Hugh Bay of Cincinnati

I have posted to this message board a couple of times in the past looking for direction involving my 2x great grandmother, Phoebe Marie Bay, b. 14 February 14 1850. I have found her parents, and the greatest brick wall in my research has come down. Unfortunately, her father has turned into a larger brick wall, and I am in need of some help. According to some unsourced papers, Phoebe's parents are Hugh Bay and Sarah McMahon. I could find no record of them. It turns out that Sarah McMahon, after marrying Hugh Bay and giving birth to Phoebe Bay, married a man with the surname of Snow. I am only assuming that her father, Hugh Bay died. They had a son, Henry Snow, b. about 1852 in Ohio. Sarah then married a man by the name of John Allen in Boone County, KY, although she gave her palce of birth and residence as Cincinnati, Ohio, and declared herslf a widow at the time of her marriage. So, I am pretty well satisfied that her second husband, Snow, died. For my research, Phoebe was so difficult to find, because she had the surname of Allen in subsequent census enumerations. It is as long and complicated as it sounds, however, now I would like to turn my attention to her father. Does anyone have a displaced Hugh Bay who may have been born circa 1825 in Ohio who may have disappeared? Has anyone seen a marriage record for Hugh Bay and Sarah McMahon, or any Sarah for that matter? And finally, can anyone give me any direction in finding a marriage record in Hamilton County for this Bay-McMahon marriage about 1849, and Snow-Bay marriage. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this long-winded post. Any advice will be deeply appreciated. You may contact me directly with any questions at CanoeCarver@aol.com.

What I know of her: She was born in Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH on the 14 February 1850 (according to her tombstone and 1880 Fed Census), 1848 (according to the 1900 Federal census), and 1852 (according to her marriage license). She married Elmer K. Ashby on March 14, 1872 in Twenty-Mile Stand, Warren, OH; the license said she was a resident of the county. By 1880, she was in Symmes (Loveland Village), Hamilton, OH with her husband, Elmer and her children, John David, Elmer Goodwin, and Wesley Irwin Ashby. Her daughter, Grace Leola Ashby, was on the way, and she had just buried a son, Charles Ashby in 1879.

In 1880 and 1900, she had reported both parents were born in Ohio. In 1900 she was in Harvey, Cook, IL , outside of Chicago. By this time she had given birth to Grace and three other sons: a second son named Charles with the middle name of Overton, Hugh Bay and Foster Hazelwood Ashby.

She died at Harvey, IL on April 14, 1902 after a long illness, according to her obituary. The Rebekkas were present at her funeral, so I am thinking she, and possibly her family, were involved in this sorority, and perhaps the men could have been involved with the Odd Fellows fraternity. She is buried at Gibson City, IL in Ford County.

I met an Ashby researcher who had the name of her parents, but no source. He is in his 80s and has been doing research since the 1950s, but I am still reluctant to accept his information. He has her parents as Hugh Bay and Sarah McMahon. I can find none of these people in vital records posted online or in census images. I had always suspected her father or grandfather was Hugh Bay, but only because she named one of her sons Hugh Bay Ashby. I was hoping that some of this may trigger some information, especially the naming patterns of her sons. With names like Goodwin, Charles Overton, Hugh Bay, and Foster Hazelwood, this implies some type of familial naming practices. I do know that both John David and Wesley Irwin as well as Elmer were all Ashby names.

Thanks for any insight. Email me directly at canoecarver@aol.com

Would love any help I could get in finding out about the family of Martha Adell Bay. Her father was Robert Russell Bay, and her mother was Lilly May Varney. She was my grandmother. She died very young, during or soon after childbirth. Would love to get in touch with the decendants of her siblings, Raymond, Leroy, or Thelma. After her death, there was no contact with the Bay side of the family.

Their children were born in Burlington, Kansas, near Trenton in Missouri, Liberal Kansas and Kansas City Kansas. between the years of 1891 and 1915.
I found Angeletta Bay in the 1880 census at age 8. I am questioning whether this could be my grandmother, who had a brother named Jim also named in the census.. She usually went by her middle name, Elizabeth. I've done a lot of searching and I'm not coming up with anything solid. Is there anyone out there who can help me? Thank you.. Mary
I want to correspond with other researchers of Cyrus BAY, who married Lucinda Frame on 21 March 1850 in Berrien County, Michigan. Lucinda was the daughter of Newton Frame and Elizabeth Peake. Cyrus and Lucinda settled in Porter County, Indiana, where the Frame family had resided since 1834. They had seven children: David, Sara, Ellen, Lucy Elizabeth, Levi, Gracie, and George.

Cyrus served as a Private in Co. C, 99 Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He died on 16 April 1900 and is buried in Wheeler Cemetery, Union Township, Porter County, Indiana.

