Patrick Henry Bence

Does anyone have info on the parantage of Patrick Henry "P.H." Bence (1838-1895) who lived, died and is buried in Three Springs, Huntingdon County, PA? I have been looking with no success.

In 1860, he married Margaret Jane Drake (1840-1863) of Saltillo, PA.
In 1862, they had a daughter, Anna Mary Bence Keffer (1862-1941).
In 1863, Margaret J. Drake Bence died and is buried in the Saltillo Cemetery, PA.
In 1864, PH joined the Union Army. He mustered out in Aug. 1865.

In 1866, he married Frances Ellen Heeter (1846-1913) of Three Springs. By this time PH was fully settled in Three Springs, PA, was the cabinet maker for the area and was active in the community, church and school. PH & Frances had 3 children: Vida Elizabeth Bence (1867-1868), Margaret Jane Bence Bawden (1868-abt 1945) & Bruce Talmaze (1874-1968).

In 1895, PH died (Jan 3, 1895) following a couple years of illness. He is buried in the Three Springs Cemetery with his wife (Frances), daughter (Vida) and daughter-in-law, Alice Barber Bence (Bruce's 1st wife). His obituary in the Huntingdon Journal refered to him as "Henry" rather than "PH" or "Patrick" as in other references found.

In 2003, a message board posting mentioned that Patrick Henry Bence's grandson, Frank Patrick Bence (Bruce's son), responded that PH may have been orphaned and was possibly from Indiana, PA (where many other Bence families reside). Not of this has been substantiated to date.

Anna Mary Bence Keffer is my husband's g-grandmother. So, if you have info that might help, it would be most apprciated.

Why was a Ren(t)fro child named after a Bence?

Does anyone know why Robert Ren(t)fro and Catherine Goodwin (Goodwin may be maiden or married, unsure) named a child John Bence Rentfro in 1824? They were living on Cherokee land in northern Alabama at the time, moved to McMinn county Tennessee in 1826. Another son of theirs also named one of his children John Bence. Does anyone have any idea if there's any relation or if they just thought enough of a Bence to name a child after him? Robert was born in either TN, KY, or VA, Catherine in NC.

BENCE, Francis

Francis BENCE was born in the 1790's, place unknown. He fought in the War of 1812, served with "P. Yanny's Co NY Mil"
In 1834 he married Magdalena HARE/HARR in Potter County, PA. This was his 2nd wife - first wife died because of childbirth. Magdalena supposed to have been born in Alsace, immigrated in 1820, but this is not verified. In 1843 he received land in WI and lived in Washington and Waukesha Counties the rest of his life and he and Magdalena are both buried in E.M. Church cemetery in Menominee Falls WI.

They are reported to have had 12 children, although I can only find the names of 10 (listed on his will). They are George, Michael, Sophia (Neibur), Francis, William, Mary E. (Young), Lena or Helena (Downing), Barbara (Steinmayer), Martin, and Lewis.
George, Francis, Michael and William all served in Civil War.
I know almost nothing about the girls. I am interested in finding parents of Francis and Magdalena, and their siblings. I would like to know where and when Francis was born. At least 3 of the children - Francis, Lewis, and Michael later settled in IA. I am interested in finding descendants of all their children.

I

Francis Bence is my gg-grandfather. I decend through his son William Bence born March 15, 1845. William married Mary Rein on January 19, 1864. They had 4 children; William, Francis, Adeline and Joseph. Adeline is my grandmother. My mother Rose Dengler told me, (this has been handed down for serveral generations), that her mother Adeline Bence said "that Francis Bence (1790) and his wife migrated to Waukasha, WI from Wilkes Barre, PA. They were Quakers and had 9 children".
If this information matches yours it looks like we decend from the same Francis Bence (1790). I have additional information and am willing to share.
Please e-mail me through my friend Judith as I am not on the internet yet.
