Re: Capt. William Benthall of Virginia

My Great Great Great Grandfather was William Benthall Brooks and he married Amelia Wright and had 5 children. He was in the navy, first graduating class of the US naval academy at Annapolis founded in 1845.
William Benthall Brooks' grandfather was named William Benthall and my records show he had a home in Portsmouth Virginia that he left to daughter Mary Elizabeth Benthall, William Benthall Brooks' mother. Lot #42 on London Square. He did have 3 wives. The third wife inherited all his money and left it to her children by her first husband.
I have all kinds of things from him that have been passed down in my family and an extensive family history written up by my grandmother. I wonder if I can help with any connections?

Mary Benthall was born in KY on 9 Oct 1811. She died in Liberty, Amite County, MS, on 11 May 1882. The only information I have about her KY family comes from a letter written to me by my grandfather, John Lamar Walker (1884-1966): "[A]ll of your great-grandmother Walker’s family were drowned in 1811 as they came down the Mississippi River opposite New Madrid, MO. There was an earthquake and she was the only survivor of her family. They rafted logs to New Orleans, sold the logs there and returned by stage coach." The story I heard is that she was not in her parent's boat, but in another one.

I am very interested in what you have about John Walker and Rockbridge Co. VA.

She is beginning to give me a migraine--so I don't work on that name very often.

However, I do have a birthdate for John Walker. 10 Jul 1802. I have re-found a scribbled piece of paper that tells myself to try Rockingham County, Virginia, from notes when talking with my grandmother (1906-2001).

If anyone can help, thanks in advance!
Re: Thomas Benthall, Born 1805

I'm interested in a William A. Benthall who married an Elizabeth Lilley in Wilkinson County MS and then moved to Caldwell Parish La.

What I have right now is that William is lited in the probate record of a Miles Lilley in Wilkinson County as a heir with concerns about the sell of the Miles Lilley property in Wilkinson County, MS.

He also purchased on yoke of Oxen during the shariff sale of the Miles lilley estate.

He then is shown in the the 1840 Caldwell parish census next to the other people associated with the Miles Lilley probate.
- Joseph A. Lilley ( the administrator of the Miles Lilley Probate)
-Miles E. Lilley ( who along with William A. Benthall purchased the household chattle of Miles Lilley)
-Elizabeth Lilley (the Widow of Miles Lilley)
-Robert Starks (The bother in Law of Miles E. Lilley shown above)
-William Walter ( The father of Miles lilley and Robert Starks Wives.)

I also have information that William may have died of stomach influenza in 1860 in Caldwell Parish.

The Benthall and Lilley Link is a new one that I'm currently trying to firm up. I'm looking for more hints that will alow me to gather and prove that the Elizabeth Lilley he married in Ms is a daughter of Elizabeth Lilley the widow of Miles Lilley and therefore the sister to Joseph A and Miles E. Lilley.

I have not been able to find a 1850 census of the William A. and Elizabeth household. If he did die in 1860 then this link become more problematic.

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Stephen Lilley
Little Rock, AR.

I have not been able to find out where they came from or if the are related to the Benthalls who migrated from MS. My theory is that they are of English descent but only a theory. Some say Denmark and even Russia. I have some info as to the siblings of John william if you are interested. Tami

John William Benthall/Mary Emma Riggs
John was the grandson of William Alfred Benthall and Christine Lellie. His parents were John W. Benthall SR, and Amanda Lee. I am not sure that Lee was his mother's last name, it could have been Duncan. John had the following siblings> Charles D. (Charlie or C D) Ida, Addie and Ada. All children were born in Bell County Texas. Many of John W. Jr.'s family lived and around the O'Donell and Brownfield area in Texas.
John SR, later married Miranda Wilmeth producing three more children Vollie, Christine and Jeanette. Janette also married a Riggs.
I do not know where they originated from, but is was told that John Sr. ferried goods from Louisiana into Texas via a mule train. In Louisiana I found a J W Benthall and another Benthall listed as part of the Civil War troops. This batallion was part of a Texas group listed with Louisiana.

You may be right about this.
William Alfred was bn. abt 1821 according to info in Rural Shade, Bell, TX but I have found several mistakes in the info and I doubt it was TX. He married Christine Lellie bn abt 1825.
The only child we know of in this union was John William Benthall bn in 1847 in Rural Shade, TX. John married # 1 Amanda Lee and had 5 children
Charles Duncan bn 1864 md Emma Fondren
Virella bn 1871 md John W. Riggs
Ida bn 1874 md Robert Graham
John William JR bn 1872 md Mary E. Griggs
Ada or Addie bn 1876 md David Abbott
As you can see there is a big space between Charles and Virella so I wonder what happened there-7 years.
John W. SR's second wife was Miranda Wilmeth bn 1851 or 1853 as she is 17 on the 1870 census.
They had 3 children Vollie 1884-1985 never married; Christine 1887-1973 md Geo. Foreman and Jeanette 1889 to 1949 md Joseph Riggs.
I have some more info on Charles, John W. Jr, Christine, Vollie and Jeanette. I will send email if you need it. I was told that John W. JR was a supplier of goods and drove a mule train across the state in Louisiana and other areas hauling merchandise. Tami
I have just discovered a descent from John Fisher (d. 1720), of Northampton Co., Va., and his wife, Elizabeth Benthall. All I know so far is that her father was Joseph Benthall, of North-ampton Co. I know nothing more about him and do not know whether he or his parents were the settlers in Va.

There seems to be a Benthall estate in Shropshire, England, and I wonder if any one has traced the Va. Benthalls across the water.

We are told Benthall was an old family name passed down .. but no idea from which side (McCann, Leggett or?). Lola's parents were Algerine McCann and Elizabeth Leggett last of Sarepta, Bossier and Webster Counties, LA and formerly of Blakely, Stewart and Early Countys, Georgia. Algerine's dad was Martin McCann (first wife Polly?). Elizabeth's parents were Wiley Leggett and Susan? also of same in LA and GA. Any info on identifying Benthal connection appreciated. Any confirmation re: Polly as Martin's first wife also appreciated.

Capt. Benthall was the grandfather of my great-grandmother Belle Benthall Brooks. I would like to have more information on Capt. Benthall, I am new at this and have not found any info on his parents. I have a copy of the cemetery plot where he and three wives plus others are buried. I also know the location of his home in Portsmouth(still standing) and believe he was married prior to wife Francis. You may have this info by now but please let me know if you can help. Thanks!
