This family was in the 1841 census at 17 Devonshire St Lambeth (now Courtney St.). I am looking to see where the Benny line extends back and how the Benny's relate to fellow house sharers, Elizabeth Smith and children. I think they were related by unsure how...

I can be contacted at dangoat at bigpond dot net dot au.

California Death Records show that Dale R. Benny was born 8/24/1923 in Iowa, and that his mother's maiden name was "Hammer". According to the 1930 Census, at that time he was residing in Washington Township, Lee County, Iowa, whith his father, Harold, age 30, and mother Katherine, Age 30. He also had a sister, Maxine, and a borther, Billie. His father was a farmer on a truck farm. He died 8/21/1992 in Alameda County, Ca. The census shows that both Harold, Katherine and their parents were born in Iowa.
Beatrice Benny was born 10/30/1922 in Illinois and died 4/6/1976 in Alameda County, Ca.

This is just a possibility you might want to check out. As I had indicated previously, in the 1930 census, Harold Benny, (Dales father) indicated his father was born in Iowa. I checked the 1880 census, and at that time, there was only 1 male Benny that was born in Iowa, and that was Henry Benny, who was born in 1875. Henry's father was James Benny, a shoemaker who was born in England in 1848. Henry's mother was Olympus Benny, born 1856 in Canada.
In the 1920 census, Harold and Katherine were married and living in Marshalltown, Iowa. The 1880 census for Henry Benny and his family also shows Marshalltown. So, it is quite possible that Henry is Harold.s father.

Re: Benny Relatives

I too have wondered how some of us have Benny as a surname. Not withstanding the others on the board who trace their names to Europe or Australia, I have long thought that some men coming through the port of NY in the early part of the century were given new names. My grandfather was John Benny. He was born in Fiume, Austria (the town changed hands regularly, currently called Senj, Croatia). He came into the US as a stowaway in 1907. So the question arises of getting a new name etc. to keep from deportation.

However, in 1917, men (those not naturalized from Central Europe at least) swore out Declarations of Intention disavowing any affliation with the Emperor. And that they were not anarchists or polygamists. And that they intend to become a citizen. It is in this document that you might find the original name. I found Ivan Matejevic's on file in the county records where he was living in 1917. Try looking there. It provided the ship, dates, etc.

Who this Benny person was remains a mystery.

Good luck.
K. Benny

I've seen mention that some Bennys are able to trace the name back to Eastern Europe. Is there any more info on this? My grandfather was a Benny, son or grandson of Eeatern European Jews. His name was Charles, b 20 October 1906. I have very little information at the moment, but would be interested to hear from any other Bennys with an East London/Essex connection.

Ruth Benny

You were the only message on the board when I looked! Is it possible? Anyway....I have no direct info for you, but I am looking for a Benny family in the same era from the same location.....I am looking for a Maria Benny, dau. of Major Benny. Maria died in Baltimore about 1819. Evidently her father preceded her in death. She had a sister or some other Benny relative(Sarah Matilda), that married her widower---Clement Beckwith. In other words, both these girls, Maria and Sarah Matilda, married Clement Beckwith. Clement origninally was from Milford, Delaware. He inherited his father-in-law's property in Talbot Co. Maria and Clement were also married in Talbot Co. These names might help you start a search. There are several of us who are searching for this Maria Benny and Major Benny. It turns out that Clement and Sarah Matilda went to present day Centre County PA and founded the town of Port Matilda. They started a Beckwith line that still flourishes up there. We are all stumped on the Benny line. Good Luck, Vicki

Arthur Weston Benny

I have no information on my grandfather, Arthur Weston Benny. None of the following is confirmed: he was born in Australia about 1885 - 1895. Married Patricia Mildred Gilder in Seattle, Washington, probably in 1918. Was a Purser on Merchant Marine ships on the US West Coast. My father's birth certificate says he was a Shipbuilder.
About 1922 or so, seems he left his family and moved to the Portland, Oregon area and may have had more children. About 1930, my father received word that Arthur Weston Benny was killed in some sort of accident.

I have searched many databases but have found nothing on him. It has occurred to me that he may have changed his name. I have also searched using "Weston" as a last name. There are some "Benny" records in Australia for that time period, but I have not made any connections.

Any suggestions or ideas? Please contact me by email, or telephone: 805 649-9696.

Ray Benny
