Which post do you mean by "my post on the boards"? Can you help?

The marriage record of William BELT, Fairplay, Polk, MO, 24 Jan. 1895, says that the bride Allice HOLDEN was underaged, married with written consent of her mother.

In 1900, MO, BELT, Wm. was 35, b. Mar. 1865 [?]; Allice, 21, b. May 1879; Charles, 5, b. Mar. 1895; Mary, 2, b. Jan. 1898.

In 1910, MO, BELT, Wm., 40, MO IN MO; Florence A., 31, KY KY KY; Charlie, 14; Mary E., 10; Lula B., 8; Martha E., 6; & Lizzie M., 4.

In 1920, Quapaw, Ottawa, OK, William, 49; Alice, 40; Charles, 24; Martha, 16; Lizzie, 14; Florence, 6.

In 1880, MO, all born in Missouri, OSBURN, Jesse, 39; Ellen, 27; Lucy, 6; & stepson William BELT, 10.

I cannot find which William BELT the above was. The most likely father seems to be Charles Nelson BELT, b. 1846/7, Indiana, son of Lorenzo BELT & Anna KETCHAM. married 15 Jan. 1846, Adams Co., IN. In 1850, they were of Adams Co., IN; in 1856, Canaan, Cerro Gordo, IA; & in 1860, Swan Twp., Taney Co., MO. Charles served for the Union in Co. C, 46th MO Infantry. Charles N. BELT m. 8 June 1870, Moniteau Co., MO, Martha McGINNIS.

Did Charles N. BELT have a brief prior marriage to Nancy C. Ellen STROUD, and was she the Ellen who was 27 in 1880, wf/o Jesse OSBURN?

Is William the William BELT who d. 1 Dec. 1928 Hockerville, Ottawa Co., OK?

I am puzzled by a Frederick County Maryland record I found regarding the John TYLER (1763-1841) estate. The 4th and Final Accounting recorded in TS5/526,527,528 dated May 12, 1852 included a distribution "To Susan BELT, William BELT, Trueman BELT and Robert BELT, children of intestates sister Elizabeth BELT, also deceased".

Samuel BELT was not mentioned. So, he remained "unfound" [for lack of a better word] as far as the Maryland court was concerned.

Your scenerio is still plausible, given the activities you pointed out which were taking place in the country at the time. I hope you have success finding positive proof.

Thanks for the reply. Another abstract of a will of Montgomery Co., MD: Sarah BRISCOE, pr. 6 Nov. 1799. Witnesses John CHAMBERS & John BELT. Codicil, 1 Jan. 1799, wit. John TUMBELL {sic}, Benj. RICKETTS, Marry {sic} HARRISON. Codicil mentioned Sarah's husband Robert BRISCOE. His will, pr. 28 May 1798, mentioned his wife's grandsons named CAISE, sons of Margaret CAISE, dau/o Sarah BRISCOE.

Have you found any BRISCOE connection?

I Googled the names and found that a John TURNBULL m. Sarah BELL {sic} & had Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Wm., & John. John TURNBULL, b. 27 Dec. 1780, m. 11 July 1801, Montgomery Co., MD, Mary TANNEHILL, dau/o Carlton TANNIHILL. I think John TURNBULL who m. Sarah was the one who died in 1813, and Sarah was actually Sarah BEALL, b. 1754, dau/o John BEALL, b. 1728, & Mary DENT, b. 1731. The 1801 marriage is verified by MANUEL's Montgomery Co. M. Licenses.

Never give up!

I'm pretty much as positive as I can be about the Turnbull name right now. It is from Rufus' War of 1812 Pension. He lists his marriage to Sarah Turnbull as December 10, 1824 in Fayette Co., Kentucky. I've looked in a little bit to Turnbull-Belt connection and it does appear as thought he families were pretty connected back in Maryland. I still need to figure out what Sarah it is and you are correct, it may be a married name, not a maiden name.

Until your reply my best guess was that it was Sarah Beall Turnbull, born November 4, 1802 in Montgomery County, MD, daughter of John and Mary Turnbull.

