I just never saw the name of Louisa Gay mentioned in a document. I always want to see a document of some sort for proof. The only way I've ever seen her name is in other people's trees. A person has to be careful of that because not everyone has correct info. People see it, copy it, etc. I understand that it may be her name, but I've yet to see actual proof.

I know that is in the Houston Green family tree of Maquoketa Iowa where most of my ancestors landed. Jackson County Genealogy has an excellent site. And it was in a census or marriage record they were married 1826 New York NY.

Where did you find his immigration from England? I've only been able to trace him back to Sharpsville, Mercer Co., PA. Please let me know where you saw this so I can add the info. Do you know where there is a marriage record for his marriage to Louisa Gay? This is also something I've not been able to find.

According to the information i have William was born around 1800 in Rotherham Wales Its possible he was from a Family exiled from England to wales because of religious persecution some time during the 17th and 18th centuries. The civil war in England. He married Louisa Gay 1826 NY. She was the daughter of William Gay. she and William moved to Pa. and there were Bentley's in the PA area from about the time of the American revolution. They reportedly were the Brothers of an English immigrant. Jefferson is the son of William and Louisa Gay Bentley and my Grandfathers Grandfather Roneen wild77rose@gmail.com

I have some pics of Bertha Bentley and William, her son, and Elmer, my grandfather. I'd love to see the ones you have. The more I can collect, the happier I am. I have no pics of Joseph though. I know what you mean about the names repeating over and over. My email is dawnbentley@q.com
Please email me.
I know Uncle Bill had three sons. Henry died in a explosion at the plant he was working in. the ambulance took him past his house on the way to the hospital. who was your father henry or alvin or elmer? there has been no mention of a twin in the family background. we are back into wales as the starting place of mercer co. william. to bad they named everyone to be repeated in the family glad i am not related to the smiths (ha)
i suspect you are alvins son we could meet in clinton and compare notes. my niece yvonne henn lives in camanche and she also has been looking back. a lot of bentleys came over from england three brothers settled in the area and jefferson was born moved to maquoketa ia his tombstone has a arrow which says going up under Huldah his wifes name. he must of had a sense of humor. (had to have he had 11 children) he died of brights disease, granpa joseph died of tb granma bertha died of cancer (breast removed then lung cancer) her daughter Fonda Schnack is in the nursing home in De Witt she would love to see you. your mother and her played cards also with your granma and aunt.
i do not believe i have a picture of Joseph but i do have Bertha and her brothers

They lived in Mercer County, PA. I found it on a census record. I also believe Jefferson had a twin brother. I'll go back and look at this info and get back to you. Do you happen to have any photos of Joseph?

Edwin I posted a large note! I deleted it by accident. But No I haven't seen the 1865 census records I don't have acess at the present time I would like to check Lucy Bentley Bemus But I think by 1865 She and her children had moved to Augusta Wisc.
Arnold lived next to her 1850 and 1860 I was sent a 1865 Ellington Chautauqua Co NY for him years ago. She seems to be the only Lucy Bentley that was in the correct locations and the same years Arnold B Shaw. I would love it if I could find a mar or find out if she was mar before? Web sites state she was mar 1823 but she and Horace Nurse Bemus had no children till abt 1829? I have much on Phineas K Shaw
would love a 1865 census on him. Please contact me privately
I am working up a time line on the Shaw Wescott Lewis now Bently from the info I have gathered
Tnx for your time
Sherry

I believe the listing for Arnold Barber Shaw's father in the New York, Town Clerks' Registers.... is Phineas K. Shaw not Phurens K. Shaw.
Would he then be the Phineas K. Shaw of Alfred, Allegany Co.,NY b. 1803 in Rensselaer Co., NY and d. 1886 in Allegany?
That Phineas m. in 1829 Melissa Sweet but he could have married a Lucy Bentley previously.
I am curious to know the parents of the Lucy Bentley.
Have you seen the 1865 state census listing for Phineas K. Shaw? The 1865 census lists how many times the individuals have been married.

