I am looking for information on Wm. R. Bennetts. He was born around 1804 in Cornwall(?). I think he married Elizabeth (but I could be wrong) and had 4 sons named William, John (b. 1832), Thomas (b. 1834), and Noah (b. 1836).
This is as far back as I can trace my family and I would be very gratefull to hear from someone that has more information.

WILLIAM HENRY BENNETTS IN AUSTRALIA

I am trying to identify William Henry Bennetts who was living in Crystal Street Broken Hill in 1915. He died in 1919 and is buried in Broken Hill. After my gt-grandmother Elizabeth Johnson nee Murphy(previously the widow of James Hockey)died in WA in 1913, three of the Hockey children were apparently sent to live with the Bennetts, including son Harold Hockey who in 1915 enlisted for WW1 and produced a letter from William Henry Bennetts stating he was Harold's uncle and guardian. The Hockeys were from Cornwall and lived in Clunes Victoria before Elizabeth took her family to WA, but I can't find any link between Bennetts and Hockey. Can anyone help me with this?

I see that this message is from 6 years ago! but I am researching my g.g.g grandfather James Bennetts from Camborne.

His son, my g.g. grandfather James Bennetts, (perhaps the brother of your relative Samuel?) was born in 1825 so his father could easily have been born in 1795. I was wondering if you ever found anything else out about him and how did you discover that his wife was Mary Vincent?

Sarah

Henry Bennetts ( or Bennett)

Trying to trace Henry Bennetts (or Bennett)roots back to England.

The US 1900 census shows his birth details as December, 1834, and his entry to the US as 1856. His death certificate shows his birth details as 16/12/1835. I believe that he, like many others from Corwall, emigrated to work in the copper mines of Michigan (Houghton County to be exact). His death certificate states his father's name as John Bennetts, but has no details of his mothers name. He married Caroline Gilbert at The North American Mine in Michigan on 16th Jan 1858 and they went on to have 15 children.

I've found baptism records in Cornwall for periods before Dec 1834 (too early) and the nearest record is 7 Feb 1835 (parents John and Jennifer).

Any help/information would be most welcome !
Hi Bev

Sorry but I cannot see a connection at the moment. The Bennetts I am looking for came from Stoke Climsland a place just in Cornwall and north west of Plymouth. Your Bennetts are on the north coast of Cornwall quite some distance away. Bennetts are not my family and I have been looking for an old friend so have only concentrated on her direct line. The Frederick in her tree was born in Telluride, Colorado and returned to England with his mother sfter his father's death.

I have found a Frederick Charles Bennetts who married Caroline Phillips Q1 1889 Truro v5c p232. There is a birth of a ? James Frederick Bennetts Q2 1889 Truro v5c p133 (may have died prior to 1891 census). If you do not have any certificates I would suggest you begin with the marriage certificate as a starting point as St Agnes is in the District of Truro, Cornwall.

Try and Google Bennetts in Cornwall as I think there is information there.

Regards Pam

Hi

I'm looking for information about my 2nd Great Grandparents, Richard Bennetts and Eliabeth (Eliza) Osborne who came out to Australia from Cornwall on the ship GILMORE, arriving at Port Adelaide South Australia on 05 July 1857. My Great Grandfather was four at the time, he was born on 20 June 1853 at Tavistock Devonshire.

My Great Grandfather Richard married Elizabeth Ann Lee on 10 May 1875 at Kadina. They had 7 children, Richard (1876-); Florence Ethel (Flo) (1878-); Sampson (1880-1887); Ernest (1884-1978); Emily (1888-1976); Samuel (1891-) and my Grandfather, Joseph Howard Lee Bennetts (1897-1981).

Richard and Eliza lived at Wallaroo Mines (Kadina) South Australia and are both buried at the Kadina Cemetery but erroneously recorded in the SA BDM under the surname of Bennett. Richard senior was killed on 25 Dec 1872 in a rock fall at the Wallaroo Mines.

Richard and Elizabeth and their family lived at Wallaroo Mines (Kadina) before moving the new mining town of Broken Hill NSW during 1887 after Sampson's death.

Would like to hear from anyone who may be researching this branch of the Bennetts family or who may have come across records of this family during their research.

Regards, John
Hello,
The more research i do on the Cornish Bennetts the more i find them becoming intermarried through various families and wouldn't be surprised if we are connected, eventually.
Originally they were followers of St Benedict in Savigny in France, where they built an Abbey.I know some came from Italy, the Romans were incredible building engineers, and were used there. When Savigny Abbey was completed,,William of Normandy brought that particular group,of Benedictine Monks who wore grey habits, andbuilders,(amongst them Frenchmen)to England,
To cut a long story short,James the first of England, sixth of Scotland, nephew to Elizabeth the first, split up the brotherhood, there were too many conflicts etc., between protestants and Catholics on the Scottish borders, some recieved monetry encouragement,to move,to Ireland,Scotland,Cornwall,
To keep their identity, and unity in origins, preserved, the name Bennett appears to have been taken by them all, which means,"Of St Benedict" and today there is that sense of belonging whenever you meet a fellow Bennett.....you then discover they intermarried into certain Cornish families, and today i am amazed how a lot of Cornish folk, still seem to be doing that, sticking together, through think and thin,
Nice isn't it?

