I knew about him being in the army during the war. All about north Africa and Sicily and Italy. We tried to persuade him to go back to Italy when he retired but all he said was "Its full of mud huts".

Do you know anything else - have you found him on 1911 cencus, and why all the name changes.

I'm not a member anymore so am a bit restricted to what I can find out.

It would appear that we are the 'long lost cousins" of legend

As regards 'Ben' looking at other threads you appear to have all the information that we have.

The only things I can add is a little more about his army service (and that is a bit sketchy until I get his army records). As best as I can judge he was in the royal army service corps attached to a field ambulance unit. He served in North Africa possibly from as early as 1940 then Sicily and then in Italy until the end of the war. At some point (summer 45?) he was in Venice as he commented once that "Venice stunk"
He was wounded at least once as he still had a bit of shrapnel in the back of his hand when he died.

William John Bate of Tettenhall, Staffordshire

Hi, does anyone have any information about William John Bate (born St Ann, Soho, c. 1801, died Tettenhall 1858)? In the 1841 and 1851 census data he is living at Lane Green, Tettenhall, with his wife Ann (nee Lucas) and their children. His occupation is given as tutor, and on various of his children's marriage certificates he is described as 'linguist', 'professor of languages', 'schoolmaster' and (on his eldest daughter Eleanor's marriage certificate) 'gentleman'! According to the family history, he spoke seven languages and was estranged from his family. His cause of death in 1858 was recorded as 'disease of the liver' ...

I'd be really grateful to learn anything about this chap!

Fran

Hi Rose,

I have as Stephen Bate’s parents, Stephen Bate & Margaret Woolcock. They were married 08 May, 1771 in St. Mabyn. This Stephen passed away 27 Nov 1820 at age 74 and Margaret passed away 13 Jan 1831. They’re both buried in Egloshayle. Their children were (as best I could figure): Margaret (01-15-1775), Dorothy (11-9-1777), Margaret (01-28-1881), Stephen (02-29-1784), Thomas (05-27-1787), and Allice (12-11-1791).

Additional info:

Egloshayle, Cornwall, England Parish Records: 1600-1989

Baptisms/Christenings:
All of the following Baptisms listed the "abode" as Burlorne:

John son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate Sept 03, 1806
William son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate Dec 26, 1808
Thomas son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate June 2, 1811
Stephen son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate Dec 26, 1813
Robert son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate Feb 11, 1816
Francis son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate Sept 27, 1818
Elizabeth Daughter of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate	Sept 16, 1821
Robert son of Stephen & Elizabeth Bate July 27, 1823

Marriage record on the same microfilm roll listed Thomas Bate married Ann Blake 03 Dec 1835.

1841 Census: Egloshayle, Cornwall, England
Place (abode): Burlorne

Thomas Bate	30	Farmer
Ann "	30
Mary "	30
John "	4/12
Elizabeth "	15?
Robert "	15?

Another message I had posted on an ancestry site:
Since my original message, I have located all of Stephen & Elizabeth's children and where they have lived in the USA:
John, Stephen, Francis, Elizabeth, & Robert all lived in the Dyberry Twp in Wayne County, PA. William lived in the Clinton Twp in Wayne County, PA. And Thomas lived in Rockford, Illinois.
I was able to obtain Civil War pension records on Francis which contained information that proved his connection to his parents, Stephen & Elizabeth, in Egloshayle Parish, Cornwall, England.

Hope this is readable; I'm doing this in a hurry...

Good luck!
Dave Bates

hello. I am descended from Thomas Bate and Ann Blake. Thomas' parents being Stephen Bate and Elizabeth Bere. Around 1843 Thomas and Ann immigrated to Pennsylvania with their son William, who married Lorreta Knapp. Then in 1853 John S Bate was born. He married Lorreta's sister, Lucretia Knapp. She died and John married Annie A Seegert (of German descent}in 1891 in Illinois. Before 1910 all the American Bate's moved to San Bernardino, California where they stayed. They had John Daniel Bates, who was my Grandpa. He married Leota Mae Green of California, and they had a daughter Rose Louise and my Dad, John Daniel Bates, Jr. My dad married Emiko Tone from Okinawa. I have 2 brothers, John Stanly and William Harrison. I was born in 1955 and I have been working on this research for awhile. I'm guessing I have tons of relatives in Egloshayle!!!! I cannot find the parents of Stephen Bate. Any help there?
Rose Marie Bates-Fontanero

I see from your other thread that he was actually married to Karen. Found an entry in 1974 for a hutchinson but clicking on `find spouse` doesn`t work. I think because its been mis-transcribed as a reverse search for Karen Hutchison shows the same marriage. Do you have the marriage cert? That should give a little more info on him, like fathers name and age i think? With that you might find his death cert, maybe the informant was a relative?

I traced my Bates line back, several years ago, and records are pretty scarce before 1780 or so.

It's been about 10 years since I've done much research. I did a timeline and plotted where my ancestors lived in Cornwall and the further back in time I went, the closer to Devon they lived.

Without more records, it's just a guess where they originated from.