This sounds promising: Frederick County, Maryland, Equity, 205-238, ca. 1842, William TYLER, et al, vs Thomas TURNER. Dr. John TYLER dsp 1841, leaving brothers Wm. & Grafton TYLER and several deceased siblings including Elizabeth BELT, whose ch. were Wm., Robert, Truman, & Susan of Prince George's County, and "Samuel BELT - Mexico, still alive?"

That must mean that Elizabeth's son Samuel had gone to Mexico, possibly as a soldier, in the years preceding the Mexican War.

Elizabeth must have been the Elizabeth TYLER who m. 4 Feb. 1792, Humphrey BELT, Jr., per G. BRUMBAUGH's Maryland Records...Prince George's Co. M. Licenses.

The Samuel BELT who m. Helen TAYLOR must have been in Texas when they married in 1834 because censuses show all of their ch. b. Texas, beginning with John M., b. 1835 (15 in 1850), & her family supposedly moved there before 1830. In 1850, her brother George TAYLOR was 17, b. TX.

Are you positive that Sarah's maiden name was Turnbull? Yearbook of the American Clan Gregor Society Vol. 47, 1963, says that L. B. MAGROODER m. 11 Jan. 1826, Fayette Co., KY, Sarah B. TURNBULL, bondsman Rufus BELT.

Since Rufus was probably 34 at his marriage in 1824, perhaps Sarah had a prior marriage. If she was at least as old as Rufus, she could have had an early marriage, say in 1807, at age 17, so that she could have a daughter born ca. 1808, marrying in 1826.

Since (we think) Sarah had only four children after her marriage in 1824, that would also fit that she was older at marriage.

The families show an early connection. John TURNBULL witnessed the will of John BELT made in 1811, pr. 1814, Montgomery Co. , MD.

Clan Gregor, in 1915, reported that John TURNBULL purchased "Magruder's Farm," Montgomery Co., MD, but died before final payment. It went to his heirs in 1816: Mary, wf/o John YOUNG, Margaret & Elizabeth DICKERSON, & John, Wm., James, & Rebecca TURNBULL.

John TURNBULL could have been the one born in 1764, St. Mary's County.

MANUEL's Montgomery Co., MD, Marriages:

John TURNBULL m. 11 July 1801, Mary TANNIHILL
Margaret TURNBULL [b. 1788], married 6 Dec. 1801, Nathan DICKERSON
Elizabeth TURNBULL m. 18 Sep. 1806, John DICKERSON
James TURNBULL m. 9 Jan. 1812, Rebecca BELT
Rebecca TURNBULL m. 11 Feb. 1823, Christopher OWINGS
William TURNBULL m. 12 Dec. 1826, Harriet DORSEY.

Happy Hunting!

You're welcome.

This illustrates the importance of being specific in posting all you know about the main person you're researching, listing females by their maiden names, and capitalizing the full surname. I thought that Humphreys was the middle name and that you were looking for Oma BELT.

The 1910 census at FamilySearch.org has, in Magisterial District 5, Crittenden County, KY, HUMPHREYS, Calvin E., 29; Cordelia, 28; Virgie C., 9; William V., 7; Edward G., 4; Katie O., 2. McGLELLIN, Gracie P., 11.

Katie O. was Katie Oma, daughter of Calvin Edward HUMPHREY[S} & Cordelia LYNN.

Carmon Hobart BELT (1 Dec. 1896, Crittenden Co., KY - 11 Oct. 1991, Crittenden Co., KY) was son of Robert Middleton BELT & Delila CLARK. He was Hobert C. on the Social Security Death Index and Hobart Carmen on WW I draft registration. The Kentucky Death Index online also verifies the dates.

Do you have the obituary for Carmon Hobart BELT?

Robert is on the 1880 census database, Fords Ferry, Crittenden, KY, BELT,
L., 45; Caroline, 44, they & parents b. Tennessee. Ch. b. KY:
Sons W. J., 18; T. D., 14; Robt., 8
Daus. O. B., 11; A., 10; M. E., 5.

MD 5, Crittenden Co., KY, 1900, BELT
Robert M., b. May 1872; Dillie, b. Nov. 1874; sons Frank J., Carmon H., & Guy.

1910, MD 5, Crittenden, KY, BELT, Robert M., 37; Dillie, 35; Frank, 15; Hobert, 13; Guy, 10; Kate, 8; Rob., 6; Susie, 4; Randel, 1 y., 1 mo.

