Hi,
My family are Battistes, who settled in the Caribbean. The rumor is that we originated from Italy. I have always "felt" Italian and never more at home than when I am visiting Italy. Can you please share with me what you know about the Battistes from Italy and their migration to the Americas?

Also, while on the train in Italy we zipped through a town named "Battistini.". Perhaps this town is connected to the Battiste family.

Thanks for your help,

Your ?cousin? :-)

I've been trying to locate the sister of my boyfriend, Donald W Battiste now for the past 10 years without any luck. She was engaged to an Edward Johnson who died in service in 1965. Edward went to Union High School in Union New Jersey. Since that time, Don believes she's been married at least a couple of times. The last names are listed above. Not sure how the spelling of them went. She was last seen by her brother, Don in the early 70's when he and she moved to the east coast of Florida. I've tried talking to people that may have graduated but without any luck. Her brother is very ill and Barbara would be his only living blood relative. Any info at all, please contact ziggy102@bellsouth.net. Time is of the essence.

Deborah,

Like you, I am searching for anyone with the last name Battiste. I was told by my late father, Clarence Battiste, that his father came from Manchionel located in Port Land. His father name was Israel Battiste and I was told that the family came from Cuba to Jamaica. I am on a quest to learn more about my family and possible find brothers and sisters of my late father. I found you on facebook and spoke with your father in Jamaica. I believe his name is Leslie and his wife is Ina Battiste. I live in the USA and hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Carlene Battiste-Downie

She was married at one time to someone with the last name "Tomasso" and he thinks went with someone else with the last name "Winer". He believes she moved to Florida sometime but there's no records at all on her. He hasn't seen or heard from her since 1978 and would like to connect once again after all these years.

The obit for Benjamin Z. Deakle, if you don't have it, is in Jun 23, 1926, page 87. I think it's the Mobile Register. I have a partial copy of this page because of my relative. Anyway, it says he's buried in Union Church Cemetery. It says he has four daughters, two sons, one brother, one sister, six grandchildren.

Any Battist (under any spelling)that was born/or resided
in Canada could possibly be Abnaki. If regular research
doesnt come up with anything on yours, try this site to
see if you can make a connection this way:
http://www.tolatsga.org/aben.html and
http://www.avcnet.org/ne-do-ba/menu_srp.html
you can email the source of the latter.

Battiste-Battist

I have found a new clue that may shed new light on those
who are searching for John Battist and all the variant
spellings. Since it has been handed down to me in my
family lore that I have Indian ancestors, this new clue
may be of some value. I have never found my Indian
ancestor. Under the title "Wabanaki Warriors Revoluntionary
War" are listed the following: Battis, John (Jean Baptiste)
MicMac; Battist John (Jean Baptiste)homeland: StFrancis PQ, Abnaki Indian Ranger Co.
1780-81 and there is a third listed as Batis, John (Jean Baptiste) homeland Maine,
Maliseet tribe. I have no idea at this moment how to research the
Abnakis in Canada...but I do find the above interesting.

John Battiste/Battease
I am a descendant of an elusive John Batease, coming down
from his son Joseph who married Laura Westcott. I have been
searching this name for over 30 years. There are two major
problems that hinder my search. (1)If John was from Montreal, Canada as family lore says, then in such
case his
name may well have been Jean-Baptiste (something) with the
surname being dropped altogether when he settled in Vermont.
(2)family lore also said our name was pronounced Bat' ease and not Bat teese'. Now if you say Batease
under the first
pronounciation fast, you come up with surname Bettys. Not to
mention every spelling conceivable inbetween and to give a few, Battice, Battese, Battis, Bettis etc. and
possibly Bettys. Joseph had a son named Joseph Andrew...who went by
the name Andrew. There was an Andrew Bettys in Vermont in the early 1800s. My John
(Jean?)supposedly left a family in
Montreal and came to Vermont and married two more times. I know of two children, who are half-bro/sis,
Joseph and Betsy.
Joseph was born 1805-09 Vermont and Betsey was younger and born in Burlington, Vermont. She
married Nathan Wescott.