I have a picture in B&W of the Bate Crest, seems it is the same one as has been described here. I found out that Yorkshire did seem to be an area where the early Bate name was found most commonly. Does anyone know if they were of Saxon origin? Most of my ancestors who we can trace back about 300 years seem to have lived in Cornwall England. There are other theories of the origin of the name besides that of Bartholomew. The Italian name for Abbott is Abate, and there is the French name of Labate. I cannot say anything about Whorlton Castle. Our oldest known
Bate ancestor was John Bate from Cornwall, who married a Peggy Whiting, I have most of the lineages from that union.

Tina,
Nice to hear from you, Cuz! I would have contacted you sooner but I never got a reply notification from the Ancestry site until now. ??

I would be grateful to get some info concerning my grandfather's (George Guy Franklin Hyson) family since he died tragically when mother (Violet Hyson) was young. As a consequence I never knew him. I just recently got a copy of his WWI draft card as a result of researching mother’s ancestry which I just started. Her background will be rather difficult to track especially her American Indian heritage.

So far I have only been able to trace the Bate surname back to circa 1450; however, I’ve been able to trace some of the numerous maternal links of our family back into antiquity. These direct links include many persons of Royal and of Historical acclaim; e.g. Constantine I ‘the Great’, Emperor of Rome (268 – 337) and etc. I've listed many of these individuals in the first part of an Article I put together several years ago named, "The Bate Family of England, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky". Part I includes brief narratives of those living in the years 1448 through 1836.
I'm currently working on part II which will include abstracts of Great Grandfather John Throckmorton, Grandfather J.W., father Langston F. and me. I hope to have this completed by this year or next year at the latest.

Now that I have your e-mail address I’ll get with you directly to exchange the other information that you mentioned. Of course you may have any family information that I have.

My e-mail address is ken_bate07@comcast.net
My best to all !!
Hi Kenneth,
It's been a while. I am anxious to read your latest Bate family research. I have research to share.

Also, I have a copy of an old family photo. I think it was taken in Danville, Ky. upon the death of "Papa" Bate. The photo includes my grandfather, your uncle "Willie" and his four siblings... Your father, Langston, uncle Clarance, aunts Vivian Bate Peeler and Helen...Bausman?

You would be my second cousin and first cousin to my mother and her siblings, Camille I. Bate, John W. Bate III, Kenneth L. Bate, and Randle H.

From my researches into my surname it became clear that it is quite common for the 's' to appear and disappear from the surname in the BMD, parish and census records.

I think it became fixed when people became increasingly literate and could express which spelling they favoured. Before that people had to depend on spelling ability of the officiating person, not knowing what they had written.

I have Bate and Bates branches on my tree.

If you can confirm other names, father, mother and siblings across the various census records then you can be confident. Occupations and places of birth will help too.

Dave

Does anyone know if Bate and Bates would be the same? William H Bates was my great grandfather from Dundee, Scotland born in 1859. On the 1861, 1871 Scottish census, his name is spelled Bate. He came to Chicago in 1886 and the 1900 census was Bates. I just want to make sure I have the right person! Thanks for any help.

Hi folks.

Can you explain the Himley connection as I have seen it on trees but I can see no documentation to back it up. I'd love to get some solid confirmation.

Joseph appears in the 1841 census but has died before the 1851 where we would have a place of birth. The 1821 marriage entry has no real data for parentage either.

I know their son Benjamin spent some time over that part of south Staffordshire Worcestershire when he married Emily. Perhaps Edwin met Mary Ann (Wassell) Plant there too.

Dave

Has anyone worked on Sarah Bate's genealogy? Some sites claim that she was the daughter of Clement and Ann ( Dalrymple) Bates. She was born abt 1632. Some sites say she was born in Lydd Kent (where the Bates family came from) and some say she was born in Massachusettes. One site had execerpts from Clement Bates'will and there was no mention of a daughter Sarah. And if that is not her line, who are possible parents for her? Thanks- Diane

Hi. Yvonne
I have this marriage entry for them. As you say it lists her father as J. Hodgkins. (NOTE: There is one other Isaiah Bate who was baptised in Wolverhampton 1820 with a Joseph Bate as his father.)

30/0113
27 Dec 1841
Isaiah Bates 20 b x Miner Wolverhampton J.Bates Maltster &
Sophia Hodgkins 20 s x Wolverhampton J.Hodgkins Miner
B J.Perkins & J.Biddulph jr.

George Cottom, St.Peters

This type of entry is common as Cheslyn Hay and Gt Wyrley was still under St Peters Collegate Church in Wolverhampton for weddings. Although baptisms at Cannock were the usual arrangement.

There isn't a an entry in the Methodist records for CH and GW. There is one baptism entry in the IGI for a Sophia born around 1823 (according to the 51 census DOB) that is close phonetically.

SOPHIA HODSKISS
20 APR 1823 Cannock, Stafford, England
Mother: THEODOSIA HODSKISS
St Luke Cannock.

Also there is an entry for Elizabeth Hodgekins who married Joseph Stokes on 27 Sept 1824 at Cannock.

Incidentally Isaiah Bate is/was one of my 2x Great grandfather Edwin Bate's older brothers.

Hope these help a bit. I'd like to find out too as These were all I had scrapped together.

Regards
Dave B
