Hello, Looking for any information on Reuben L. Beebe or Elender Stoud. Reuben was born 6/6/1826 in NY. Enlisted in 39th Regiment, Company K, Ringgold Co., IA on Aug. 22, 1862 and served until June 5th, 1865.

Reuben married an "Alender Stoud" in Worth Co., MO on Feb. 1, 1867. (The marriage certificate states that they both were living in Ringgold Co., IA at the time). Alender (probably Elender, she eventually went by Ellen) was born in 1832 in IL. I assume they both had been previously married and may have had several children from first marriages, including an Emma Beebe b. in 1857 who married Marshall McNamar. Reuben died Mar 5, 1903 after living with/near his daughter, Ethel Potts for his final years. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Bluff City, Harper Co., KS.

Thank you.

Additionally, his mother seemed to have frequently used the name "Ethel" instead of Mary. There might be something in either Harmon, Marion, Dixon or elsewhere in the county. Good luck.

Re: JAMES BEEBE 1829
John Jewitt 1815 was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England, the fifth child of eight children born to John Jewitt 1781 and Jane Smith 1768. His birth date is not known for certain, but he was christened 29 Oct 1815 in Bridlington, Yorkshire. #1. John Jewitt was an early settler arriving in Kinloss in 1845 according to information in ‘Kith and Kin of Kinloss’. He set about clearing land and building a log house near Lake Purves.

There was a John Jewitt listed on the 1881 Census described as a Merchant living in the village of Lucknow with an Eligh Jewitt 20 and a John Jewitt 13. Since this information did not fit the profile of the unmarried John Jewitt, no further attention was paid to this particular family.

That is until Anne Goeden of the Bruce and Grey Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provided assistance in the form of an eight page estate file for John Jewitt. This file revealed that John Smith Jewitt died 25 November 1883 in Lucknow, Ontario after a short illness from inflammation of the lungs. Most importantly, the last page of the Surrogate Court of Bruce County estate document provided a major discovery and is quoted in part as follows: "That the said deceased (a bachelor died leaving your petitioner (Benjamin Jewitt) his brother and Elijah Jewitt, John Jewitt Reso, Helen Jewitt, Elizabeth Pye, Mary Eliza Ascough, Jane Ann Ascough as c**** of c**** of John Beebe, Elijah Beebe, Thomas Beebe and Mary Elizabeth Beebe his k***and ***) without having left any Will, Codicil or Testamentary Paper".

Research showed a family of Ascough's and Beebe's living together on the 1861 UK Census as children of Hannah Haller (Jewitt) Ascough and Mary Eliza (Jewitt) Beebe, daughters of a Benjamin Jewitt 1784, hitherto unknown. Elijah Jewitt 1855 turned out to be the son of Enoch Jewitt 1823, a son of Benjamin Jewitt 1784. John Jewitt 1815 would not have known of these family members since he emigrated from England to Canada in 1845. So the information had to have come from his two nephews Elijah and John William Jewitt. So it came to pass that two brothers John Jewitt 1781 and Benjamin Jewitt 1784 both born in Thorner, Yorkshire were discovered to be brothers by connecting their descendants in John Jewitt’s Canadian estate document.

The fourth epidemic of Asiatic cholera to strike Great Britain in 1865-1866 chose a new port of entry: Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. It was brought in by immigrants from Europe who passed through Hull on their way to America. Mary (Blanchard) Jewitt died 21 Sep 1866 in Doncaster of cholera lasting eight hours. Her seven year old daughter Jane Ann Jewitt died 27 Sep 1866 in Withernsea of cholera. Her husband Enoch Jewitt 1823 died in a temporary Cholera Hospital at Kingston Street, Hull on 3 Oct 1866 of cholera. Asiatic cholera devastated this family but the tragedy was not yet over. The 1871 UK Census shows eight year old Rose Helen Jewitt 1861, the daughter of Enoch Jewitt, suddenly and tragically confined as a pauper inmate to the Patrington Workhouse with her younger brother John William Jewitt 1865. Boys and girls were routinely separated. Gruel was a mainstay food. Workhouse inmates were hired out as farm labor. Her older brother Elijah Jewitt 1855 fled to avoid confinement and made his way to Canada. Elijah Jewitt boarded the Steamship India either in Germany, Scotland or Ireland and arrived in the United States 17 Nov 1871 headed north to find his great uncle John Jewitt in Ontario, Canada.