FindaGrave: Love Cem., New Salem, Crittenden, KY
James Lafayette BELT (25 Je. 1835, Wilson Co., TN - 28 Aug. 1894, Crittenden Co., KY; son of Jeremiah Jacob BELT & Mantania JACOBS)
m. 24 Je. 1860, Crittenden Co., Nancy Caroline MILLIKAN.
Father of Martha Jane, William Jerry, Thomas Dotson, Arbelle, Mary Almeda, Robert Middleton, & Mary Evaline BELT.

Vicki Beard Thompson has posted quite a bit about this family, back to Robert M. BELT, and she includes Carmon/Hobart's daughter, Wanda BELT but has nothing further on her. Google "Beard & Fraley Family Tree."

Thanks for the reply. I had found most of what you posted and I recently found that she had a child,Wanda Belt, born 1934 with Hobart Carmon Belt who is listed with her in the MO 1930 census. But I am sure she had two children(I think both were girls) with Leroy Beavers sometime in the late 1930's. Leroy then went on to have four more children with two different women - not sure about the marriages to any of them, but he did divorce his last wife, Opal Lunsford Beavers, in CA. Am waiting for an obit for Oma from Kentucky.

Do you have the names of the parents of Oma BELT? Could "Rnie" below have been Oma?

In Crittenden Co., KY, 1910, BELT, William J., 47; Loula V., 38
Roy L., 19; Ada, 18; Bettie, 16; Viola, 10; Grady, 7; Ray, 5; Rnie, 3; unnamed twins, aged 4 mos.
BELT, Nancy C., 74; MILAKAN, Marthy, 76.

Do you have a birth, marriage, or death certificate, obituary, or burial record for Oma (7 Je. 1907 - Dec. 1987, Crittenden Co., KY) ? Dates are verified by Social Security Death Index.

Census, 1930, St. Louis (city), MO, Oma BELT, 22, b. KY.

Leroy BEAVERS (23 Aug. 1915 - 13 May 1972, North Bend, Coos Co., OR) is listed on SSDI and the Oregon Death Index.

RootsWeb Family Trees: Leroy Wesley BEAVERS (23 Aug. 1915, Colbert, Bryan Co., OK - 13 May 1972, North Bend, Coos Co., OR, bu. Lot 29, Block 47, Sunset Memorial Park, Coos Bay, Coos Co., OR) was son of John Wesley BEAVERS, b. 5 Oct. 1879, [TX], & Letha / Leether / Luther Pearl GRAHAM, b. 18 Nov. 1888. RootsWeb lists a different family in Cook Co., TX, 1920, but this looks like the family in Tillman Co., OK, BEAVERS
John, 38, & Lavella, 21, both b. TX
Leroy, 4 y., 3 mo.; Lutha, 2 y., 6 mo., (female)
BERRY, Tom, 24, b. TX.

FindaGrave has many BELT burials in Crittenden Co., KY. The earliest birth date I see is for Arthur Harrison BELT (7 Oct. 18[17?] - 17 Jan. 1875). There are several messages about Arthur and family on RootsWeb > surname Belt.

There was an Oma May BELT (8 Sep. 1908 - 27 Oct. 1942, wife of Wiliam BELT, b. ca. 1900), who died near Malden, Dunklin Co., MO, following childbirth.

What other clues about the Belt family do you have that might help with the search?

African American Belt, Belts, Beltz, Baltz, Bealts Families

I am searching for African American Belt families between 1830 and 1948. More specifically, I am looking for information on Mary A. Belt and any of her family members -- parents, siblings, etc. She was born between 1920 and 1930 in the month of December we believe.

I currently do not have any information on her parents or siblings. All I know is her name and not even sure of the proper spelling. It may be Belt, Belts, Beltz, or Baltz.

If you have a Mary in your line, please contact me so we can compare notes. I have her descendants, I just don't have any information on her parents, siblings or ancestors.

I have spoken with others who are having a challenging time researching African American Belt families. If you are, please post your requests here so we can try to work together.

I am researching this entire line as far back as I can go so if I can help someone with a quick lookup, I am happy to do so.

