i found a 2001 post with 2 bad addresses for me.
I am descended from Stephen-Lucretia MATTHEWS BAWDEN. She was born and they were married in Perranuthnoe, Cornwall. That's the farthest I've gone with scant info. They had son Stephen 1755...no info on him. Then there was Stephen-Rebecca GILBERT/JELBERT in Redruth; then there was Stephen- Mary TERRILL in Redruth. Stephen was born 6 Apr 1812. Then they came to the US in 1860; then they had Stephen Douglas who married Mary Ella WOODWARD, they had Stephen PHELPS-Edna CAMERON HASKIN(S).
I am from the son of Stephen-Mary TERRILL BAWDEN...George Washington BAWDEN. He married Jennie ELDRIDGE, they had 3 sons: Albert, George Ray, Harry ELDRIDGE.
George Ray married Viola DUVALL and they had 2 sons: George Ray, Jr., and John DUVALL.
If any of these are in your tree, I'd love to email with you. I have 2 older email addresses that no longer work from 2001. This one is good or msg me here.

I am searching for William Bawden son of Henry and Elizabeth Bawden born 1847 in North Molton. I have him on the 1861 Census at age 16 years, living at Fore Street, with his maternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Webber. He was a mason's helper. Despite much searching I have been unable to find him after 1861. I have traced his brothers, James, and Joseph who is my direct ancestor.
Any help is appreciated
Winnifred

Collan Bawden was born in Gwennap St Day in Cornwall. His parents were Richard Bawden and Aurelia Kinsman. Richard Bawden is a dead end and I keep looking for a breakthrough. Aurelia Kinsman has an extensive tree due to lots of research by Kinsman genealogists in Cornwall. The English Census of 1841 has the Bawden family and Cornwall OPC has other parish records. I would be interested in anything else you find anything else on Jo Daviess County Illinois Bawden families as I am hoping one of them will help me find Richard's father.

She married Henry Sharp in 1873 and had 3 children: Henry Palmer Sharp, b.1874; Ellen Mary Sharp, b. 1876, d. 1962. married Samuel Bawden; William James Sharp, b. 1878, d. 1961.
ELIZABETH PALMER: b. 1843, Capel, Surrey, England.
It appears Caroline and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia on the same ship--The Gresham, and arrived in Hobsons Bay, Australia 22 Jun 1869. I have some info on Caroline's family, but none on Elizabeth's. I have one mention of Elizabeth, written by her niece, Ellen Mary Sharp Bawden, dated 1901, sent to a cousin in England.
Hello,
I'm researching the surname of LEE and have recently discovered that a Ellen LEE married a Thomas Richard or Rickard BAWDEN on 2nd October, 1883. Ellen's family were in the Kadina, Wallaroo, Moonta, Burra and Broken HIll areas (mining). I've also found that several sons of Ellen and Thomas BAWDEN served in WW2 and WW2. Ellen BAWDEN is buried in Centennial Park cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, with two daughters Margaret Ellen and Lilian. A son, Joseph Lee BAWDEN is commemorated in the rememberance wall at Centennial Park cemetery. Two other sons are buried in riverland town cemeteries of South Australia.
Its been some time since your posting in regard to the Bawden research, I hope you are still researching this name?

Kind regards
Marie
South Australia

I am desperately trying to find a record of Joseph Bawden born 1756 Westonzoyland, he married Betty Hellier of Othery and his son Thomas Bawden married Ann Canvin.
On the 1841 census there is a Joseph Bawden aged 85 living with Ann (widow) and Richard, a son of Ann and Thomas, but of course it doesn't give any relationship.
Any info would be much appreciated.

My Bawden family came from Redruth, and, although they had 2 sons named William in succession, 1 died on board ship btw NY and Southhampton, and the other died prior to this crossing.
This family in records also is transcribed as Bowden/Bowdin so I have the same problems. Co-incidentally, Stephen had a brother Henry, a carpenter, who migrated to Australia in the 1840s looking for better work opportunities.

Thanks for replying to my message.
My g.g.grandmothers parents were William Bawden from Bampton and Sarah Quick from Dulverton, they married in Tiverton. Bampton is approx 17 miles and Dulverton is approx 24 miles away from Collumpton.

Sarah Jane's father William Bawden/Bowden was born in Bampton and I believe I have found his parents and brothers under the other spelling of Bawden - Bowden there are no BAWDEN's in the transcripts.

Not sure if this would fit in with yourself. If the bapt is correct then I have found 5 brothers 2 of which died young and the names were re-used. William was the second William born.

Hope that this is of some use to you.

I have only just started the search for my ancestors. My Great great Grandfather Thomas Bawden immigrated from Cornwall to Moonta in South Australia in 1857 as a Copper Miner. His surname was interpreted as Bowden in Australia. This might be the same with your ancestors. Both names are very common in Cornwall and Moonta so it's difficult to search.

I would like to know where in Cornwall Thomas lived and more about his family. I know he arrived with two brothers John and James (I think - the passenger list was hard to read).

