Hi to all of you. In Sweden as children were their name would be the gathers or mothers name and then son or dottor. My first ansters we have traced were Bengt Hallstenson, 1727, then Bengt errson 1799-1877, nestcarl nilson,1829-1911, Olof Bengston 1832-1919. The wife's were Bengtsdotter, jansdotter, nilsdotter, so man have the same last names all tho they come from diferant reigens in Sweden. It hard to find records that match because many have the same last names. also many changed the spelling when thet got to the USA/

I have been puzzled with this line too! I have a letter from the 70's. I am a Bengston, yet according to my G-grandfathers cousin, she thought her mother's maiden name was Benson (the marriage record says Bengtson). She also referenced cousins with the name Benson. My GG-grandfather was Andrew, he was in Cook Co., IL from about 1882-1891 then Waterloo, IA.

In my tree, it was Bengtson upon coming to the US. 1 line did change it to Bengston, and I am finding that in Sweden it may have been Bengtsson. I have not found any Benson, but with some Civil War records mine was spelled Bankson, Bergson, etc..

Good Luck with this one, it's been driving me crazy!

I don't know if this helps, but my grandmother's name was Bengtson. However, my mother and I found that at times she used the name Benson. Many people from Sweden changed their names. My one great-grandfather was Nils Persson in Sweden but became Nels Peterson in the U. S.--by his choice.

Reduced price for DNA testing

As group administrator of the Bankston DNA surname project, I’d like to pass along news about a limited-time price reduction for DNA testing from our testing firm. Unfortunately, we receive very little or no advance word of these promotions, so as you can see the limited time price reduction begins June 9th, 2009 and only runs to June 24th, 2009.

Offer summary:

• Y-DNA37+mtDNA for $119. (The regular project price is $248 – a reduction of more than 50%)
• The promotion will begin on June 9, 2009 and will end on June 24, 2009
• Kits ordered in this sale must be paid for by June 30, 2009

If you have been considering Y-DNA testing for your Bankson/Bankston/Bengtson line, this is an excellent opportunity to get a 37 marker test at a greatly reduced price, and I would urge you to order before the deadline. If you have any questions about Y-DNA testing for genealogy, or the order process, feel free to email me at: kenparks@earthlink.net

To order a test and join the Bankston DNA Surname Project:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Bankston

Anna Bengtson (married name) - Halland Sweden

Hello everyone. I am trying to locate the daughter of my great-great grandmother, Hannah Sophia Olson. Anna was born most likely out of wedlock to my gg grandmother around 1890 in Halland Sweden. My gg grandmother was not married (to our knowledge). Hannah Sophia Olson was born on 22 May 1871 in Sweden.

From what we understand, Anna was adopted and raised in the Halland area by a sibling of Hannah's. We do not know Anna's maiden name. Her married last name was Bengtson.

Hannah emigrated to the United States around 1892. She was married to Peter August Johnson in Bolan, Iowa in 1894. They eventually settled in Barron County, WI, and had nine children together.

Any information on Anna would be greatly appreciated. I have a few photos that she sent to Wisconsin (to her half-sister Bena). One of the photos is a family farm. Another photo is of her "Cousin Karl" with a girl friend. The third picture is her with various family members, including: Gösta, Hildur, Verner, and Thure. I do not know the last names.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The answers to your questions are easy but a bit complicated at the same time....
-----------------------------
Regarding your question about Ingars last name, have a look at this explanation:
http://www.genealogi.se/roots/nwonamn.htm

So the reason for her being listed as Persson is basically because her fathers first name was Per/Pehr, but it should really have been Persdotter (Pers daughter). So if your grandfather mentioned her as Johnsson/Johansson its all correct too as it was after 1900.

My family on my fathers side have had Persson as a last name for both males and females since 1700 sometime, and I don't have the explaination for that.

