DNA match to Bechtel/Bechtol

My cousin and I (both have a Biddle surname) were tested and recorded a Y-DNA match, at a "genetic distance" of only (4), with a descendant of George BECHTOL (c1772) of PA. We were also a very close match to a descendant of Johann Burkhart BECHTOLD/BECHTEL (c1725-1790), of Chester Co., Pa., who was born in Rhineland-Palatinate. Neither of us recorded a match to the any of the dozen BIDDLE donors. We are both direct-line male descendents of Joseph H Biddle (c 1787), who lived in Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, PA. We have a well-documented paper trail to Joseph, but can find nothing definitive about his origins or siblings. We know that he enlisted in the army in 1813 at Upper Darby, Delaware County, PA, had 12 children, and was married to Mary Patterson, who is buried at Lobbs Run Cemetery in Jefferson Twp, Allegheny Co, Pa. We think that the reason we do not match any Biddle donors and that our Biddle trail ends at Joseph is because he or his parents changed their name from BECHTEL/BECHTOL to BIDDLE. Thus, our Y-DNA chromosomes are actually Bechtel/Bechtol instead of Biddle. In any regard, these DNA results prove that there is a "common ancestor" linking our families. We would appreciate any help in finding the link that ties these two Pennsylvania families together.

Hi, I don't know if this is the same fellow, but I believe it is. Edward Bechtol is living with his grand parents, Abraham and Susan Hildebrand Bechtol on the 1905 Minnesota Territorial and State Census of Blue Earth Indiana. So far, I have pin pointed 4 children of Abraham and Susan: Lewis b 1842 Ohio, Elizabeth b 1844 Ohio m Henry W. Lohr 5 Nov 1868 Marshall Co Indiana, Susanna b 15 Dec 1846 Ohio d. 19 July 1881 Marshall, Indiana, and Samuel (mine) b 12 July 1857 Plymoth, Marshall, Indiana m Mary Ann Osborn 1881, Plymoth, Marshall, Indiana, d 21 Mar 1927. The above birth dates are from census records. This Edward (Charles Edward Bechtell) was married to Bertha Sailor per several trees on Ancestry and from another researcher I am in contact with. He is the descendent of Edward's daughter Marvel. Several possibilities exist: one, Lewis was Franklin Lewis? two, Edward was the son of another child of Abe and Susanna that I don't know of, three he was the illegitmate child of one of the girls? I don't think he was Elizabeths because she was married to Lohr in 1870 when Edward was born. He could have been Susanna's illigetimate child, she not being well, as she died in 1881 and is buried in Cromley Cemetery, Monterey, Marshall, Indiana (picture on FIND A GRAVE)She is listed on this same census with Samuel and Edward. Samuel was only 13 when Edward was born so not likely he is the father but not to be ruled out. What is your source of information as to the parents of Charles Edgar Bechtel please. My e-mail address is jwhitney@pacifier.com I live in Washington State and am looking forward to hearing from you.
I read your post about old cemetaries. I have a picture of my great grandfather's or could be my great-great grandfather or an uncle. There were so many Jaspers and Levis in the Lindley line (this one read 1933 or died 1903. I am looking for the photo now. On the back of the photo it says Jasper L (or C) Lindley. 33rd degree Mason and it says Pleasantville Cemetary. There is a Masonic Ball on top of the headstone. White marble base. My Aunt was murdered and my mother passed in 2004. All aunts and uncle are gone as well. As most of the Lindleys were from Oregon/ Washington states I didn't really look anywhere else? Could you please give me the information on the cemetary three blocks away from you and possibly Pleasantville? Thank you for your time. The other half is the Munger clan. Really having a tough time with that one. Thank you for your time. DeNaya Jones

The George and Hannah Bechtell Family of Frederick Co., MD

George Bechtell b. c.1765 in PA, married Hannah Unknown b.? in Ireland. They had three sons: Jacob b. c.1787, George b. c.1791, and Samuel b. c.1794. After Hannah died about 1794, George c.1765 married Ester Eller. He then placed his three small sons in indenture until the age of 21 years to learn a trade. Jacob and George were placed together. Samuel, an infant at the time, was placed with another family.

George and Ester had one son, John Calvin Bechtel/Beagle c. 1797, before George c.1765 passed away c.1798. Ester then married a Martin Rohrer in MD.

