Re: James F. Benton

Hey John. My Name is Charles Peter Benton and James F was my Great grandfather. Chris second cousin. My Father was Harold Newton Benton. I've been pulling my hair out for a couple of years trying to Find James F's Parents . So far no luck. My brother Bob started a DNA project and we have found a couple of 100 % matches through 67 markers, but so far no responses.
My ?Great Grandmother was Caroline Elizabeth Bowen James' second wife. His first wife was Caroline Elizabeth Bunton. Believe it or not there was a James Benton with a wife Caroline Elizabeth Bowen that immigrated from England, and I am related through the Bowen side of the family. Seems the Bentons' and the Bowens have an inter twining tree. My Email is Peterb37@gmail.com. Drop me a line and we can compare notes. I think that I have may have narrowed down the search a bit through the DNA study. We have a 100% match to Francis Benton of NC and John Benton of the same location. I have found records on this branch going back to England and John Benton there. I'm fairly sure that this is the branch we belong to because of the names of the descendants of John show up on the DNA study. No documents or mention of James F, although several James Bentons are in this tree. None have the right dates for our James. This tree leads to Titus Benton the Frontiersman of Cherokee Fair a Bee Loony Fame. One of the stories claims the had a son James. Another story has only one offspring and that was Fereby Benton who was married to a Vaughn. James F just seems to have sprung up from the ground in 1823 LOL or 1822 or 1955 depending on which tree you'er looking at. My best evidence is 1823.

Hello Devie.....it is so nice to meet you. I remember Uncle George and Aunt Hettie (I still call that generation "Aint" Hettie, "Aint Dora", etc), very well. He always wore a black felt cowboy hat. That stands out in my memory. The last time I saw him was in California where he was living with Mom's sister, Ola Vaden.

My grandma Richy (Richardson) was a sister to Uncle George. I have lots and lots of info on the Benton and Nunn ancestors and have never run across anything that would suggest they were Indian. Anything is possible but I don't see how this could be true. I don't know how much info you have but I have the Benton families and the other families back to at least the mid 1700s. I would love to share and compare info with you nd to hear fro you. My email is emcraw@cox.net Looking forward to hearing from you. Ellen

Hi,
I saw your post and am also researching Bentons. My father is Sully Hightower, great-grandson of Sully Reeves Benton. Sully Reeves Benton's wife was Bettie Jones Nunn. My dad's mother was Vida Lee Benton, and she was married to Horace Auburn Hightower (went by Auburn). Vida Lee's father was George Will Benton (Sully's son), and George Will Benton's wife (Vida Lee's mother) was Hettie Eveleau (or Evelean, depending on your research or knowledge) McWhorter.
I have all this pretty well outlined in my tree, which I'll be happy to share with you (though you may have found answers to your question(s) years ago by now).
George Will Benton was Choctaw and I am trying to find those records, so if you have anything about that, I'd love to see it!
Thank you - good luck!
Devie

I bought some property in Creek County Ok. In doing title research, found that some of the property was originally deeded to a Benton who was an infant of Indian blood. (Don't have the info with first name in front of me.) I tried to trace it further, but found limited information. And then got sidetracked. This is the Muskogee (Creek) Nation.