The information I have about Cyrus' parents or birthplace comes from his Civil War pension application and is as follows:
• His father's name was David BAY
• Cyrus was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania
• Cyrus was born around 1827

Also researching the Frame, Phillips, Peak, Peake, Peek, and McCarahan families of Porter County.

Blanche Bay in PA?--WWII Brother

Doing my friend's family tree. His paternal grandmother was BLANCHE BAY (born 28 November 1925 in Pennsylvania(?); died 22 February 1998 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida). Her obit and her marriage certificate (she married Stephen Girard Barth, Jr. of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA somtime around 1945) do not list her parents. She supposedly had a brother who died in WWII. Unfortunately, I only found 3 Bays who died in WWII none of which were from Pennsylvania: Carleton Holz Bay of Michigan, Charles J. Bay from Massachusetts, and Leonard L. Bay from Ohio.
I am hoping someone may know anything about her. She had 3 sons: Stephen Girard, III, Phil, and Richard and one daughter, Patricia. Her children were never told anything about their maternal grandparents but they think she may be of French-Canadian extraction. Any ideas?
ALL ARE WELCOME! :)

BAY BROTHERS - STEAMBOATS - OHIO RIVER

I'm trying to learn the parentage and origin of the Bay brothers, Capt. George W. and William who ran a steamship line out of Ironton, Ohio from about 1862 on into the 1900's. This was the Portsmouth and Pomeroy Packet Co. The brothers also had a sister, Sallie who married a man named Smith.

George born around 1835 and William 1846. George had wife, Mary, and daughter, Minnie.

May be tied to Thomas and Elizabeth Bowen Bay of the same area aroung 1850.

These people do not seem to be connected with any of the Thomas Bay/Elizabeth Blackburn line or any Hugh Bay line.

Any leads will be appreciated. Thanks.

Tom Bay, Columbus, OH

Bay/Bey family in Nebraska

I am researching my Bay/Bey line. I know grandpa John Bey/Bay came from Germany and settled in Nebraska. His first wife was Sophia and his second wife was Mary...sorry, maiden names unknown. John and Sophia lived in Nebraska City, Nebraska and had: ANNIE R., FRED/FREDERIC W., AND BERTHA S. Fred W. Bey married Hannah and had: RAYMOND, ADA, ALICE, ELLEN, FRANCES, AND BENITA/GENITA. I am not sure who Annie or Bertha married. John and Mary lived in Blair, Nebraska and had: Floyd F., Donald, and Arthur H. Floyd married POLLYANNA LYNCH, Donald married MABEL NAGEL, and Arthur married NANCY...maiden name unknown. After the death of Amelia (Morris) Bey, their daughter-in-law, John and Mary raised their 3 grandsons, Floyd, Arthur, and Donald, for some time. I do have the names of other Bay/Bey family members if that would help. I am at a dead end and REALLY need some help here! Some of the other names that are connected to my Bay/Bey line are: HOYE, LYNCH, GATEWOOD, SELDEN, MORRIS, PAYNE, PERSON, GRAHAM, LIRA, and many others. Please, if you have any information or think you might have information contact me. Thank you!!!

Terri

Hester Bay who married Ben Jones

My GGGgrandmother was named Hester Bay, and married a Beniah Jones, according to family records. The dates are near a match, but some of the info seems to be different. Our family stories say she was born in Ireland and came to America at the age of 10. Could this possibly be the same Hester Bay? I know that she lived with her husband in Kentucky, Mt. Sterling was the town, from around 1790 to 1823. Any info you can give me will be helpful.

Phoebe Marie Bay Ashby; Ohio

I wanted to update my previous queries. I have found other information that may aid someone in helping me.

I am looking for ancestry of Phoebe Marie Bay. According to her tombstone, she was born in 1850 in Cincinatti, OH. Although in the 1900 census, she reported being born in 1852. According to the 1880 and 1900 Federal Census, both her parents were born in Ohio.

She married Elmer K. Ashby. I have seen his middle name as both Kenneth and Kirk. The marriage took place in Warren County, Ohio. This certificate notes that Phoebe was a resident of that county. They were married at the N.P. Methodist Church. This may not be her religeon, Elmer's father's family were Methodists from Maryland. Elmer's mother came from a family of devout Quakers.

By 1880, Phoebe and Elmer had moved to Symmes, OH and had three sons, John David, Elmer Goodwin, and Wesley Irwin Ashby. By 1900, they followed Elmer's family to Ford County, IL, outside Chicago, in a city named Harvey. Here, Phoebe and Elmer had a daughter, Clara L. Ashby and three other sons, Hugh Bay, Charles Overton, and Foster Hazelwood Ashby.

Phoebe died in 1902, after a long illness, according to her obituary. She is buried at Gibson Cemetery, by the side of her husband, who died 22 years later.

If anyone has any information for me, I would deeply appreciate it. Thanks so much again, Ted
