Hi Mr Craig

I have Simon Bathgate and Margaret Clough/Cleugh in my family tree. I am directly descended through the Cleugh line that married into the Bathgate family, so I cannot help you with Simon Bathgate's father (1772-1852). He married Margaret Cleugh 6 Mar 1799 in Edinburgh. I could help in descent post this period.

My Alison Purves was born in 1723 to James Purves and Agnes Knox. Another of James and Agnes' children, Betty married into the Shiels family. Andrew Shiels is my 5x great grandfather. I don't know whether Alison married, by the sounds of your request, she must have.

I can't help with Simon Bathgate's parents or brothers and sisters I am afraid. I don't have any Aitchison's so we must have a different line of Shiel(s)
Sorry I can't be of more help
Denise

My grandfather, George Andrew Emrick was the son of George and Jessie Bathgate Emrick. George married Edna Mueller and had five daughters: Christina, Kathleen, Paula, Gretchen and Lisa. Edna and all five girls are still living in the Beaver County area. George died a couple of years ago and is buried with his parents in Grove Cemetery in New Brighton. Jessie Bathgate was my great grandmother. She remarried Charles Hershey after her husband's death. I believe she had one sibling, a brother named Arthur Andrew Bathgate. Some of the census records also show Ethel and Nelson as siblings, however...according to my grandfather as he reported to my mother, Christina Emrick, Ethel and Nelson were actually Andrew Bathgate's grandchildren, their father was Arthur and their mother was Amelia. After Arthur died of a ruptured appendix and Amelia had been deceased for a number of years, Nelson and Ethel went to live with their grandfather, Andrew Beatie "Pete" Bathgate. Nelson and Ethel had two additional siblings: Raymond and Ruth. Raymond went to live with some other relatives, possibly with the Emrick family, and Ruth was adopted by a couple who lived in Sewickley and we think later married a Gleason. My mom can not remember his first name though. I hope this helps!

Well Hello There

At last getting around to doing something useful or, is it, worthwhile with all the info I have gathered or been offered by my loving cousins :))
I have started from my mother and her siblings and am gradually moving back through the various generations, at the moment just about half way through the Robert B and Jean Hardie lot. 19 pages so far, it is not all words but lots of photographs, also using Gooogle Earth street view to find houses etc, which is quite interesting as many so far would appear to be the original buildings, in particular in Edinburgh.
The nudge to get me started was email convesations I have been having with Sandra (Bunny) Perryman in Australia; our respective mothers were sisters, her mother being Agnes Jean (Sheena) Bathgate.
I had a great hit just before Christmas, after extending my Ancestry subscription to cover the whole world a leaf came up against my maternal grandmother, Jean Bertram Grant/ Bathgate, which lead me to her death details, she was in Adelaide when she died, must have been visiting her son Robin, managed to get a copy of the certificate from the Adelaide NSW registry office. She died on the 27 July 1950. Beeen looking for that infromation for ages, like years.
I will drop you an email with other details.
Iain

Bathgate from Roxburghshire to Glenmorris, Ontario, Canada

Hello! My great-great-great grandmother was Isabella Bathgate (her married name, we don't know her original surname)who was born in Roxburghshire about 1769 and died in Glenmorris, Ont in 1862.

Isabella and her two sons (first names unknown) emigrated to Canada circa 1827. There are records of all 3 being in Galt, Ontario.

Isabella also had 2 daughters about whom I know much more, including their descendants:
1. Helen (1807-1842)married John Hall (1800-1854) - They lived in Jedburgh, Dumfries, Ontario.
2. Isabella (1805-1862)married James Smith (1800-1874)They farmed near Glenmorris, Ontario.

The 1851 Canadian census has a record for Isabella, living with the Smiths who, according to family records, arrived in Canada in 1834 - and took over the running of the Bathgate farm. Her obituary notice describes her as the last of family of 11.

Would anyone out there have heard of this branch of the Bathgates? In particular, would you know anything about Isabella's sons - where did they go post 1827? what were their first names?

Many thanks!
Mary Harrison

These are my gg grandparents. Their Son Alexander married Charlotte Eupemia Reid whose daughter Lizzie Reid Bathgate was my grandmother. She died in 1940 in Saskatooon when my dad was 9. She married Alexander Huggan who died in 1958 also in Saskatoon. My grandparents were the only family who came to Canada except for two of her cousins, Harry and Robert Bathgate whose parents, I believe, were Henry and Eleanor Davidson. My grandmother and Henry and Roberts dad's were brothers. My dad, who passed away two years ago, knew a lot more of this but my mom has over the years done quite a bit of research with dad's help. If you would like to let me know what you would like to know, I can send you what we have on the Bathgate line.
Kathleen

Unfortunately William Bathgate mislead me in the census material, he stated different places of birth, the earlier ones being Cork, Ireland, later on probably preferring not to be Irish due to political situation, he changed his birthplace to Haddington, Scotland. He's led me a merry dance, but I've now discovered that he was baptised in 1824 at Brigown, County Cork, which ties in nicely with his son John Shapland Bathgate's birth certificate stating he was born at Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland. The monastery of Brigown gives its name to two-thirds of the modern parish of Mitchelstown.