Its all very confusing but with some sort of logic to it...
-----------------------------
Not listing your grandfather Ivon:
I have only access to information up to 1900 (The CD Swedish population 1900) so your grandfather is not listed there as he was born 1903.
The online church books only lists people up to 1900 as well. Although you can write to the county archives and get a copy of his birth certificate.
-----------------------------
I thought for some reason that the entire family emigrated but that wasn't the case right? I found some of your grandfathers siblings on the CD Swedish death index 1947-2006, and the village Teckomatorp appears a few times:

Couldn't find Elin.

Gerda Blomberg, b. 4 February 1892 in Källs-Nöbbelöv, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Died 22 September 1973 in Eskilstuna Kloster, Eskilstuna kommun, Södermanland län, Södermanland. Married 3 May 1918 to Ernst Fritiof Blomberg, b. 21 February 1892 in Överselö, Södermanlands län, Södermanland. Died 30 May 1967 in Eskilstuna Kloster, Eskilstuna kommun, Södermanland län, Södermanland.

Karl Lauritz Bengtsson, b 27 June 1894 in Källs-Nöbbelöv, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Died 24 March 1859 in Källs-Nöbbelöv, Teckomatorps kommun, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Address: Källs Nöbbelöv 15:6. Married 21 March 1927 to: Maria Sabina Bengtsson, b. 27 October 1899 in Fjelie, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Died 22 November 1981 in Norra Skrävlinge, Svalövs kommun, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Address Föreningsgatan 22, 260 20 Teckomatorp.

Signe Ingeborg Tarring, b. 2 April 1897 in Källs-Nöbbelöv, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Died 14 September 1975 in Norra Skrävlinge, Svalövs kommun, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Married 6 April 1923 to Karl Edvin Tarring, b. 27 January 1896 in Billeberga, Malmöhus län, Skåne. Died 29 March 1961 in Norra Skrävlinge, Teckomatorps kommun, Malmöhus län, Skåne.

I couldn't find Lars.
-----------------------------
The best thing to do now if you want to find living relatives to your grandfathers siblings is to contact the county archives asking them to send you their estate inventories, where the children (if any) will be mentioned. Send them both husband and wifes information and tell them that you are just interested in finding out the names, birth data and place for the children.
The estate inventories are free of charge.
-----------------------------
For Gerda and her husband, write to:
http://tinyurl.com/6xssjr
Use the top email address which reads just "E-post"
-----------------------------
For Karl, his wife and Ingeborg and her husband, write to:
Statsarkivet in Malmö: http://tinyurl.com/6ryl7e
Fill out 1 form per person.

The online form is in Swedish, so I translated it via Google:
http://tinyurl.com/5syuln
Skip "Bouppteckningsnr (see bouppteckningsregister 1546-1967)"
-----------------------------
It will take a bit of time before you get an answer from them.
Please don't hesitate to contact me directly if you need help translating the estate inventories and finding living relatives when you have the documents.

All the best
Anna

Oh my Anna, all this information is incredible!!! I am starting to sift through it now. I have a few questions.

First, I have multiple documents in my Grandfathers hand showing his mother as Ingar Johnson. Why wouldn’t her last name have been Johnsdotter?

Second, the family info you provided shows Ingar last name as “Persson”, why do you think there’s a discrepancy?

Lastly, I don’t see my Grandfather Ivon listed as a sibling of Bengt and Ingar. Could it have been omitted for some reason?

Bengtson

I am looking for information about my grandmothers family. I started my search about two years ago this December, One of the problems I had was on till recently I was searching for the family of Florence M Benson born July 1889 died July 13 1914. her maiden name. Before she married my grand father Philip Carl Barg of Chicago. I came across an old bible of hers with Florence Bengtson written in it. So I have started all over again. Her mother name was Ida Lindh married to, I believe Jon Bengtson born around 1857 somewhere in Sweden.
I also found a burial permit list for Illinois listing addresses My great grand father Christ Barg lived at 45 Canalport in Chicago there was an Albert Bengtson living at 58 Canalport in Chicago, I think this is maybe how my Grand father Philip C Barg would have met Florence M Bengtson.

Any information will be appreciated

Cliff Barg cbargeagle@yahoo.com