It was Elijah Jewitt who was found on the 1881 Canada Census with his brother John William Jewitt 1865 living with their great uncle John Jewitt 1815, the Lucknow village blacksmith. Again, Elijah and John William were found on the 1891 Canada Census living as lodgers in the household of James and Annie Bowman in Lucknow, Ontario. Then again, Elijah Jewitt is found returning from England on the steamship Etruria departing Liverpool and arriving at the Port of New York 21 Dec 1891, destination Wisconsin, USA. Elijah Jewitt and his brother John William Jewitt are not found thereafter.

Mary Elizabeth Ascough was the daughter of Hannah Haller Jewitt and George Ascough. Mary Elizabeth (Ascough) Pye was most likely responsible for the rescue and release of her two cousins Rose Helen Jewitt and John William Jewitt from the Patrington Workhouse.

Rose Helen Jewitt is found on the 1881 UK Census living with her first cousin Mary Elizabeth Pye in Hull, Yorkshirre. Her benefactor did much more than befriend Rose Helen, she accepted her into the Pye family for more than 30 years. John William Jewitt is found on the 1881 Canada Census living with his brother Elijah and his great uncle John Jewitt in Lucknow.

John Jewitt was a pioneer, farmer, beekeeper and blacksmith. John Jewitt’s estate file showed in detail the nature and value of his estate. Robert Purves and Malcolm Campbell purchased the estate and personal property of John Jewitt for $4000 dollars. According to the Bruce and Grey Branch of the OGS, as verified by the Huron Branch of the OGS, and as reported in the 30 Nov 1883 Lucknow Sentinel, John Jewitt was buried in St. Helen’s Cemetery, Concession 12, Lot 19, West Wawanosh Township. His monument reads:

“In memory of
JOHN JEWITT
who died Nov 25 1883
Aged 72 years & 9 months
A native of Yorkshire, England.”

Without the valuable service provided by Anne Goeden of the Bruce and Grey County OGS, this tribute to the life of John Jewitt would not have been possible. Every potential source of information is important and should be pursued, especially information to be found in land records and estate files. Leave no stone unturned in a search for family history!

1. (LDS IGI/British Isles C105871).

Regards,
Joe Jewett
o Christopher,
Jane Wade Beebe Harris

Jane Wade Beebe Harris January 11, 1915 ~ June 4, 2011 Jane Wade Beebe Harris, age 96, departed this life on June 4 in Carmel. Tilly Jane (referring to a favorite family stream on the north side of Mount Hood in Oregon), as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was always positive and enthusiastic. She instilled in her family a love of music and humor. Jane was born in Portland, OR on January 11, 1915 to Caroline Wilson Beebe and Kenneth Beebe and was a fifth-generation descendant of Captain John Heard Couch, a sea captain who determined the present site of Portland in 1846. She attended public schools in Portland then earned an Associate's Degree at Sarah Lawrence College. She returned home to work at The Beebe Company, which was founded by her grandfather and was then owned by her father and uncle. In 1935, Jane was introduced to Lawrence W. Harris, Jr., formerly of San Francisco, who had moved to Portland to work in the family company, Ames Harris & Neville. They were married in Portland on September 2, 1939. Their first child, Lawrence III, was born in June of 1941 and was followed by Caroline, Edwin, Kenneth and Louise, all of whom were born in Portland. Jane's family moved to San Francisco in 1955.She was active in civic organizations in that city and supported her two daughters' efforts at Santa Catalina School in Monterey. In 1960, the family moved to Boise, ID following the purchase of Ames Harris & Neville by Boise Cascade Corporation. Upon Larry's retirement from Boise Cascade, he was elected to the Idaho Legislature and served from 1976-1986. Jane assisted him as an energetic and highly respected campaigner and was an active ten-year member of the Idaho LegisLadies. Jane was an avid skier, boater and hiker (she climbed Mount Hood) from a very young age, often accompanying her father. When Sun Valley Resort opened in 1936, Jane and her cousin took the train over from Portland and, many years later, she was a founding member of the Sun Valley Reunion Ski Club gatherings, serving a year as chairperson. Jane and Larry made many European trips, including several with Stanford Study cruises. In 1987, they retired to Carmel Valley, where they enjoyed 24 years with old and new friends and many visits from children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jane is survived by her husband of 71 years, Larry; children, Tige (Peggy), Caroline Henderson, Kenneth (Carmel), Louise (Ray), and Fr. Edwin Harris, S.J.; grandchildren, Wil (Cecilia) Harris, John (Rhonda) Henderson, John (Nora) Harris, Michael (Jenny) Henderson, Margaret Jane (Stephen) Taylor and Aubrey (Melanie) Harris as well as twelve great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Portland on Monday, June 13, followed by private burial. Jane requested that any memorial contributions in her memory be sent to: The Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Drive, Astoria OR, 97103. pub: S F Chronicle Posted also because a person was asking abuot the origin of the Desert Water Bag Canvas bag firm which was located at 17th and Florida in SF

