Benjamin Benn was my 2nd or 3rd Great-grandfather. I have some information such as his father was Robert Benn b. 1770 in Virginia. I have his mother as Ann Burton, but not sure of her, since several others have found sources listing the surname as Pinn, Payne, etc. My tree information is under Martin family tree (Ancestry . com) My great grandmother was Ada Alice Benn, daughter of Solomon. She married Hezekia Martin 1879. He died 1882, but I can't find any source for burial or his parents' names, so I'm at a brick wall so to speak.
Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. You can reply on message board or my email is billmartin39@gmail.com Thank you

I knew that Benn could be of Germanic origins, so was fascinated by your posting. That said, I have no further historical information for you. My Benn line lived in colonial New York with the Palatine "Germans" in the Hudson River Valley of the 17th Century.

I knew that there were many Benns from Germany, but have not been able to trace my Benn line there. The records I have go back to the 17th century and Benns (Bain or Ben) living in the Hudson Valley of colonial New York. They did live with the Palatine "Germans" (Germany was not really a country yet) as well as the Dutch of the Hudson Valley. The Palatine State or principality had been decimated by many years of European wars when the Benns fled from there.

Fascinating post, though. Thank you.

My great great grandfather is George Benn. He lived at least in the Siebenbürgen / Transylvania / Copşa Mare area of the Austrian-Hungarian empire (now Romania). Born at least before 1870.

He married a Maria (Mary) Schell.

They had five children; George, Fred, John, Mary, Rosina (Rose).

George Benn (Jr.) is my great grandfather. He was born in Jan of 1884 in Copşa Mare, Transylvania, Austro-Hungary (also known as the Siebenbürgen area). He immigrated to Cleveland, OH, USA in 1903.

Does anyone have any information regarding George (Sr.) or the Benns of this area? Could have immigrated to the Siebenbürgen area.

Does anyone know the connection between James McNabb Benn b. ca 1809 and Henry/Geroge Benn b. 1810. James married Hannah Elizabeth Long and Henry married Catherine Long. After Henry died, Catherine married Orin Baxter and James Benn was a witness at the wedding. On the 1851 census James is living next door to Catherine and her second husband and family. Were James and Henry/George brothers and were Hannah and Catherine sisters? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ruth

George Rex's boat "The Knysna" traded with St Helena Island and I think that the Benn family was possibly from St Helena Island but I fear that because of people shying away from Black roots, St Helena Island heritage have been shunned in past generations. Captain Harker landed in Knysna and that surname can be traced to St Helena too. From Merle Martin, South African St Helenian Heritage Association, saint.helena.island@gmail.com

Your Benn family and mine are related. I did some looking
and Herbert Benn is the son of John & Amelia Benn. John
is a brother to George Benn who is in my tree. Their
father was William Benn born in Ireland, and their mother,
was Anna Irene Farrell also born in Ireland.
So, that makes you a cousin.
I have been trying to find George & Mary's children. I
found Harry. He ended up in Massachusetts. The rest of
them, went to Canada. So, it is still an ongoing process
for them. Canadian records leave a lot to be desired.
Hope this helps.
Sharon

I need help to look for the family of my 3 great grandmother:
She was born in New York, re her obit: Her name was Mary Wells: Dc does not say much: Neither does her obit: It does say that she had a half-sister of New York... In the 1930's census I found a Rebecca Benn living with her husband; Elmer...in Athens, Green county, New York....and they were Cemetery caretakers..... My 3 great grandmother moved to Dorchester County, Maryland, after her husband died in 1917 she went back to live with her 1/2 sister for awhile until she remarried to a Greig and moved back to Maryland.... My family always said that she was Cree Indian..... Rebecca born around 1872 her sister Mary born around 1851 died 1942 died in Maryland....Any any help would help......ty

I am probaboy descended from the same Benn line. Your information, Keith, is close to mine but not exactly. These Benns were with the Palatine "Germans" (long before the state of Germany ever existed). They were desperate refugees from a part of Europe laid in ruins by the wars in the 1600s. One source thought that Hugh Benn (Bain) came from Scotland, but I have no reliable source for that. Benn is also a German patronymic. Since he was with the Palatines of the Hudson Valley, I naturally had to ask if he was actually a Palatine German, not Scottish. What do you think?

I need more geographic detail on where Jeanette lived and when.

I have an Antigen [possibly Annitje - Dutch diminuitive for Ann] (Decker) Benn married to John Bain/Benn. Ms Decker was born 17 Jan 1731, though this might have been a baptism date from the Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston, Ulster Co. NY. The Benns intermarried with the Dutch and Palatine (now Germany) settlers in the Hudson Valley of NY, so you will find Dutch and German given names among the Benns (Bains).

Anyway, this John Benn was a Loyalist during the American Revolution, and was a refugee to Ontario, Canada after the war where he got a land grant from the crown for his service to the English regent. None of us ever found out what happened to Annitje. Her name does not reappear in Canadian records.

Benn Family connection

Hi there,

I'm hoping to find information on a possible connection to my family tree. The name is Robert (middle initial possibly G) Benn. Birthdate would have been in the late 1940s, early 1950s. I know there is a Robert G Benn listed in Medicine Hat, AB, but wondered if anyone could help me fill in some blanks? The Robert I am inquiring about would have likely lived in Northern Ontario when he was young and in Kitchener, Ontario in the early 1970s. I don't know any additional family information unfortunately, but would appreciate receiving anything anyone may have. Thank you so much.

Lisa Harris

Hugh Benn (sr), 1771 - 1843, was married to Betsey Wilkerson. Betsey appears to have died circa 1821 in or near Windsor, Broome County, where the family pioneered a farm. The exact origins of Hugh Benn are uncertain, though there are many Hugh Benn/Bains from the Hudson Valley of NY.

Hello,

Also descended from the famous Hugh/Hugo Benn/Bain. Have you been in touch with Benn's from the Wallaceburg area? Could fill you in a bit if not.

By the way, I have been away from geneaological research for a few years. Last I looked into it, there were still no certain origins for Hugh though one line of inquiry led to Scotland. Have you come across any solid leads to Scotland or elsewhere?

I visited the Germantown, Kingston and New Pfalz areas a few years ago and there were English, Scots, French Huguenots and Dutch in the area around 1650-1700.

Best wishes.

Keith Benn

Hello, I have no idea if this could be useful but I had a somewhat distant relation named Orval (or Orville, I dont recall) in my hometown of Wallaceburg, Ontario. He was referred to as Orval Sr; his son Orval Jr may still be in the area, not sure. Antoher commenter mentioned an Orval in Corunna, which is not far from Wallaceburg, on the St Clair River, just south of Sarnia, Ontario (which is opposite Port Huron, Michigan).
