Hi,

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. Horace Batchelder is my ggrandfather Horace m. Bessie Field and they had 3 son's Gilbert, Robert, Earl, I also heard that they adopted a son (Lowell ?). My grandfather is Gilbert Batchelder. I have been trying to
research this family, I have found a lot of info but I am mainly looking for stories about what happened to them and photos. I guess this does make us related somewhere on this ancestry line of Batchelder's/Bowen's. Thank you again. Sandy

I'm looking for information on the children of Warren Lloyd Batchelder and Ethel Irene (Gould) Davis. I know everything about Warren except for these children. I know that there are 7 total, the first being Meredith Elaine (born 2/15/1947 in Pittsfield, Maine) and after that there was born a son, daughter, 3 sons, and another daughter. Most, if not all, are probably still alive today. I'm just looking primarily for the names.

There are no records in Bethel that reveal the info I`m seeking. County Clerk and Windsor Co. Hist Soc. have checked.He was a physician and served for 2 enlistments from IL in the Civil War. Hi, Does the name Joseph W. Bachelder sound familiar? Born 26 Mar 1825 in Bethel, Windsor Co. Vt I have searched for 40 years trying to find out the names of his parents/siblings if any. There are no records in Windsor Co. that even mention Joseph. He was a physician and served in two enlistments from IL during the Civil War.In the 1870 Fed Census, Boone Co. Trying to find info on this Meribah Batchelder b. 7 Dec 1733. Born same town (Hampton, NH) in right year for my George Purington(Purinton, Puddington, Purrington) who m. a Meribah ??? about 1750. I've found no other m. for her, would like to rule her in or out if possble.

He was b. Quaker, m. outside the faith by a minister but was excepted (allowed to return) about twenty-five years later. He and his wife both died Quakers (he died 1807, she died 1817) in Epping, NH.

It's my understanding that the Batchelders were never Quakers but Meribah could have converted when her husband was excepted.

I would really appreciate any info anyone has about the life of this Meribah.

William Batchelder had a sister Ida Ann b. 13 Jun 1869 NY, m. to George E Tennant, d. 28 Jul 1947 Stillwater, MN.
Family living in Virginia, Union co, SD in 1900; living in Glanavon, Emmons co , ND in 1910 & 1920.

William & Ida's parents were William Batchelder and Harriet Nelson.

William's grandparents were Charles Batchelder and Eunice Tennant.

I have a Charles Batchelder, father of Elroy (Upstate NY. Elroy's death certificate gives Charles birthplace as Barre, VT. I have a page from a book that gives Ira as Charles's father, but I can't link the two in the census. Are these the same family you have?

Would they be William Batchelder, b. Oct 1873 NY, m. to Emma Jane William and having children John, b. 1895; Harry, b. 1897; Leo, b. 1898;, Winnie, b. 1900, Quentin, b. 1904. Family living in Virginia, Union Co, SD in 1900.

By 1908, Emma & William are divorced and Emma m. Peter Anderson. In 1910 Census, the two youngest Batchelder children are with them.

I have a William Batchelder, b. Oct 1873 New York, parents born Vermont, living in Virginia, Union County, South Dakota in 1900. Wife Emma [nee Williams], sons John, age 4, Harry, age 2, and Leo, age 1. They also had Winnie, b. abt 1901 and Quentin, b. about 1904.

By 1908, Emma & William are divorced, and Emma has married Peter Anderson, and is shown in the 1910 Census with the two younger Batchelder children.

He was married to Fanny Ober of Beverly Ma,She died in 1850 and he remarried Priscilla Coffin Of Maine they were married in Londonderry in1852. Died, at her home in Boody, Aug 24, at 2:10 p.m. Laura Esther, wife of Oliver H. Batchelder, aged 37 years and 10 months. Mrs. Batchelder was the only daughter of David B. Batchelder of Decatur, and leaves besides her husband and father, a brother, Wilbur R. Batchelder, and two daughters, Helen, 5, and Violet, 2 years old. She had been failing in health for the past two years and on Tuesday last suffered a stroke of paralysis followed by a second Thursday morning. Prayers will be offered at the house on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the funeral services will be held at the Illini church at 2 p.m.

Benjamin Batchelder 1764-1838 New Hampshire, Poultney, VT

I'm looking for potential parents for Benjamin Batchelder of Poultney, VT. He was apparently born in New Hampshire (according to a daughter's 1880 census records). He was married to a Polly ? and had at least five children. His dates on his gravestone are 1764-1838.
Pierce's 1897 Batchelder History says this Benjamin is the son of Samuel and that his wife's maiden name was Newton. Brage's 1985 update of the Pierce book leaves my relatives out.
This Batchelder line went forward primarily in the women.
I have found one male line from Benjamin.
Benjamin's son Daniel D. Batchelder married esther Wetmore. They had one son before Daniel died.
Son William N. Batchelder (1833-1903)had two wives and at least eight children.