You can google the Darling Family genealogogy, in which they have a list of surnames.
I have found that I have to take the time to keep reviewing the records and sometimes I come up with a match. If you know the name of the wife of James Noble Beebe, an try New London, Ct as his birth and death, you might make some connectons. It's waorth a try. I don't have a web address.

Google "A Monograph of the Descent of the Family of Beebe" - from the earliest known immigrant - John, of Broughton, Northamptonshire, England 1650" by Clarnece Beebe. It gives all the generations. There are a few James Beebe's listed. There is a not of information to read through due to listing the generations and references; plus, you have to search through all the generations to find out who his parents were, his date of birth, date of death and where he died. They don't always sow where he died. Good luck.

This may or may not be of any assistance. James Beebe was son of John Beebe. He died April 22, 1728, in Danbury, CT. He married Mary Boltwood October 24, 1668, in Hadley, Mass. The genealogy and history of the Darling Family has surnames listed in their genealogy, among whom is the name Beebe. Thw first Darling and related lines database is Descendents of John Darling. The 2nd data base contains Other Darling Lines. They suggest checking out Related Lines. This site is owned by Darling Families of New England and Beyond.

What source(s) have you found for Alzina being the cousin of Lorenzo? I've been searching them for a long time. They died in Michigan and I am trying to link them with Louisa /Lillie Beebe who married Nelson Robinson in Ada, MI.
Thanks.

Skeeter was a wonderful man...When I was a kid of 12 or 13 back in 1964 Skeeter would come to my town on Staten Island, NY and hold yoyo contest's for Duncan...The first contest I came in second place and was irate about that..Skeeter saw how determind I was and took a personal interest in me..He taught me the trick I lost to and from that point on I came in first place every time...He set me up to do yoyo demos in the 5 & 10 window...Mentioned my name on TV and helped me to enter the NY state finals..I was # 1 on Staten Island and came in 4th place for NY State..4th place to me was terrible, but looking back, there were about 80 people in the contest...I wish you could have known your Grand Father Skeeter as he was a rare gental, very kind man who loved kids...I'll never forget him...

There are several cemeteries in the New London area. You can access their web pages on line and they list the names of those buried there, even the sayings on some of the tombstones. It is quite interesting. Incidenally, my Great Grandfather, Capt. David Beckwith Beebe, legend has it that he went to the California Gold Rush in 1849 and died at sea on his return voyage, buried at sea around the horn of Panana. Lately I came across David Beckwith Beebe "died 1853, New London, CT" which makes me wonder if he did go to California. He had been sea captain, then moved to Ohio and became a farmer. Maybe the sea lured him back home. However, I did not find his name listed in any cemetery there. I have searched ship passenger lists, too, but did not find him there either.

Thank you Susan! And the two of you have been so helpful. And can you believe I just visited family in Erie but totally forgot my family tree notes so that I could do some research. I may also try the cemetery where James is buried. I once got some very valuable info from them on another family line.

