Do you have any information on descendants of Alexander and Eliza Jane? I have a little information but not that much. Did the surname spelling change along the way?

Eliza's brother John Thomas Rossetter was my great grandfather and he left Stewart Co., TN for Collin Co., TX.

Thomas Baynham Convict to Australia

Thomas b1809 Herefordshire was convicted of theft in London in 1830
And transported to Aussie in 1832/1833 wher he married an Irish convict in1843.
Thomas was a bit of a scoundrel and found it difficult to stay out of trouble in Sydney in the 1850's by which time he'd changed his name to Benham.
After a close brush with the noose in 1869 when his common law wife was murdered he disappeared (and hopefully went back home).
Whatever his ultimate fate he had two daughters in the 1840's and hence his genes if not his bones still reside in Aussie.
If anyone knows where his bones actually are I would be very pleased to hear from them

It will be remembered that recently Mr. J.J.Baynham of this city lost a barn at Lordsburg by fire. On Monday last Mr.Baynham discovered some human bones in the barn, a grewsome evidence that some one was in the barn when it was destroyed by fire. It is thought that some tramp went into the barn to sleep and probably was drunk or asleep when the fire occurred and that he perished without being aroused.

Baynhams of east london/middlesex

I am trying to trace information on my great grandfather - Edward Baynham born about 1876/. He married Clara Dove in 1904 but is stated as "Frederick Edward Baynham" a mercentile seamen on my grandfathers birth certificate. Edward's father was also Edward Baynham (a glass blower). Despite extensive searching I haven't find any records that are even a slight match....it's as if they never existed...has anyone else come across this problem? Any tips/info would be great.

Good to hear from you, My great grandfather was George Slatter, Laura louisa Slatters brother,the only son to Frances charlotte Dodd and Henry John Slatter.
they had four daughters and George.
The daughters were Frances Selena Slatter 1859
Laura Louisa 1861
Rosina Matilda 1862
Emily Harriet 1864 Then George my great Grandfather1867
Fanny Slatter.1869

I have done much research and would love to hear from you again.

My research suggests Laura married her brother in law John Samuel Lamble after Charles Lucas Baynhams death and the death of his wife Rosina, not their best man? Of this I am pretty certain. I will send you more detail when I hear from you again by email if you wish.

This is terrific, My Great Grandfather was a dark horse, but I can tell you a few things about him, you might not know perhaps.

I have just noticed your post re Charles Lucas Baynham and the fact that the Slatter name appears on your family posts. My Charles Lucas Baynham married Laura Louisa Slatter and is my Great grandfather. Their Child Edith Rosina was my Grandmother. I believe that he died around the 1920's and that Laura remarried their best man and lived until 1939.

I know this is sketchy but that side of my family happens to be that way. Any information you might have would be appreciated.

My Gr Grandfather was John Waller Baynham, his Father was John W Baynham b: Halifax County, VA, son of Wm Baynham and Nancy Faulkner his father was Gregory Baynham and mother Mary Elizabeth Eggleston.

Hi Beth, if you look at my tree you'll see quite a lot of Baynhams. My mother is the daughter of Queenie Baynham, who was the daughter of Frank and Ethel. Frank was the son of Thomas H Baynham and so it goes on. These are those Baynhams that were in Herefordshire and moved to Birmingham and what a complex lot they were!

Thomas Baynham - Herefordshire stray?

Hi All,

I've reached a brick wall and have been gnashing my teeth over it for years, so if anyone could help it would be wonderful. (All suggestions welcome :))

I'm looking for any sign of a Thomas Baynham who was most likely born in Herefordshire and moved up to Lancashire (Whitworth, Spotland.) He fatherered an illegitmate son from whom my family descends. (A son born as Thomas Pye in 1872, later called himself Thomas Baynham when he married in 1901. On his marriage cert, his father is listed as 'Thomas Baynham', a foreman builder, deceased.)

I know Thomas Baynham (Snr) must have met Hannah Elizabeth Pye in Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire. She was married to a Milson Pye, a grocer, who died in 1868. (She is Hannah Elizabeth Willis by birth.)

By the 1871 census, Hannah Elizabeth is calling herself Hannah Baynham, and is living in Spotland with the children from her first marriage. She is listed as being Married, however I suspect she never married Thomas Baynham, because their son is later registered under her married name 'Pye', rather than Baynham.

Unfortunately, Thomas Baynham (Snr) hasn't popped up on any census. I've trawled through loads of records looking for any other sign of him, but haven't had any success.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I should look next? I don't think there would be any bastardy deposition involved because Hannah Pye and Thomas Baynham lived together and he would have financially supported her.

Suggestions welcome!!

I posted the previous message in 2004 and now after a further 5 years of researching I have found that Bayman is not a derivation of Baynham. I have found only 1 example of Baynham to Bayman and 1 example of Beaumont to Bayman. My conclusion is that the theory is baseless.