Charles Batchelder, b.1890, son of Elroy/Louise, lived Rensselaer Co., NY

I have an original postcard photograph of “Charles Batchelder”, signed by him, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was mailed on July 18, 1912 from Troy, NY to a Mr. Jack Morris, North Bennington, VT. He looks to be about age 21 in the photo.

I found a Charles P. Batchelder in the 1900 census for Lansingburgh, Rensselaer Co., NY, showing birthdate of Mar 1890, and son of Elroy and Louise Batchelder. In 1912, he would have been 22, which matches the man in the photo.

There is, however, another Charles Batcheldor (with an o) living in 1910 in Troy (Rensselaer Co.) NY, age 36, which would make him 38 in 1912; he was son of Lucia. This is the same Charles Batcheldor who was in the 1900 census for Lansingburgh (Rensselaer Co.) NY, age 25 and single, son of Lanso and Lucia Batcheldor. This man, born in about 1874 is not the man in the photo I have.

I have no connection to this family but wanted to share this information as this would be impossible to come by and I know personally how helpful this can be. It is from the book "Vital Records of St. George, Maine". Included in there is an 1895 Town Census. In most cases they give ACTUAL birth dates AND also in most cases, they give the wife’s maiden name. Apparently they’re not all in alphabetical order, so I may be adding to this, so here goes:

I am researching the Cossey family. Henrietta Batchelder b. ca 1838, married Morris S. Cossey on 05 May 1858, in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls) NY. She is, I believe, a daughter of Charles and Eunice Batchelder. I think she is the child who is enumerated as "Amer. H." with Charles and Eunice in 1850. In 1860 Henrietta and her husband are enumerated with Isaac and his wife Mary and daughter Hattie, in Kingsbury, NY. Morris and Henrietta later have real estate dealings with Charles and William Batchelder.
Charles and Eunice Batchelder are buried in Union Cemetery, Fort Edward, Washington, NY; as are Henrietta and Morris.
I would be glad to know more about Charles and Eunice and their parents, and happy to share on Henrietta and descendants.

Simon Batchelder (B. 1758) married Rachel Johnson (b. Nov. 14 1756, d. Jan. 5, 1830). They were married apr 4 1778. They were from Northwood, NH.
Their son Simon Batchelder (B. Feb 28 1786) maried Hannah Waldron (b. Apr 11 1795 Barrington, NH. D. Aug 8 1853, Northwood, NH) They were married May 29 1825 in Northwood.
I have their names and dates but no info on their ancestry. If anyone knows their parents I would greatly appreciate the infomation.

GEORGE AIKEN BATCHELDER

BATCHELDER, GEORGE AIKEN, Vice President E. H. Rollins & Sons, Bonds, San Francisco, California, was born in that city April 13, 1860, the son of Joseph Moody Batchelder and Elizabeth (Aiken) Batchelder. He married Mary Whittemore Kittredge, daughter of Jonathan Kittredge, a California pioneer, in San Francisco, March 19, 1885, and two children were born to them, Doris Elizabeth (Mrs. De Lancy Lewis) and Kittredge Batchelder.

Mr. Batchelder comes in direct descent through eight generations from the Reverend Stephen Batchiler of Hampshire, England, who landed in Boston from the William and Francis, June, 1632.

Oliver Wendell Holmes speaks of the Reverend Stephen as that terrible old sinner and ancestor of great men. There has been some controversy as to the fitness of the first distinction, but of the second there can be no doubt. Among his well-known descendants are Daniel Webster, orator; John Greenleaf Whittier, poet; General Benjamin F. Butler, soldier and lawyer, Wm. Pitt Fessenden, statement; Caleb Cushing, diplomat; General R. N. Batchelder, Grants Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac, and many others of lesser note. George Aiken inherited his wanderlust from the Reverend Stephen, who took his B. A. at St. John College, Oxford, in 1586, afterwards lived in Holland and England, and sailed for America in 1632, after receiving from Charles I a grant of arms, notable as one of the few given for services performed in America. He returned to England, dying in 1660, in the one hundredth year of his age.

George A. Batchelders mothers family came from Londonderry, in the north of Ireland, in 1660. His forbears proved their patriotism in the Colonial, the Revolutionary and the Civil wars.

