Conecuh County is difficult to research. From their website on usgenweb.org is this message “The selection of records at the Courthouse it limited because of two fires in the mid to late 1800’s. however they should have later records of Probates and marriages.”
Unfortunately it is the early probates and marriages we need.
The U S census Slave schedule for 1850 Conecuh County shows George H Beddingfield owning 8 slaves.

55 y/o female black, 29 male black, 27 female mulatto, 18 male black,
15 female black, 15 male black, 9 male black, 1 male black
George died in 1859. He had four sons.
Charles C (my 3g grandfather) and Samuel moved to Mississippi. In 1850 they are in Wayne County. Charles went to Clark then to Lauderdale (where he died in 1880), buying and selling land along the way.
Samuel went to Jasper, then Leake, where he died in 1869.

Sons John and Henry stayed in Conecuh County.

On the 1860 Slave schedule for Conecuh County H Beddingfield has 12 slaves.
28 f black, 22 f b, 20 m b, 18 m b, 15 m b, 11 m b, 10 m b, 7 m b, 5 m b, 2 m b, 3 f mulatto, 1 f m.

C Beddingfield (I’m not sure if this is a misprint or a grandson of Geo)has 9 slaves
41 f black, 17 m b, 15 m b, 12 f b, 11 m b, 8 m b, 7 m b,
5 m b, 3 m b.

As you probably know on the 1870 census Page 1 for Conecuh, beat 2, Bellville starts with John and on the same page are Afro-American Beddingfield families and page 2 that starts with Henry Beddingfield, also has Afro-American Beddingfields.

Don’t worry about the 2d’s. This census taker just happened to spell it that way. I’ve seen the same person with 1 d , 2 d’s, Bennifield, and even Bengifield. They weren’t carefull about spelling.

You can try to match age and sex from the census to the slave schedule , but you still will have no names. And I don’t trust the accuracy of the ages.

What would be great is a will for George Beddingfield but if he had one it was probably lost in the fire. Land records also are lost. Buying and selling of slaves were often recorded there.

I hate to be discouraging but a lot of the records we both need were lost in the fires.

The library in Evergreen was most helpful. They had a Beddingfield file including Bible records and a Beddingfield Cemetery Census which they copied and mailed me, but it was all about the Beddingfield’s who stayed in Conecuh County and nothing on the ones who moved to MS.

I would like to see a marriage record for CC Beddingfield and Mary Wood, who was said to be full-blooded Cherokee. And one for William T Collier and Matilda, CC’s oldest daughter, but I suppose they were lost in the fire.
William T Collier was not a slave owner. The only land he ever owned was 40 acres bought for him by his father-in-law.

I’ll have to look into the Leake County records. My Collier’s did end up there before moving to Forrest County.

Gook Luck on your research. If I can be of further help let me know.
June in Mississippi.

Hello,

My name is Ann. My husband's family name is Bedenfield. It also spelled Beddingfield at one time. His gr grandmother was a Silah, Sillar or Pricilla, born in Alabama in 1850 and ended up in Leake County, Mississippi. There is an Ike Beddingfield, Bedenfield connected to her. Heended up in Mississippi also. He was located first in Conecuh County, Alabama. He was African American and so are we. I feel that my Beddingfiels's might have moved to Mississippi along with your family and might have owned them at one time. Often slaves were named after their owners family members. Some of the same names that are in your family are in mine. Some of our famil members are married to African American Colliers in Mississippi. Do you have or know of any old records that might give names of slaves owned by your family, if they owned any? That would help us find other family members. We would greatly appreciate hearing from you wheather you can help us or not!

ANN BEDENFEILD
Still NO luck on this mystery! I have hoped against
hope that some of the descendants from this same line
in Georgia or Virginia will have a family bible and
come forward. Possibility also exists that the trail
went from Virginia via Tennessee to Georgia. There
seems to be no way to link with the Bedingfield's around
Wake Forest NC area- but that would be a logical path
from Susses. Va enroute to Georgia

I spent some time in the courthouse among loose handwritten documents this morning. Found a will by Solomon Bedingfield dated 1818. Names wife Elizabeth, son James, daug. Sally, sons William and Nedom. Wording of will implies James is independent but Wm and Nedom need guardian. Later, 1825, Guardianship papers for Needham (sic) and William filed by Bennet Griffin. William's estate settled in 1826 by Bennet Griffin, no heirs. Andrew Bedingfield (no indication of relationshhip) submits papers as guardian of Needham in 1853. Josiah Gay files "fifth annual return" as administrator guardian of "Needham Bedingfield, idiot" 1858. There is no indication in the papers of Gay's relationship to Needham or to Solomon or Sally Bedingfield. Could Sally be the same "Sarah" you refer to who married Josiah Gay? Do you know if there is a Mary Bedingfield in Solomons line born about 1792 in Jefferson Co Ga?

