Mary Ann Bendon (and beyond)

Hi there!

I'm much newer to this game than many others, but about four months ago I decided to research into my mother's mother's side of the family because it has been almost a complete mystery to us. My Granny always said her grandmother was a Portuguese Jew, but there wasn't a lot of information about her grandmother other than her name (Mary Ann Bendon) and the fact that, after her first husband (Edwin Herbert Anthony) died, she got re-married to a man named Fredrick Tizley. Just today I finally discovered Mary Ann's father's name was Elias Bendon (occupation: vocalist?) from the marriage certificate for Mary Ann (nee Bendon) Anthony to Fredrick Tizley.

This whole line of the family are all east end of London folk (Mile End, Stepney, etc.) but I'm stuck once again. It looks like Elias may indeed have originally been an Abendana instead of Bendon, but I can't be sure. I know I must be on the right track though and this does seem to be the missing Sephardic Jewish connection.

Would anyone be willing to help me out with this search?

Best wishes,

Rachel

My grandfather was Judah George Bendon but was known a J. George Bendon and never used Judah. He passed away in the mid-1950's. I was told by my mother and my aunt, who was J. George's daughter that our surname was Abendana or Abendano and I was told we emigrated from Portugal to the UK probably during the time of the Inquisition. I would not entirely rule out Spain. I have never heard of a Ralph Bendon but my grandfather may well have had a brother but I never knew of him and there is no one alive left to ask. I was 9 when my grandfather died. J. George had a daughter, Addie and two sons Lou and Jack. Lou died in WWII and Jack was my father. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. My father was born in Freehold, NJ and there are pictures of him in front of the Bendon General Store.

Mark,
My grandmother was Amelia Bendon who was born in 1906 in Bethnal Green. She died when my Mother was young. My mother told me that there was a Jewish connection because the Jewish faith is passed through the female line and she understood her Mother (Amelia) was probably Jewish. I do have a family tree drawn up by my Uncle which goes back to the early eighteenth century however this doesn't indicate relgion. The Bendon family have lived in Bethnal Green, Shoreditch, Mile End Road (i.e. real 'eastenders').

Hey guys,

So it seems that two things happened in the mid 19th century -- The Abendanas of Bethnal Green area changed their name to Bendon, and a Charles Bendon (who according to family trees has no recorded connection) appears in Bethnal Green, according to census data having been born in Shropshire.

Considering the scarcity of the name, the proximity of the families and the mysteriousness of Charles Bendon's past (he's thought to be a member of the Banton family of Shropshire, but the evidence isn't conclusive -- basically that Bendon sounds a bit like Banton. :) ) could it be that Charles Bendon was born of the Abendana family?

As a Bendon myself (and probably ancestor of Charles) I'd love to know the lineage of my name because we've suspected we may possibly be Jewish considering we come from Bethnal Green. :)

Thanks everyone!

Mark

Hi,

I was interested in your comment "Robert was born in 1836 in Ilton, Somerset. His parents were from Old Cleeve, Somerset, just west of Watchet/St. Decumans. My great-great grandfather was from the same local family (cousin of Robert Bindon/Bendon)". I am actually related to some Bindons and the earliest one I have is Robert Bindon 1725, married Susanna Westcombe in 1751in Tauton and they moved to Nettlecombe, Near Old Cleeve.
It's interestign to note that although they are called Bindon they have a Daughter who was Baptised Bending. A variation in the same family!
Thanks
Ivor

Hi I recently came back to this site with new info regarding my grandfather William Bendon and I'm wondering if anyone can help me...I've found out his father's name was also William Bendon, he was born in 1893 and died in 1978 at 94 yrs old (in Prescott, Ont). He was married to a Georgina Macdonald, born 1899, died July 14, 1958 (in Montreal, Que). His brother's name wasn't Jack but John A. and he was a signalman for the RCCA during WWII. John died in Nov. 1988. My grandfather was a Bombardier for the RCAF and died in Feb. 1988. All four of them are buried in Prescott,Ontario. We know they lived in Montreal in the early 40's and remained there until Georgina's death. I cannot find any birth, death, marriage or even immigration records for any of them. I've searched all countries but without birthdates etc. I'm lost. Can anyone help me? I really want to find info on them as my mom's adopted and I'd like to do this for her as she's 65 yrs old.

