John Benwell, author of ''An Englishman's travels in America -Life and Manners in the Free and Slave States' (1853, 1857)

I am trying to find out about the above John Benwell, and whether he is one of my Benwell family of Bristol, many of whom were Quakers.

There are some John Benwells listed in the Biography and Geneaolgy Master Index, but as this seems to be American, I don't have access on my membership.

It is possible that John Benwell, who wrote 'An Englishman's Travels in America...' (first published 1853, then 1857) could be the John Benwell (b. 21 Mar 1814 London), whose family were based in the Bristol area, parents Joseph Benwell (1783-1864) and Charlotte (nee White, 1791-1866). Brother to artist/illustrator Joseph Austin Benwell(1816-1886). Grandson of John Benwell (1749-1824) Quaker schoolmaster/founder of Sidcot School and writer/diarist.

Pointers that are making me think there is a pssibility this could be the same John Benwell are:

1. Dates/ages are about right -born 1814, travelled and wrote in the 1850s (and possibly late 1840s).

2. Family background - this John Benwell was from a Quaker/Society of Friends background (also mentioned in the book). The book is anti-slavery and Quakers were the first corporate body to condemn slavery.

3. John's grandfather John Benwell (1749) was a man of strong religious beliefs, founder of a Quaker school and also a writer- 'Extracts from A Diary kept by the late John Benwell of Sidcot....' (posthumously 1825).

4. John Benwell author of 'An Englishman's Travels.....' left from the port of Bristol on ship the Cosmo for New York, and spent 4 years in the USA, probably early 1850s. My Benwell family were living in the Bristol area.

5. Our John Benwell's children were in various census records listed as living with their grandparents Joseph and Charlotte, also an aunt/uncle. This could be indicative of a man who travelled and wasn't around a lot. John's wife Harriett died in 1859. So far I have not found a death record for John.

The book is available online-
http://books.google.com/books?id=K8m4-jfVBRcC&printsec=f...

If anyone has any biographical information on John Benwell the author of 1853/57, and whether he could be the son of Joseph and Charlotte and grandson of John Benwell senior (of Bristol/ Somerset), please let me know. I may be barking up the wrong tree altogether!, but there seem to be indications he could be.

Hi Maree,

Trust you are keeping well!

Am I correct in the assumption that the line of Greenwoods descending from Elizabeth Cleverly Benwell (Burridge) and Robert Greenwood died out? The only line I have not followed is that of Jane Greenwood and Jacob Hagen. However, I lost track of Herbert after the 1871 Census - so I don't know whether he died or migrated.

Regards,
Janice

They are both buried in Forest Home Cemetery (Luce Co.) MI. William A.(says he's a son of Alexander & Marjorie) born in Gardiner, Maine married Margaret Angell in Munising in 1910. My GGrandfather was James Benwill who married Mary Margaret Cyr.James was born in New Brunswick & Mary in New Richmond. I haven't seen William A. before this & with the economic state,haven't been able to continue on just yet, but this is what I have. Interesting that your wife has a James Benwill also.
My wife's grandfather was a James Benwell born 1883 in Port Daniel Quebec to a Peter Benwell. His grandparents were James Benwell and Sarah McKeown. Their known children were Peter 1822, James, Nancy Anastasia 1826 and Henry 1827 James and Sarah were supposedly from Ireland arriving in Gaspe in the 1820's, but I'm raally wondering whether they were actually from southern England Hampshire and Berkshire.

You mentioned Alexander Benwell born 1855 and Marjory Gray 1849. The children that I have are Joseph 1880, James 1882, Annie 1884, Peter 1886, Millie 1889 and Malvina 1898. I don't have William A Benwell in our tree. What is his birth and marriage information. Did Alexander have other children? When did he emigrate from Gaspe. Looking forward hearing from you.

Hello Maree,

I have done heaps of research on the Cleverley/Horsnaill line, (some of which came from you via my cousin Janice Webb). I have checked the registers from St Margarets and St Nicholas both of Rochester and extracted related names. Also done the same for the Quaker records from Rochester. I have recorded witness names where applicable. Also have a number of related wills. Would you like to contact me off line on dasha_brandt ISP is tpg.com.au.
The HORSNAILL line is one of my main family lines, which ties into CLEVERLEY and GREENWOOD.
Hi there,

Just realised that in my previous message, I mentioned "his daughter Elizabeth Greenwood". The sentence is unclear, Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas Benwell, and I beleive she is married to Richard Greenwood, although it does not explicitly say so in the will.

Good luck with the research,
Dasha

Many thanks for this information. I was aware of Thomas Benwell (later of Dover) and Elizabeth Burridge, but not of the first record (Henry Benwell). Thomas was married first to Elizabeth Gilkes, who died in 1809 in Dover- they had several children.

Since my post in November, I have established (at least from what I have found so far and believe to be correct) via online TNA (PCC) wills, IGI and Quaker records the line:
John Benwell b. Whitley Park Farm, nr Reading (1749-1824);
his father Henry Benwell of Whitley Park, (c1714-1770);
his father Thomas Benwell of Whitley Park(c1656-1723);
his father Henry Benwell christened Rotherfield Peppard, Oxon 3 Oct 1620;
his father William Benwell christened 3 May 1581 (RP);
his father Henry Benwell (no date).