This is such an old thread that it may not reach anyone but I was curious if anyone has had some luck over the past year in tracking down Nathaniel Bedingfield's parents names? My great great grandmother was Minerva Caroline Bedingfield, daughter of Charles Benjamin C. Bedingfield (one of Nathaniel Bedingfield's sons). Also, using Ancestry you can really track back a long way through Nathaniel Bedingfield's wife, Manerva Catherine Merritt's family. I am hesitant to take at face-value the family connection between John Goodrich and Richard Goodricke (the dates seem off - his mother would have been way too old). Has anyone researched this part of the family? Thanks!

I too have been searching for this info on and off for
40 years....just now doing it on the internet. I have
Nathaniel Beddingfield's Bible with all 19 children's
births and many deaths recorded. Unfortunately he gave
no info on his or his wife's (Manerva Catherine Merritt)
family. A first name for his father would have resolved
all this angst! According to my father, his grandfather
(David Levi Bedingfield) reported coming by the old
"homeplace in Virginia" enroute back from the surrender
at Appomatox (he was with Lee and took a minnie ball to
his hand in an earlier battle. His son was Levi David
Beddingfield (extra d added) to avoid the Junior business.
Agness Lively (my aunt) now has advanced Alzheimers and
cannot provide any accurate info. Some of her info is
correct and some not quite right.

I'm brand new to the search for relatives, so I guess I'm wondering if we're connected. My grandfather was John William Beddingfield. Died in 1984 in North Carolina...I believe he was born around 1910. He had a brother and sister but I'm not sure of their names.

Does your family line have roots in North Carolina?

I've thought about going to the Henderson County Genealogical Society and poking around some. In fact, I actually went up there one Sunday to see where it is and what the hours are.

I found 2 or 3 Julias in my info, but none match up to those specific dates. The only one even close is the mention of a daughter Julia (to Nathaniel Joseph) in the 1860 census. Not sure if it's from Greenville, SC or Henderson, NC. Have you checked the Texas and Oklahoma census records? There are also a large number of Bedingfields from GA during that period.

I have a 'rough draft' of the documents written by Agnes Lively, dated 1988, but it's disjointed and seems to be missing some pages. Where can I find a copy of the finished product? I descend from Ezekiel's brother David Levi Bedingfield. They served together in Co G (Henderson Rifles) of the 35th NC Infantry Regiment. I visited both cemetaries about a month ago. Do you live nearby?

I descend from Nathaniel and Manerva Bedingfield's 6th child, Ezekiel Merritt Beddingfield who married a Bane. Nathaniel Bedingfield is my 5th great grandfather. The book you are referring to was written by Agnes Beddingfield Lively in 1993.
I recently visited the Beddingfield Cemetery and photographed the tombstones located there. All of these have been placed on Find-a-grave. I also have photographed the tombstones that were visible in the Davis Cemetery where Nathaniel and Manerva Merritt Bedingfield are buried. Most of the stone in this cemetery were field stones and the cemetery was in poor condition.
As for the Mary Beddingfield b. 1848 that married George Miller, could this have been a daughter of Ezekiel Beddingfield. I have seen that they have a daughter Mary about this same time.

Ricky Pace

My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Beddingfield (b. Abt 1851) of South Carolina. I wonder if Mary Elizabeth is kin to the Beddingfield family you have? She married George Addison Miller, one of their children was Mamie Miller who married Ernest Hezekiah Hayden, their son Aubrey Cleveland Hayden was my grandfather.
It would be great if we have a connection, I am at an impasse on the parents of Mary Elizabeth Beddingfield.
Thanks,
Joe