Hello cousin...;-)

I've got Walter Richard Bendon, born Jan 16, 1913, son of Walter Bendon and Anne Anita Hartrey. He had 6 siblings, but your oder seems a bit off. I have Walter as the 2nd child of seven. Walter and Ann were married in 1910 in the Cardiff area, and Margaret A was born 1911. Mary followed in 1914, Theresa in 1918, John H in 1920, Richard Arthur in 1922, and Charles Hartrey Bendon in 1924. I have death years for most of them (except John, Margaret, and Theresa).

Contact me at lucas_mccaw@yahoo.com and we can go over more of this.

TTYS,
Lucas McCaw
Alberta, Canada

>Am just starting on a quest to trace the Cardiff Bendons >but have very little information currently. I am looking >at finding Walter Richard Bendon, who was the fifth of 7 >children. His birthday was 16 Jan and I think he was born >around 1910-1915. His siblings were (in birth order) >Margaret, Mary, Teresa, Charlie, (WR), Arthur and John. If >you have information on these or any other Bendons would >love to hear from you.

Am wondering if you have a Christian or Austin(Augustine) BENDEN who may have been born about 1874. I can find no record of his birth. Since he change both where he and his father where born in various us census--- Vermont, New Hampshire, New York --- I wonder if he or his father could have been from Canada. He always lists his mother as being from Ireland. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Opps almost forgot He also went by the name Joseph Austin and eventually just Austin BENDEN.
Thanks, Nora Benden Fraher - New Jersey

several different Bendon families - Somerset origins

I've been reading the messages in this newsgroup, and the general concensus is that ALL Bendons are originally Jewish. The name was Abendana, shortened to Bendon probably in the late 1700s or early 1800s. There were many Jewish Bendons living in the London area in the 19th centruy. Most of them are easy to recognize, as they used very traditonal names like Rachel, Napthali, Judah, Aaron, etc.

BUT, NOT ALL THE BENDONS ARE JEWISH. There are several English Bendon families who have no relation at all to the Jewish Abendannas. In England, Bendon is a surname that comes from Somerset. Most records show it as being originally BINDON. Varaints of the name include Binden, Binding, Benden and Bending. I have been researching this family for 6 years now, and have a massive database of BMDs, census, and parish records.

Od special interest to me is the Cardiff Bendon family. THey are NOT Jewish. Most of them seem to be descended from a Robert Bindon and Elizabeth Pine. Robert was born in 1836 in Ilton, Somerset. His parents were from Old Cleeve, Somerset, just west of Watchet/St. Decumans. My great-great grandfather was from the same local family (cousin of Robert Bindon/Bendon)

Robert moved around a lot, had several children in Pawlett (SOM), and eventually settled in Cardiff. Because of the difference in local accents, and the fact that Robert probably couldn't write, BINDON became BENDON. I have traced this family up to the mid 1920s.

I would be very interested in hearing from any Cardiff Bendons, especially SAIRA BENDON, who posted several messages 3 years ago on this site.

Thank you,
Lucas McCaw
Canada.

Thanks for the info. I hope Grandma remembers the middle name. I have also gotten help on Simon Bendon from Josephine Mercer of New York and Patrick G. McHenry of Hawthorne, California. Coast-to-coast Bendon's!

I am building a database of personal data on each of the 1,900 men who served with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, and you have added another small piece to that. I am in the midst of writing a new regimental history, one, I hope, that will have some general appeal. By any chance, does any of Simon's Civil War correspondance - especially from the 87th - still exist?
