Re: Batterson's of Fairfield, CT

Paul,
How nice to hear from you. I have yet to find records that say Mahala and Sarah Batterson are the daughters of William and Abigail....altho we know they are.
I do have William's will listing Sarah and others. Naturally Mahala is not listed as she pre-deceased William. I also have Mahala's death record which lists William, but doesn't even say William "A", which is how he is listed on all docs that I have seen. Absolutely nothing on Abigail.

Now then. About the Native American connection. I, too, have been told by family members, that we are descended from Native Americans. I've been trying to prove all of this for years. Not sure if it's the Batterson's or the Barnes, however, I suspect the Barnes. I do have a picture of Lewis Barnes and his wife, Mahala. I can't find much on him.

If we can do more "talking", why don't you just email me directly?
Sandon@verizon.net

I have a good deal of information, but nothing concrete to prove that Mahala is the daughter of Wm and Abigail.

Eagerly awaiting.
Sandy
Re: Batterson's of Fairfield, CT

Sandy,
I was recently engaged by a person with Barnes/Batterson ancestry, also through Mahala Batterson. Since I live in Connecticut I tried doing some of my own digging. In the Wilton CT town records I found the death of "Mahala Barnes, died March 16, 1871, age 39, born Westport, died of pneumonia, father, William Batterson." (VR 1867-1880, p. 39) Since she had given birth seven days before to her 12th child with Lewis Barnes, I assume that fact contributed to her death.
The record does not mention her mother's name, but I have seen via rootsweb what looks like a complete list of children born to William Batterson and Louisa Allen, so I am assuming her mother was Abigail Baker - Westport had no relevant records.
When I went to the Wilton Library, I was shown the file on Barnes with your 1993 letter. My client descends through Lewis and Mahala's son Albert. She is not really concerned with Colonial ancestry but has a family story that there was Native American ancestry in that line - though I have seen nothing yet that would indicate such. I have also found info in Norwalk records that elaborate on some of the known Barnes's, if you are interested.
Paul Keroack, Stratford CT

I don't know if she is related I haven't across her name. But that does'nt mean she isn't because I think all the Batterson in the United State's are related one way or another. If you come across a Caleb Batterson or Elizabeth B. Batterson in your tree then they are related because they are my grandparents I forget how many Greats though I think 4th and 5th grandparent's.
Lisa

I know they didn't have any children together but both had children from their previous marriages. I know some information on Roxa's side but not on Kingsburys. I am still trying to put all the pieces together on Roxa so I thought I would try to figure out more on her 2nd husbands side, in hopes that it will help. I would love any information you are willing to share. I can give you all the information I have about Roxa if you would like it. Thank you again.
Amy,

I know that Adeline had a few sisters. Roxa doesn't sound familiar. Would you like me to send you Adeline's obituary? Didn't know if it would fill a space for you. Adeline's second husband was a man by the name John Outman. I think she and Marcus actually got a divorce. I wonder how you would do that in the 1800's? I would love to get a copy of the divorce papers if they even exist. Hmmm... Reply if you'd like and thanks for the reply!

I don't think it is too confusing. My Grandmother gave me a few Funeral Cards and Roxa's happened to be one of them. I hope this information can also help someone else. It gives the information as the following (for others reference)

Mrs. Roxa L. Batterson
Date of Birth: May 5, 1890 (doesn't state it but she was
born in Sherwood, MI, according to my
grandmother)
Date of passing: Dec 5, 1965 Sherwood Michigan
Services Held: 1:30pm Tuesday Dec 7, 1965 at Spencer
Funeral Home
Officiating Clergy: Dr. L.D.
All the Batterson's involved in my family history were in Michigan also. Could you elaborate on the exact location? My GGG Grandmother was Adeline Batterson who married Marcus Curtis. They had my GG Grandmother, and she had my Grandfather who now lives in Kalamazoo Michigan. Maybe we have a connection that would be helpful to both of us?
Jodi VanEngen-Walder
jodiwalder@comcast.net

My Great-Grandmother, was the daughter of Adeline Batterson. Adeline Batterson was one of the daughters of Kingsbury Batterson. Adeline's first husband, Marcus Curtis was the father of my GG Grandmother. My GG Grandmother's first name was sort of a mystery. It was always spelled differently. Survilla, Survellie, Swrvila, etc... On her grave stone in Kalamazoo Michigan It is Survellie B.(etsy) Wellington. She was married the first time to Henry Wilks and after she was widowed, she married my GG Grandfather Oran Wellington. They then had my Grand Father. I hope this doesn't seem too confusing. If there is anything I can do for you let me know.
Jodi VanEngen-Walder
jodiwalder@comcast.net
Max, I have recently learned that my son-in-law's great-great-grandparents lived in the Selma area at least in 1873. They are Adolphus and Rebecca Gray Batterson. They had children Monroe "Bud", William A. "Art", Edward, Ella, and Amanda. They moved to Rock Island IL at some point as one son at least was born there in 1880.
He had tried to quiz his aunt and uncle, but they don't seem to know or want to discuss this side of the family.
Do these names look familiar to you? Tim's middle name is Monroe. "Bud" was Tim's grandfather's dad. Tim thought they had come from IL not knowing that there was any connection to IA until his grandfather Arthur Batterson married Grace Batterson. They assumed they had met when he worked on the railroad. Now we are really puzzled....Pat Howk