Children of Joseph BENTLEY and Hannah BARBER

It has come to my attention that some of the trees showing the children of Joseph BENTLEY (1757-1832) and his wife Hannah nee BARBER (1755-1840) include an Elizabeth BENTLEY (1826 Manchester-1892 Oldham). This is an incorrect link. The "Elizabeth" born in 1826 was actually called "Betty" a very popular name in the Lancashire Yorkshire area. Even her baptismal record refers to her as Betty. She was the daughter of Joseph BENTLEY (1805 Saddleworth - 1872 Kensington check the British Library for his books and pamphlets - he referred to himself as "the Oldest School Inspector") and his wife Sally or Sarah HARROP or HILTON (1797-1863 Oldham). Betty was the wife of Edward B. BEAUMONT and they had 4 children in England before sailing to America in 1849. The settled initially in Philadelphia before moving to Woodville, Mississippi where Edward worked on the West Feliciana Railroad which took cotton from the area farms to Bayou Sara where it was sent on to Mississippi. Betty and her children ran a shop and dry goods store and later a rooming house. Betty and Edward had 10 children in all, but only 3 married and had children. If you want further information, please contact me directly. Please, anyone who erroneously linked the Elizabeth/Betty BENTLEY with Joseph BENTLEY and Hannah BARBER, will you please correct that mistake so it doesn't get propagated further. Thanks, Rebecca

John Bentley of Kent

Sharon, Conn. Probate Records, Book E5 by Donna Valley Russell, Catoctin Press, 1984. Call no. 974.61 R2r.

P. 79:

JOHN BENTLEY of Kent (Litchfield, CT). Dist of land to: widow Thankful Buck, Hannah Brownson, Sarah Gillet, Elizabeth Skinner, Mercy Bentley, Mary Bentley, Jr., 22 Aug 1768. (pp 416-8).

It appears that John Bentley did not leave a wil, at least not in Litchfield co., CT; the document found on pgs. 416-8 deals only with the distribution of his land. It does not mention the date of his death, so he may not have died in 1768, although it is probable. He may have owned the land in Kent but lived elsewhere. I was not able to find a death record for him in Connecticut.

It is not clear why his widow has a different surname but it would appear that she remarried. Often a widow forfeits inheritance from her deceased husband if she chooses to remarry.

Sarah Bentley married Amos Gillet and her sister Hannah married Jabez Brownson. No other information was found on the other sisters.

This document creates more questions than it answers, so any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Kathy Hudson
Kailua, HI

It has been a long time for my quest for Arnold Barber Shaw born March 12 1824 Stephentown. I Know the names of his 2 wives 1st Judith Davis 2nd Eliza Jane Sutton and children, grandchildren. Know his locations from 1850 1855 1860 1865 1880 1892 1900 and finaly his death April 14 1907 resting place Pine Hill cemetery in Falconer Chautauqua Co NY. Now I always wondered what the connection to Zenas Bemus who was living with him in the 1860 census

1860 United States Federal Census about Arnold B Shaw
Name:Arnold B Shaw
Age in 1860:36
Birth Year:abt 1824
Birthplace:Massachusetts
Home in 1860:Ellington, Chautauqua, New York
Gender:Male
Post Office:Ellington
Value of real estate:View image
Household Members:Name
Age
Arnold B Shaw 36
Judith Shaw 36 (died apr 29 18680
Laura A Shaw 14
Jane A Shaw 13
Cynthia L Shaw 10
Zenas L Bemus 81
Eve Bemus 59

Arnold Shaw was remarried Nov 1869 can not find him on the 1870 census records nor can I find Laura A or Jane A

I do know some Bentleys were in MI and so were some of the Davis Family

Now I finally think I found his parents but which Shaw's and Bentleys do they belong too?

New York, Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865 about Arnold Barber Shaw
Name:Arnold Barber Shaw
Birth Date:12 Mar 1824
Birth Place:Steventown Mass
Father:Phurens K Shaw
Mother:Lucy Bentley
Residence Place:Ellington, New York
Enlistment Date:5 Sep 1862
Enlistment Location:Ellington, Chautauqua, New York
Regiment:9th Cavalry
Company:H
Rank:Vet Surg
Race:White
Marital Status:Married

Since this record states Steventown Mass But the Civil war papers I have say Stephentown Rensselear Co Ny which is on the Mass Border and I can find no Steventown in Mass. Who are the parents of Lucy Bentley and Phurens K Shaw. I know that Zenas Bemus children married into the Bentley family.

