Death of Robert Battle

From the Kinston Free Press, newspaper of Kinston, NC
29 Nov 1898

Robert BATTLE, a son of the late J.J. BATTLE, of Edgecombe, was killed at South Rocky Mount Friday. Mr. BATTLE was an employee of the railroad and while doing some duty connected with the shifting engine was thrown down and dragged a considerable distance by the engine. His neck was broken: except for this his injuries would not have been fatal. He was about 25 years of age.

Taneya
Kinston Free Press Blog - http://kinstonfreepress.wordpress.com
African American BATTLE family of Edgecombe Cty/Rocky Mt., NC

There are so many Battle lines (pun unintended) that I am confused. The oldest member of my AfrAm Battle family is Charles Battle, who was born ca 1890s. He was married first to Manda Stallion Battle and then to Hattie Brown Battle. He died in 1964 (?) in Rocky Mount. His children attended first the Pittman Grove School and then the Hickory View School, if that information is of any help. I am interested in learning new information about him and other ancestors and am also interested in learning about any possible plantation connection from which the surname originates. Any information would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

THANK YOU,
Jacqueline

Elisha Battle and Rev. Josiah Battle (newspaper obit for children, 1820)

I am hopeful someone can tell me who the families were of the children mentioned below in a very sad obituary?

November 17, 1820: Star Newspaper, NC: Communication [but location not given]: "DIED: On Friday Last, HARDY HARRIS BATTLE, son of the late JOSIAH BATTLE of this county, aged ten years. [And] In Powelton, Geo., on the 25th ultimo, MARTHA JANE BATTLE, infant daughter of the Rev. ELISHA BATTLE of that place, aged three years. Both of these subjects, a few weeks ago, were healthy and promising children, the delight and comfort of their parents, whose joys are now turned into mourning. The former was taken with an inflammation of the lungs, of unusual violence; and though every effort was made for his relief by his physician, the symptoms held out for more than 20 days, during the great part of which time the feelings of his friends were suspended between hopes and fears. The latter was supposed to be an inflammation of the brain, which though short, was violent and excruciating, affording but little opportunity for the exertion of medical skill, but for the time no effort was spared. She died on the 5th day after the attack. For parents to be thus bereft of a child, at this lovely age, is affecting beyond measure – But there is a source of comfort, for says our Saviour, suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not – of such is the kingdom of heaven. In viewing an infant traveling through the vale of death, how many precious thoughts present themselves. Jesus has a large family of children, united by the ties of love; he has in a particular manner manifested his love to them – and he has all the power – has the keys of death and hell. Has he not told them he would not forsake them? Has he not laid down his life for them? Says the weeping mother, how glad would I have been to have borne their pain – Jesus did carry our sins and bear our sorrows. He knows, and will do, what is best – with this belief we may extract honey from the gall – comfort from our afflictions. The plant is safely sheltered before the storm to come.”

As an aside, I am a descendant of Elisha Battle [m. Eliz Ruth Sumner] but he is not of this generation; and of Josiah Davis Battle, but of course he wasn't born until 1811.

Any help appreciated. Best, Virginia Sanders-Mylius

Battle's of Alabama

Hi from the Battle's in Illinois. I am helping my husband search for his ancestors. Here is what we have so far - remember we just started.

Walker Jack Battle born in Alabama around the 1860's possibly Birmingham. Don't know his wife's name. Had four children that we know of. Walker died in his early 30's.

Carr E. Battle born about 1892 in Byhalia MS died in 1959
Earl Battle - was in WWI
Roy Battle - never married
Mittie - never married - died around the age of 33

Carr E Battle married Francis King (who I think was adopted by a Williams family in Osceola, Arkansas) She had 2 sisters Rosalie King Dobbs and Fantine Cowsert.

Carr and Francis had 7 children:

Carr E, Jr - born 1931 in Mississippi
John T. Battle - born 1933 in Mississippi
William Battle - born 1935
Calvin Earl Battle - born 1937
Carrie Elizabeth - born in 1938 ?
Claude Earl Battle - born in 1940
Emery Francis Battle - born in 1942 or 1943

If any of this sounds familiar with anyone please contact us. We would love to find information on Walker Jack Battle and any relatives he may have. Please email us at tbattle@soltec.net if you have any info. Thanks for reading this and have a great day. Tammy Battle

17 oct 2006
at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=riceedm...
we present more evidence about birth of Catherine (or Katherine) Smith, who in 1765 in Barre MA married Makepeace Gates born 1735:
i.e. evidence that the bride Catherine was born 21 apr 1746 Sherborn, Middlesex Co., MA ----as daughter of Nathaniel Smith born 1723 Dedham, Norfolk Co. , MA and his wife Abigail Battelle (or less commonly Battle) born 1721 Dedham , Norfolk Co. MA --who married 1745 in Dedham, Norfolk Co. MA

The strongest evidence is chronological, that the grave record of Nathaniel [Sr] in Barre MA lists the right age at death, for the above Nathaniel Smith born 1723 [Nathaniel is listed in Catherine's 1765 Barre MA marriage as her father]. In 1770, Abigail Smith, wife of Nathaniel, died in Barre MA vital records.

Catherine Smith 's apparent brothers in the Barre MA vital records of deaths were born a few years after her 1746 birth date, somewhat confirming that the above 1745 marriage record could well apply the the above Nathaniel and Abigail Smith who died in Barre MA

I am looking for my great, great grandmother who was married to James Richmond Lowrie in the 1800s. They had a daugter born in the 1800s in Pontitoc, Mississippi. She was born October 15, 1854. I am trying to trace Arabella's geneology. The daugter was named Louise Antonette Lowrie. I know she is in the Battle family because my mother had her DAR done and it went back to Elisha Battle. I do not have these traced papers and don't know what happened to them.

