Re: Benson's from Ireland

I found out a couple years ago that my last name should be Benson. My great-grandfather was born Benson and his last name was changed to Flores. The story is my great(x2) grandfather was murdered in Texas over a gambling debt. He had 2 sons and a wife. She remarried and changed her sons last name from Benson to Flores. Since one of my aunts has red hair I was thinking he may be from the Irish Benson's. Any ideas?

William Benson in San Diego, CA @ 1848

HELP! We have hit the wall. It was listed that Wm Benson was my Gr-Gr Grandmother's (Carolina Benson) father on several documents including a marriage certificate at St Joseph's Cathedral, San Diego, CA. Her mother is listed as Ma Anta Quis (Maria Antonia)
-Carolina Benson was born approximately 1849. San Pasqual Indian Tribe.
-Supposedly there is a marriage record at San Diego Mission for the marriage of William Benson & Maria Antonia Quisquis. Have not seen this myself, YET.
-William Benson could have been in the military. He is referenced as "Capt".
-Supposedly there was a prominent Benson Family that resided in the Imperial Valley, CA.
Any help/discussion on this matter is greatly anticipated and will be greatly appreciated.
Diane Watt-Alvey

Hello
I'm doing the family tree on behalf of my son's partner - her grandfather's own great grandfather was a Benson/ Berndson/ Bendson of Swedish ancestory - who in the late 19th Cent. arrived in Cardiff. He had 2 sisters. His son was Charles Albert Benson and grandaughter Mary Georgina Benson.

If anyone has any information that could help us trace her tree we would both be very grateful.

Have just seen this old post. Interested in discussing this family with you. I am descended from Gabriel N. Benson Dr. Elias' brother. My family is buried along with the Dr. and his family in the Benson cemetery on Dr. Elias' land west of Marion, AL. Do these letters exist and have you further knowledge of their whereabouts? All of the Benson family interests us and we make trips to Perry County with some frequency. respond to nancybensontate@suddenlinkmail.com if you like.

Have you researched the book "Come to My Sunland" 1882-1886 by Julia Daniels Moseley? Her letters mention my Legate family who lived there from 1882 - 1908. The letters mention a lot of local people and I see that one of the 1918 Benson pallbearers was named Moseley.

Have seen the Cemetery, & would love to be able to find out who else is there.
Norman is a 3rd Cousin, & his brother sent me a copy of the book. The book doesn't tell where she is buried either.

I don't know if this helps anyone or not but there is an
abandoned cemetery about 3 miles from the Carvers Creek
Methodist Church that only has two stone markers. One
reads "Francis Benson Sept 12,1818 to Feb 27,1882". The
other reads "Levi S. Benson Co.B - NC Arty - CSA"

There are three graves marked with wooden markers and
several sunken areas that are likely graves.

There is a book entitled, "Some Benson Kinsmen with Memories",
by Norman Benson, copyright 1982 that may be useful. Copies
are available at the Elizabethtown, Whiteville, and
wilmington libraries.

Lula Benson passed away in 1910. Tiny remarried
Carter Alice Cowell in 1911. He was 55yrs old and she was 35. Together, Tiney and
Carter had 4 children:

* Gladys Benson: b. Oct 1, 1912 d. Oct1, 1912
* Lillian Benson B.Sep 18, 1913 d. 1915
* Winnefred Cullen Benson b. No 13, 1914
* Jay Stanley Benson B. Mar 20, 1916

Tiney's children from his first marrage were very upset he had remarried so soon. When he died of diabetes at the age of 66, he was buried beside his 1st wife Lula.

Carter Alice died a few years later at the age of 45 leaving Cullen and Jay orphans. My grandfather Jay told me the first memories he had were of he and his brothere in a wooden wagon pulled by mules, taking a wooden box that carried his mother's body to the grave yard. Cullen was taken in by an aunt but she could only afford to take one of the boys. Jay was sent to live in an orphanage. Jay search well into his 60's searching for his half brothers and sisters knowing only that possibly some had settled in Ok. In a hardware store in Paris, TX , a man from OK came in the store. Jay ask, as he did and had every stranger his whole life, "What is your name; where are you from; and do you know any Benson's?" The man said yes. It took another 12 years before he met all his half sibilings. One of the sisters had a picture of Jay's father Tiney. The resemblence was unbelievable. She told him "I knew you were my brother the minute I saw you".