I am a member of Find-a-Grave and I did a search for all Bawdens. This was entered by Layla, no bio info from her and no attention to her page. Last entry, I think I saw, was 2004. Her public notes, people who leave msgs, are not good ones. I added mine in case somebody else gets the same search results. Here is what Dale Bawden's listing says - pasted from the page. If he belongs to anyone, it should be deleted and given a correct home. Maybe Find-a-Grave admins can help us.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Birth: unknown
Death: Mar. 22, 2004
Arizona, USA
age: 77 years.
Dale was from Mobile, AZ.
(I couldn't find a county for the City of Mobile so Yavapai is probably incorrect).
Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Burial:
Unknown
Specifically: Arizona
Edit Virtual Cemetery info [?]
Created by: Layla
Record added: Mar 28, 2004
Find A Grave Memorial# 8568102
My Bawdens, John and Henry, both in the generational mining business, left Cornwall early for your neighboring Australia. I have minimal documentation that says they lived and died in Moonta, thanks to Dr. John Symonds. John married Josepha Mat(t)hews but I don't know if he took her from Cornwall or found her after the immigration, or when he crossed.
Finding Bawdens in Australia, particularly these 2 names, is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I'm glad to have verified family hand-written notes and remarks in their father's will. Hopefully I can continue to collect any anecdotal or documentable info.
I am fulfilling an idea I had several years ago of placing a grave marker on my ancestor's unmarked grave in Illogan, Cornwall. I've arranged for a stone marker to be made and have created a bronze sculpture to be affixed. My wife and I will be traveling to Cornwall at the solstice this summer with the sculpture from our home in the US to complete the project.
I've traced my roots in Cornwall back to the 1600's. I would love to meet any of my kin. My family tree can be found at the following site:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/us?words=dbawden3&am...
My cousin, Shawn Bawden, also has a family web site that can be reviewed at:
http://bawden.info/
Interested parties can contact me at dbawden@hotmail.com.
Dave Bawden
Census which shows her with daughter living with brother Stephen and his family.
Have you seen the 1861 Census, Redruth, which shows Elizabeth b. abt 1824 with a different surname and family living with father Stephen age 71, retired blacksmith? I am trying to figure out the descrepancy.
Piece: RG9/1579 Place: Redruth -Cornwall Enumeration District: 7
Civil Parish: Redruth Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 120 Page: 1 Schedule: 2
Address: Fore Street
------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MCCOVEY Michael M.
The 2 Elizabeths with Stephen are his sister-in-law and niece. She is Mary Terrill's sister who married Wm Clemo in England and she was divorced or widowed before she came to the US / Stephen's household. Elizabeth Terrill was born 13 April 1820 in Redruth. They were dtrs of Samuel and Mary Terrill of Redruth. (no other info).
She and dtr Elizabeth were living with sister Mary and bro-in-law Stephen in Norristown, Montgomery Cnty, PA (no immigration info) and came to Rockingham with them (1880 census). Family tradition says "Grandma Clemo" was divorced and lived with Stephen and Mary in their Rockingham, Scott Cnty, IA home after 1880 when she was a resident of St. Paul, Ramsey Cnty, MN with dtr Elizabeth Clemo and her husband James A. Ryan.
Mother Elizabeth returned to Davenport about 1896 and lived with widowed dtr Elizabeth who died 12 Dec 1910. Mother Elizabeth died of nervous prostration on 19 Dec 1910. One week apart! They were members of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport.
Dtr Elizabeth Clemo Ryan married in Davenport 28 June 1866 and they lived in St. Paul where James was a wholesale grocer. He died 9 Feb 1885 in St. Paul. They had one child - Harry Clemo Ryan b 18 Jan 1868 in Davenport. He married in Davenport, Edna Burdick b 1 Nov 1872 in Davenport. Edna and Harry divorced 13 Jan 1910, childless, and Edna returned to her parents' home (census). Harry died of diabetes in Chicago 6 June 1915. Edna died 15 Aug 1969 in Pasadena, CA (no cause).
The Elizabeth that married Michael McCooey (McCooey family spelling) was indeed Stephen's sister. She was born (well, christened) 15 Mar 1823 in Redruth, married and died in Redruth.
Elizabeth Jelbert (prolific transcriber error - nee Gilbert) was Stephen Sr's wife. She was born 18 June 1791 in Redruth, dtr of Richard and Elizabeth Reynolds Gilbert. Richard and Elizabeth also had a son Richard b 1 Nov 1789 in Redruth.
Siblings: Stephen b 6 April 1812, Harriet b 5 Mar 1815, Edwin b 30 Mar 1817, John b 18 April 1819, Henry b 1 April 1821, Elizabeth b 15 Mar 1823, Caroline b 5 Oct 1825 m. Thos Vivian b 1826 (do you have a date?), and Matilda b 19 July 1830. All in Redruth.
I'm guessing you've been in contact with Graham Aldridge who's mother is a direct from the VIVIAN line. graham171057@yahoo.co.uk
If you'd like more Bawden info, I'd be glad to help.
Carol in Iowa
