Bennie Family

My great grandfather, Robert William Bennie (aka Robert Vickers Bennie) born Glasgow 1848, the son of William and Eliza Bennie, believed to have been born 1820. No birth or census records mention R W Bennie, who left Scotland ca. 1870 and set up a business known as the District Iron and Wire Works in Hull, E. Riding, Yorks. Does any member have any details of this elusive gentleman?

Hello Lucy

A James Young who was born in 1852 married Anne Vickers who was born in 1854. I have a strong reason to believe that she was related to Robert Vickers Bennie, my great grandfather. This is based on the fact that a reference concerning Anne was found in my second cousin Harold Nicholls' papers at the time of his death some years ago. James was an ironstone miner, but was also at some time a piper in the Black Watch (I believe he served in India) They had a son, born 1890, named Robert Bennie Young. Given that both Young and Vickers are (according to my aunt Winifred) family names, it may well be that there is a connection here. I'm afraid that, since we last corresponded I have been unable to glean anything other than this perhaps paltry item of information! Have you managed to make any progress in regard to our ancestry?

Kind regards - James Bennie

I did some more researching on Scotlands People. The two most probably entries for Agnes Wardrop's parents were:- Alexander Wardrop and Bessy Peebles, married 1.12.1695, Linlithgow. Names Alexander and Elizabeth carry through. Or Issobel Thomsone maried to Alexander Wardrop at Livingston 31.12.1700 - although this is after the most likely birth date for Agnes (3.2.1697 - Livingston) I tried searches for siblings of Agnes with Parents Alexander and the only one I came up with was a Patrick Wardrop 1695 - a name not carried through. I found no Sophia or Helen. I tried Googling Kingscavil churchyard but no joy on finding gravestones. Any more thoughts??

PS: On looking at Andrew Beny Bennie and Agnes Wardrop's children's names, I think you may be correct about John and Isabel being Andrew's parents. There are six daughters born first, starting with an Isabel and then two sons, John and Alexander, then a final daughter. So John would be Andrew's father and Alexander Wardrop could be Agnes' father! No Andrew was born to this couple that I could see! Perhaps Sophia was a Wardrop name? Di

I had a good search on Scotlands People yesterday and still could not come up with the correct Andrew Bennie, but Agnes Wardrop married to an Andrew Bennie was definitely the mother of my Sophia and her siblings. I too saw the mortcloth entry, so Agnes definitely died in 1777. I viewed Sophia's marriage entry to Thomas Veitch in 1757 and this stated that Thomas was a farmer in the Parish and Sophia's father Andrew Bennie was deceased at the time of the marriage, and I have her father Andrew Bennie dying on 08 Jan 1747 in Kingscavil and all his children were baptised in Kingscavil. I have been naughty and not said where I got this information from, but I am sure it is correct. If this is the case, then perhaps Kingscavil is where we should be looking for headstones? This makes me think our particular Bennies lived in Kingscavil Hamlet. With the three of us putting our heads together, I think we will solve the mystery sooner or later. Cheers, Di

Thanks Fraser
Such a pity the mortcloth accounts didn't give age, wouldn't it make geneaology soo much easier. lol. Pity about no headstone. I went to Kirkliston churchyard when I was over in Scotland in 2009 - I have quite a few family lines that go through Kirkliston and I couldn't find any of my family names. I don't think my ancestors were rich enough to afford gravestones! However, there is a Bennie coat of arms, I'm hoping one day to be able to link the tree I have so far to a "noble" family line, but no joy to date.
Thanks Shelagh

Hi Shelagh and Diane,
The death date in 1777 is from the Mortcloth account books for Linlithgow Parish. It gives the date the mortcloth was used for the burial and how much it cost. It does not record the age of Agnes so where people have got 76 from, I don't know. If you would like a copy of the entry just email me at

ruthwatson @xtra.co.nz

and I will send you a copy. I was just at Linlithgow Churchyard a few months ago and there is no headstone for Andrew and Agnes that I could find.

Kind regards,
Fraser

Hi Di, As you say, death records might clear up the problem but the issue being that OPR death records are almost non-existant and very rarely included the age at death which makes them very poor records to try to deduce ancestry from. Ancestry family trees seem to record Agnes Wardrop dying in 1777 - it would be really interesting to know where this data was obtained. A gravestone possibly (likely?) Maybe next avenue is to query graveyard records in Linlithgow. As I mentioned earlier, Scottish naming patterns - the names Andrew, John, Isabel, Janet feature extensively, and I would love to know where the twins Helen/Sophia's names came from? That could give a greater clue. They come 3rd in birth order, so would generally be named after aunts/great aunts? Definitely more research needed. Regards Shelagh