His middle name may represent a virtue, but in colonial New England, such a name generally represented a familial last name. I think that your best bet to find out who his parents were is with the death certificate. Pa is not the easiest, but if his wife was the informant for a certificate, she should be pretty accurate. I can check the Waterford town hall to see if there are any transactions for Thaddeus that reference a son named James. Best of luck.

Yes, the name Noble could be his mother' maiden name, unless it was used to represent a virtue, such as "Faith" "Hope" "Charity" I had a friend with the first name of "True." There may be newspaper archives as well as church records of baptisms and marriages, but you have to google the location for names of churches and newspapers (if they still exist). Many cemeteries also list the deceased on line. Some of my information had to be requested by phone and a fee sent in for copies.

Yes, I agree with you about the true ages of people in those times. My own Beebe family members would not reveal their ages because they were afraid of losing employment, being considered too old to work. My aunt did not want anyone to know she was receiving Social Security income.
I didn't know my own father's real age until he died.
Asking anyone how old they were was not acceptable.
Thank you for instructions on doing an exact match.
I will try it. P.S. The name NOBLE may not be in my family tree, but who knows. I keep finding new names.

Actually, I tried a search on a hunch as well. Very often last names show up as middle names in subsequent generations, and sometimes even as first names. If you do a family trees search with exact matches only, you then can click on Ancestry world tree entries. When the new screen appears, you can put in the last name with either an exact or soundex match and put in the last name of the possible spouse. The results should show any combination of names like Beebe linked with Noble that are listed. It's pretty straightforward to then look for the dates and places that might be appropriate. I have to say I wonder whether or not James lied about his age to go to sea early-undoubtedly not uncommon.

Susan, thanks for the tips. I do have the census records you mentioned. I do wonder about James' DOB too. The date I have is listed on his wife's application for a widow's pension.

And oh, I have a copy of an old photo of his wife Mary standing in front of their house at 544 E 5th! It was part of my mother's collection. I never thought to look into the home purchase. I do know when & where he was baptized as an adult so thank you for mentioning that also.

Hi again. Just a possibility that might be legit, but possibly never provable. If James' middle name was Noble, I would wonder if he might be a son of Thaddeus Beebe and Syble Noble of the New London/Waterford area. Thaddeus was the son of Simeon Beebe and Jerusha Maynard and was mentioned in a line entry in the Waterford Town book dated May 3, 1813. The town "bound out a poor boy by the name of Thaddeus Beebe (by the request of his grandfather, Mr. Stephen Maynard) to Charles Hill of Montville."Waterford Town book, 1801-1834. Stephen Maynard mentioned as grandfather to the young boy, was the Stephen, son of David and Rebekah, who married a Sarah Fitch in New London on 11 Jan 1764. Their daughter Jerusha was apparently born on 24 Aug 1768 and her age would be appropriate for Thaddeus' birth by about 1800. Thaddeus and Syble (Noble) Beebe did have a son Samuel Ira born abt. 1824. James Noble Beebe could conceivably have been Samuels' sibling. Anyway, just a thought, and good luck again.

Good luck with getting James' parents' names on his death certificate. James shows up in three of the U.S. census records in Erie, Pa, and interestingly his birth date varies slightly in several. In 1870, he is listed as James N. Beebe (Ancestry picked up the middle initial incorrectly as a "Y")on page #1. James' date of birth was given as 1831. In 1880, he can be found in the Erie district #145 on page 45,listed along with his wife Mary and daughter Mary E. His age that year was given as 45, indicating a birth date of 1835. By the census of 1900, James was retired from the water and was working as a church janitor. A birth year of 1835 shows in that census. Between the census years of 1900 and 1910, James dies and Mary is listed as a widow. On records where both a year and date for James' birth appear, Jan. of 1835 seems consistent. Since at least the census of 1900, James and family has been living at a home they own, 544 Fifth (or East Fifth) Street, Erie. If the death certificate doesn't pan out, I would look at their home purchase, as well as check area churches for marriage and birth information. Witnesses and Godparents can be great info. sources. Additionally, checking out small area newspapers might yield an obituary that could fill in some of the gaps. Good luck.