Valerie

The family motto; To serve God AND the King, came into being ,
The name Bennetts came into existence

Strangely my maiden name is Mary Bell Bennetts and I was born in Rockhampton Queensland Australia. My father was Charles William Bennetts, His father was James and grand-father was Richard who was born in Cornwall at a town called St. Just that is near the airport at Lands-end. I believe richard was an engineer and he moved with his wife to USA. James was born on a boat on lake michigan in USA and following the death of his mother and the re-marriage of his father to a Nelly Stone he and his brother moved back to Cornwall and then immigrated to Australia settling in central Queensland. James married a Catherine Frobos (Froburs). I am a practicing christian and very evangelistic having been on a few missionary trips, the latest to NE India in 2005. I was just amazed that there had been an earlier Mary Bell Bennetts who was also an evangelist and wonder if Iwas related to her. Please feel free to reply. Cheers, Mary Bell

Bennetts - Lead Mine Cornwall/Wales

Hi
My Dad had a flashback last night of his father (James Bennetts) telling him that his grandmother had owned a mine, possibly lead, in Cornwall in the mid late 1800's. She had moved to Wales and left the mine in the hands of her son who basically gambled it away and moved to possibly the USA.

My grandfather was James Bennetts born in 1885 in Swansea, his father was John Bands Bennetts born Cardiganshire 1859 and his father was James Bennetts who I believe was from Cornwall. I have been given the name Towereath but can't find trace of this.

Also there is a family tale of a female preacher - Mary Bell Bennetts in the mid 1800's????

Any other Bennetts' out there who can help?

Contact me at juliabeekay@yahoo.com

Cheers!!

Walter Bennetts, your g grandfather (?) and William's brother in law, registered the death and is listed as being present at the death. Walter's address listed as 29 Jackson Street. By 1901, Martha was living next door to him at 31 Jackson Street.
Fiona

Thanks for the responses!
Valerie, I will email you with what information I have so far in case there is a link.
In 1851, John and Eliza Bennetts (nee Bray) lived at an address in Downing Street, Bodmin with 4 children Elizabeth (Bray), William, John and Caroline Bennetts. There was another Bennetts family in the same road (haven't got the information in front of me) and I wondered whether he might be a brother. Also a Bray family.
By 1861, they were living at Higher Coombe, St Cleer. Elizabeth Bray was off the census but the family had expanded to include Eliza, Martha, James, George and Thomas.
Another move as by 1871, they were in Church Rowe, Camborne. The children living with them at this time were Caroline, Martha, James, George, Thomas and Walter.
In 1881, some of the family had moved to 34 Jackson Street, Brotton (North Riding of Yorkshire).
Martha had married William Thomas from St Just in 1875 and was living in Railway Terrace.
I think Thomas married married Harriet (if I am right, Thomas dropped the s and became plain Bennett) and had 11 children at least before his death in 1910 in the Lumpsey mines. Harriet lived to a ripe old age.
George and Walter were still living with their parents.

Lesley's mother is my grandmother's cousin (Martha and Walter being siblings).
Do you think there is any link between Richard Bennetts and my family Valerie?

I have tried to email you but have recived no response to date. Am concerned I have written to wrong address!!
My 95 year old grandmother (Lyla Wright born Jackson St, Brotton1910) and her 93 year old sister (Emily Wright born Mayfield Cottage, Hinderwell b 1912) are both still alive and remember the family and area well. Lyla now has alzheimers and is virtually blind but Emily still very alert.
I have family photos and family anecdotes to share.
None of my immediate family on Grandma's side still live in the area - the 3 sisters all went into service in Hastings, Sussex in their early teens - two of them married local men so now we are spread across the southern half of the country. The third sister married a Scot during the war but it was a short-lived marriage. Olive stayed in Bexhill till her death in 1983.
Lyla followed my mum to Bristol in the early 60's.
Your grandmother is my 86 yr old Mum's cousin. Mum was born in Jackson St Brotton in 1919, her young parents lived with Walter and Nancy aka Annie. Does your grandmother still live in the North East? My Mum left the area in the 1920's but remembers her family there and often visited. She remembers saying goodbye to her uncle John, Walter's eldest son as he left to go on tour to China, where he subsequently died. (He was a whistler on the stage).

I too am researching the Bennetts from Cornwall. Martha Bennetts is the sister of my gt grandfather Walter, who also moved to Mbro with his parents & brother Thomas. Their mother Eliza lived with him at the time of her death in 1901. I am lucky to have the family bible which records Caroline, Martha et al. Walter's wife Nancy Lawry also came from St Just & her family also migrated to Brotton near Mbro. Their youngest son Walter moved to S Yorks in the 1920's to work in the coal mines there.

I am also researching Bennetts in the Camborne area of Cornwall - were tin and copper miners in the mid 19th century. The names I have at the moment are (still early days) John Bennetts b 1823 married to Eliza
6 children Caroline, Martha, James, George, Thomas and Walter, all of whom worked in the mines from the age of eight. Martha, James and George all moved 450 miles away to the ironstone mining area just outside Middlesbrough, Cleveland in Yorkshire (North Riding). The area was attracting many workers from all over the country in the new industry. Martha had 6 children with William Thomas (from St Just in Cornwall) Emily (who lost a leg at 3 after going onto the railway line),James, George, Eliza (my great grandmother), Martha and Harry (who lost his right arm and leg in a mining accident when he was only 14). William died of peritonitis at the age of 36 and must have died around the time of Harry's birth.

I am also researching the Bennetts in Cornwall. My 95 year old grandmother still has fond memories of her grandmother Martha Bennetts (born approx 1855 in Bodminland, Cornwall). She worked in the tin and copper mines from the age of 8 and never learned to read and write well. She was one of 6 children (Caroline 1851, James 1857, George 1859, Thomas 1861and Walter 1864). All worked in the copper and tin mines. Her parents were John Bennetts 1823 and Eliza 1823.
Martha married William Thomas in 1857. William was from St Just (also a miner) and moved to Brotton in the North Riding of Yorkshire where he became an ironstone miner deputy. Two of Martha's brothers also worksed the same mines in Brotton (Walter and George). George married Harriet from Penryn and Walter married Annie from St Just.
