Dear Rosemary, We have an ancestor in common - i.e. Henry Nicolas Lionel Berkeley. I'm descended through his daughter's line, i.e. Harriet Berkeley married a Lieut Thomas Penn. Their daughter Eliza Harriet married Emanuel Anthony, and they are my great, great grandparents. My grandmother compiled a family tree, and my cousin in England has scoured the records of India House to verify dates etc. My grandmother died in Chunar and is buried in the cemetery there, which I visited last year. Please get in touch with me privately at margaret.deefholts@gmail.com
Margaret Deefholts nee Margaret Penn-Anthony

I, too, am researching the family of Col. Edmund Berkeley who married Mary Nelson. Mary was the daughter of Thomas "Scotch Tom" Nelson of "Offley Hoo" located in Hanover County, VA. She carried a dowry of several thousand acres in Hanover when she married Edmund. One of their five children, Nelson Berkeley, developed and built "Airwell" that was a part of the original Nelson grant given to Edmund as a dowry. ozzie5586@aol.com

I have also in my line a Henry Nicholas Lionel Berkeley. He is my great grand father(4 generations back). I know that he had 3 children: one son and two daughters. The son died in the battle of Trafalgar, one daughter was married to a British colonel who died in Indian and the other daughter married a Prussian diplomat in London(1800)who is my great-great-great grandfather Louis Balan. My mother is born Balan. When you want further information about the Berkeley family I can do it. When you are from India perhaps you are related to the daughter of Nicholas Lionel Berkeley whose husband died in your country.I am looking forward to getting your information.
Hello Marion,

As this posting is more than 8 years old, I'm not certain if you are still monitoring messages here. I am a Berkeley, who is also searching for her roots.

According to my father, my grandfather was a Frank Berkeley, my great grandfather was Henry Berkeley and my great-great grandfather was George Berkeley. He told me that they originally came from Scotland, and Henry ended up in Grenada due to a military action. While there, he established and ran a rum distillery and had a race horse farm. My dad, James, was born in Grenville so, I assume both ventures were somewhere in that area of the island.

My dad's gone now, so I can't ask him any more questions. Do you - or anyone else - have any more information you might share with me?

Thank you!

Hi there. A lot of my male ancestors from India have "Fitzhardinge" as a middle name but I'm not aware of any surnamed Hardinges crossing my line that went out to India.
You can try doing a search on familysearch using only the surname field and India as the country. There's a marriage listing for your ancestor, Roderick Melwood Hardinge. It says he married Mary Ada Burgess on 4 June, 1890. It was registered in the Bengal Presidency. There are a lot more Hardinges and Hardings to be found in the familysearch listings. I found that my Berkeley ancestors were sometimes recorded with the misspelling "Berkely" or "Berkley" so you might not want to disqualify any Harding returns out of hand. Good luck!

My maiden name is Berkeley. Father's name is James Henry Berkeley. Grandfather's name was William Henry Berkeley b: 14 Apr 1915 in Washington, D.C. d: 23 Mar 2002. Unfortunately I can not find anything to go further back. Was told grandfather was adopted at age 2 along with an older brother of age 4 after parents died in accident. However, no one knows if Berkeley was adopted name or birth name. Anyone out there that can help me---much appreciated.

Teresa, There were Berkeleys in many parts of the US. Sir John was in NJ and then we had his brother Gov William in VA among others. Many of them were knighted. Mine are from England and were in Virginia. You will have to trace your line back. I cannot positively get mine past my gg-grandfather Benjamin Berkeley. Obviously he was not a Lord. He was a Captain in the Civil War but was never knighted. You may be able to find some more information on the internet about the Berkeleys of Stirling. Good Luck, Jan.