Belt and Ella Kennard but I am stuck on grandparents.I have a death record that states his father was JC Belt and his mother was Nany ann Hollyfield. I have read another message board that someone wrote stating that James C Belt was James Calpolk Belt but also went by Jim Garrison. For many years my grandmother told my mom that the Belt's really weren't Belt's. That something bad happened and the family changed it's name. So I tend to believe what this person wrote but have found no evidence to back it up. Although it could explain why I have hit a brick wall. I saw another message on the genforum message board that stated his father was Johnathan Garrison Belt and his mother was Nacy Elizabeth Holderfield. Not sure if this is correct either or where these people have gotten their information.

Any ideas?

DL, I couldn't find anyone to quite fit your posted information about William Richard BELT, son of James C.

I did find Jim [Crow] BELT, son of Sid & Ollie, with them in 1910.

In 1930, Sweetwater, Nolan, TX, there were Jim C. BELT, 21, b. OK, & wf. Vada, 17, b. TX. However, those seems pretty recent to be your gg grandparents.

Dresden Cemetery has William Richard BELT (11 Nov. 1888, Upshur Co., TX - 28 Feb. 1966), husband of Mary Sarah WINTERS. However, the death record has a different birth date: William Richard BELT (13 Nov. 1887, TX - 28 Feb. 1966, Corsicana, Navarro, TX, bu. Dresden Cem.) His death record says he was born in Texas, but his parents are not named

His World War II registration (copy at FamilySearch.org) has William Richard BELT, b. 13 Nov. 1888, Kemp County, TX, of Angus, Navarro, TX, contact person Mary BELT.
Preston,
I know this message is way late but I have a great grandfather that lived in Navarro County Texas whose name was William Richard Belt. I wonder if that is the William your grandad is thinking of. His father was James C. Belt and his brother James Edward Belt of Delight Arkansas. I have seen other Belt's in Navarro County and always wondered if they were relatives but have yet to make a connection.

BELT: Rachel, Richard, John 4, 3, 2, Humphrey, 1

My earliest proven ancestor in this line is Elizabeth HOOKER, who married Jonathan HAY, 1809, Fairfield Co., OH. I have the marriage record, but they were married by Richard HOOKER, J. P., and the record was not dated. I'm sure she was daughter of Samuel HOOKER and Rachel BELT, dau/o Richard BELT, but I haven't been able to prove that. Rachel [BELT] HOOKER left a will but only named the son who had been caring for her. Samuel didn't leave a will. His unmarried brother Richard HOOKER left a will that named some of Samuel's children. I think the problem was that Elizabeth and her husband Jonathan HAY moved to Wayne & Wood Cos., Ohio; then to Wayne Co., IL, and Bad Ax/Vernon Co., WI.

If I ever find the proof to connect Elizabeth HOOKER to her parents, then BELT is from Rachel (b. 1767), Richard (1735), John (ca. 1703), John (ca. 1678), John (ca. 1650), & Humphrey.

There's a question on GenForum > BELT about Marcus L. "Mark" BELT, Sr. & Jr., who were from Missouri but went to Texas for a few years, returning to Higginsville, MO, in 1887. The author is trying to determine if Pearland, TX, formerly known as Mark Belt, was originally named for Marcus L. BELT.

Google Books has Portrait and Biographical Records of Lafayette and Saline Counties, MO, with biographies of Marcus, Sr. & Jr. This appears to be the line:

Humphrey (1), John (2) , Joseph (3), John (4), Marsham (5), William, William, Marcus, Marcus BELT.
Jane Ann Bridgette Beltchourton [1611-?] Maiden Name Changed To "Belt"

I found out that Jane Ann Bridgette's maiden name was Beltchourton, but when she came to America she changed her maiden to Belt and I know that she married Edward Moss [1610-1685] and I know that they had the following children:

1. Thomas Moss [1631-1678]
2. William Henry Moss [1634-1685]
3. John Moss [1634-?]
4. Robert Moss [1635-1685]
5. Edward Moss, Jr [1637-1716]

I was wondering if anyone happens to have any information on the "Belt"s or the "Beltchourton" and who Jane Ann Bridgette's parents were?

Thanks In Advance,
K.