Great work Shemike! I have just had a quick look at Sophia Bennie, daughter of Andrew Bennie, who is definitely my ancestor, on the old version of Family Search. There are a lot of Andrew Bennies' who married in the early 1600s, but the only ones I would be interested in are those that married in Linlithgow, West Lothian, where Sophia and her siblings were born/baptised. These Andrew Bennies come under Beny, Benny, Binny, etc. etc. I believe Andrew must have been a family name from way back and all the sons born since have named a child Andrew. This has made it confusing for all of us!
The next step is to validate which wife is our wife and which parents are our Andrew's parents? I believe Agnes Wardrop is my Sophia's mother! Perhaps my Andrew Bennie married twice? Mothers often died in childbirth and fathers married again! Scottish death certificates are the way to go! They usually name the parents! I leave you with these questions until next time! Di

I put a reply to Di's thread earlier, but I have done a lot of exploring. Using Scotlands People I found only 2 possible weddings. First was Androw Bone to Agnis Wardrop (27.11.1721 - Linlithgow) producing children Androw (1743), Marion (1740), Alexander (1738), John (1735), Agnes (1725), Elizabeth (1731) Helen & Sophia (1730) and Isabel 1723. All born linlithgow. I personally believe that the Andrew Bone (Beny) here is Andrew Beny, son of John Beny and Isabel Sleigh, born 1697. Making him 24 at time of marriage. Names of children follow through well with parents/grandparents (with the exception of Helen & Sophia - I have absolutely no idea where those names come from.) If Andrew (son of Andrew and Marion Dick - 1703) He would have only been 18 which is fairly unlikely.

I found no marriage record for Andrew/Marion Dick, neither could I find marriage for John or Margaret Wand. So at the moment I am leaning heavily to John Beny and Isabel Sleigh as being parents/grandparents. I would like to know where the death record of Agnes Wardrop death as July 1777 aaged 76 was obtained, giving her birth as 1701. Searching on Scotlands People I found potential Agnes Wardrops in 1708, 1710, 1720 and 1686 and 1683 - none of which really "hit the target". I think a lot of people have cut and pasted records on ancestry assuming dates/data is correct, hence confusion.

There was an Agnes Cunningham who married an Andrew Bennie in Linlithgow on 9/11/1729 whose children were Agnes (1737), John (1735) and Marion (1731) all from Bo'ness. So at this stage I'm still of the belief that Dianne's ancestors hail from John Beny/Isabel Sleigh rather than Andrew Bennie & Marion Dick. However, I am still working on research.

Hi Di, Sorry I got sidetracked and missed the point of your post. There seems to be uncertainty/confusion as to which Andrew Bennie it was that Agnes Wardrop actually married. Your records have Andrew (son of Andrew Bennie & Marion Dick - born 1703) marrying Agnes, whilst my records have Andrew, son of John Bennie & Isabel Sleigh - Born 1698 as having married her. This will take a bit more research. I will delve onto Scotlands People and see what I can come up with. I will also try to determine whether your John Bennie who married Margaret Wand is indeed the brother of my Andrew Beny who married Janet Wand. This Andrew Beny (born Edinburgh 1616) had a brother Johnne born in Edinb urgh 1620. Will get back
Regards Shelagh

Hey I am getting nowhere with the Bennie family, I am looking for information on the Bennie family involving the following individuals...
John Bennie born 1796 in Glasgow, he immigrated to South Africa in 1821 as a missionary. I also know that he studied at the University of Glasgow and was also linked to the Glasgow Missionary Society. His father was James Bennie born 1763 and his mother was Margaret Scott. James' father was William Bennie, born 1742 and his mother was Ann Anderson, any information would be much appreciated or any hints on how to get more info on them as it is difficult researching from this side of the world

Hi Fraser, many thanks for that information. It "marries" up with data I had, so is good to get confirmation. Where my problem lies is trying to trace further back. I have found "masses" of family trees including John Bennie/Isabel Sleigh but which show John's parents as John Bennie (1638)marrying Bessie Ford in 1663 with son John born 1662. I am 100% confident that this information is INCORRECT. Firstly, I can find no John Bennie born 1638, nor 1662 on Scotlands People (I know this is not conclusive) Secondly if John was born in 1662 that would only make him 19 when daughter Janet was born. I think that highly unlikely. When searching on Scotlands People, the ONLY John Bennie record I found was John Beny born to Androw Beny and Jonet Wand on 29.3.1653 at Linlithgow. John's siblings were Jonet born 21.7.1661 and Androw born 5.9.1658 (only 3 children show on SP which is very unusual) Naming patterns match (except that John/Isabel's son Andrew was the 3rd son born and the name paternal grandfather's name would usually go to the 1st born son) - again not conclusive. Delving deeper, searching on SP the only likely parents of Andrew Beny (Binnie) are Johnne Binnie and Jonet Gibsone. Date ranges fit but naming patterns don't, as JOhnne/Jonet had children Williame, Margaret, Johnne, Williame (2), Jeane and Andrew - which makes me think I have the wrong parents here, meaning no other likely matches on SP, making it almost impossible to trace back further. Quel domage!