Joseph M. Batchelder reached California in 1850, but went to China in the sixties and died of sunstroke at Miyanosta, Japan, in 1893. He raised the sunken steamship Ajax, which had blocked the river at Shanghai; built the first oceangoing steamship constructed in China, the Yangtzi, and was shipowner, transporting the troops of the Mikado in the war with the Tycoon in 1869.

Mr. Batchelders education has been varied and somewhat cosmopolitan. In 1866-67 he attended a private school in Shanghai, China; in 1868 a public school in New Hampshire; the Mount Pleasant Academy, Amherst, Massachusetts, 1869-70; Allens English and classical School, West Newton, Massachusetts, 1871-73; the Japanese Government Business School and the University of Tokio 1874-79, and at the Columbia Law School, Washington, D. C., in 1882-83. This extensive schooling was supplemented by traveling when pirates were afloat and traveling was not merely tripping in express trains and floating hotels, all of which combined to broaden his viewpoints. A three months voyage to Shanghai, via Honolulu and Foochow, on the barque Valetta, Captain Cavanaugh, in 1866; a cruise in a private yacht through the Inland Sea of Japan, in 1867, while the Tycoon still reigned; a return to San Francisco in March, 1868, on the China, Captain Cobb, with Anson Burlingameâ€™s first Chinese Embassy; back to Massachusetts via Panama in the same year, thence to Japan again in 1873 on the America, Captain Freeman, and from 1873 to 1880 traveling, attending school in Tokyo and acting as Assistant Secretary at the United States Legation, form a kaleidoscopic record that suggests a course of moving-picture shows. An official touch is added by the fact that the American Government rented, for ten years, as its Legation in Japan, the residence of Mr. Batchelders father.

The roving spirit again seized Mr. Batchelder in 1897 and sent him to Europe in that year; again, in 1902, to the South Seas, and Tahiti in 1904, and around the world in 1907-08.

Mr. Batchelders active business life began in 1880, when he entered the Quartermasters Depot, U. S. A., in San Francisco, and rose in two years to the post of chief clerk of the depot. From 1882 to 1883 he was a clerk in the War Department at Washington, and in October of the latter year he became treasurer of the Dakota Investment Company at Grand Forks in the Red River Valley of the then Territory of Dakota.

In 1885 he became an officer of the corporation of E. H. Rollins & Sons as Western manager, and in 1892 went to Denver, Colorado, to take charge of its business there. Two years later, in 1894, he opened the San Francisco branch of the house, which thereby became the pioneer bond house of the Pacific Coast. Since that date he has placed more than thirty millions of outside capital in California municipalities and corporations.

In 1894 Mr. Batchelder introduced on this Coast the business of dealing solely in municipal and corporation bonds. The San Francisco office force of E. H. Rollins & Sons consisted of a bookkeeper and a stenographer, with a local business of perhaps $500,000 annual volume. Today the establishment embraces twenty-six, with a volume of some $11,000,000 annually. It was not until 1905 that the second bond house was established in San Francisco, since which time some half a dozen other houses have been added.

Mr. Batchelder has been a director of numerous corporations in various States, and among these his directorship of the Bay Counties Power Company, which broke all previous records for long-distance transmission of electric power, and that of the Western Pacific Railway, the first railroad to break into California against the will of the Southern Pacific, are those in which he took greatest pride, officially speaking.

After the Continental rather than the American custom, he retired from active business at the age of 50. He is now, he says, taking life easy after the English and Japanese modes, enjoying his home and giving as much time as he can spare therefrom to certain necessary business interests and to his clubs and societies. Of the latter he has a varied assortment. Among them: The Society of Colonial Wars, D.C., the Bohemian Club, the Pacific Union Club, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, California Commandery, and the Menlo Country Club.

John Batchelder of Nonnington Kent, b1753

My mother is from a family of Batchelders who have lived in the Sandwich, Canterbury, Dover area of East Kent for many generations, the Batchelder pedigree has been well researched and documented back to a John Batchelder who lived in Nonnington from 1753ish to 1816, he was born we believe in the village of Chillenden a few miles north east of Nonnigton.

We are unable to trace the pedigree any further back, any clues as to from whom John Batchelder of Nonnington is decended would be greatly appreticated.

He married a Sarah Rye her line is traced back to a Thomas Rye of Nonnigton b 1670ish.

I am looking for a Martha Batchelder that married a Ernest Wood in Haverhill MA. They had one son Leon Wood. I know he was in a hospital in the 20's and nothing after that. I know Ernest got a divorce from Martha in 1924ish but do not know what happened to Martha or Leon after that.