Charles C Beddingfield family AL>MS

I am trying to tie up a few loose ends on my Beddingfield-Collier tree. I want to put my research on line to share with others.
One loose end is the grand-daughter living with Charles C. & Mary Jane Beddingfield:
US Census 1860 MS Clarke County, Atinnisa 3yo F
US Census 1870 MS Lauderdale County, Mary A. 12yo F
Us Census 1880 MS Lauderdale County, Artamissa 22yo F grandaughter
This appears to be the same person.
Which of CC's sons is her father? William, Charles or John Jefferson.
I believe the most likely candidate is Charles with his first wife Margaret Carr since she died 24 Dec 1859 (per her tombstone in the Bucatunna Cemetery). Ancestry.com has a marriage record for Charles and Margaret on 06 Jan 1859. These random records are not always accurate, I would like to see the county ledger. If they were married a year earlier the dates would fit perfectly. Does anyone have data to refute or back up my theory? Both William and JJ each had one wife who outlived them. Charles married Martha in 1860 and Frances Lassiter in 1877.
Also I have no data on two daughters of CC & Mary Jane: Mary J. (born abt 1831) and Fereba (born abt 1840). Can anyone help?
I am descended from CC's oldest daughter, Matilda and William T Collier.
June in Mississippi
Beddingfields of Conecuh, AL

I have seen a much quoted Sam Beddingfield post of Sam (1775), the father, with children John Jefferson (1794), Wyatt Harmon (1796), Will (1798) and CC. Have any of you ever found any data to back this up? It seems to be a different family from mine.
In my tree I have Charles C. Beddingfield (1806-1880), Samuel D. (abt 1819-1869) which seem to be brothers, Wyatt Harmon (1857-1922) son of Samuel D.; William (1828-died before 1880) son of CC, and John Jefferson (1839-1898) son of CC. JJ also has a grandson and g-grandson named John Jefferson.
I believe the father of CC and Sam to be George Beddingfield of Conecuh County, AL. It is possible George and CC are brothers but I am more inclined to believe the father-son relationship. I derived this from matching the persons (sex and age) on the 1830 and 1840 census ( households of Charles C. and George) with known persons (census 1850-1880). The families match except for the 1840 age for head of household. They are listed there as Bennefield. It appears George had 4 sons CC, Henry, Sam and John and one daughter (name unknown).
Do any of you have any thoughts on my theory? .

Also, I don't have any data on CC's daughters Mary J. (b abt 1831) and Fereba b. abt 1840). Do you?
June in Mississippi

CC Beddingfield>Matilda+ William T. Collier> George T.
I am a direct descendant of Nathaniel Beddingfield via David Levi, David Levi Jr, James Paul and Paul Gary Beddingfields. Several years ago my sister gave me a copy of some genealogy work done by one of the distant relatives. I can no longer find my copy. Does anyone have a copy? Also, does anyone still live at the homeplace off US25? I'd love to come look around and visit the family cemetary, if possible. Also, does anyone have old bible records or copies of birth, death, marriage records? I have a picture of a memorial marker from Camp Douglass, Chicago, IL where one of David Beddingfield's brothers (Charles B.) died as a Civil War POW--captured at Cumberland, KY. From my browsing, it appears that David Levi and another brother were with Co G 35th NC Infantry, and two other brothers were with Co B 64th NC Infantry. Two of the 4 did not survive the war.

We have a Middleton Beddingfield and also a John Arnold Beddingfield in our family tree. Our family in these later years came from Southern TN near the ALabama border and some of the Beddingfields now live in Alabama. There will be a Beddingfield Family reunion in Madison County, AL in July 2006. Moddleton is an unusual name.

I recently found Florence and Allen were my Great-Grandparents, thru their son Charles Albert Wooten. Unfortunatley Florence & Allen are as far as I have been able to get. I don't even have a complete living tree since we Wootens multiply like rabbits. I would appeciate any help.
Your distant cousin
Kim Wooten Weidler
uvasbaby@hotmail.com

Beddington after 1923

I'm looking for a Beddington that lived in or around Utah or Washington state after 1923. He married a Violet Shaffer, whose maiden name was either Glass or Grass. She was married first to John Shaffer
who was killed in a sawmill accident in Everett, Washington shortly
after their marriage. Thanks for any help.

I am a Bedingfield from Laurens County and have been somewhat confused about Sarah Bedingfield and Josiah Gay. There is a Sarah in my line but I have come to think that your Sarah may be from the Solomon Bedingfield line. Any Thoughts? Please email me directly if you wish.