Once the three sons had completely served their indenture, the young men began to marry. Jacob Bachtel/Bechtell married Charlotte Koontz and George Beachtell/Baechtle married Phoebe Koonce. It is believed that Charlotte and Phoebe may have been sisters. Samuel Becktell married later to Barbara Unknown, possibly in PA on their way to Ohio. You may have noticed the different surname spellings for the three young men. With occasional variations in records, the young men kept their individualized spellings.

Jacob and George settled in adjacent counties in Ohio, while Samuel moved on to Stony Creek, Henry County, IN. John Calvin Beagle, using yet another spelling of the surname, married Matilda Selson in MD. Later, John Beagle moved to Muskingum Co, OH, with his family. Martin and Ester Rohrer moved with them. Later, John Calvin Beagle moved his family north to Hancock Co., OH, and settled there.

Source: Reverend Zebedee Warner authored a book, The Life and Labors of Reverend Jacob D Bachtel of the Parkersburg Conference of the Church of the Brethren. Reverend Bachtel was the son of Jacob Bachtel c.1787, and the grandson of George Bechtell c.1765. The book confirms the parents of the three young sons, who were indentured in 1794, as George and Hannah Bechtell.

Looking for other descendants to document and share information sources on this family.

I have his will written in German from Bedford County, PA where his wife is named by Barbara and his children are named: Jacob Daner and Isaac Daner under 21, children of my daughter Magdalena shall draw their inheritance, and the children of my daughter Sahra shall draw their share, and the children of my daughter Anna their share, and the children of my daughter Esther their share even though the girls were alive at the time, finally he listed his son Christian is on the other side - not mentioned.
His wife and Samuel Bechtel, the younger are named as excutors and a Isaac Baichtel Bedford County, PA is witness. The will is proved 17 April 1805 and Sale 29 April 1811. I am guessing that is when his wife died. Anyone know these BECHTELs from Bedford or Fulton County, PA?

They had four sons, Richard G (who died in WWI), Robert R (1884-1953), Ralph W (1891-1944) & George D (1899-?). Ralph & Richard are buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. The above link is to a story which appeared in The Daily Nevada State Journal (Reno, Nevada), 26 Aug 1903, No. 99, entitled, 'RISKED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT OTHERS." It is paraphrased below in my own words:

It seems that George Bechtel, an employee of the United Railways company, was checking for trouble on a power line in San Francisco and climbed a utility pole. While he inspected a dead wire, a live wire came loose and George caught it bare handed. He held onto both wires for about five minutes while an estimated 500 volts of electricity flowed through his body. By enduring this, he saved pedestrians on the street below from being injured by the live wire. George W. Bechtel survived the incident with charred hands. He apparently recovered and continued to perform electrical work until the 1913 incident when he was electrocuted in San Francisco, CA.

I also learned that his father was William L. Bechtel, Manager of the Nevada Power, Light and Water Company of Reno, NV, in 1903.

Should a reader determine a relationship to George W. Bechtel b. abt 1879 in Reno, NV, and d. 26 June 1913 in San Francisco, CA, there were several news articles found on ACOM which referred to George W. Bechtel from grade school honor roll and on in Reno, NV.

Unfortunately, I do not see a connection to my direct line. Hopefully, this additional information will be of interest to another Bechtel researcher.

I have a line of ancestors named George Bechtel (various surname spellings) in my tree, including one named George W. Bechtel. The youngest of these was George Bechtel born in OH about 1850. His family later moved to southern IN, just west of Cincinnati. George's father, Dawson Bechtel, died during the 1870s and his mother probably remarried. I lost track of George 1850 after the 1870 census.

Should you find further information, such as an obit or death cert, for George W. Bechtel, I would be very interested.
Thank you for posting this message.

I have a correction for my Sarah Beachel/Bechtel. She was married to William Moyer, not John Moyer. John Moyer was William's father. John was married to Susannah Hackenberg, descendant of Johann Peter Hackenberg, who fought in the Revolution with "The Flying Camp".

Sorry, I can't be of much help. The only Bechtel (if that is the actual spelling) I have is a Sarah, who married John Moyer, in Pennsylvania. They went to Seneca County, then Sandusky County, OH. They were on my mother's maternal side. The Walker's were on my mother's paternal side. They came from Germany (I would imagine) to PA, to NY, to OH. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Patricia