The earliest will I have a copy of is Thomas Benwell's(1723), which has provided quite a bit of family information. An earlier one still is that of a Henry Benwell of South Stoke, Oxon(d. 1658) although he is a kinsman I am not quite sure yet where he fits in. I will look at the names mentioned in the will of Thomas Benwell of Dover.

Hello,

I have just extracted some marriage details from the LDS film #812234, which relates to Quaker Marriages 1776-1795 Society of Friends, Rochester Monthly Meeting (England)

There are two records there which I think you may find of interest -

Henry BENWELL of Wallingford, Berkshire, Chemist, son of Thomas Benwell of Whitchurch, Hampshire, Surgeon & Elizabeth his wife, married Magdalen COWPER daughter of William Cowper of Rochester, Surgeon and Mary his wife, at Rochester on 8 November 1797. Witnesses were: Robert Horsnaill, Shipwright of Rochester, William Rickman, School master of Rochester & Mary Barwick.

Thomas BENWELL, Surgeon of Dover, Kent, son of Henry Benwell of Whitley Park, Berkshire, Yeoman & Hannah his wife, both decd, married Elizabeth BURRIDGE, widow of John BURRIDGE, daughter of William Cleverly of Gravesend, Ship Builder and Elizabeth his wife, at Rochester on 27 March 1811. Witnesses were: Richard Fleet of Rochester, Shopkeeper, William Rickman of Rochester, Richard Weston of Chatham, Grocer.

There were no children recorded on that film for the Henry Benwell/Magdalen Cowper marriage.

I know for a fact that there was no issue from the Thomas Benwell/Elizabeth Burridge marriage, although Elizabeth had two children by her previous marriage.

Elizabeth Benwell died at Rochester on 22 November 1826 aged 68, widow of Thomas Benwell, and was buried at Rochester on 3 December 1826.

I have the will of Thomas Benwell of Dover, surgeon, dated 27 June 1812, in which he mentions Henry Benwell of London, Druggist, John Benwell of London, Medical Practitioner, Richard Greenwood Jnr of Chelmsford, Ironmonger, and his daughter Elizabeth Greenwood of Chelmsford. Probate on the will was granted on 15 August 1812

Benwells of Whitley Park, St GIles, Reading, Berkshire

My ancestor was John Benwell b. 1749 at Whittly or Whitley Park, St Giles Reading; he was a Quaker and later went on to found Sidcot School in Somerset. His parents were Henry Benwell and Hannah (Smith), also of Reading, who were yeoman farmers amd landowners in the area. Henry Benwell died in 1770, and his wife Hannah died in 1785.

I am trying to trace Henry Benwell's parents. Many of the family were born at Whitley Park, Reading, and I have a copy of the Will of a Thomas Benwell of Whitley Park (Thomas Benwell the Elder), dated 1723. He refers to his wife Mary and a number of children, including Henry and William Benwell, who were younger sons (also Thomas Benwell the Younger). I think that possibly this Henry Benwell was 'my' Benwell, who was the father of John, but am looking for proof. So far I have not found any birth records, although this Henry would likely have been born around the early 1700s as he was around 21 at the time of the will (brother William was yet to attain the age of 'one and twenty', and there were four younger daughters Maria, Lydia, Bathsha? and Susanna). From the Will, it appears that Thomas Benwell also owned land at Rotherfield Peppard and Rotherfield Greys in Oxfordshire as well as at Whitley Park in Berkshire.

Thomas Benwell the Younger married Sarah Clinton in 1723 with Archbishop's licence. His father Thomas Benwell the Elder may have been married before he married Mary - he appears to have had an 'older' family- daughter Elizabeth Benwell married a John Larkin in 1695, Mary Benwell married a John Ffrowin?, Grace Benwell married a Daniel Loundy in 1685, Ann Benwell married a William Bennet in 1707. All are mentioned in his Will, as well as his 6 younger children.

If anyone has any information, particularly on Henry Benwell and Thomas Benwell, please let me know.
My Grandmother Marjorie Spittle (nee Rumbold) loved to visit Ecchenswell as a child which would have been at the very end of the 19th Centuary. Passed down through the family we have a sampler made by Avice Benwell. We have never known who she was but seeing her name on this website as being married to Thomas Tanner, I think we may have an answer. Can you tell me, was she also known as Mrs Long Sixpence? One of my ancesters was known to the family by that name. Seeing the link to Thomas Tanner I think she may be that missing person.

Ro Jackson

I live in Plymouth England. Have traced grandmother to Eastry in Kent. Great grandmother to Bristol. Details are:
Ernest Joseph Benwell 21.09.1907 m. Rosa May Spicer at Eastry in 1925. Ernest's mother was Alice Benwell unmarried at his birth of Clifton Bristol. She was born in 1886, Don't know if this is of interest.
Cheers Helen

Benwell-England

I have traced my Benwell name back to Henry M. Benwell who was born in England. He came to St. Clair Co. Illinois and married on Nov. 6, 1841 to Sarah Arthur. They had three children. Charlotte, John H. and George W.
Henry M. Benwell died in St. Clair Co., Illinois at age 35 (from AIS Mortality Schedule 1850) I have not traced his English
ancestry yet. Do you have any information re this family? How would I begin the English search? Any information would be appreciated.
juneben@earthlink.net