OK, to provide you with a more detailed solution to at least part of the mystery:
-----
Judson Miner Benton and Maggie McKee Ziegler's daughter, Marguarite McKee Benton married 1st: on 26 October, 1920 in Marion County, Ohio, Chester A Mac Millan (as the name appears on both of her marriage certificates as well as Chester's death certificate - see attached).
-----
Chester died on 10 March, 1928 (in Cleveland - not sure if he and Marguarite were close at the time of his death).
-----
Very shortly after Chester's death, Marguarite married 2nd on 13 December, 1928 in Marion County, Dallas Adair Dunlap.
-----
Here is where it gets fun.
-----
Dallas was the son of William Alvin Dunlap and Mary L Johnson who married 3 April, 1904 in Delaware county, Ohio.
-----
William Alvin Dunlap was the son of James Frank (sometimes Frank James, "James Frances" on death record) Dunlap and Christina Jane (sometimes Jane Christina) Philips. James and Christina married on 17 Oct, 1882 in Delaware, Ohio.
-----
James Frank/Frances was the son of William David Dunlap and Susan Evans (married 28 June, 1855 in Delaware County, Ohio).
-----
William David was married a total of 4 times. The first time to Susan Evans, who seems to have disappeared at the time of the 1880 census, though William is listed as married, rather than as widowed. William and Susan had their last child about whom I am aware, on the 29th of May, 1879. I would guess that she died sometime around the time of the 1880 census.
-----
William's 2nd marriage must have been very shortly after Susan's death. He and Susan had 9 children, all of whom were still living at home as of 1880.
-----
William's 3rd marriage was to Nancy Wooden on the 19th of August, 1900 in Delaware County, Ohio.
-----
William's 4th marriage was on 7th of January, 1919 to Loretta Larcon.
-----
Loretta had been married twice previously. Once on the 29th of August, 1905 to Wesley Larcon, and previous to that on the 5th of May, 1867 in Delaware, Ohio, to Louis/Lewis Benton!
-----
Interestingly (for me), Louis Benton was my 24th cousin, 2x removed as well as the great grandfather of my brother-in-law.
-----
In short, Marguarite Benton's grandfather, Louis Benton married Loretta Mason, who in turn married William David Dunlap, who was the great grandfather of Dallas Adair Dunlap who married Marguarite Benton.
-----
I'm certain that there was a more concise way to put this, so please excuse my stream-of-consciousness approach.
-----
Let me know if this helps, and if you have any other questions.
-----
Regards

Just as a point of clarification, although it is true that Judson Miner Benton and Maggie Ziegler's daughter, Margaret (as her name appeared in the 1930 census), also known as "Babe", married Chester A McMillan (spelled this way in the 1930 census) circa 1920, she also married Dallas A Dunlap circa 1929.

I still have not come up with anything new with respect to Merlin Benton's ancestors, though I am chasing leads that indicate that he may be somewhat related to William Benton and Roxy Bryant (Briant)who also migrated from Connecticut, via New York, to Ohio.

Merlin was my brother-in-law's 2nd-great grandfather.

I would be interested in learning if anyone has discovered anything new.

Thanks.

Sharon, Francis Benton married Martha Cotton around 1700. You can do a search on the two names and find an enormous amount of information relating to the Cotton family. The info on that line goes back to 1068 or so. I am a descendant of Francis & Martha. Fred Benton

I just found your message. I am also looking for Merlin Benton's ancestors without much luck. One correction to a subsequent reply. Marguerite Benton (daughter of Judson Miner Benton and Maggie Ziegler) actually married Chester A. McMullen. They lived in the Columbus, Ohio, area for years. Judson Miner Benton is my husband's grandfather. The info in your e-mail clarified middle names of some of the children listed for Lewis and Loretta. If I have any success, I'll be happy to pass it along.

America Benton in Missouri

I'm tracking my ggrandmother, Sarah Benton born on Jan. 25th, 1869 to her mother, America Benton, born in approximately 1850. In the 1880 Census I find them in Marion, Cole, Missouri. It shows America was born in Mo. and that her father was from Kentucky, mom from Missouri. They could have been slaves. I can't find anything before or after the 1850 census on America Benton. Many womem had America as one of there given names/ or nicknames. If you have any information on this family your help is appreciated. The other siblings in the family are Green, John, Samuel Everett and Archibald Benton. America may have married and changed the childrens last name to Noland. Thanks

Mary, I think I have additional information. This is from my geneaology chart-it will take some time to dig thru my records to find the backup information. I think that Mary Chares (Cheers) was married to Nelson Benton. I have one source listing Nelson as dying in 1870, but other information indicates that he did not return home after the Civil War. His CW record indicates he was captured on Sept. 30, 1864, and he has no other records after that. Allen Russell Benton married Mary Gore, who died in 1852. It appears that Allen then married Mary Cheers Benton, who was his second wife. I remember that there is some conflicting information in all of this, so I'll have to dig thru all my stuff to refresh my memory. My aunt Vera in California (who is 92, the daughter of Ancrum Jethro Benton) has told me that her parents told her stories about one of her ancestors who abandoned their wife and kids and was not heard of again. She thinks that this person was Nelson. Anyway, the jury is still out on this one. I have a LOT of Benton information that I'll gladly share.