Hi Shelagh & Diane,
I Descend from John Bennie & Isabel Sleigh as you both do. I descend through their daughter Jonet/Janet who married James Aiken in 1701 in Linlithgow. Andrew Bennie who married Agnes Wardrop is the son of this couple. Many years ago I studied the microfilms of the parish records of both Carriden and Linlithgow and wrote down all the Bennies of various spellings at this period. I then pieced together the families using the descriptions given to people in the records and also the witnesses to the events. The family of John Bennie & Isabel Sleigh are as follows:

John m Mary McGhie had 3 children and died in 1711.

Janet m James Aiken & had 8 children.

Isabel m Alexander Tarbot, had 11 children & died in 1758

Agnes (b.1685) m John Taylor & had 6 children .

James (b.1690)

Elizabeth (b.1692) m Thomas Brown & had 10 children.

Marion (b.1695) m William Hutton and had 8 children.

Andrew (b.1697) m Agnes Wardrop, had 10 children & died 1747

Enoch (b.1700)

Hope this is useful and nice to meet new cousins.
I think I've put you on the wrong track! The parents of my Sophia Bennie who married Thomas Veitch in 1757 in Linlithgow, were Andrew Bennie, born in 1703 and Agnes Wardrop. His parents were Andrew Bennie, born 1669 in Linlithgow and Marion Dick and his parents were a John Bennie and a Margaret Wand of Linlithgow. John seems to have had a brother Andrew Bennie who married a Jonet/Janet Wand, possibly a sister to Margaret Wand. Note: Bennie is spelt in many different ways, so I have decided to go with the above spelling. As you say, it is all rather sketchy when you go back that far. Hope I have been of help?
John Bennie/Isabel Sleigh are in my line also. I descend from Elizabeth Bennie - Andrew's sister. Elizabeth married Thomas Broun (Brown)in 1712 and they had 10 children, all born in Carriden, West Lothian. I have traced back the Bennies so far to Johnne Binnie & Jonet Gibsone, married at Canongate, Edinburgh in 1613 but have had no success tracing beyond this. Any input here would be great.

I have an Andrew Bennie, son of John Bennie and Isabel Sleigh, who married an Agnes Wardrop around 1722 and had ten children born in Wester Kinscavel outside Linlithgow. Perhaps he married twice? I am descended from his daughter Sophia Bennie, twin daughter, born in 1730. They can all be found on Family Search. Diane

My records show an Andrew Bennie born to John Bennie and Isabel Sleigh. Andrew was born in 1698 and died in 1747, Carriden, West Lothian.
Hi Lucy

Thanks for your interesting message. Our branch of the Bennie family descends from James Young Bennie, who died in 1928, aged only 52. He had two sons, my father, James, and his brother Fred, and two daughters, Winifred (Win)and Hilda. My brother, Bruce, died in 2004. Fred had three daughters, Barbara, who lives near Oswestry, Susan, who lives near Braunton in North Devon, and Rosemary, who lives in Church Brough, just off the A66. I am in close touch with Susan and her husband Peter (Kingdon), and also with Rosemary, but just exchange Christmas greetings with Barbara. My wife, Marie-Louise, and I have a large family - four surviving children (my eldest daughter, Sabine, died in 1983, aged only 28)- viz. David, Robert, Jane and Kate. We have 9 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Living near us in Melbourne we have James, who is a financial consultant, Rebecca, still at Melbourne Uni. and hoping. to take her Masters next year, and Jessica, who is at Swinburne University. Quite a tribe, you will agree! Also in Australia, there are a number of Haysom descendents - Lizzie Bennie (Fredk. William's sister), married a Charles Haysom, and they had a large family. I have a few irons in the fire, and will keep in touch if I receive any interesting leads. Incidentally, the aforementioned Rosemary is the leading genealogical researcher in our immediate family, although I might add that she has not yet achieved any breakthroughs, as we have a stumbling block with the absence of sound information re Robert Vickers Bennie's birth in Glasgow (1848). Yours sincerely - Jim Bennie