I have found information that links the name Bayman with the ancient Wiltshire surname Baillemond (the ealiest example I can find is in Somerford, Wiltshire - if you want to find out more contact me direct at baymanp@iinet.net.au

I am also interested in this family Beth. Henry BAYNHAM was married to Harriet JAMES 7Aug1833 in Leominster HER. He was a tailor, with children Jane and Henry in the 1841 census, and Jane, Henry, Reuben, Sarah and Harriet in the 1851 census.
Also in their household in 1841 were Thomas JAMES, presumably a relative of Harriet's, and the 1 year old infant Thomas BAYNHAM. Thomas was the son of a James BAYNHAM and Mary, christened at Little Dean, GLO in 19May1839.
This Mary married a William DOBBS 7Mar1840. So I believe James BAYNHAM may have died, and am considering that the young Thomas may have been Henry BAYNHAM's nephew - perhaps James and Henry being brothers, and Thomas visiting, or extended visiting at the time of the 1841 census. Thomas was living with Mary and William DOBBS at the time of the 1851 census.

Have you had any other leads on this family?

Does anyone have any information regarding a Henry Baynham born c1810 in Hereford, Herefordshire. The IGI shows a christening for a Henry Baynham at St.Nicholas Church, Hereford but this is in l814, which I think is a little late. The parents shown on this christening record are James Baynham and "Mary".

Most of the future Baynhams in our tree came from Leominster and towards the end of the l9th century moved to Birmingham.

Any help would be grateful appreciated.

I have finally moved beyond Tandy. I was contacted by a descendant of his brother, John Waller Baynham after a post on the internet. She had the tidbit that their mother's name was Virginia, and that she remarried a D.A. Thornton and was in the 1880 Birmingham, Marshall Co., Ky. census with John Waller, Tandy Max and Millie M. Baynham (her children by her former husband) and several Thornton children. From there I was able to match Virginia to Virginia M. Baker through their marriage record in Christian County to John W. Baynham on Sept. 2, 1855. That is far as I have gotten. John Waller Baynham's obituary says that he was the son of a prominent pioneer Kentucky tobacco warehouseman and was raised in Louisville to young manhood. I am hoping someone in Louisville might know of Baynham's in the area in the time frame of the Civil War. Any and all assistance would be appreciated. I have not found any link yet with Richard George Baynham's family. Just in case you haven't found the information, Richie G. was the son of Gregory Eggleston Baynham and Mary Catherine Jefferson.

Mr. Baynham, age 76, died Sunday, February 26, at 11:20 p.m. at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lalla Doris Baynham, of Providence; two sons, Jeff Baynham, of Tyler, Texas, and Frank Baynham, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Mary Ann Oakley, of Providence, and Susan Brown, of Princeton; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Is your Joanna Baynham the granddaughter of Elizabeth Scott who wrote her will in Halifax County VA 12/25/1786 and was proven 12/20/1787? This Joanna is named in her will. Elizabeth Scott also names sons John Wyatt and Richard Wyatt and daughter Rebecca Wyatt. This John Wyatt may be my John who died in Halifax Co. in 1808. I am seeking the birth of Sarah Baynham. Her father was Henry Baynham and a clerk in Totnes in 1795 so Sarah was possibly born about 1775. Sarah married Roger Alden Hiern in Bristol by licence in 1795. Mother's name was Martha.

Noticed that your family was from Paducah, Ky. My grandfather Richard George Baynham was born in 1869 in Cadiz, Kentucky. He later moved to Providence, Ky.
He had two sons, on my father, Thomas Jefferson BAynham Jr.

Baynham and Bayman

All Baynham researchers...the books on origins of names gives Bayman as the derivative of Baynham and I have found a number of instances where the further East of Gloucestershire the more likley the Baynham name was spelt as Bainham or Bayman (e.g. Christopher Baynham of Clearwell Glos had his name spelt as Bayman in 1623 visitation of Somerset)

What I am looking for is a link with my most distant ancester Henry Bayman (also known as Pythouse or Pittis) of Ramsbury, Wilstshire circa 1533. Anybody found any Baynham connections with Wilstshire.

I am also waiting on some DNA tests and hope to put up a DNA name project and see if I can't at least connect with someone else with a similar surname as I have reached the "brickwall"

Lisa - good to hear from you. It is the same Baynham, line. Charles had 9 children - my mothers grandad was John Arthur - the eldest son.

Have heaps of info and certificates I can email you about Charles/Edward and the line after John, including a photo of 4 generations with Charles in it.

I think that the Edward Baynham that you are referring to is my great great great grand father!

The earliest trace I have for this part of family was Edward on the 1851 census - it is through his son Charles that I am descended. Charles though was born in Cirecncester (1847) so it looks as though Edward moved to Gloucestershire first. I am not sure whether the whole family moved to the Rhondda/ Glamorgan or just Charles.

I will try and attach something that may be of interest.

A branch of the Baynhams most recently have come from Pontypridd in the Rhonda. However, they got there, via Edward Baynham (father Thomas), born Ross on Wye 18th December 1819.

Can anyone link me to earlier generations? Barry Adams has a great family pedigree - but appears to have a different Edward?

They appear to have continued living in Bristol until their deaths. He was a grocer.

ANN BAYNHAM married WILLIAM SMITH in 1819 at St James,Bristol, and later moved to Walcot, Bath, Somerset, where all their children were born.
Her sister HESTER BAYNHAM married ROBERT SMITH (brother of WILLIAM above) in 1822 at St James, Bristol.

Their parents were THOMAS BAYNHAM and ELIZABETH HILL.

I am looking for any info on THOMAS and ELIZABETH.

I have confirmed details of the aforementioned children of ANN and WILLIAM.

my name is James William Baynham, I am originally from Hereford, born on Edgar street 1970. My Grandfather was William Baynham, but I don't know what his fathers name was. I may be able to help more if i can dig deeper into the family history.