His parents were William & Jane Bathgate - I can't findd them in Irish marriages, births or deaths, so they have to come from Scotland - I would assume, so there could still be a link between us further back maybe.

So I'm know seeking details of his parents William & Jane Bathgate, in case you know of anyone researching these names in the family.

I have my family tree on my website at

www.btinternet.com/~ray.axford

please contact me if you find a link there.

regards
Doreen

Robert Bathgate, of Rochester, PA, USA, b Pittsburgh USA c1887

My grandfather was Robert Bathgate of Rochester PA. According to his obituary (I have a copy of this from the Beaver County Times)he was born in Pittsburgh, PA c. 1887. He died in November 1936 (age 49) in Rochester, PA. He worked for over 31 years for the PA Railroad at Conway Yards (in Conway PA). The 1936 obituary lists 3 surviving brothers, William of Branchville NJ, Archie of Newark NJ, Peter of Conway PA, and 1 surviving sister, Mrs. William Donaldson of Mays Landing NJ - in addition his widow, Margaret Bloodhart Bathgate and 2 children, William Wallace Bathgate (my father) and Mrs. Paul Robinson (Madeline).

I remember meeting Uncle Pete and his daughter, Jessie Emerick but am not familiar with any of the other 3 children listed for Pete. Pete worked for/retired from Conway Yards also.

Would love to have any information re Robert Bathgate's family. Not too many stories about that side of the family, and would love to fill in the gaps. I was told that Robert was born in the USA, but his brothers were all born in Scotland.

Anything you could send would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Robert for the Information. Here is what I have:
My father Nelson Leroy Bathgate was in the Korean War. And he is the oldest of Five children. He had five girls, Me, Irene Amelia, Jessie Ganentte, Nena Marie,Peggy Ann and Linda Lee. His brothers and sisters are:
Raymond, Johnny, Ethel and Ruth Bathgate.
Raymond died in las vegas Nevada two years ago. And I found that my aunt ethel died a while back also when I did a surname search. Johnny and ruth both died also but not sure when.I never met them as they died before I was born. As my mother dont talk about it. She only met them once when she came to the states with my dad after leaving korea. I know that my aunt ethel had two sons, artie and the other I cant remember.
My sister peggy knows more then I do but if you would like to ask her any more questions you can contact her at her email address:
fubaredat40@aol.com.
Irene,

The children I listed for Andrew Beatty "Pete" Bathgate came from a typewritten list I got from Kathryn Gleason, that was in her mother's (Dorothy Krotje ms. Bathgate) home at the time of her death. It appears that she (Dorothy) wrote this out from personal memory for another family member some time ago. Anyway, I'll reproduce the pertinant portions here as best as email will allow:

.(PETE) ANDREW BEATY BATHGATE
.
......Sons Arthur - Nelson (in Korean War)
.
......Daughter Ethel - married Raymond (?)
.
..........."...Jessie - married George Emerick
..................^
..................|.....Son George Jr. - 2 children
..................|
..................|.....Daughter Ethel Marie (?)
..................|
..................---Daughter Virginia married James Waite

You'll have to replace all of those periods with spaces and view it with a fixed space font to get a good representation the letter. This message board seems to think that any number of spaces can be replaced by a single space!

If it does turn out that Andrew Beaty Bathgate (or his father, William Preston Molle Bathgate) is in your direct line, let me know and I can fill in another couple generations beyond that for you.

Good hunting!

Bob Bathgate

Andrew B. Bathgate b Carrington, Scotland 1879

I've got an Andrew Beatty Bathgate (b. 09 Jul 1879 Carrington SCT, d. Aug 1965 PA USA) as my g'g'uncle. My grandmother (and the rest of the family) used to refer to him as Uncle Pete. I have him listed as having four children: Jessie, Ethel, Nelson, and Arthur. Andrew Beatty Bathgate would have been in Allegheny county PA around 1885, was in Sussex county NJ by 1900, and I believe moved back to PA later on.

If it looks like this might be of interest, I'll have to do a little digging to get my source citations straight. I seem to remember that this was verbal info either from my grandmother Alice Bathgate (ms. Ferguson) or verbal info from Branchville NJ branch of the Bathgate family.

Oh, and just to see if anything clicks with the "uncle" hypothesis, all of the Bathgate siblings in birth order were:

Mary "Polly"
Archibald Preston (my g'grandfather)
Susan
Andrew Beatty "Pete"
William
Jessie
Robert
Margaret

Even if this doesn't connect, keep me in mind in your correspondence - I'm looking at NJ/PA Bathgates as well!

Bob Bathgate