Hello - your granddad Fred and Auntie Julie were respectively my great aunt and uncle, ie Fred was my great grandfather Robert Vickers Bennie's son. Fred took over the family fencing business when my grandfather James Young Bennie died in 1928. I did not meet your father Ronald, (I believe he lived in Brasted nr Sevenoaks, but knew his brothers Fred (Jack) and Brian (Jumbo) quite well. As you know, Jack passed away earlier this year; I wrote to Diana at the time - we usually got together when we visited England. We met Brian in 1954/55 when he was with the Standard Bank in Nairobi, but shortly afterwards he transferred to Uganda, and now lives in retirement at Nyali Beach near Mombasa. What we need to find out is some details concerning Robert Bennie's birth and some details about his parents. I have a great deal of information about Robert's family - they are of course widely scattered; apart from me there are two others in Australia, and one (David) in Vancouver, Washington State (USA). Over the years I have endeavoured to search for information from the GRO in Scotland, but Robert Bennie (born 1848) is not listed in either the 1851 or 1861 census returns, and only appears in census records after his move to England. As you will know, registration of births in Scotland did not become compulsory until 1855, so that information concerning births prior to that date is normally obtained from Old Parish Records (OPRs). In 1847, an event known as "The Great Disruption" occurred in Scotland when the Free Church of Scotland (Wee Frees) separated from the established Church of Scotland, and, apparently, took their parish records with them. I believe they may be obtained from the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, but not through the Internet. From document that surfaced at the time of my second cousin Harold Nicholls about 10 years ago, I believe that his great aunt (?) Anne Vickers was one of the "Wee Frees", which further suggests that other family members (including perhaps Robert's father William)may have been. The only other alternative is that there may have been some irregularity (such as a birth out of wedlock) somewhere along the line. My Aunt Win took a great interest in the family, and told me that we were related somehow to John Bennie, who established the firm of Bennie Lifts, and whos son from his second marriage (to Elizabeth Gillespie) was the inventor of the George Bennie Railcar (see the interesting Wikipaedia entry). This theory is backed up be David Bennie (in Vancouver), although he has not firm evidence. And that's about the sum total of my knowledge. I have, in the past, secured the services of professional genealogists to dig a little further, but without success, although I'm sure that somewhere or other the required information lies buried - just waiting to be unearthed! If you do get lucky with your researches, please let me know!

Yours sincerely - Jim Bennie (jwbennie1@optusnet.com.au)

My great-grandfather was Robert William Bennie, son of William and Eliza Bennie, believed to have lived in Jordanhill. Robert William Bennie, also known as Robert Vickers Bennie, was born in 1848. He had a half-brother named Archibald Young, a frame-maker. He left Scotland and set up a business in Hull, E. Riding, called "The District Iron and Wire Works". This Company was involved in the manufacture of agricultural equipment and farm buildings. Following the collapse of this business in the 1890s, Robert Bennie settled in Lewisham, SW London, where he ran a fencing and wrought iron business until his death in 1928. I have no details of his birth, nor any details concerning his parents, whose names appear on an engraved card printed at the time of Robert's Golden Wedding anniversary in 1921. My grandfather, James Young Bennie, was born in South Dalton, Yorkshire in 1874.

Thank you for undertaking research into the Bennie family. My great grandfather Robert William (aka Robert Vickers) Bennie was born in 1848. In an engraved card published in the early 1920s, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Hannah Maria Allsop, of Kniveton, Derbyshire, it was stated that Robert's parents were William and Eliza (sic) Bennie, of Jordanhill, Glasgow. I have searched the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census returns, but there is no mention of either Willam & Eliza, nor of their son Robert or any siblings. In various documents William Bennie is described as an 'engineer' which covers a wide field. Robert set up a business in Hull E. Riding, known as "The District Iron and Wire Works". This concern folded in the 1890s, and he and his large family migrated south to Lewisham, where he re-established himself as a fencing contractor and manufacturer of wrought-iron products. In the immediate post WW2 period, this concern was acquired by Bayliss Jones & Bayliss. I'm told that he had a half-brother, Archibald Young, a frame-maker. I also believe he may have served an apprenticeship in a Clydeside shipbuilding firm. My grandfather, James Young Bennie, was born 1874 in South Dalton, Yorkshire. In later life he adopted the middle name of Vickers, and documents found following the death of a second cousin suggest a connection with the Vickers family, in the shape of an Anne Young (nee Vickers) who died in Glasgow in 1913. If you come across any mention of this (so far) elusive family, I should be very interested to know. - James Bennie, Melbourne, Victoria.

Have you been able to obtain census or OPR details regarding my great great grandfather William Bennie? Do you know his place of birth, or any details concerning his marriage to Elizabeth? I should also be interested to learn her maiden name. I have myself tried through various professional genealogists to establish some facts concerning my family, but with absolutely no tangible result. In my view, the complete absence of detailed information suggests some irregularities. Regards - Jim Bennie, Melbourne.