William Battle m. Parnella French 1718 Partner in New Castle Partner with William Houston?

All,

I own a copy of the thesis by William R. Cario titled, "Anglicization in a 'Frenchified, Scotchified, Dutchified Place': New Castle Delaware, 1690 -1750". On page 136 appears the following text:

"Anthony Howston moved from London to take over his brother's business after 1707; during the next decade William Battell arrived in town, married a daughter of John French, and took over some of his mercantile operations."

The Anthony Houston (Howston) referenced above is my 7th great-grandfather and I believe that the William Battle [Battell] referenced here could be William Battle born about 1696 who married Parnella French on 29 June, 1718 at the Immanuel Church in New Castle. My question is, do you know anything about the apparent partnership between Anthony Houston and William Battle referenced above?

I also have a reference to a 10 May 1722 land transaction in New Castle for Anthony Houston that contains a William Battle signature.

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Texas

Richard J. Battle Obituary - Atlanta, GA 1917

12 February 1917 Atlanta (GA) Constitution, p. 1

Captain Richard J. Battle, one of the oldest traveling salesmen of Atlanta, who was badly injured when hit by a Ponce de Leon avenue street car Friday morning, died Sunday at the residence, 288 East North avenue.

According to parties who witnessed the accident Friday morning, Captain Battle was crossing Peachtree street to board an incoming street car when he was hit by an outgoing Ponce de Leon car. He was rushed to his home following the accident and placed under the care of physicians, but from the first it was known that his injuries would probably prove fatal.

Captain Battle was 71 years old and had been a traveling salesman for many years. He moved here with his family twelve years ago from Denver, Colo. Shortly prior to his death he was division traveling manager for the Cudahy Packing company and the American Tobacco company.

Captain Battle entered the civil war as a midshipman in the confederate navy and was advanced rapidly before the war was over. He was mentioned several times in the reports for his bravery and his promotion to captaincy came as a result of such mention.

The deceased is survived by his widow, two sons, Richard J. Jr., and Wingate, and one daughter, Miss Cullen. The funeral will be held from the residence Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Can someone inform me about the surname of Battle, please!

When I lived in Costa Rica, I had some lovely conversations with some Battle or Battel cousins, and I was told this wonderful story that every Battle family always sent their first born son to sea in England, just like in the old days, every second son of Spain became a priest. This is an old name in the Deep South of the USA and I come across this name on occasion in my own tree, and I'm wondering about any legends and/or old stories that might give me a clue about the lost Caribbean History, and what happened between 1401 to 1601 in History. The other horrible complications is that the major libraries and universities in the United States blocks emails from inquiries and wants nothing to do with the general population of the United States in their little clicques, and ancestry.com has become very expensive and its websites minded by masters who are not fully aware of even the history of the local area. So, suddenly, there is a real problem on ancestry.com, the only real genealogy website on the internet, and it concerns me. But, if there is someone into history, genealogy, seafaring days, archaelogy, please get in touch with me, since I have to work from a little library that does not even have interlibrary loan benefits.

Thank you very much.

Dora Battle

I am looking for the parents of Dora MILLER born June,1859 somewhere in Georgia. Here is the information I have found on the 1900 census of the Hamilton County, Chattanooga, Tennessee: George MILLER was the deceased husband of Dora MILLER.
Dora MILLER born June, 1859 (head of houshold) 40yrs(widow).
Sofine MILLER born May,1882 (son) 18yrs
Fred MILLER born July, 1889 (son) 10yrs
Eugene MILLER born March, 1892 (son) 8yrs
Mary MILLER born October, 1898 (daughter) 1yr
Daniel WALKER born, 1849 Virginia (boarder) 59yrs

Between 1898 and 1901 Daniel WALKER maried Dora MILLER and they had a daughter born, 1901. and her name is Viola (WALKER) CLAY (Clay being her married name) She was known as Aunt Odie by family members. Dora is believed to be of Cherokee descent. I am also trying to find out if Dora Battle and Dora Miller are the same person. On the 1870 Census of Hamilton County,Tennessee, I see a Dora Battle, age eleven, listed as a domestic servant in the household of John M. Todd. She is listed as Mulatto, and also born in Georgia about 1859. The picture that I have of Dora Miller, shows that she is definitely of mixed blood. Here is the rest of the info that I have on the Todd Family:
1870 Census, Hamilton County, Tennessee:
John M. Todd-age 47;Head of Household
Mary A. Todd-age 43;wife
Edgar G.Todd-age 19;son
Minnie M.Todd-age 6;daughter
Dora Battle-age 11; domestic servant
If you think you can connect with any of the people above Please contact me.

Fannie was a very special person in the home of Maggie Glynn Kevice (born 9 June 1870) and John Henry Kevice (born 01 Dec 1870). Fannie assisted in the loving care of their children and this is demonstrated in the way that little Mary Elois Kevice is leaning against her.

A traveling photographer appeared one day and Fannie took advantage of the opportunity to have a picture made with her three charges. The baby in her arms is Edwin Joseph Kevice (born 12 June 1906, Cairo, Alexander Co., IL) and was only a few months old when the picture was taken. Seated on a doll bed and holding her dolly is little Elizabeth Kevice (born 01 Dec 1904 in Nashville, TN). Standing and leaning against Fannie Battle's shoulder is Mary Elois Kevice (born 25 May 1901).

The Tuscola, IL submitter, M. J. Donnelly, is the daughter of Mary Kevice. Please reference that issue for further details. Hopefully, this "snippet" will provide just the right clue to a researcher.
