searches in a specially county (in Germany or in the US) first to collect all the Bast/Bost and later I try to find out whether they are related to each other or not.
As you do not give any information about your Bost like names, places etc I am not able to give you a satisfied answer.
Bast is the short form of the name Sebastian; in Germany the familyname Bast was written in many ways:
Sebastian, Sebasten, Sebast, Basten, Bast
Greetings, E.M.Bast, Mannheim, Germany

Is it possible that Bast could be Bost or vice versa? I have seen some of these same given names on the Bost board. Just curious because I have Bost family that I am trying to find information on. Many thanks in advance for any and all information shared or postings answered, they are greatly appreciated.

Tina

It as been awhile since your post in 2005 and I was wondering if you have had any success finding information aobut Englebert's parents. I always wondered where my grandfather got the middle name Elglebert,
guess I know now! Do you have any photos of the family that you could share? All I have is Mary Elizbeth as a grandmother.
Thanks,
Laura McDougall Fornalski

Hi all!
I've been scanning my family photos and wondered if anyone could help me identify these people. I'm pretty sure they are (or at least one of them is) the Bast family. One of the beer drinkers might be August Bast (b. 1876). The flood family may also be related to the Zuelke family. some of the other photos I had were from a photographer in Fond du Lac. Does anyone see a familiar face?

best,
Li

Johann Friedrich BAST (or BASS) m. Elisabeth SCHNEIDER, 1761, Germantown

I am looking for information on Johann Friedrich BAST (or BASS) and Elisabeth SCHNEIDER, who were married Easter Tuesday, 1761 at St. Michael's & Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Germantown, Philadelphia County. They had two children baptised at the same church.

Lorentz, b. 28 Dec 1761; father -- Johann Friedrich BAST, mother -- Elisab. (SCHNEIDER).
Joh. Friedrich, b. 15 Nov 1764; father -- Joh. Friedrich BAST, mother -- Elisabeth.

The baptism records for this family end at this point and there aren't any will records for them on the Philadelphia Co., PA USGenWeb site so I assume that they moved away from that area. I would like to find where this BAST (or BASS) family moved, if that's possible. Thanks very much.