So I still need help
Tnx so much for your time
Sherry

The eldest, Alice Tester was born in Burstow in 1869 and the youngest, William Bentley Tester, was born in Sevenoaks Workhouse in 1871 I believe that William later lived near Coydon.
I would be interested to find out more about them.

There are almost no details on the marriage certificate. Not even the couples birthdates. But there is a book it is recorded in and I'm going to see if there is more information in it. The tough part is the license was folded for so long and then someone opened it and taped it and the tape has gone bad so it's hard to even touch it. Thanks for all your great ideas!

Oh yeah - re your very first posting - does the marriage license not include the parents of the couple? I've never seen an American marriage cert/license but have come to expect a lot of details as we include on the Australian stuff. So no DOB, POB, or even parents of the couple? Any wonder it's so difficult to track them down!

Good question. Willman is what my grandfather wrote down on his SS5 when he applied for his social security card. I assumed he was correct about his own father's name. I have also looked for William thinking maybe it was misspelled. I had not thought about Wilburn. I will look for that next. Who did you find on find a grave?

Glad I was able to provide some assistance though we still can't find J W BENTLEY. Are you absolutely positive that his middle name was Willman? It's just that having one of the boys with "Wilburn" seems too much of a coincidence.
I had also found them on the "find a grave" site which set me off in the direction of the older Lewis's.

Best of luck with your continuing search and I hope you can track down JW eventually.

I have written to a couple cousins to see if there was a family bible or anything. This is very interesting too because Eva already had my grandfather by then and it seems like the three are just missing... JW Bentley, Eva Lewis Bentley and John Oscar Bentley. Thanks for the hints, let me see where this goes. Take care.

Eva's parents seem to be Thomas J LEWIS c1845 Kentucky - 1900-1910 maybe Oklahoma (Indian Territory) & Ester GORE c1854 Illinois. These names are claimed by other researchers but not able to be confirmed by me.

I found them with their younger children (Charley, Earnest and Thomas William) in 1900 at Township 4 Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma but by 1910 Ester is widowed and is at the same location that Eva is now living with her new family (Antlers, Pushmataha). I wonder if Eva was in the vicinity of her family in 1900 but not listed for some reason.
By 1920 Charley is married with a child and living in Pushmataha, ditto Earnest who also has single brother Thomas William (transcribed as Wilbur) living with him. In fact there are several dozen people with the surname Lewis living in that town. Ester cannot be found so may have died or remarried.
Unfortunately Oklahoma doesn't seem to be counted in the 1890 census.

My understanding is that Eva was living with her mother at the time she gave birth to my grandfather John Oscar. I have been unable to identify her parents at this time. I wished I could find her in the 1900 Census, but to no avail so far. The story my father told me is that my gr-grandfather was run off before my grandfather's birth because of a another woman. I have many contacts with the Bagwell family who took my grandfather in as one of their own. I'm going to reach out to a cousin to see if he ever heard any stories of if maybe there is a family bible out there somewhere. Thanks for your response.

Eva appears to have remarried c1907 to the recently widowed James Sidney BAGWELL and by the 1910 census they are living in Oklahoma with the children of his first wife plus a few new ones. Maybe Eva returned to her parents of JW's disappearance?

Maybe if you can locate that marriage it might indicate if Eva was widowed or divorced?

It does not. But I did notice that it has on the back a listing of where the marriage is recorded in Gainsville. so i am going to contact Gainsville to see if there is more information in their book. Thanks.
In 2000 I became interested in learning more about my distant Bentley relatives. I discovered that a Thomas Bentley was my Great-G-G-G-G-G-G-G grandfather. I can be contacted by e mail at beted1947@aol.com

Ed Cooper

Does the marriage license show John's date and place of birth or his parents names? This might help to narrow it down a bit more.

Still looking for Gr-Grandfather John Willman Bentley

John Willman Bentley married Eva Cordillia Lewis on 9/25/1897 in Cooke County Texas. I have their original marriage license. By the time my grandfather John Oscar Bentley was born December 24 (records are conflicting) either 1897 or 1898 in Walnut Bend, Texas, John Willman was gone. I cannot find him anywhere after that time. My father remembers someone coming around in San Pedro California (something about an estate) sometime before the stock market crash saying that John Willman had died. My father thought in California, but there does not seem to be a record. My father was young, so the facts can be confused. I'm at a lost of where to look next. Any suggestions?
